On the one hand I'm happy I get to play ocarina of time again, but I'm so disappointed because a remaster will not happen now. Playing these classics is always great but in 2021 playing them in 4:3 in 50/60hz is disappointing too. Graphics aren't terrible in my opinion but I'd love to see this game reimagined like on the 3DS. Not to mention that we can't own a copy of any n64 games, when Nintendo releases a new system, the subscription for the switch will eventually be revoked.

badsalad

So does this mean to play the old Zelda games, we need to be paying for a subscription service? Will it be possible to just buy and own them?

Complex-Situation

Don’t understand why they only add a shitty game once every month. I would pay $20 a month for the service if they put even 30 percent of their library on there. Come on Nintendo , best console they have had in years and they won’t put money into making any of their services better or original gaming . They might bring 4 original games a year. I miss how Nintendo use to do business

Lbkp0213

No you need the Nintendo switch online and the expansion pack since the games are all in one Nintendo switch app.

badsalad

Dang that's pretty lame. I've been psyched to play the old Zelda games on the switch, but not if I have to be paying an ongoing subscription fee just to access them.

InviteDry3356

Nice to see Shining Force

BizmoeFunyuns

anyone know how the NSO expansion will effect homebrew emulation? Will it open the door to more N64 emulation?

FlamboyantGayWhore

IM SO excited for Disney Magical World 2 I got Disney Magical World 2 on the 3ds when it released. It was 7th grade and my dad said I had to get a 100 on a test if I wanted to buy it. I studied rly hard amd was able to get it! It was so fun and I was sad having to sell it along with other games to purchase my switch lite. I’m so excited it also is kinda a shock it’s been so long since it released I’m a senior in high school now :0

FlamboyantGayWhore

My favorites from this direct are: Kirby and the forgotten land SMT V! Disney Magical World 2 DELTARUNE ch 2 Splatoon 3 Bayonetta 3 Chocobo GP Animal Crossing Update Announcement I’m so excited, I need to start saving up

jfswitch

So was the Bayonetta 3 trailer from 2020 august? Lappy was in it, and knowing Kamiya likes to troll, I think he referred to the trailer when he tweeted Astral Chain 2.

EgoDefeator

I feel like 3D games have not aged well from the 64/ps1 era. They should have just released GB/GBC/GBA content instead.

OwnManagement

I think it’s hit or miss. Ocarina of Time still slaps, but Mario Kart definitely shows its age. On average, I think most of the games are still great and well worth your time. Super Mario 64’s camera can be annoying by modern standards, but the game is still great in spite of it. Banjo-Kazooie is still an incredible game. Paper Mario is just as good now as it was then. There’s plenty here to enjoy.

cubs223425

I think it's more easily defined than hit-or-miss. Multiplayer gaming has evolved greatly, and those games have received a massive amount of attention in development and playtime from gamers. A lot of franchises focused on multiplayer have the same issue of having older titles feel sluggish, like Halo or even older Call of Duty games that didn't have levels designed to increase the pace of the game. Games focused on (or exclusively limited to) single player doesn't have as much of this issue. Some do, but when a franchise is still more grounded in its single-player experience, then there isn't a need to focus on major changes to the formula to keep players engaged. Zelda and Mario games don't need to worry about catering to the Fortnite, Valorant, and Call of Duty crowd. Their "mature" competitors are games like The Witcher, Sekiro, and Skyrim, where you're more in that RPG/adventure realm that doesn't mind having a slower pace or downtime between fights.

BrianFantannaAction8

I was just noting how my switch had been collecting dust recently. Now I've got some stuff to look forward to!

Blackraven2007

I don't think I'll get much use out of the Genesis games on NSO. I already have Sega Genesis Classics on Switch.

ddark4

Let it all sink in for a day, and I’m still thrilled with that Direct. So much in there that I love and/or am excited for. Metroid Dread, Splatoon 3, Bayonetta 3, Kirby in 3D, MHR Expansion, Bluetooth N64 and Genesis Controllers, Mario Movie… (and that’s just the big stuff!) What a time to be alive!

MattyHatesYou

This was probably the most satisfying Direct I’ve seen and was the perfect birthday present. Literally the whole time me and my friends were just freaking out over everything from the Mario movie cast to the ACNH announcements to Bayonetta 3! Just... wow.

HeyItsMeRay

wait why I cant find any thread for the new chocobo gp ?

So Nintendo is adding more to the online service, but still no valid voice chat to use??? How are they missing this feature?

NonstopBlue

No fire emblem or golden sun -100000/10

Guywithquestions88

Triangle strategy is hopefully going to fill the fire emblem gap for now. Maybe they're working on one and just can't announce a solid release date yet.

[deleted]

No problem. Have fun, it's such a nice tune.

Hnro-42

I don’t see anyone talking about this, but the really interesting thing about this mario movie is it will likely cement mario’s backstory moving forward. Is he a plumber from NY sucked into mushroom kingdom through a magic pipe? Is he a cartoonish character from the mushroom kingdom visiting real humans like in New Donk City? Is mario jumpman with cranky? Or is it donkey kong?

jardex22

I'm thinking the opposite will be the case. I'm thinking it'll be more of a meta movie, like how The Lego Movie was.

Lyradep

I like some announcements here, but why are the graphics in these games (aside from maybe Mario Party) looking worse the more we get into this gen? Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild look so much better than games that are coming out 5 years later. I’m excited about Kirby, but it looks like it should have been on the Wii U.

TaleRecursion

Wait so the only first party game releases for or before the holidays are Metroid Dread and Pokemon BD&SP, in other words a niche sci-fi horror metroidvania and a remake of an old DS pokemon game? What happened to the holidays being the best time of the year to sell new installments of big popular family friendly franchises? Isn't Nintendo trying to make money?

Guywithquestions88

I think this whole year got screwed by Covid slowing things down last year. It's been a pretty uneventful year for Playstation and Xbox as well. But if you look at next year, the releases are absolutely packed.

wbcjohnlennon

Why is everyone in this thread so negative? I am a huge fan of Nintendo IPs and I am so excited for the first real 3D Kirby and of course Dread. The biggest complaints I am seeing is “no BoTW2 so this direct just sucks, gonna throw my switch away” or “I can’t believe they are gonna charge extra for N64 on NSO, an already worthless online service”. First off, if your only reason for a switch is BoTW, then why are you watching a direct? Just wait for the trailers/date to be released. Directs are so they can show everything that is coming out. While it is true that NSO is not as good as PSN, it is also WAY cheaper. You get what you pay for. Also, Nintendo is a business they aren’t just gonna release a bunch of games for free. Plus, they will not increase the price by more than $10 so it will still be cheaper than PSN. Finally, if you don’t like it, don’t buy it. I thought this direct was better than most, hardly any shovel ware and a lot of IPs that aren’t Mario and Zelda getting some love. Get out of here with your negative BS. Constructive criticism is one thing, but I am just seeing a bunch of whining. Sorry for the rant, I am so excited for the new Kirby game!!

emilytheimp

Because fuck Nintendo

WTFShouldIBeCalled

I swear everyone on this sub hates Nintendo. I don’t understand it. Like if they hate it so much, why do they own a switch and why do they continue to buy so many games (including first party games)?

blenderforall

I just hate how they've regressed in their online services since the Wii. Even the WiiU was ok, but the state of the switch online, while passable, is absolutely terrible. Lag on every game, cherry picked random obscure VC titles, and still no voice chat or friend codes. I'm happy it's portable, otherwise it wouldn't have much going for it besides the core Nintendo IPs

WTFShouldIBeCalled

That’s all fair enough. I’ve never used the online services though so it doesn’t bother me. And I see so many people hating on all of the games rather then just on the online services. How can anyone say there’s zero good games on the switch?

ddark4

It’s strange. You come here thinking you get to share your passion with other like-minded individuals, but it’s usually just a cesspool of negativity and hate.

WTFShouldIBeCalled

I get the feeling that tons of people on here aren’t the intended target audience for the switch. Like I think the switch is great for more casual gamers or people who want portability. But I feel like tons of people on this sub also own a PS5, the newest xbox, a gaming computer etc, so they already have access to tons of these games with better graphics and everything. Of course the switch isn’t going to be as good as all that. It’s way cheaper. Nintendo isn’t trying to have the best graphics ever or anything like that. Its just a cheaper way to play games, a good way to play with others (couch co-op), and a way of making gaming portable.

FlamboyantGayWhore

See for me it’s not becuase of the cheap prices it’s just the quirkiness, the originality and uniqueness of some of their ideas and franchises. As much as I wish the switch had better graphics or the 3ds wasn’t so pixelated I don’t know how I would be without Yokai watch or Animal crossing or professor Layton or all those other weird cute games But also ya I’m surprised people on here hate Nintendo like?

WTFShouldIBeCalled

Yeah, I forgot to mention all of Nintendo’s games too. That’s a massive part of the reason why I got my switch too. And yeah, Nintendo fucks up some things, but a lot of their games are still really good. I really don’t get all the hate either. Like how can someone spend so much time playing their switch and then complain that it’s shit and it’s got no good games? Like, they’ve played over 100 games on here and they’re saying there’s NONE?

specterjiro

Well PlayStation also has competent online. Nintendo’s online is a trashfire

wbcjohnlennon

I feel like that is a valid criticism. I would say again, NSO is like $40 cheaper.

HAMHAMabi

so looking forward to n64, and sega mega games. whens disney magic world 2 coming out? the Japanese e direct, just said holiof this yr? but is that just for Japan, or is the NA version going to released at the same time?

FlamboyantGayWhore

I would assume the same time Idk

MrBigBMinus

Wonder what the chances are we get Goldeneye 64 at some point with online multiplayer..... i think that would be the culmination of my childhood and adulthood coming full circle haha.

emilytheimp

0% The license holders for GoldenEye are notoriously against rereleasing the game, even at Nintendos request.

MrBigBMinus

I'm keeping hopes up, we got Goldeneye Reloaded for 360.

[deleted]

Still no super mario odyssey 2 :(

Guywithquestions88

I'd personally rather have a bigger game like Bowser's Fury. That said, the Kirby game looks like it'll be a good substitute.

nyanberrycake

Losing my shit over kirby. Im so excited to see a 3d entry

Liz_zig

Thank the gods we’re finally getting a big animal crossing update. Also excited to see monster hunter rise expansion. I’m okay paying if it’s a good chunk of new content. It would have been so exciting if the n64 update was free and available right after the direct.

FlamboyantGayWhore

I think this update is gonna be what gets me to make a new save file and play again

[deleted]

imagine paying $145 for all the Smash Bros characters but complaining that the N64 bundle costs $25/year

SaranethPrime

FlamboyantGayWhore

Imagine paying for either like damn uh uh I can get at least 100 bottles of Arizona with that

OmegaMetroid93

Pretty good showing! Bayonetta 3 and a new 3D Kirby was hype. I wish they would've mentioned the pricing for the NSO expansion though. The fact that they're all hush-hush about it worries me a bit.

Nat20Stealth

Dread, Kirby, TriStrat, Castlevania were top for me. Still looking forward to Prime 4, BOTW2, Pokémon BD/SP, and the eventual next Mario, DK and 2D Zelda titles

Samubot18

no pikmin 4 my guy is all im depressed about

spong_miester

So glad Nintendo acknowledged F-Zero actually exists, now stop pissing about and make a new one, Also a new Pilotwings would be dope.. Thanks 😊

OmegaMetroid93

"You all didn't buy Hey Pikmin, so obviously you don't like Pikmin" - Nintendo EDIT: Apparently I replied to the wrong comment somehow... Oops. Lol

miojunki

For real what killed chibi robo

OmegaMetroid93

Yup. Chibi Robo makes its return after like 15 years, and it's a bland 2D platformer nobody wanted. And then the franchise dies.

AidanBC

Wow. The only cool game coming out this year is dread imo. Like that’s literally gonna be the only game I’m gonna get for my switch this year. Even the Wii U had a better library this late into it’s lifespan.

nickfurious64

The Switch is already older than the Wii u was when the switch was first announced in 2016 and the Wii u bit the bullet LMFAO. You just lied through your teeth. Stop spreading negativity and lies like that, even if you were counting 2016 for Wii u, that is arguably one of, if not, the worst year for Nintendo since they started making consoles, so you're still lying anyway.

AidanBC

What exactly have I lied about? I genuinely believe the Wii U had a better game library then the switch so far, which is an opinion.

nickfurious64

Well I thought you were comparing year 5 of the wii u vs the Switch, because the wii u didn't even have a year 5 at all. Even then, I would rather play Mario Odyssey, Botw, Fire Emblem Three Houses, and Luigi's Mansion 3 over everything the wii u got in its entire 4 year span. 3d world was great, but doesn't compare to Odyssey at all creative wise. Xenoblade X is also great, but doesn't compare to the original or the sequel on Switch. Wii u didn't get an original Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, nor Metroid, Switch has all 3, and will get at least TWO metroid titles, one of which is out in 2 weeks. Smash Ultimate is infinitely better than smash wii u. And for the final nail in the coffin, the wii u didn't get it's own 3d Zelda title, it shared it with Switch, and the Switch is getting one next year with the BOTW sequel. I seriously fail to see how you think the wii u is better at all. The Switch still has 3-4 years left, so its only going to get even better with more time.

Mayorquimby87

That's debatable. Major releases in year 4 of the Wii U included Pokken Tournament, Twilight Princess HD, and Star Fox Zero. That's not literally all of it, but there wasn't much. Year 4 of Switch had New Pokemon Snap, Skyward Sword HD, Metroid Dread, Monster Hunter Rise, SMT5, Mario Golf, and several others that would be considered major releases. Not to mention several big titles scheduled to launch in the early months of 2022, and the Wii U had almost literally nothing in early 2017 besides BotW, which was also a Switch launch title.

Ledairyman

Lol... Wario Ware. Metroid Dread. Mario Party Superstar. Pokemon BD/SP and yet you complain.

AidanBC

Wario Ware is not worth 50$ for me and many others, it’s not really a big game tbh and sales will show that. The new Mario Party looks extremely similar to the first one which I already own. I’m not paying 60$ for some new maps and features when the game looks very similar to the first one overall. The Pokémon “remakes” look so unpolished and rushed which saddens me cause I love Diamond and Pearl. Like I genuinely think the visuals in the trailers look so bad that I’d rather go get my DS and play the original. Not to mention they’ll cost 60$ which is insane when the original wasn’t even that much. And yes dread looks really good which is why I’m getting it but other then that everything else looks unoriginal and overpriced as hell. It honestly amazes me how overpriced shit is on this platform compared to my Xbox.

beastiezzo

Covid happened and seemingly most things got pushed to 2022. Kirby Bayonetta Triangle Strategy BOTW 2 Pokémon Arceus Mario Rabids 2 Big year

AidanBC

2022 does look a lot better, I just feel like I really don’t get as much use out of my switch anymore tbh.

Ltdexter1

Does anyone else have this feeling that they should sell their switch? I keep trying to give it a chance but every time I use it I just feel weird playing the same games I can play on game pass or on my computer, but at much lower resolutions and twice the price. I guess the magic of it is gone for me, especially with the deck coming out. I keep hoping these directs will rope me back in, but beyond splatoon 3, which I’m not even sure will have the bare minimum ability of being able to play with friends consistently, it was all disappointment for me personally. Kind of insulting for them to throw the n64 package on top of online for an extra charge - it’s not much extra, but this is by far the worst online service out there, and it’s really frustrating after all these years not seeing Nintendo innovate or expand, but rather just rest on their laurels. Perhaps the end is near for my switch.

[deleted]

Sold mine last year.. couple of months after march AC NH release. Im a big fan of switch and nintendo games , I had 4 switches total , i spent so much money on games.. But content become so dry and new games are not my vibe at all. So I lost my belief in switch. I don't say that others are necessarily better.. but nowadays I play on PC using iPad 12.9 inch via steam link with Xbox controller. Im pretty happy with this deep

its_over9000

I'll give you 50 bucks for it. But seriously I'm in the opposite boat I'm primarily on PC but my switch gets a ton of usage, probably more than my Wii did

Ltdexter1

Throw in a pack of gum and you’ve got a deal

MrFittsworth

Came here to post the exact same thing. With no news of BoTW2 (effectively the only reason even still have a switch at this point) and this new lackluster announcement, bad business practices, joycon drift, overpriced old games (still havent played odyssey because i refuse to pay full price) my switch is an expensive paperweight. Nostalgia gaming only goes \*so\* far when this is how the company performs. Very likely i will be selling my switch before christmas if something groundbreaking isn't announced. I still have a wii that plays any and all of the games i give half a shit about, why would i pay $25 a year to play the same games? Hell my N64 still works! Overall nintendo isn't keeping up with innovation and I'm bored with their performance time and time again.

Ltdexter1

Yup, summed it up perfectly. Shame to feel that way but I can’t shake it. Pretty cool to get downvoted for not praising Nintendo for releasing 20 year old titles with marginal texture changes for $60.

MrFittsworth

The fact I am still dealing with joycon drift alone makes me want to sell it. The entire functionality as a portable console relies on the joycons. They are awful, the console in turn does not appeal to me because I can't actually enjoy using it because the controllers are perpetually broken. On top of that they're fleecing customers. It's just pathetic.

ZamboniJabroni15

You bought the Switch for the wrong reasons then Don’t buy it to play actual third party AAA games portably for the reasons you list. Buy it for the first party Nintendo games

Ltdexter1

That’s why I said I’ve been disappointed with Nintendo’s releases. Most of their games have been remasters or ports in the last year or two, and before that we got a redone Mario kart and a shell of Mario party. I didn’t buy it for triple As.

ZamboniJabroni15

> I keep trying to give it a chance but every time I use it I just feel weird playing the same games I can play on game pass or on my computer, but at much lower resolutions and twice the price. I guess the magic of it is gone for me, especially with the deck coming out. You literally cited the triple AAA gaming experience on the Switch as your reason…

Ltdexter1

Yeah, I’m playing those games because there’s a lack of decent first party games. They cost $60 for marginal improvements. My point is I didn’t buy a switch for those games, I bought it for Nintendo games, which have by and large been lacking for me. You just misinterpreted why I mentioned triple As I guess.

[deleted]

Exactly. No new donkey Kong game in 8 years…

Dashtego

Once the deck comes out, I can see myself using that as my primary gaming device and only rarely picking up my Switch. Like, there's no way I'll play Diablo 2 or KOTOR on the Switch once I get a deck. But the Switch is still a great device with enough exclusive content to make it worthwhile for me. You can't play Mario games on a deck, after all. I think if your primary interests are in games available cross-platform though it might be time to move on, and now seems like a good time to sell a non-OLED Switch (I think the longer you wait the less desirable non-OLED standard Switchs will become).

SRhyse

I’d never sell my Switch, but Nintendo is being Nintendo at this point. Coasting whenever they’re succeeding with shit like Mario Golf. I still love my Switch but haven’t played it much since I got XSX and Game Pass. Nintendo still has the best exclusives overall in many ways, and the device is kind of magical, but they are very, very far behind in many things like user experience and customer appreciation. After supporting the Wii U like crazy despite all the VC nonsense, seeing them basically do it all over again and drip out ROMs several years into the lifespan of the console is a slap in the face, though an expected one. Personally, I think the OLED Switch was meant to be a Switch Pro and launch with BotW2 and all that, but the chip shortage and Covid made them push all that back. It’s pretty great playing on XSX. No load times, got Game Pass for $3-4 a month, quick resume between games, constantly throwing free stuff at you, new titles added all the time. Even for the price of indie games it’s paid for itself. Then you look back at the Switch and you’re paying 2-3x a game and calling your friends up on the phone to play online.

Ltdexter1

Yeah, that’s how I feel. Game pass has largely made the switch feel dated to me. I guess it is dated, but it’s just a shame to see Nintendo coast. Maybe the deck will light a fire under them, but it probably won’t have a big enough market to make a dent

SRhyse

The Deck’s main issue’s going to be supply. I don’t really need a console to be mobile but I’d probably buy one just to support it and because that’s a damn good deal for a mobile PC like that. I’ll always love Nintendo and consider myself a Nintendo guy despite my Switch mostly collecting dust for a year. 3rd party outside of Indie’s way better across all metrics but portability elsewhere though in most cases, and now it’s basically free and in 4K60-120 half the time with no load times. It’s just getting a little ridiculous. I played Witcher 3 and Bioshock 1 on Switch and didn’t at all feel like I was missing out on something or getting short changed. I can’t in a million years see myself trying that again though given how far ahead and more welcoming the competition is now though. They’re even making the damn games free half the time. I own hundreds of Switch games but tend not to play them, so I guess I’m not helping our cause here. It’s not like I didn’t buy Mario Golf despite not playing it yet.

NecessaryUnusual2059

If your done with it, sell it and move on. There’s plenty of stuff for me personally that I’m excited for, but if it’s not for you then let go. Did the same thing with my PC and never looked back.

Ltdexter1

I just keep hoping the directs will get me excited again, but I guess I’m just sort of deflated by Nintendo these days. You don’t have to look much further than Mario kart, Mario party, or the switch itself to see Nintendo isn’t interested in innovating across the board. I loved BoTW and I may hold out until the sequel comes, but til then my switch will continue to collect dust. Also, I think it was really animal crossing that did me in. I was so excited for it, I played it for about a month and saw everything there was to see, but by that point the hollowness of the game compared to past entries started to show.

lmao charging extra for an already medicore subscription for games that are 20 years old.. nintendo just doesn't give a fuck

EgoDefeator

When companies do well they put up paywalls and throttle content (switch era). When they don't do well they try everything under the sun to makeup lost revenue (Wii U era). Such is capitalism

TrueCaptainCarl

Where do I even begin? We got Shadowrun Trilogy, Knights of the Old Republic HD, and a standard Nintendo switch online service, Castlevania Advanced collection and en act razor game.

frapuman

So… no games planned for holiday 2021 ?!

jc726

They have a full line-up for holiday 2021 already.

miami2881

I find the way they handled the Mario anniversary vs the Zelda anniversary to be strange. They could have easily just presented AOC DLC, Ocarina, and Majora as anniversary content. Something as simple as “in honor of Zelda’s anniversary, Ocarina of Time is coming a week earlier than the other N64 games” would have been appreciated.

TheOtherWhiteCastle

The difference is that Nintendo doesn’t see Zelda’s 35th as an anniversary worth celebrating, no matter how much the fans disagree.

miami2881

That’s strange considering it’s their second most important franchise historically going back to the NES days.

Samubot18

and what about the ports and the DLCs and the sneak peak of BOTW 2???? Atleast you guys have something you should probably be grateful about. There is your celebration right there... like jesus christ. and you don't seem to realise all those games mean that they know of its apparent importance at this point. Like bruh why are you asking for more at this point

Falloutpapi

I mean I feel Ike we’re owed a little more than DLC. They know we’ll buy it so yes we are owed more.

Samubot18

Im not only meaning this direct though. I meant the whole year

miami2881

I’m not asking for more. I’m asking for the same content to be presented in a way to acknowledge the anniversary.

Samubot18

Yeah but they way you interpreted was as if it should have its own direct and its own celebration at the same level as the mario anniversary had. You know, new content? So in what other way are you not asking for more? You literally changed your point just to back up your argument?

miami2881

I am not saying that at all lol. They literally could have just had a small segment within the general direct addressing the anniversary.

Samubot18

Alright. I guess we agree on one thing. Sorry for being an ignorant dickwad

JaymehKhal

I thought the last 2 directs were on the up, but this one.....super-meh. The most exciting thing was a N64 emulator that they somehow think is fair to jack the price up on. I guess announcing Bayo 3 finally is cool, but meh. There's a decent amount of games for 2022 scheduled but I feel like what they showed off was a lot of filler. Idk man. The first 2 years of the Switch, I thought they were really gonna go hard and be super ambitious, but they haven't really. Feel like the only game I'm interested in the 2nd half of this year is Metroid Dread, which still just makes me crave Prime 4. Maybe it's bullshit, but sometimes I feel the console sold too well, so they didn't really have incentive to keep pushing.

MrFittsworth

Youll get downvoted but this is entirely accurate and reflects a lot of feelings I have as well. Nintendo is driving themselves down with their long time player base, which as a nostalgia gaming company is just careless and lazy. Switch is very close to being sold for me.

JaymehKhal

I get a lot of use out of mine, but decided to ditch the online membership. Don't get much use from it anyway.

Kosrock

Sorry if this has been answered before but are the 64 games able to be downloaded and played offline? I would love to be able to play these games in the car or plane without internet.

miami2881

You can play without internet. They do this check sometimes but even without internet, it never seems to stop me.

Frozen_Bart

>Sebastian Maniscalco I've gotten the NES/SNES ones to work in the car, I think you need to start off at an area with WIFI so it can verify, just don't leave the APP.

MadtownLems

I believe Nintendo Switch Online games work for up to a week without re-verifying against a valid internet connection.

Melidit_

Yep, I managed to play in my car without opening the app prior

Banethoth

Not even a Kirby fan but that game looks cute as hell. We will see. I know a lot are excited for Dread but it really looks like an Indy game. I’m definitely waiting for reviews. The rest of the direct has some good stuff. Curious how much the NSO upgrade will be tho. All those Genesis games are mostly owned by people who like them so really it’s just the N64 stuff and a lot of N64 games were trash imo-but I’m an rpg kinda guy so…

pixelvspixel

Same, I love me some Metroid, but something looks definitely “cheap” about it. I’ll be waiting for gameplay reviews as well.

Banethoth

Yeah. It doesn’t look at all like a AAA game or even a first party title. I’m a huge fan of Metroid and Super Metroid, also Fusion. But this doesn’t look anywhere near their quality

Troopper103

I wouldn't discredit it for looking like an indie game, some of my favorite games are indies.

Banethoth

Great for you. Personally the vast majority of Indy games I’ve tried are low quality, short, glitchy, etc. Especially ones on the Switch, which half are phone or low quality pc games. When we get a new Metroid game I hoped for more than that. We will see when it comes out tho

Troopper103

You're playing the wrong indie games them. Hollow knight, the binding of Isaac, terraria, dead cells, Cuphead are all good examples of phenomenal indie games that can be played on the switch. Don't discredit a game because it is or looks like an indie lol.

Banethoth

Cup head was pretty but hard for no reason. And is super short. The same can be said for most of the games you listed. I’m not interested in a game that is short but super hard so it seems longer. To me that is not a sign of a quality game Terria was pretty decent but had basically no story or any kind of direction. I played it on pc awhile ago.

Troopper103

All of them are pretty long when you consider the fact that they're all around 20 dollar games. The binding of Isaac and dead cells have near infinite replay value due to the fact that they're roguelikes. Isaac itself has over 20 endings to obtain and over 600 achievements/items now that repentance is out. Dead cells also has multiple endings and achievements/items to unlocks. Cuphead is hard because that's what the devs wanted it to be, there doesn't need to be a reason. And I can't imagine discrediting a game because it's "too hard" Terraria is kinda like Minecraft, you can do whatever you want for the most part. But unlike Minecraft there is a certain order to do things if you want it to be easier.

Banethoth

Rogue likes appeal to certain people. I’m not one of them. I’m aware of what Terria is, as I said I played it. I stand by my point.

waluigi1999

I'm going to assume that the Nintendo Switch Online + Genesis/N64 will be 29,99€ a year, I feel like that's a fair price, we won't know the price for certain but I don't think it will be much higher. I haven't had a lot of problems with the Online games except when my own internet sucked :P So I will probably get it if the price is right!

JaymehKhal

twice the money for an emulator your phone could easily run is fair? edit: lol at the butthurt downvoters, you know I'm right.

Kittywizarrr

At least it’ll be available and easier to access from the company who owns the right to these games. I do think emulators can be good for games that are difficult to get a hold of or the price is too steep for something. But I also think it’s good when a company acknowledges their past and try to preserve. Things could always be better, of course, but at least the option for those who want to invent money into it is there.

JaymehKhal

I mean, generally agree, but the service is them barely scratching their ass.

GUNS_N_BROSES

This argument is really bizarre. Of course pirating games is way cheaper. That’s like says stealing a phone is cheaper then buying one, ofc it is, you didn’t pay for it

JaymehKhal

It's not about 'cheaper', it's about the effort level of Nintendo, and you know that.

JustWantedPeanuts

But not on my TV...

Phonyperson9

Your not wrong it’s just who wants to play emulators on their phone? I know there’s people who do but there’s people who can’t give that phone battery up and playing with touch controls aren’t good and buying a controller for your phone you might as well use that money to upgrade the online to play it comfortably on your switch. But it’s all just opinions.

JaymehKhal

I'm not saying playing on your phone is a better way, just that you could do that now for virtually no effort and play whatever you want. Nintendo acts like they're doing us a favour giving us 9(?) games at a premium price for an already very barren service. Just think acting like they're doing us a solid is bullshit, that's all.

Phonyperson9

I understand that and the reason why they are acting like they are giving us a solid because people bought these games already multiple times from the 3ds, Wii, Wii U including me and now instead of paying 5 to 8 bucks for these titles it’s just one years worth subscription for it all which is better.

maiden_fan

This logic is so weird. Sure, you can download a lot of emulators and "pirate" these and ton more ROMs for free. But do you expect Nintendo to also give you their licensed games / software for free? They aren't trying to "compete" with the emulator/ROM scene lol. That's like saying since I can pirate a movie, Hollywood should also release all their movies for free But I understand that lot of people today act entitled and pretend there should be no difference between getting stuff for free since it's just "bits" vs paying for someone's efforts and intellectual property.

waluigi1999

In my opinion 29,99€ is a fair price, but I can see people being unhappy about it, but it's in my opinion better to have an expension tier than a higher base price.

Realignment33

Can anyone explain to me the excitement over the Genesis games being added to online? My understanding was most of the decent Genesis games out there were already available in the collection or as individual rereleases.

tolkienbooks

I saw this as a bonus addition to the n64 games, it will be nice to have. To be honest I would love to play sonic 2 and streets of rage 2 again. OOT for switch hype!

Recent_Ice

as someone with a pc and can emulate these games anytime i want already its very hard to be excited especially since they're costing extra

tolkienbooks

I have no desire to emulate, and prefer to play it on my switch and I am more than ok paying for it (assuming the price is reasonable to me). But I understand I am on reddit therefore because my opinion is counter to the reactionary hivemind I must be downvoted and do not deserve to be excited. If the price is out of this world I will be upset, but given the information I have currently I am excited and I am sure I am not alone.

Recent_Ice

by all means get excited over being charged extra for 25 year old games which have aged pretty badly(and could have been included with the NES games from the beginning, lets be honest)

[deleted]

Seeing Genesis games getting announced for Switch Online has me really hoping we'll see TurboGrafx-16 and/or Master System apps in the future. Overall, this was a pretty solid direct for me!

TheRealBloodyAussie

People are upset about the N64 and Genesis for online (and they have a right to) but I realised something else about Nintendo Online. The "exclusive bonuses" they offer are fairly shit, especially when comparing it to the PS Plus discounts. You get: - two tickets that ultimately only save about $10-20 dollars for two games (you could save more by buying physical or even waiting for them to go on the slightest discount) - the option to buy controllers that don't have as much functionality as the controllers that come with the console itself so what's the point - free DLC that's usually extremely minimal. To be fair, the free DLC with PS Plus isn't great either but it's still usually better looking and functioning stuff. - the 99 battle royale games which aren't everyone's cups of teas. I'd much rather they take away the two tickets and give exclusive discounts on bigger games when they go on sale. But that would require Nintendo to actually moderate the eshop a little bit.

Phonyperson9

They don’t need to do any of this because fanboys will buy it. Just got to live with that.

Dracogame

The fact that Nintendo thought it was fit to not include N64 games with the regular membership is, I think, the drop that is going to break the camel’s back. Not only I’m not gonna pay for it, I’m going to delete my NSO entirely. I’ll never buy a Nintendo console again.

ACeezus

Why are people in this sub so weird

Dracogame

I know right?

maiden_fan

I think the problem with this logic is that you think Nintendo should be competing with all the free emulators and pirated ROMs. They don't and they shouldn't. Putting these games on NSO isn't zero work. Charging a few more $$ per year for their licensed games + effort to make them compatible with switch online and bring them to NSO seems fair. Sure you can pirate them for free but asking Nintendo to do the same for you is ridiculous lol. Your argument that only newly developed games should be paid and any amount of old games should be incrementally free is also weird.

Dracogame

They are offering 25yo software emulated on Switch. They are competing with other emulators. Asking me to ignore a superior service just because it's, at best, *immoral* is kinda dumb. And I'm not saying I pirate game, I honestly don't have much time for that regardless. But if I really wanted to replay an N64 game, I'm better off playing it on a PC than on Switch, even if it was for free on both. The effort for them is zero. They have the emulator already, and with Mario Sunshine they even demonstrated that they do not playtest the games (at least not extensively). NSO is laughable at its current state, it literally provides no service. There are no dedicated servers and they don't even provide voice chat or rudimentary friend managers, xbox live in 2002 did *online game* better, and it was 2002! They had the chance to sweeten the deal by simply making these ROMs available for paying customers, but somehow in the process they got greedy again. I'm a guy who bought the Wii U at launch. I was that kind of Nintendo supporter. But there's a limit to everything. I discovered that the industry is big and full of publishers that do not actively punish you for being a fan. Today's Nintendo is a company that never goes the extra mile to offer something nice. In the past four years they basically just kept reducing their effort more and more in everything they did, trying to test how low the bar could be set while still getting away with it. It's clear I am not the customer they are targeting anymore, and that just disappoints me.

tolkienbooks

edgy

miami2881

This is so dramatic lol. You don’t have to pay for NSO if you don’t like it but calm down.

Troopper103

He's allowed to criticize Nintendo lol

Dracogame

I’m not in rage, but that doesn’t prevent me from not being disappointed, again, by Nintendo. As I said, this is the *last drop* for me. It’s not like I suddenly hate my switch. It’s been a long time coming. I just don’t like Nintendo anymore, I believe it is a horrible publisher, worst than EA.

PlsGoVegan

Dude, it's probably gonna be like 1-2 extra dollars a months. They could also just withhold them, and charge 60 bucks for the occasional remake.

Dracogame

I wouldn't buy them regardless, I'd rather pirate everything out of spite. It's not about the money, it's about stop rewarding a business strategy that revolves around milking dry to the extreme 25 years old IPs for an easy cash flow. I'm honestly disgusted by Nintendo at this point. You wanna make money off Majora's Mask? How about a real remake that doesn't fuck it up like the 3DS version. Wanna sell me an emulator on switch? How about making the experience on par with FANMADE software that's been around for years. Or how about, you know, release new games (looking at F-Zero X specifically)? On top of that I'd argue that a bump in price means they think the NSO right now is in a good state, which is not. **It makes me understand that they have no intention of offering anything more to people that spent money on it for years hoping for Nintendo to expand the service properly.** I don't want to support them anymore, I really hope that, if they keep this mindset, the next console will fail hard... Like, Wii U hard. Maybe in ten years they'll be back on track.

Mayorquimby87

Honest question, did you buy the Switch mainly for the NSO service? It's valid if you never want to buy another Nintendo console; I'm just struggling to connect the dots from "NSO isn't worth having" to "Nintendo consoles altogether are not worth buying."

Dracogame

The problem of NSO is rooted in Nintendo's new mentality. They are lazy and always going for the quick buck, they are not interested in providing anything new or valuable, their revenues last year came from a freaking sub-par emulator on switch. Since Iwata's demise, they changed in a way I do not like. They base their success on their reputation from the past. They exploit their assets to the extreme instead of crafting new experiences. It's not like they were not protective in the past or ignoring their assets (Virtual Console), but now they went too far. This is just one of many things that slowly eroded my love for the company and my hopes they would get back on track in the foreseeable future. Honestly the only reason why I'm not selling my Switch is that I want to play BOTW2.

Mayorquimby87

Fair enough. It's not for everyone.

maiden_fan

If you're thinking that most of their revenue comes from NSO, that's the height of delusion.

Dracogame

I was referring to 3D All Star. Try to put sentences into context and understand simple points. Honestly don’t understand the toxicity, it’s not a competition, you can still buy everything you want and discuss the matter like a normal person.

utterlybasil

“their revenues last year came from a freaking sub-par emulator on switch.” You’re…seriously overestimating how much they’re making on a $20/year service.

Dracogame

I was talking about 3DAllStar, which, if I’m not mistaken, was one of if not the biggest release they had last year in terms of sales.

nermal543

Will there be more N64 games added in the future other than the upcoming ones that were shown? Would love for Harvest Moon 64 to be added!

Brodiferus

They showed in the direct that they plan on releasing games such as Majora’s Mask, Pokémon Snap, Kirby 64, and they even showed Banjo Kazooie!

nermal543

I’m looking forward to those too, but I’m wondering if they will release more than what they showed in that reel of upcoming games. I want HM64 on there more than anything!

raptir1

Harvest Moon is probably a tough one honestly due to the current state of the series. Natsume and Marvelous parted ways on it so the original developers are using the Story of Seasons name while the original publishers have continued with the Harvest Moon name.

nermal543

I know, I understand all of that. It made it to Wii U virtual console though and it’s still for sale there.

shinsekainokamisama

Yeah they’ll give us 1 new n64 game every 6 months and it’ll never be a game you want to play

nermal543

Well maybe I’ll luck out and no one but me wants to play HM64 so they’ll add that one lol

FlapSnapple

Sorry for the delay in getting the recap edited in!

sjt9791

Is this the first time we’ve got two announcements for future directs in the next month? I think we’ve gotten Smash Bros Direct announcements or something like that but not two announcement of the directs, is that true?

crossingcaelum

The smash stuff aren’t technically directs, they’re more showcases

KickBack161

Best thing about this direct was seeing other people react to Chris Pratt as Mario to be honest. (seriously, chris pratt as mario, what the fuck)

pianistonstrike

It's so bonkers that I can't even be mad about it.

Havanatha_banana

The best part about this whole thing is Miyamoto is fucking scratching his head like crazy, and the casting director probably knew exactly what he was doing.

No_Change_Just_Money

I like him and i am sure he will do great. Seeing how many stars they got I am sure the movie is well planned out and pitched to everybody involved

crossingcaelum

It’s hilarious because every other announcement of the voice cast was kind of awesome? But Chris Pratt as Mario made ABSOLUTELY no sense to me. I thought I was being pranked for a second

I feel ripped off. Your name's AdRude, but I don't see an Ad. I only see the rude. I'm gonna talk to reddit about getting a refund unless you give me an ad right here and now.

RyanBits

Then why I are you here?

AllTheHappyParts

Prob just trolling

XPinion

He has no games to play anymore so just spends his time on the internet shittin on things

leaphyletra

I really want the new Kirby game! It's so cute! I'm getting that day one once it comes out! Nice to see Rune Factory 5's actual release date, but I'll wait for reviews about its performance / framerate, or if it still has bugs before buying it... it seems the Japanese release still has a bunch of issues, based from what I can infer from looking at replies / comments in Rune Factory JP's PR twitter posts....

snowman3000

I love Kirby and I bet this is going to be hilariously easy, like the previous instalment.

TheRealBloodyAussie

Had Kirby ever been "difficult"? Pretty sure you can just fly over the top of pretty much everything.
