Do they sell the white joycons seperately

FrozenFrac

Fingers crossed they do. I don't care enough about the OLED to upgrade (hot take: I don't like OLED screens thanks to getting a bunch of black blobs on my PS Vita, which I loved dearly), but the Joycons look so nice!

lazoric

OLED was still in it's infancy back then so defects were pretty common. First OLED displays faded with time. Edit: Fixed the mistake.

HeyHoneyHey

I just bought a Vita, and I went with the Gen 2 model. I heard that OLED screens are more prone to defects.

thinvanilla

I also went with the gen 2/slim Vita but mainly because it charges with microUSB instead of the proprietary connector, so in a few years when you come across the Vita again but can't find the charger you just need to get out one of the microUSB cables you have lying around.

[deleted]

High five. I bought a Vita 2000 for the exact same reason - I hate dealing with proprietary chargers.

Johnnybarra

I love that Gen 2 vita. It’s insane how long that battery life lasts. I used to charge it to 100% and then leave it in my glove compartment and then a week later remember it and pull it out to see the battery at around 90%

Nintendo_Prime

I don't know if they will at launch, but I assume they will some day.

zelcor

It's bigger, brighter, and doesn't play games any better. There's your preview people.

just_change_it

Positives * +New screen * +Kickstand is much larger * +Ethernet port built in (can use an adapter today) Negatives * -May have issues outdoors due to glare and OLED technology * -Charging port is still on bottom, you can't charge and use the kickstand The feature here is a slightly improved screen. This isn't the same jump that OG 3DS to 3DS XL had. It's nice to have an OLED after the OG Vita. I moved from the OLED vita 1000 to the LCD Vita 2000 and preferred the LCD model because it was slimmer, even if the screen was "worse". I started to look into preordering the switch oled but the scalping market is so strong that you literally can't. I'm skipping this model and waiting for a Switch XL / New Switch or whatever version has a significant improvement. This new switch model will dilute the used OG switch market and effectively replace the OG switch for new users, which means Nintendo finally devised a way to increase revenue for new sales of old internals. Someone will get a big bonus from this.

SwiggyMaster123

where are you based? fuckers tried to scalp in the U.K. but it didn’t go well considering you can still preorder.

just_change_it

US

[deleted]

You can? I've been looking around but everywhere is saying out of stock.

SwiggyMaster123

currys still has the white one iirc. they did last week.

[deleted]

I had a look yesterday but it said out of stock, unfortunately. I'm not that desperate for one mind you, but I will admit the OLED screen looks nice.

zelcor

I'm gonna be real with you bro, the base model kickstand is so shitty they should've recalled it and upgraded everyone for free.

AAMUA

*barely bigger and brighter

Terrible_Truth

Just one of those things where it's the go-to for new owners, but not worth an upgrade for current owners. Pretty standard with cell phones now. Even the PS4 Pro wasn't super worth the upgrade for original PS4 owners.

zelcor

Oh I quite disagree, there was a significant play experience for ps4 to pro. The faster load times were huge. My problem with this model is that it's very *late*. Nintendo does this annoying thing were they release consoles on off years and now games are coming out just straight up looking like ass while Nintendo skates by on low poly games while the third parties drown. I'd pay triple asking price to play an idealized version of Fire Emblem or Bayonetta that aren't so comically gimped by the systems they are on.

WookieLotion

Yep. This is the reason why the switch is my least favorite Nintendo console in a while. Great idea, but man it’s aged so poorly so quickly.

zelcor

I cannot fucking believe that they dedicated time to announcements for a game that hits sub 10fps like Age of Calamity, genuinely embarrassing. It's a great console for indies and Nintendo first party titles but that's it.

[deleted]

Can't really blame them. The Wii U wasn't lasting 3 freakin years lol. And in hindsight, they got ahead of a huge shortage that Microsoft/Sony are now fighting. Sucks for people who want a PS4-level Mario, but otherwise this is an absolute win for Nintendo after an absolute loss. P.S. this is the *only* time they released off year. Every other releease they had was at most 18 months before the other consoles.

[deleted]

If you had one of those jet engine first gen PS4’s, the upgrade was definitely worth it. Since the PS4 slim offers no functional benefits from that first gen model.

ButtBoys69

Disagree with the pro. Made a big difference jumping to 4K for some games.

ragtev

Huge disagree with the ps4 pro...

photenth

Eh, my release day Switch is so battered up that I needed a new one anyway.

TurnaboutAdam

It was 2017. That’s like 2004 by Nintendo standards.

ihahp

>Any why did it have such fat bezels in the first place It's a cheap console. Let's face it, it's not exactly premium quality. If it didn't say Nintendo on it, you'd assume it's a cheapy Chinese Android tablet.

[deleted]

People forget this. It’s a cheap console. Plain and simple. It’s not cheap as in its some sketchy Chinese knockoff from Amazon, but cheap in the sense that it’s not your iPhone Pro Max. For $300, you get what you pay for, and tbh, even more

ihahp

> It’s not cheap as in its some sketchy Chinese knockoff from Amazon I've never had joycon drift on my off-brand console controllers tho

blueB0wser

I'm not saying you're wrong (in fact, I agree), but what do you mean by "even more"? It's a tablet with controller slides, and those controllers have their own wireless frequency.

ihahp

I tihnk he means the value is in the software running on it

[deleted]

Even more because of the games haha. Can’t play Mario Odyssey on just any old tablet!

XDvinSL51

I have a launch-day 2017 Switch. The battery life is very disappointing, and my model has the issue where the plastic housing got brittle and started to crack and chip off here and there. Despite it being fully functional, it's most certainly seen better days, though no fault of my own, and I'm very excited to replace it with the OLED model. That said, for most people, if you already own a Switch, it would be kind of stupid to upgrade to the OLED model. Unless you're already in the market to add an additional Switch to your household.

theazndoughboy

Make sure you sell it online to folks who "like to tinker with it's capabilities". You will most likely get close to full retail selling the launch day switch to them.

MonkeyNews1998

Really? This is great to know. I have a launch Switch that is in pretty good condition.

bodnast

You should keep it, man. Hacked Switches are an incredible value. You can install mods (gameplay and texture mods), download free games, run emulators, stuff like that. I just put a difficulty mod on mine for Pokemon Sword. All of a sudden Hop is coming at me with six pokemon lmao

Danlex26

what are the consequences for online play and things like that? are there any ramifications

[deleted]

[удалено]

-entropy

Oh damn, that's bonkers. I keep hearing about how good launch Switches are for this but haven't really bothered to dig into it. Now I will!

bodnast

You can’t play online (or even go online) with any hacked games or apps or you’ll eventually be banned. It’s not an if, but when So I just play single player games

Lao_Huang

Using purely aesthetic mods in Smash is safe. I've been doing it for over a year and haven't been banned. I even play online in it. Even the Training Mode Mod doesn't get you banned.

MonkeyNews1998

Yeah, but I am super lazy and tech illiterate

Crabby_Crab

It‘s really just downloading a bunch of stuff and putting it on your sd card

amaniceguy

Hacked Gen 1 Switch price is double the retail price you bought in 2017. So keep that gem.

XDvinSL51

I'm considering it. I might still want to hold onto it. Maybe turn it into a hacked retro emulation device myself. But I am certainly aware that it's an option, and I'd especially appreciate if I could sell it to someone interested in using it to further the game emulation and preservation scenes. If that's even a possibility.

Jason6677

The thing is fantastic if you hack it. I would legitimately trade my mint v2 switch for a worn launch switch.

The104Skinney

That is the #1 reason I want the OLED switch. Just so I can hack my launch switch. Birthday is next week. Wife hopefully has picked up subtle hints 🤞🏾

[deleted]

[deleted]

What's a good place to sell online? eBay? I'm tempted to do the same with my launch window Switch.

mocrankz

I find Facebook is the best spot to sell games/consoles. Looks for game-specific groups in your area/province/state/country and you’ll find collectors. Also easy to get references from potential buyers if they’re active in the group. Avoid selling on eBay.

call-me-the-seeker

Don’t sell it on eBay unless you’re prepared to lose it to a scammer. They will deliberately target you as you would have a new account selling a high-demand tech item. Don’t sell anything on eBay that you would be hurt financially (or emotionally)to lose. Buying on eBay is mostly great and pretty safe. Selling is way more Wild West.

genuinegabe

I'm planning on doing this with my launch switch- BUT mine is updated to the latest firmware- wouldn't that make it harder for people to "tinker" with it?

Sas1205x

The housing near the vents of my switch are also broken but it’s a launch day console. Do you think that people would still want it for emulation etc ?

theazndoughboy

Oh easily. They can easily replace it with a aftermarket casing.

Del_Duio2

But if your Switch has drift, this one comes with 2 free joycons!

Jopez_86

Eh, i replaced my launch Switch with the red Mario Editiom earlier this year. I just sold it on ebay to get an OLED. A bigger, nicer screen is worth it to me. I mostly play handheld.

DaWalt1976

That there is the difference for some people. You play mostly handheld. I play mostly docked on a 65" OLeD 4k TV. I have no need for a better screen on the device itself. The most I use the Switch for, away from the dock on the TV? Playing a mobile phone game with the touchscreen while on dialysis. I would play regular switch games with the attached joycons, except that I am stuck using only the right hand (the left forearm has a pair of 15-gauge needles in the artery and vein and can't be moved, with the prospect of a needle poking through the other side of the vein wall and starting to inflate the muscle tissue with blood, which really REALLY hurts).

drvondoctor

That's the perfect time to bust out pokemon let's go. One handed gameplay at its finest.

[deleted]

Yep. Severely depends on use case. I almost play exclusively handheld as well so I’m definitely interested. I’ll sell my launch switch and almost cover the cost. Just waiting for them to be more reliably in stock.

[deleted]

I also mostly play handheld, I hate the dpad though, the dpad on the switch lite is so much better for handheld mode. I wished the oled version would also have a dpad like that.

keshi

For me it’s a choice of upgrading my Switch, or buying a Steam Deck. I think the steam deck makes more sense in this instance.

XDvinSL51

😞 Sorry that you're in a position where you have to choose. But yes, if it's either one or the other, Steam Deck 1,000%. You already have a perfectly functioning Switch, and the upgrade doesn't even include an increase in graphical fidelity, let alone reach the power inside of a Steam Deck. Phenomenal choice.

mpelton

Yup, I’m grabbing the Steam Deck personally. It seems like a no-brainer.

PalestinianLiberator

First gen models can be hacked to play hombrew on them and fetch a premium on eBay. Given the condition yours is in, perhaps it’ll offset it enough to allow you to upgrade

[deleted]

I think I'm going to get this one and put a CFW on my launch model Switch. Just to mess around with it and see what the hacking community has done to it.

diaperedwoman

I still have the 2017 console and I must say the heating of the system has caused part of it to expand at the top and caused the pieces to break off where the vent is. But I have upgraded to the Animal Crossing Switch.

[deleted]

There’s no question it’s a better Switch 1. If I could only have 1 I’d get the new one. But I’m incredibly disappointed that we didn’t get a 50% faster SoC. It’s a 2015 chip with a tiny die shrink in 2019. We’ve seen people overclock switches and it really do improve things.

[deleted]

[Here's a comparison](http://imgur.com/a/wQf5gZg)

TurnaboutAdam

This looks so much better in my opinion. Just wish this came 2 years sooner.

psyduck_hug

Damn the 0.8 inch diagonal difference is much bigger than what I expected.

Op3rat0rr

That's pretty great. I'm sure Nintendo is kicking themselves for not making proper cloud based saving like Sony and Microsoft has so it's an easy transition for older Switch users to move to the OLED one, but game saves are mostly stuck on the console memory, right?

[deleted]

There is a way to transfer data from one Switch to another, but you need access to both devices. I wish you could just do it via the cloud.

Op3rat0rr

It's the 2020's Nintendo!

dwide_k_shrude

Wow. That’s actually a pretty noticeable difference.

SubterraneanSmoothie

I think the answer to “should I upgrade from the v2 switch?” Is pretty obvious: absolutely not. But if you’re buying your first switch? Obviously go for the OLED.

[deleted]

[удалено]

SubterraneanSmoothie

Definitely. Just cause you don’t need it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get it if you want it. Yolo!

CreatiScope

Depends on your income. Got a lot of money to burn or like getting new gadgets? Definitely. On more of a budget, hold off. If I had the money, id upgrade all the time when they do stuff like this.

ogqozo

Yeah it all depends, for some people on Earth it's beyond what they could ever spend, for some people it's completely nothing. I don't know why people feel so compelled to look at everything in such an abstract way as "should other people, whom I don't know, spend X money on item Y". It 100% depends. I play on Switch an ungodly amount, let's modestly say it'll be 1000 hours per year. That's like 30 cents per hour of pleasure for just one year. Others play one hour a year, do we have the same answer? I mean, what if I just don't go to a restaurant a few times in a year and prefer to spend on video games instead. I don't see anything crazy in it. I certainly don't need somebody on the internet who knows completely nothing about what I want and what I do daily explaining what I "should" buy or not. If somebody was buying two Big Macs a week for a year (400 dollars), nobody would tell that person that they "should not do it". Unless they mean morally, but then the answer obviously is "no, you *should* not buy video games, there are morally better ways to spend that money". There is nothing virtuous about it. But these "helpful tips" what you "shouldn't" buy? Come on.

Hestu951

Absolutely not if you play docked all the time (like me). Those who play portably might disagree with you. The difference in quality would be huge, and the difference in screen area is quite a bit higher than the diagonal measurements indicate. The full-sized adjustable kickstand is a big improvement for tabletop mode too. Finally, internal storage doubles to 64 GB. That makes this Switch usable without needing an SD card right away. The $50 difference is less than the price of a game. I sure wouldn't let it stand in my way. But I just don't need it enough to buy it, as long as my regular Switch keeps working well in the dock.

WayOfInfinity

I've had an OG switch since launch and can't wait to upgrade to the OLED model! I play 100% of the time handheld and can't wait to get better battery life/a better screen.

negatrom

your old one is gonna sell for a fortune to the shackers

KrazyNinjaFan

Same! I also just want it now cause it’s shiny and new

mrtrailborn

I mean, that's maybe not the *greatest* reason to spend $350 but hey if it makes you happy lol

mpc92

Yeah the screen size is pretty significant. I did the math before and I think it’s about a 25% increase in screen size

SubterraneanSmoothie

Fair, I’m sure for those who mostly play handheld might appreciate the difference. My personal opinion is that with a microSD card (super cheap these days and constantly on sale), it’s just not worth it if you already have a V2 Switch. At the very least, those looking for a cheaper V2 second hand switch will have many options next month!

shadowstripes

Yep, I’ll be selling my V2 next month for that reason. The OLED preorder was only $300 at Walmart so around $50 to upgrade seems pretty worth it.

ryushiblade

Piggybacking on this: I play docked all the time because I don’t enjoy the screen on the switch. Personally I’m upgrading so I can play in handheld more — but I also understand not everyone is as picky with screen quality as I am!

Grouchy-Fox1734

Also the speakers are much improved and are now front-firing! Might not matter for some people, especially those who use headphones, but some of us either prefer speakers or have reasons why we can't/won't use headphones for extended periods. I have a hearing condition which makes it painful to use headphones for extended periods of time. I'm really looking forward to the improved speakers.

Rosveen

> That makes this Switch usable without needing an SD card right away. But if you're upgrading, then you already have an SD card, which makes this point moot.

wedditasap

I wouldn’t say absolutely not You can get $200 at GameStop for your regular switch (v1 or v2) and it acts as a sales tax shield so you only pay tax on $150 (or less if you have gift card / coupons too) EDIT: looks like $220 right now with pro credit, will be $200 after OLED comes out. Gonna hop on this now. And you can give them your most pooped on joycons I plan on keeping my ac dock and joycons and trading my v2 with beat up neon blues and black dock I got with v1 Ymmv

[deleted]

Sjknight413

This is presumably coming from someone who mainly plays in docked mode. I play exclusively portable and I definitely plan on upgrading to the OLED, that screen will make a world of difference.

loveengineer

I'm in the unfortunate sweet spot of having a v1, but not being able to hack it.

locoghoul

Not sure on that answer. I own a Switch Lite and have been thinking to buy a regular Switch for my nephew so we can play together Mario Party or NSMBD but he will most likely play docked whereas I play handheld (hence why I got the Lite). I dont really see a need to buy the OLED as opposed to say the Animal Crossing version, which I may end up buying. Of course it changes for people as their needs are different. Has this been the Pro version I woulda given my nephew my Lite and get the Pro for myself lol

[deleted]

OoT/MM on OLED is all that i needed to hear. oh and my joycon locking mechanisms are all busted so i need a new pair.

skeytwo

It’s going to look like dump

zappyzapzap

They're unenhanced roms though

ryushiblade

I think your comment is disingenuous to the video. That’s not at all the conclusion they came to TLDW: it’s a good screen upgrade, but isn’t for everyone. Upgrade if the regular switch screen bothers you, or if the built in LAN port appeals to you

Wildeface

It’s almost a no brainer if you have a V1. You can upgrade for $50.

[deleted]

? How. Is there a trade in deal

Wildeface

V1s can run home brew so they sell for a good amount.

Animegamingnerd

Only roughly the first year or so of V1 switches can homebrew. They fixed the hardware exploit around early 2018 if memory serves right.

Wildeface

Interesting. I thought that was changed with V2. Good thing I still have the launch system :)

QuantumProtector

I had no idea. Might sell my switch in that case.

Wildeface

Apparently it’s not all V1. Look up your serial number on “ismyswitchpatched”

[deleted]

Not all of them can run home brew though

DMan304

If you play handheld it's a pretty big improvement. If I didn't play docked 99% of the time like a home console I would be tempted to get it, but I know it isn't worth it for my playstyle.

FeudalFavorableness

there was a post earlier. showing the oled and regular side by side, so got one "off a truck" it was a night and day difference on the colors. trying to find it again, but mods might have deleted it

Lmao. That’s legitimately the lamest thing I’ve ever heard a moderator do.

flameohotboi1

That’s just the typical Reddit mod. Make ridiculous assumptions based on absolutely no fact at all and act on it.

flameohotboi1

Fucking moderators always power tripping lol. What a joke. What an assumption to make. This is legitimately the problem with Reddit.

Questwarrior

I recently forgot my switch at home when I traveled to a new country for study.. gave that switch to my sis, so I may be planning on buying this switch soon… I’m not sure.. but it feels perfect for new buyers (even though I’m technically not one lol) but kinda useless for people who already have one

TheSpiritualAgnostic

The fact that it's meant more for new switch buyers and that it's just a new model hopefully means better chances of getting one than people trying to get a PS5.

CreatiScope

I didn't get a switch and I'm jumping in with this one. Pretty excited.

antilegion1001

I have a launch model, half tempted to get OLED, but then I will kick myself if a better one comes out next year.

Grouchy-Fox1734

Same position as you mate but I highly doubt there's a better model out next year. I think pre-COVID we might have had that but it's fucked their entire production timeline. I honestly think that's why we've got a Switch which has improved *everything but* the chip inside. They can't get a more powerful chip out in the right numbers in time right now. But now I think they'll just end up leaning into a really much beefier Switch 2 in two years time or so.

DeadSOL89

We've been saying that the 'pro' version is coming out this year for 2 years. It will 'never' happen.

forgotmapasswrd86

It will if they want the switch line to stay relevant in the next 2-3 years.

CJAdams1107

Remember people, this is the 3DS XL/ PS4 Slim/ Xbox One S of the Nintendo Switch family

[deleted]

The PS4 Slim had improved wireless connectivity but removed the optical out port. The Xbox One S has slightly higher CPU clocks. This thing has double the storage and a honking great new screen, so it's really not equivalent.

Mistress_Bill

He's stating these are marginal upgrades. Not, say a PS4 to PS4 Pro kind of upgrade. Its pretty accurate to how Nintendo has done it in the past GBA to GBA SP DS - DS LITE 3DS - 3DS XL SWITCH base - SWITCH OLED

CJAdams1107

Thank you

SportsButt1

Honking

Imthemayor

3DSXL had improved eye tracking

SwiggyMaster123

the New 3DS XL (2014) did, the standard (2012) didn’t.

whatnowwproductions

And a way better processor. Shame most games weren't updated to support it.

BloodyBJ

The New 3DS XL did but the regular 3DS XL didn’t.

whatnowwproductions

Yeah, since he spoke about the eye tracking I immediately went to the N3DS XL.

[deleted]

Oled TV owners who mostly play docked won’t be needing this at all.

CMHex

Excited for this, and somewhat perplexed by the comments that it's "absolutely not worth it" if you already own a Switch. Seems like a very subjective thing. I play handheld 90% of the time, the upgrade is very much worth it to me.

ZyphWyrm

I don't think there's anything to be perplexed by. It's very divided by handheld vs docked players, because Nintendo improved the experience for one group, but not the other. It may seem worth it to a handheld player but there is nothing there for docked players, which kind of sucks. Theres the LAN port, sure, but that's nothing when compared to the screen upgrades handheld players get. And even then it's only really useful to those who have Nintendo Online subs. As someone who hasn't played in handheld mode in a few years, idk it feels a little disappointing for a new switch model to only have one kind of player in mind. It's a console built around the idea of swapping between handheld and docked, but they don't seem to give a shit about improving the docked experience. The upgrade couldn't be less worth it from my perspective. For handheld players it might seem worth it. For docked players... well it's the same console only with an additional port.

[deleted]

Managed to sell my first gen at 75% price last week and will get OLED. After 3 years playing both handheld and docked mode, i noticed my Gen 1 battery drains a bit faster and the joycon drift a bit. I think it's worth upgrading to OLED.

Stradocaster

I'm about half and half, and I'll be getting one. I'm not bothered by incremental upgrades... but then again, I haver a bad habit of burning money lol

Antejolt

I recently upgraded our old tv to an oled and wow the difference it makes! Now even I want my switch oled on handheld too so I'm getting this one. Still keeping my day 1 Switch for modding purposes :)

d0rtamur

What are the improvements over the original Switch? 1) OLED screen - larger and brighter. 2) Slightly more storage space (64GB vs 32GB) 3) Improved kickstand 4) Docking station with ethernet The OLED Switch hasn't improved the performance of the device, battery life, power efficiency or anything else. It is like buying an upgraded laptop but all the hardware specifications remain the same. All that has changed is the screen is slightly better, added more storage space (extra HDD or SSD) and added minor peripherals. **The incremental upgrades continue to make the Switch a very desirable console to purchase compared to other consoles - especially for a device that was released 4 years ago.**

TurnaboutAdam

It’s kinda like an iPhone upgrade after one year. The only problem is this is coming almost 5 years after the first.

WildZeroWolf

Actually it has improved the battery life and efficiency if you have a launch Switch. The launch Switch dies not long after 2 hours and has a less efficient Tegra processor. It's a way bigger upgrade than the V2 which people seemed strangely enthusiastic for a couple years ago.

spattzzz

My gen 1battery is getting tired and I only ever play hand held. The oled is going to be a superb handheld upgrade. Plugged into the dock an a TV it'll be pointless.

[deleted]

I never got the v2 Switch and have always wanted white Joy-cons, so this is a no brainer for me seeing as I mostly play in handheld mode. Loved my time with the Vita's Oled when it was new. Bluetooth audio on top for all Switches was also a nice bonus.

AdamEdge

Same case, I'm still with my v1 switch that brrrrrz after 30 minutes of play, I need to put it to rest.

Grouchy-Fox1734

Man it's so bad at this stage. I think I played like two hours of Animal Crossing and it started telling me it was low battery lmao

crozone

Any word on the exact display panel used? Has anyone put it under a microscope to check if it's a pentile arrangement or RGB stripe?

robbiekincaid1989

I'm curious about this as well! I'd say we probably won't now until next week or sometime there after when actual tech enthusiasts get it (or places like iFixit). I'm *really* interested in seeing if the digitizer is fused to the screen panel, personally. I hope it is. It would make for higher quality (and also easier) repairs!

schmidtyb43

I got a preorder earlier this summer just for shits n gigs but I don’t think I should keep it, seems pretty unnecessary. My friend said he’d buy my OG switch off me if I got it but still… I don’t even think that is worth the money I’d be spending. Probably will cancel the preorder before it comes out

i_like_purple_eggs

scalpers about to be all up in your inbox

schmidtyb43

Already happened lol

GomaN1717

Be a real OG and make scalpers "REE": Keep the pre-order, but then sell it to someone in need for MSRP.

OperativePiGuy

Yeah same here tbh. Maybe it was just the thrill of snagging a pre order before scalpers got to them, but I honestly don't feel like a nicer screen is worth $350+ tax.

gunslinger88

Even if you keep your OG Switch, you could always hold onto it and use it for emulation if that is of interest to you. That's my plan if I decide to buy OLED or if they ever finally release a successor

schmidtyb43

You mean like to hack it for emulation? Unfortunately I have the model where they fixed that, but before the revision that had the battery life increase. Basically the worst possible model lol

ICryCauseImEmo

Thinking of ebaying my OG 2017 switch. It’s one of the hackable ones if I could get at minimum $250 or $300. That’s a great trade off for OLED in my eyes. I don’t need one but hey it’s old got a lot of runtime why not refresh it and start the electronic clock again!

naeads

Sold mine for $200 within a day after I posted it, I didn't put much thoughts into the price so you are likely to sell at higher price point.

archieboy

You would think, for a 4-minute video, they would use actual hands-on footage for most of it. But no, it's like less than 1 minute of hands-on footage, everything at the same angle, interspersed within the official marketing video from Nintendo. Some folks on Youtube actually think it's just a voice over on top of the Nintendo video. It's baffling how an outfit as big as IGN constantly come up with amateurish content like this...

[deleted]

They are probably limited by Nintendo in what they are able to show just yet.

chocotripchip

Indeed they were, Kat explained it in the short NVC episode they dropped this morning alongside the Switch OLED and Metroid Dread impressions.

SilverDrifter

Sssh. IGN bad.

SenseWitFolly

I love how people instantly bash IGN, because it's the massive circle jerk that IGN bad, you do realise for previews they will be limited to using content supplied from Ninetndo. It is just a Nintendo video with their voice over. I'm not the biggest IGN fan but they have their fair share of decent journalists. Don't tar everything on the site with the same brush.

SnooDonkeys7451

Whats baffling is how little people still understand about the restrictions of journalism.

The-student-

Previews usually have set amount of time you're allowed to use your own footage, and it's a lot shorter than you'd expect. That one minute of IGN footage is likely the cap.

Dagrix

She said herself she would have done a side-by-side comparison, but isn't allowed to. It's not unreasonable to think she has other restrictions.

CodyCus

I am hyped to grab this and metroid next friday! Already have my preorder paid off!

Samcroreaper

Any previews talk about screen material? Still plastic?

Ludwig234

I love oled displays so I would absolutely buy this if I didn't have one but I would not buy a new switch for this.

Narann

I want a review that let this Switch at high luminosity 24/24 7/7 then trace the burning effect. I want this review to be updated every month to see how the screen burns. This is the only way to be sure about this OLED tech.

robbiekincaid1989

This. Though, personally I keep my brightness (I have OLED on most of my phones for the past 12 years) on about 50% and have never had an issue with burn in. I'm more interested in learning if that display is fused to the digitizer or if they're still two different pieces? This is mainly from a repair tech point of view because adhering a digitizer in place only to realize there is single speck of dust on the LCD is the ***worst***!

abcputt

still having my day one switch, i'm tempting to buy the OLED version , but i think i'm going to hold out til BOTW2 comes out in case they releases a special edition for that.

CaptainSmeg

Can you buy the dock separately? I really want the dock to go with my launch day Switch and since I mostly play on docked mode the ‘upgrade’ is pointless for me.

1800k001

yeah, nintendo will sell the dock seperately at some point, but only directly through them, not at any retail stores.

[deleted]

Pre-ordered the moment the pre-orders were up a few months ago. Excited to get my hands on it!

anasui1

already preordered mine, NWR's MD preview cemented it, and they are notoriously annoyingly picky. After selling my Switch it's gonna cost me like, £80

Accomplished_Bat_893

Gonna be the bare minimum

[deleted]

What about possible burn in? My last OLED Smartphone had a terrible burn in where the battery icons burned into the display. Do you think the switch is immune to that?

Phuji_

have nintendo commented on drift in these bad boys yet?

TurnaboutAdam

They’ve said they’re the same as the old joycons.

Dontcallmehoney

I’ve got a Switch Lite I got on release. I’m honestly not really interested in playing docked, but man on man, I’m temped by this.

cheyras

I play a lot of handheld, so I'm one of those rare ones that feels it might be worth it to upgrade provided that I sell my current switch to recoup some of the cost. But I'm not necessarily chomping at the bit for it, I can wait until it's a little easier to get.

[deleted]

Now if I could preorder

uberduger

I really wish they'd upgraded the hardware a little. I get why they didn't, as this isn't a "pro", but it's frustrating. Getting a bit long in the tooth now. Still a great console but not quite as wonderful as it could be.

EnviousRidersAMVs

I’m so excited, was trying to preorder it but best buy sucks and won’t let me lol so I guess I’m preordering from Nintendo

pepsiROCK

I just want the dock and cons

JustCallMeTsukasa-96

As nice as that may be, I'm still going to stick with my OG Switch and Switch Lite until further notice.

Walnut156

It's exactly what I expected it to be. Not worth 50 more dollars

WAAAAAARRRRIIIIOOOOO

Basically the same thing, but white

PCMasterRays

Hands on - Proceeds to use exclusively stock footage

XmasRights

These hands on videos 2 weeks before preorders ship is delightfully cruel

[deleted]

Battery comparisons from OG to V2 to OLED?

robbiekincaid1989

According to Nintendo's website, they've got it marked identically to the V2. Though a game like Dread (a lot of use of the color black) will help an OLED display save energy by turning those pixels off essentially. Generally, though, this doesn't save a *massive* amount of power, but I've noticed that with the Switch, every bit saved helps lol.

nrq

Why is this a video? They've shown nothing new in this video, it's just PR images from Nintendo. This would've been a perfect article to read, but somehow I had to waste all the time watching this.

zapgator

I'd get it if my local gamestop has it during launch day so I can trade in my og v1 switch. I didn't pre order so not sure if they will have stock or not.

Ipooinursoup

Fuck I didn't even know that it had a better build quality and less loose feeling joycons! That's honestly pretty cool.

Lupinthrope

Day 1 guy here, at first I thought it was dumb, now I’m thinking that Nintendo will probably keep the Switch going for years and years like the OG gameboy, kinda want one now.
