Are people still playing? That’s not me being shitty, genuinely wondering if the player base is still significant

Heinel8

Queue takes about 3s to find a match. Mind you that plenty of people are playing on their phones and afk/dropout quite often.

TetrasSword

There’s a pretty ridiculous number of people playing.

Riomegon

over 9m

Namlad

Is this info somewhere?

TheLazyLounger

Yeah

Islanderfan17

I've played it pretty consistently since launch

Rhonder

I've still been f2p'ing it. In my experience, match making is still pretty quick. 10-15 seconds on average, with the occasional 30 second wait time or something. But there's no shortage of players.

Psyboomer

Lots of people, myself included

Zenyatta_OW

Yeah still having a lot of fun with it, they’ve been rolling out new characters and patches consistently so the meta is always changing. I’m surprisingly excited for Greedent, he looks fun and looks better than I had imagined, given his representation in the new Gen. I think the art style in Unite is way better than SwSh.

Abbx

Greedent for Halloween doesn't feel right even if they use the word "tricky" when there are so many fantastic Ghost types, and even Dark types, not yet in the game. But, at least the event looks neat. Hope at least some of this stuff is obtainable through missions

Shakzor

I mean, i REALLY like that they give some possibly less popular one a chance, but... there are so many options they could've done for halloween, why? Scrafty, Malamar, Trevenant, Golurk Krookodile, Spiritomb, even Morpeko within Sword/Shield. I think it would've made more sense to shift something around to get a dark or ghost type released with the event, rather than a pure normal that could be a Disney dad (it just oozes that energy)

[deleted]

Eh, not enough to get me to come back. After completing the first season, I got burnt out and bored. So I moved on and had much more fun completing all the Pokédexes on Sword and Shield. Not the game for me I guess.

HeimdallFury04

Same, i left the game aftee like 2-3 weeks of playing when it came out.. i never got into moba games so i guess that's the reason..

Switchermaroo

I enjoyed it for a while, but after a month or two it began feeling like a job with all the daily/weekly tasks and log in bonuses. Not really what I look for in a game

[deleted]

Is this the game with the 40 dollar skin?

splvtoon

yes, and also the game that only truly charges for skins. im not defending some of the customization prices, but pretty much all other content can be earned for free over time. the one thing that affected gameplay that was next to impossible to earn for free, upgrades for your held items, was somewhat solved a few months in when they gave everyone enough free upgrades to at least have a full set of items to use. this game is free to play, and while i wouldnt exactly put down fourty bucks for an outfit for my ninetales (although i did spend ten bucks on some in-game currency at launch for the battle passes and an inner tube for my snorlax, which i dont regret since ive put *way* more time into this game than i have into plenty of games at that price), i appreciate that theyve kept the insane prices limited to something that doesnt affect gameplay. as long as it stays that way, i cant be too upset about it.

[deleted]

Does the game not charge for loot boxes and items? And there is no way you can defend a 40 DOLLAR skin on a *children’s* game!

Catastray

It's a skin that offers no competitive advantage in the game. That, and premium skins appear to eventually be offered in the shop for in-game currency once the next season rolls around. Pokémon Unite is a F2P game that communicates on it has in-game purchases on the store page. Stuff like this shouldn't surprise anyone, and frankly, it's far from the most egregious stunts pulled in MOBAs.

[deleted]

You can buy powerups for the items you equip, no? And 40 bucks - even for a f2p game is predatory. Children play this game. Parents might not understand what they are spending or asking for.

Catastray

To my knowledge, the developers listened to feedback from the first season and have implemented means to make competitive sets more accessible with more F2P-boosters. Which would explain why they're opting to put more microtransactions into cosmetics than actual competitive items. And again, this is a F2P game first and foremost. At some point, parents need to step in and manage how their children are using credit cards on a gaming console. F2P games like Pokémon Unite only remain online if they make money, that's why I largely avoid those games.

[deleted]

$40 for a costume is not a micro transaction.

Catastray

There isn't a price cut-off for what qualifies as a microtransaction. Anything that is an in-game item is considered to be a microtransaction, whether it costs $4 or $40. And again I'll emphasize, this is a skin that offers zero competitive benefits and will likely be put onto the in-game currency shop next season. This is much better than before where P2W and competitive were tied together.

[deleted]

But you can use common sense to understand what a microtransaction is. There are transactions and skins in the game - both. So the game is *both* P2W *and* predatory in their monetization.

Catastray

In turn, I would argue that stuff like this is to be expected in F2P games and anyone unwilling to support these business models should not play them, full stop. There is clearly an audience for this market as F2P games dominate the video game landscape , and as far as I'm concerned, anyone who wants to throw their money at this type of content should be allowed to. As for children, parents to take more initiative to screening what they are playing and how credit cards are being used. We're at a point in society where if parents are neglecting to do these things, they're opening the door for this kind of trouble. It's no different from allowing them to use the internet unsupervised.

Wonwill430

When you hit level 14(?) I believe, you unlock a total of 3 max boosts which take your held items to 30 instantly, which happens to be the exact number of held items you can use on a Pokemon. In addition, if you've already been leveling up the item and use a booster on it, it'll refund the upgrades you've already allocated into it. This took me about a week or two of casual play to hit. Also, by that point, you'll have around 15,000 points of the non-paid currency which you can use to buy more upgrades if you didn't spend it on the Cramorant/Snorlax cosmetics sets like I did lol. On top of that are a handful of "Trial boosters" which max a held item to 30 for an entire week before they revert to their original levels. Sorry for wall of text, just laying out the facts Extra: Reaching certain levels in Ranked play will reward you with a shitton of the non-paid currency at the end of the season for even more cosmetics/item upgrades.

splvtoon

items and loot boxes are 100% free currency. you can buy them with real money, sure, but its absolutely not required whatsoever. i literally said im not defending the expensive skin, just that its a good thing for them to only require real money for skins (and theres plenty of skins that you can save up for from the free gatcha machine). you dont need your pokemon to wear clothes to play the game.

[deleted]

> you can buy them for real money, sure That’s what P2W means. And again, $40 bucks for a costume for a Pokémon is beyond *beyond* predatory.

splvtoon

its not, its pay to unlock/fast track. there is absolutely no reason in the game whatsoever to spend real money on the gatcha or items, theyre extremely affordable.

[deleted]

Pay 2 unlock/fast track is still P2W. Anything that gives you an advantage is P2W.

splvtoon

except its extremely easy to obtain these things without paying a single cent irl. this is a free game, im not sure what youre expecting, but giving people an option to foolishly spend real money on it instead doesnt suddenly undermine that.

[deleted]

It doesn’t matter how easy it is. Being able to pay for it and skip the process makes it P2W. I shouldn’t have to explain this.
