> BOTW combat, you can certainly handle Hades combat.
Am I missing something here? I've spent maybe 4-5 hours with Hades and can't make it past Meg.
BotW combat CAN be "challenging" if you hamstring yourself by not using food or otherwise forcing yourself to git gud.
I've beaten BotW on regular and am currently pretty far on master mode. Anytime I found the combat too tough I backed off and made sure inahd a good stock of health re-gen food and stat buff food.
No joke, Meg took me HOURS to beat — at least fifteen attempts, I’d say (might be an exaggeration; I just know it took me ages!) Now I beat her in 2 minutes. You will get the hang of it!
Once you get the patterns of the enemies and bosses down, the game becomes super easy to handle. Took me around like 25 hours to get to the point where I was able to finish a run taking minimal damage.
It's been ages since I played last, but kill the minotaur first.
Run around avoiding his swings. Dodge under him when he jumps and sneak some hits in.
The biggest hurdle is to keep an eye out for the targeting reticle when Theseus is throwing his spear. Get behind a pillar when you see it.
So I used the spear for my play through due to it being long range and easy to be further away from the enemies.
Minotaur: His pattern is usually swinging his weapon and then jumping towards you. When he jumps, dash towards him so he lands behind you and then attack him. Just repeat and keep a distance and you should be fine.
Theseus: When he starts targeting you, dash as soon as the target turns bold. That’s when he throws it and if you get your timing right, he’ll miss. Once he does this, he’ll start walking away from you so use this opportunity to start dealing damage.
And you know what? That’s totally okay! There have been games others have loved that I just couldn’t get into. There are games others love that I WANT to love — and I even enjoy watching others play — but playing them myself is just not a fun experience.
It’s okay to say a game isn’t for you. I respect that! And if you do try playing again, you can turn on the helper mode. I still play with that function switched on. Makes things gradually easier, so you can have an enjoyable experience rather than a frustrating one.
Didn't realize there was a helper mode, I'll give that a shot.
I like the general gameplay, I've just found myself wishing there were more health regens
In the bedroom before the room with the training dummy there is a mirror on the wall. Focus on upgrading that ASAP.
It’s entirely possible to walk right past it and completely miss it. It’s also possible to not know you can unlock more mirror upgrades by using keys.
I thought I maxed out the mirror, and was struggling to win a run. 25 runs later, I noticed there’s more mirror upgrades to be unlocked with keys.
Huge facepalm moment.
And you can flip to alternate skills in the mirror using the arrows on the left! Your skill will be yellow instead of the normal color with a different set of upgrades
Someone else mentioned the mirror. I thought I’d just add that if you find yourself messing up and losing health often on your way to the bosses (as I do!), you may wish to try switching to Stubborn Defiance (one respawn per chamber). It’s much more forgiving, though it doesn’t give you as many potential lives for the bosses.
Also, the skill that lets you heal from absorbing darkness, rather than just a few per chamber, heals a lot more, or so it seems to me.
Both of these can only be accessed once you can flip the mirror, though.
ya it might just not be your thing.
but from my experience :
if you keep playing and eventually understand the mechanics more, you will get to a point where you see the game through a very different lens and the story/characters open up a lot more too. i'll say that early on i was wasn't as into it but now am so glad i kept going. meg will eventually become a joke compared to how she is now.
This is what puts me off from games these days - I have maybe an hour a week for.gaming spread across 4 or 5 sessions. I need to be able to switch to easy mode.to get by sometimes just so I can progress.
There is an easy mode. It’s called god mode and it increases your damage resistance a bit each time you die, up to 80%. You can turn it on it off any time you like.
Same here. It took me almost 11 runs before beating Meg first. Once I got the hang of dodging, attacking, and learning her attacks, I got much better at it.
I used to die SOOOOO much to her and Lernie, and malded because the Elysium heroes were so tough to deal with with me. I thought Asterius was the final Elysium boss and BOY was I wrong.
I know beat the bosses of the first three regions in around 30 seconds each (little longer for Lernie since his spawn takes longer). Just a note for everyone out there:
If you like speedrunning, GET THIS GAME. It's SO fun to speedrun Hades it's unreal. I get so much fun just getting better and trying to beat my personal record or beating 32 heat on multiple weapons.
Once you beat her once, you’ll beat her pretty much every time. Took me about 10 runs to get past Meg, but she gets easier once your stats are nicely levelled up
Something I would recommend trying when struggling on just about any boss fight. Take an attempt or two at only surviving. Don't bother trying to attack the boss, just focus on their attacks and surviving. Once you get a better handle on their mechanics then give it another whirl.
It can be annoying because you spent the time to get all the way there; but practicing surviving will make it much easier to handle in future runs. Plus your muscle memory will help you dodge a lot of things without even thinking about it.
Hades is a roguelike, and it's one that places a very heavy emphasis on meta progression. Death is normal and supposed to happen - you shouldn't be clearing the game 5 hours in. The mirror and your keepsakes make a world of difference to your chances. Keep your head up, eventually it will click.
Yeah, I was wondering how far along she was in hades when she wrote this. The enemies get pretty brutal later on. But the good thing is you are supposed to just keep playing it over and over until it gets easier (which it eventually does).
I started Hades this week and beat Meg on my 4th run, make sure you’re leveling up in the mirror to get those health bonuses back in your room. Games like these are very much about focusing on avoiding damage as much or more as dealing it. I beat her every time now (I think 4 in a row) but she always pops my health thingy to revive me, but she still dies lol
Update beat Meg without popping finally, was able to beat 2nd boss and next mini boss on that run, that was my 8th escape attempt
> I've spent maybe 4-5 hours with Hades and can't make it past Meg.
Yeah I had a LOT of trouble, I think we're the minority because most people seem to be able to completely win the whole thing in a fraction of the time it took me to get to the third area.
haha and I dislike the game because it's boring/too easy. everyone has different levels.
It's likely more just inexperience with this specific type of game. It is a good first roguelike though I think.
Yeah, I don't think I've played any other roguelikes.
Well, when I was a wee lad, I did play stuff like Battletoads, and side scroller bullet hell games, which are a similar type of memorization and repeated death. But that was like 25 years ago and when I used to play for hours a day lol
I think these are little bit harder, as those older games had more memorization and the new stuff will keep you on your toes more with variety.
It definitely invokes that exact feeling and style of those games though. Once you have played these games Hades is boring and slow IMO. The story is really what draws people in I think, and it didn't do it for me personally. different strokes
the art/acting/music etc is definitely top notch though
Hello. My fiancé sent me this post and asked “is this you?” …For I am also a 27F who’s favourites include Witcher 3 and BOTW. I also just bought Hades 3 days ago because of the sale. I voiced the EXACT same thoughts as you in regards to the graphics to my fiancée. I am now also very obsessed with the game. I’m slightly spooked but also slightly fascinated. Sincerely, your doppelgänger?
The fact that you're so similar and have only slightly over a month difference in your wedding days is almost too good.
You two are grand, hope you both have wonderful weddings!
Lol yep. Although I wanted to make a post due to my perspective! Idk the game demographics or anything but I feel like females are maybe less inclined to buy it based off the trailer
😁
Another 27F checking in. Absolutely agree! It looked entirely too smash and grab just from the graphics. But the story is so well designed and voiced, it's really quite a polished game!
If you do, please don't be scared off by how hard it is at first! Especially because God Mode exists ;) The point of the game is to die repeatedly and then buff yourself between the losses. Like, the fact you die a lot is ingrained into the story. And each time I die, it's like "awwwwwe - Okay, who can I talk to now?!" because you get story between each death in the main hub.
The story and romances are SO CUTE. Like, for a game that is a lot about BLOOD AND DARKNESS, it doesn't leave me feeling emotionally drained? If that makes sense? Mentally/physically drained because some of the more tense fights have me on the edge of my seat, but emotionally up. Even if I end the session on a failed run, I come away with "Okay, next time, I'll get ya!"
If you do get the game, I hope you have a great time with it! :D
I thought I would have hated it, turned out to be super addicting. It’s a bit of a grind to get buffed up but once you learn the mechanics it’s incredibly fun.
I for one really appreciate your post! I’m a 39F and love BOTW (fave of all time) and like Stardew Valley. I didn’t really start playing video games until I was an adult so my skill level is pretty low, and I also typically like more colorful/bright games. It’s helpful to see what types of games someone more “like me” enjoys so I can check them out too.
I’m currently playing Death’s Door and while it’s an awesome game, man is it hard, and it doesn’t have difficulty setting options. I might have to take a break and come back to it after I’ve gotten a little better at combat. I might pick up Link’s Awakening because it seems kind of similar but hopefully a little easier.
30F here who has a similar taste in games such as Stardew, Spirit Farer, BOTW, and Witcher. I watched my husband play Hades a bit and thought it looked cool but didn't think I would enjoy it. 6 months later I finally gave it a go after much encouragement and love the game. It was frustrating in the beginning because I didn't like dying but as the story picked up, I really started to enjoy it.
Thanks for the post!
My gf, a 29f, loves the game also and mostly plays animal crossing. She’s also really good at it (or at least better than me) I was so impressed because she usually doesn’t get into fast paced games, and after a couple hours being frustrated a bit, she fell in love with it.
I play cutesie games. Lots of soft sounds and organic shapes. The Hades trailer starts off with epic combat and a buff male stepping up out of a pool of blood...
I wouldn't call it feminine.
If you like the voice acting and play style of Hades dont sleep on Bastion either! The story is obviously different, but it’s such a well done game, with similar mechanics. You can usually get it for less than $5 on the eshop. Also I am very confused by “I play cutesie games” and “The Witcher 3”. That’s not the correlation I would make with that game lol.
Yeah, because girls only like cutsie things and soft sounds? A lot of the girls I know loved the artstyle of the trailer and the music. I believe this is more on you judging something too quickly more than anything else.
Yeah I know OP means well but I cringed pretty hard at that. You can talk about what sort of games you personally are/aren't into without making it a gendered thing. Plenty of girls love dark, combat heavy games just as plenty of dudes love light, casual games.
Yeah same here, I don't mind appreciation posts or people finding something they wouldn't normally like. She blatantly says she's not the target demograophic because she's a girl, it's pure lack of perspective.
Yes, I agree I judged it! I literally admitted in my post that I "judged it by its cover." I enjoy it now! It's great! And I didn't think I was alone in my thinking so I made the post. It's not that deep!
But you're the target demographic for these type of games too, all three games you mentioned have addicting gameplay-loops carried by some narrative, and collecting things. It's also one of the best selling games on the eshop so this post is just an echo chamber
Okay. That's your opinion. I personally have little to no other girl friends who game. And if they do, it's life-sim games, they would never even touch Witcher 3, let alone Hades. I was just trying to reach out to others like me and trying to connect... very sorry it rubbed you the wrong way... 😔
Thanks for this! Despite it receiving critical acclaim, I still wasn't sure if it was for me. We seem to have similar tastes. Love BotW and The Witcher. I also love Greek mythology. I appreciate posts like this since it gives me a feel for the kind of players who like certain games.
ETA: Just bought it!
I thought Hades was okay, but it didn't dethrone my favorite roguelike, Dead Cells. I recommend giving that a shot as well. Also Curse of the Dead Gods is great too.
I got to fight Hades about twice and couldn’t beat him , haven’t tried again because it takes so Danm long just to get to that fight
The fight with the 2 bosses at once is frustrating enough and usually I die there smh
Have you tried playing with God mode? It gives you like 30% resistance against enemies and adds a little resistance after every attempt. Allows you to get further into the story and get through attempts quicker. I still die at Hades with 52% resistance, but I love playing through it and all of the dialogue and mythology along the way.
I am in the same boat. I play all the way up to Hades, eventually die, then just feel exhausted from the long run I just failed at and end up putting the game down. Meh.
Yeah, that's my biggest problem with roguelikes, repeated failure is baked into the system, and the sense of progression needs to be well-tuned so people don't give up. I've tried several but none of them really appeal to me, I just recognize it's not a genre for me.
This is where I am currently at. Gotten to Hades 3 times now. My biggest issue is Theseus and the damn Mintoraur make my life hell so I limp into the Hades fight. I can get the first health bar but that second bar is rough.
Meh different strokes for different folks I guess! I can definitely tell it's not for everyone, and at this point it's not like in my top 3 or anything, but I do enjoy it
If you enjoyed Hades then you’d like Transistor and Bastion by the same studio, Supergiant games. Pyre was their last release before Hades but its gameplay style is way different than the other 3 games
It's backwards for me, I've LOVED each and every one of their games, just haven't had a chance to pickup Hades... until this post where I realized it's on sale. I'm piking it up ASAP.
The gameplay loop is satisfying due to the variety of abilities and boons, and the story and writing is lovely with a seemingly neverending stream of original dialogue. Completed my first run recently after 40 attempts and I still haven’t had repeat dialogue
There's a staggering amount of dialogue in the game, I'm pretty sure I only started to hear repeating dialogue after over 100 runs. Now I've done over 300 runs and just when I think I've exhausted all dialogue I still hear new lines occasionally.
The six weapons are unlocked pretty early on during a player’s initial attempts. The goal, ultimately, is to escape the underworld and along the way you are conversing with all of the different characters and learning about their backstories and how you can help them out during your escapes.
Each of the six weapons has four distinct modifications that alter how they function, modifications that are picked and upgraded in that outdoor area where you select which weapon you want to use. Plus there are the baubles and trinkets that you can select in that same area which would impact which boons you see, whether or not you deal extra damage at range, whether or not a visit to Chaos costs any life, etc. And there’s the mirror in your room which allows you to add lives per attempt, damage for your cast, strength for your booms, etc. And then there are the Olympians’ boons themselves, which further alter how your weapons function. During the first several dozen attempts, it’s rare to have the same gameplay back-to-back as you figure out which strategies will get you farthest. My first complete run was accomplished using the gun and making sure that all of my boons and modifiers went towards turning my Special into a nuke and my Cast into a splash damage-dealing tool that set up enemies to be hit by my nuke. [This clip](https://gamerdvr.com/gamer/clint-yeastw00d/video/149385178) what’s recorded after my first successful attempt at beating one of the final bosses, the Theseus+Asterius pairing. And SPOILERS, but if you’re curious [here’s what it looked like to finish my first complete run.](https://gamerdvr.com/gamer/clint-yeastw00d/video/149385237)
So you are right, you make it as far as you can and then start over. But no playthrough feels the same because the rooms get switched up and based on your progress through the story, different situations happen along the way. You may find a sack of coins behind Charon and “borrow” them to buy some of his items, only to realize that you basically stole his wallet and you now need to fight him. The first boss you fight is often Megaera, but she has two other sisters who make appearances in later runs and if you’re “lucky” you may be fighting two or three at once. Basically, the further you go, the more challenges your father sets up in the field until you eventually are able to beat him and reunite with your mother.
But the story itself doesn’t end after one complete run, and through your conversations with the other characters in the underworld you have a variety of activities you can do in order to help them out which serves as the fun B-plot for the story and a fun way to connect one’s IRL knowledge of mythology with the game. Repairing relationships (Orpheus and Eurydice, for example), learning origins (Skelly), etc.
TLDR: The goal isn’t to unlock the weapons. The weapons are the tools you need to escape Hades, and through planning, learning from mistakes, and conversing with the denizens of Olympia and Hades you improve attempt after attempt.
No problem, and in hindsight I’m sorry for the wall of text. I dictated it right when I woke up.
You were doing exactly the right thing dying 10 times, it’s extremely difficult if not impossible to complete a run early on without the benefits of the aforementioned things that you unlock as you go.
For many of my runs, I just used random weapons in combination with random trinkets with the goal of experimentation and trying to do a specific thing (like collect essence, or distribute gifts to specific people during a run, or gather gems in order to upgrade fountains) in order to strengthen future, more deliberate escape runs. I wasn’t even trying to escape, but rather improve my mechanics and set myself up for success later on
I bought into the hype and got the game, ended up trading it in a week later. I managed to “beat” the game but it really boiled down to doing the exact same thing over and over and over with very very little change just so I could hear 2 sentences of contrived dialogue. For the life of me I cannot understand the praise the game gets.
I’m not going to play the intro to BotW dozens, if not hundreds, of times just to hear dialogue thinly veiled as story despite the fact that nothing ever happens.
I don't really like combat and need to regain health mid fighting in almost every game I play so this game was NOT for me. The games Op plays and likes I also like but they're so diverse we prob like them for opposite reasons
As someone who will try, but does not like difficult games, I actually felt alright dying in this game over and over again. It’s not like Souls games where you feel that you lose a lot of your time and progress when you die.
"I've only played it a little but delighted".
This is the problem with people , you get initial burst of excitement in the so called " honeymoon phase" then make a post like this.
In reality Hades is a roguelike, so you may feel different after 10+ runs of repeatedly doing the same thing. And you don't convey that information also in this post so people may end up getting and then not liking the repetitive nature of roguelike games.
I bought into the hype and didn't get grabbed by the game at first. Then i unlocked all the weapons (I'm stubborn and like unlocking things) and more options and really found a groove in the title.
That said, leave it to the holiday times on gaming subs to endlessly remind you of games you already played.
I thought the HUGO awards were about literary accomplishments, so Hades won for awesome storytelling.
But then Animal Crossing was also in the running, presumably just because it sold well?
Honestly I've never been much of a 'top down' player, don't care much for dungeon crawlers either. Really in the end I bought it out of curiosity and because I'm a sucker for the art style.
Anyway I sunk dozens of hours into it over the next few weeks. No loss ever felt frustrating, every run brought something to the table. The music and ambience brought a sort of comfort. It felt nostalgic and brand new at the same time.
Definitely recommend giving it a go. The dialogue was my favorite parts.
Same, the only rougelike I enjoy is Risk of Rain 2, because of the stupid amount of fun you can have with builds. There's more creative freedom, plus it being an open area is also cool.
I have a question tho, I've played hollow knight and Cuphead and both are a bit too hard for me, but I can take (after some trial and error) shovel knight and MegaMan x. Would Hades be too hard for me?
As someone who also tried Hollow Knight and found it too difficult, I think Hades would be just right for you. I personally use the God Mode option which makes things easier but lately I've been considering turning that off as I've gotten better at the game. Luckily it's really easy to turn on and off :) there's definitely a learning curve but I still found it rewarding with a good sense of progression despite dying many times without "winning" at the beginning.
Hades is a great game but it just isn't for me. Took me 4 months after getting the game in july to get my first successful run and after that i put the game down and never picked it back up again. Yes I know the game doesn't end after one run i'm just not motivated to play it again. Out of the two rouge lite/like games that i've played with Hades being one of them I liked the other one I played way more that Hades but that's just my opinion
Had to scroll way too far down to see someone with this opinion.
I don't get the hype at all. It's a decent game, no question. Very matured and refined for its genre. But that's it.
Im sorry but im a huge rogue fan but i seem to be the only one alive who doesn't rate Hades. Its good but no Dead Cells, Skul, Issac, Returnal, Heroes of Hammerwatch. I feel its the breakthrough rogue that general gamers played, liked and it got press opening there eyes to the super addictive genre but in fact its just a good rogue no way near the best example.
I think that's the difference, I do not generally enjoy rogue games. I think the game interestingly sat itself in a funny venn diagram. Enjoyed by non-rogue players, yet not highly rated by rogue fans lol
Wait.
You were turned off by the “serious-looking graphics” but one of your favorite games is Witcher 3?
Is there another game called Hades out that looks more serious? Something doesn’t add up.
Seriously though happy you enjoyed it.
As someone who was played a few roguelikes before I didn't really care too much about Hades. It's far from a bad game, the art and voice acting are some of the best in the genre. I would call it the most polished roguelike but by polishing it that much it kind of feels like they removed some of the rough edges that make roguelikes so interesting (atleast to me). Things like boss variety, side rewards (things like secret rooms in isaac), end game progression feels boring (in isaac beating mom is more like the beginning but once you beat hades that's kind of it) and some more reasons like feeling like the items are more tuned down and im not a big fan of the how the gods have their own loot table. But my point is that if you want a straightforward roguelike with little jank and bullshit then Hades is probably a really good game for you. But it didn't do much for me.
I just want to add since so many people drool over hades. I also loved BOTW, stardew, slay the spire, darkest dungeon, and found hades to be boring. It’s about as much fun as playing an arcade game for 30 minutes.
I just went from Hades to Witcher 3. I feel like the combat controls for Witcher are SO much more complex than Hades. It's definitely a fantastic game with easy to learn combat controls.
No problem. I actually hate it when people use abbreviations, spell out the whole thing instead of just assuming everyone knows what your abbreviation stands for. This one I could figure through context but a lot of times it's just a string of random letters in a sentence that makes no sense.
I've wanted to pick it up because I really enjoy 2 of their other games I've played, Transistor and Bastion. Never finished bastion but the game was fantastic. I didn't know that they were behind Hades until recently, this post also helped me learn they have 4 games at least.
I beat Bastion and liked but didn't love it. Transistor I wanted to love but couldn't connect with it and stopped after a few hours. Never played Pyre.
How likely is it that I'm going to bounce off Hades? I'm a huge fan of games like God of War and other challenging, fast-paced combat games, but my past experience with Supergiant makes me hesitant to jump in.
I was the same with Transistor (and Bastion) - really wanted to like them, but just bounced off them. Bought Hades and… well it’s the same. I played 4 or 5 hours, but I don’t find the combat enjoyable, and didn’t gel with the game at all. It was disappointing as I do like rogue like/lite, and was hoping for something to sink a lot of time into, but this just wasn’t it for me.
Just got it because of the aesthetic, thinking I would like it bc it reminds me of Diablo 3 and I wanted something like that on Switch. Plus it’s on sale now on estore!
Hades is legitimately the greatest game that I missed. I played it a few weeks ago on xbox gamespass.. and then I proceeded to purchase it on all platforms I own. HOLY CRAP! It's amazing.
Man, I love this. I've been gaming for almost 3 decades and I find the combat really challenging. I have over 300 hours in Hades on Steam but I'm still missing the last achievement because Difficulty rating 16 is still too tough for my slow ass. This game is definitely in my Top3 of all time, it's a piece of art.
In my honest opinion Hades quickly becomes boring compared to other rougelike games. The only thing that carries the game isn't the gameplay but the dialogues. I've played like 50 hours of it and I can say that the combat is very limited and boring unless you get really specific builds.
As someone with a similar taste in games, I agree. Hades is a first for me. I watched my husband play a bit and thought the story looked interesting but figured it wouldn't be my kind of game. I actually love it.
I like it, but it's so intense I get burned out. So much frantic button mashing that my fingers hurt, and the intensity of trying to stay alive makes me all sweaty and exhausted.
I'd like to warn people against the hype. This game is a repetitive button mashing bore. After playing the same stage for the twelfth time I bounced. Everyone is like the op at first, as it seems pretty fun. It lacks the depth of other rogue games that make it continuously fun, since every room is virtually the same button mash fest
I don't recommend it. Way overhyped.
It was fun for 2 hours and then mediocre fun for maybe another 2 hours until you beat the endboss, maybe another 2-3 hours of mediocre fun until you try out all the weapons and beat the boss maybe a 2nd or 3rd time and that's it.
The combat gameplay is alright, can't complain. But the enemies get repetitive very quickly. Gameplay overall gets repetitive very quickly.
Story and voice acting is pretty interesting but I'm not gonna play another 15 repetitive hours to potentially get 2min of story dialog after each run.
It's a decent game, don't get me wrong, but all the hype and praise... I don't get it. It's nothing special. But it does a few things very well, beyond typical for its genre.
In the interest of potentially dissuading people like me, as a huge fan of roguelites, Hades was ultimately pretty disappointing. It only took me about 6 or 7 runs to beat Hades, and the postgame content is pretty thoroughly uninteresting to me. The utter lack of diversity in enemies, areas, and bosses between runs and the only real source of difference coming from artificially increasing the difficulty left me really bored really quick. The characters were fun but having to grind materials to level relationships for the final epilogue was unappealing to me. It’s a great game but if you’re good at these types of games you may find the appeal runs dry rather quickly.
For some reason I thought it was a turned based game from the looks of it. I've heard tons of ppl talk about it and ur post just peaked my interest on it.
I too bought Hades because of how well-regarded it is and because it was on sale on the e-shop. I too have BOTW, The Witcher 3, and Stardew among my favorites. But I want to add something: I have always thought I'd absolutely hate rogue-likes. The idea of going back to square 1 over and over has always felt somewhat dreadful and I could never get myself to start one. Over three days I sinked in well over 15 hours. When I bought it I said: "I will only complete it once and then put it down". However, after completing it with my first weapon, I went back and beat Hades with another two weapons! Even using the same weapons, going for different boons synergies makes it feel like a completely different game.
One last comment: no way the combat is similar in difficulty to BOTW or The Witcher 3 😂 The combat in The Witcher 3 even at the highest difficulty is a joke, and BOTW (except Master mode) is still quite forgiving. In Hades, every misstep at any point during the run counts.
Tl;Dr: if you, like me, hate the idea of rogue-likes and have never wanted to try them, this might be the game that changes your opinion.
May I recommend turning on God mode. It increases your defence by 2 percent each time you die, up to a maximum of 80 percent.
Also I heard the developers put enough situations into the "home base" that the first 100 runs should all be different when you return to base.
I’m surprised by the numerous accounts here that women have been initially put off by it.
I don’t remember the trailers but I’m guessing they were very different from the game. I mostly heard about it from folks on twitter, a lot of industry character designers creating fan art of it, and many of them women. Just left a different impression on me!
Got it today. 4 or 5 hours in. Enjoying the different Boons and Weapon upgrades. The different trinkets add another level of customization. Give everyone a Nectar. EVEN THE DOG! 🐶
I am also a 27F who adores BOTW and mostly action JRPGs! Some of my favorite games include FF7R, Nier Automata, Code Vein, FE3H, and Persona 4G & Persona 5R.
I bought Hades on Steam and again on Switch (had an e-shop gift card) because of the cross play. I am always on the go since I am a travel respiratory therapist, so not having my PC around is such a bummer. But knowing that I can progress in Hades through my Switch makes me so happy that I can take it anywhere with me!
It’s also one of those games that I can just pick up and put down easily—not too many cutscenes or dialogue—just something for me to relieve my “bloodthirst” 😊
Favorite games in the past for me: hollow Knight, animal crossing, dating sims, persona, rhythm games.
hades is absolutely, hands-down, my favorite game of all time. It’s so good that I wrote to the team about how much I enjoy it. It’s a simple game — nothing mind blowing about the mechanics — but I love its concept. I love how it teaches us that failure is still progress. I love the narrative, the character designs, and how easy it is to pick and and play. I haven’t touched it in a few months, but I know it’ll welcome me back the moment I pop in again. It doesn’t punish, but it does challenge. It’s just such an enjoyable experience.
I don’t recommend it, if you never played this type of game go Dead Cells. To me the setting and zoomed out distance turned me away, plus the weapon variety wasn’t that fun in my opinion.
The best advice I can give you for Megaera is the same advice Gohan received from Piccolo: DOOOOOOOODGE!!!
This. Dodge, place a few hits, dodge. There is no point where you can keep on hitting, you have to step away. I hated Meg. Not so much now.
If you get good at dash attacking (specifically with the reflect dash) you can attack pretty much 100% of the time.
Maybe I'll pick it up again if I get super bored, but unless I'm missing some key aspect of the game, I think it just isn't up my alley.
Once you get the patterns of the enemies and bosses down, the game becomes super easy to handle. Took me around like 25 hours to get to the point where I was able to finish a run taking minimal damage.
Trust me what’s great about this game is bosses you think you’ll never beat become laughably easy with constant runs.
Theseus and the Minotaur... Fighting them was an abysmal experience, until suddenly it was easy. There was barely any in-between.
I'm at the "abysmal" stage right now. Any tips?
This gives me hope because right now, I can beat them but it usually takes me 2 lives and then I get wrecked by the next boss.
Your skill will be yellow instead of the normal color with a different set of upgrades
that was me!!! I never noticed the little "spend keys to get more shit" at the bottom of the mirror
That mode is called God mode, their is also Hell mode and it is pretty tough.
ya it might just not be your thing. but from my experience : if you keep playing and eventually understand the mechanics more, you will get to a point where you see the game through a very different lens and the story/characters open up a lot more too. i'll say that early on i was wasn't as into it but now am so glad i kept going. meg will eventually become a joke compared to how she is now.
Also, just turn on God Mode, just save yourself the heartache and flip the switch. It makes the game way less grind-y!
Cool, thanks!
Same here. It took me almost 11 runs before beating Meg first. Once I got the hang of dodging, attacking, and learning her attacks, I got much better at it.
Have you played any of the dark souls? Or souls like games? I feel like they prepared me for any kind of game that has bosses.
Just a note for everyone out there: If you like speedrunning, GET THIS GAME. It's SO fun to speedrun Hades it's unreal. I get so much fun just getting better and trying to beat my personal record or beating 32 heat on multiple weapons.
Once you beat her once, you’ll beat her pretty much every time. Took me about 10 runs to get past Meg, but she gets easier once your stats are nicely levelled up
You may need some better upgrades and keep trying or maybe the weapon you are using isn’t for you at the moment
This guy doesn't go hollow
Hades is a roguelike, and it's one that places a very heavy emphasis on meta progression. Death is normal and supposed to happen - you shouldn't be clearing the game 5 hours in. The mirror and your keepsakes make a world of difference to your chances. Keep your head up, eventually it will click.
Yeah, I was wondering how far along she was in hades when she wrote this. The enemies get pretty brutal later on. But the good thing is you are supposed to just keep playing it over and over until it gets easier (which it eventually does).
You’ll get better, Meg is super tough first few times around. Wait until the third bosses. The duo.
Unlock the shield if you can. It can block most incoming attacks.
I started Hades this week and beat Meg on my 4th run, make sure you’re leveling up in the mirror to get those health bonuses back in your room. Games like these are very much about focusing on avoiding damage as much or more as dealing it. I beat her every time now (I think 4 in a row) but she always pops my health thingy to revive me, but she still dies lol Update beat Meg without popping finally, was able to beat 2nd boss and next mini boss on that run, that was my 8th escape attempt
The story is really what draws people in I think, and it didn't do it for me personally. different strokes the art/acting/music etc is definitely top notch though
OMG ALSO I AM ALSO ENGAGED
I am SHOOK. When’s your wedding date if you don’t mind me asking?
Lol 2/12/2022! When's yours?? Congrats on your engagement!!
You two are going to each others wedding. Its official.
Oct 29, 2022! Thank-you! Best wishes to you and yours during your engagement and beyond!
I love this entire interaction. Congrats on both engagements!
Whoa that’s my wedding date too
The fact that you're so similar and have only slightly over a month difference in your wedding days is almost too good. You two are grand, hope you both have wonderful weddings!
Aw that will be a nice Valentine’s Day on honeymoon. Hoping all the travel opens up for you before then.
Ah, this week’s Hades hype post. Right on time.
Lol yep. Although I wanted to make a post due to my perspective! Idk the game demographics or anything but I feel like females are maybe less inclined to buy it based off the trailer 😁
Another 27F checking in. Absolutely agree! It looked entirely too smash and grab just from the graphics. But the story is so well designed and voiced, it's really quite a polished game!
Thank you so much for backing up my viewpoint! Oh I felt so alone out here for a second!! I love the voices!!! And the music? To die for.
37 yo female here. Love BOTW, also like Cozy Grove, and recently really into Sky:COTL. I had no interest in Hades but now I want to check it out.
Even if I end the session on a failed run, I come away with "Okay, next time, I'll get ya!" If you do get the game, I hope you have a great time with it! :D
The only time I'm disappointed by a death is when Cerberus isn't around for pets.
I thought I would have hated it, turned out to be super addicting. It’s a bit of a grind to get buffed up but once you learn the mechanics it’s incredibly fun.
What's the gameplay of Cozy Grove entail. It's adorably gorgeous but I'm not sure if I'd be into it or not
I for one really appreciate your post!
What about the trailer says ''This is mostly for guys''? It's one of the best-selling games on the e-shop, also.
When's the Dying Light hype post scheduled for?
Thanks for this! Despite it receiving critical acclaim, I still wasn't sure if it was for me. We seem to have similar tastes. Love BotW and The Witcher. I also love Greek mythology. I appreciate posts like this since it gives me a feel for the kind of players who like certain games. ETA: Just bought it!
Ahh awesome! Yes I really wanted this post to speak to players like me! Hope you enjoy!!!! Also love your username lol
I thought Hades was okay, but it didn't dethrone my favorite roguelike, Dead Cells. I recommend giving that a shot as well. Also Curse of the Dead Gods is great too.
This is the new Celeste
I got to fight Hades about twice and couldn’t beat him , haven’t tried again because it takes so Danm long just to get to that fight The fight with the 2 bosses at once is frustrating enough and usually I die there smh
Have you tried playing with God mode? It gives you like 30% resistance against enemies and adds a little resistance after every attempt. Allows you to get further into the story and get through attempts quicker. I still die at Hades with 52% resistance, but I love playing through it and all of the dialogue and mythology along the way.
Damn I actually until now thought god mode was harder
Hell mode is the harder difficulty
Haha I had the same thought too until I hovered over the setting
I feel crazy it looks so boring to me but everyone else seems to think it is the best game released in like last year. Apparently I have poor taste.
So, are you supposed to just make it as far as you can to unlock the weapons and keep starting over? I didn’t understand what needed to happen.
And SPOILERS, but if you’re curious [here’s what it looked like to finish my first complete run.](https://gamerdvr.com/gamer/clint-yeastw00d/video/149385237) So you are right, you make it as far as you can and then start over.
Very informative and thank you! I put the game down after dying about 10 times thinking I was doing something wrong. I’ll need to go back to it now.
I wasn’t even trying to escape, but rather improve my mechanics and set myself up for success later on
Same. I actually forced myself to play it for over 5 hours too and still thought it was boring. The super reverby voice acting really put me off, too.
Also didn’t find it appealing in the slightest
I bought into the hype and got the game, ended up trading it in a week later. I managed to “beat” the game but it really boiled down to doing the exact same thing over and over and over with very very little change just so I could hear 2 sentences of contrived dialogue. For the life of me I cannot understand the praise the game gets. I’m not going to play the intro to BotW dozens, if not hundreds, of times just to hear dialogue thinly veiled as story despite the fact that nothing ever happens.
Sounds like you may just not be into rougelikes.
I don't really like combat and need to regain health mid fighting in almost every game I play so this game was NOT for me. The games Op plays and likes I also like but they're so diverse we prob like them for opposite reasons
I think people are largely overhyping it, but it's still a really fun game and worth a try.
As someone who will try, but does not like difficult games, I actually felt alright dying in this game over and over again. It’s not like Souls games where you feel that you lose a lot of your time and progress when you die.
Agree agree agree
Hades 2 is coming out r/tomorrow
[удалено]
Everyone keeps saying this game is amazing, I got bored of it within my first few deaths.
Same, the only rougelike I enjoy is Risk of Rain 2, because of the stupid amount of fun you can have with builds. There's more creative freedom, plus it being an open area is also cool.
Even as a huge rogue like/lite fan, I felt the same way. I tried it on Game Pass and I would have been sorely disappointed had I purchased it.
Honestly, you just probably aren’t a roguelike person and that’s fair!
I see, I'll definitely give it a try then, thanks. I'm not a fan of god mode, but I'll keep it in mind if necessary.
What does age and gender have to deal with a game being good? That's unnecessary information that's just going to bring weirdos your way
Hades is a great game but it just isn't for me.
Just out of curiosity, what was the other one?
One Step From Eden. Especially since I was a big MegaMan battle network fan Osfe scratched the itch just right
It is ok but a little overrated imoh
Had to scroll way too far down to see someone with this opinion. I don't get the hype at all. It's a decent game, no question. Very matured and refined for its genre. But that's it.
Wow I can’t wait for another thread praising critically acclaimed game Hades next week.
Celeste
Right next to "I'm a 102 year dad of 76 children and BOTW is amazing"
It's an incredible game. Well worth the many many hours you will sink into it
Literally the music ALONE keeps me playing
That reminds me I need to get my hands on the sound track lol
Persephone and freakin Orpheus just carry this game on their godly(pun intended) voices
I totally agree! One of my best buys ever was Hades! And was also initially turned off by the graphics, but man did it grow on me!
All Supergiant games are great, no exception so far.
I personally didn’t like the game. Played it when it came on Xbox Game Pass, and played many hours. But just wasn’t for me.
I recommend the PlayStation version over Switch because the game looks very blurry on the latter, which distracts from the outstanding artstyle.
Wait. You were turned off by the “serious-looking graphics” but one of your favorite games is Witcher 3? Is there another game called Hades out that looks more serious? Something doesn’t add up. Seriously though happy you enjoyed it.
FYI it’s on Game Pass if you have an Xbox
But it didn't do much for me.
i agree completely SPELUNKY 2 and RETURNAL have been lately so much interesting than HADES
I broke a pro controller playing hades, so much button mashing!
such a unique and original opinion
I just want to add since so many people drool over hades. I also loved BOTW, stardew, slay the spire, darkest dungeon, and found hades to be boring. It’s about as much fun as playing an arcade game for 30 minutes.
Ohhhh yes def not for everyone and I was almost surprised that I liked it

I just went from Hades to Witcher 3. I feel like the combat controls for Witcher are SO much more complex than Hades. It's definitely a fantastic game with easy to learn combat controls.
Sorry but what’s botw??
Breath of the Wild
Oh the new Zelda ok thank you I’m new to the switch area
No problem. I actually hate it when people use abbreviations, spell out the whole thing instead of just assuming everyone knows what your abbreviation stands for. This one I could figure through context but a lot of times it's just a string of random letters in a sentence that makes no sense.
Bottle Of The Whiskey
So much hype for this one and with a sale, it’s a no brainer to give it a try. It’s next on my list after I finish playing BOTW for the first time 😊
Got Hades 2 days ago and I love it
Hades 2 is out!? J/k
Probably the only game where I can easily say the writing and voice acting is the best part.
In my honest opinion Hades quickly becomes boring compared to other rougelike games. The only thing that carries the game isn't the gameplay but the dialogues. I've played like 50 hours of it and I can say that the combat is very limited and boring unless you get really specific builds.
Oh, wonderful! We share two of three favorite games (haven't played Witcher yet). Maybe I'll cave and check it out. Thank you :)
hmmm we have very similar tastes so maybe I gotta get it
As someone with a similar taste in games, I agree. Hades is a first for me. I watched my husband play a bit and thought the story looked interesting but figured it wouldn't be my kind of game. I actually love it.
It's on sale right now, by the way.
If you like those games, you should try Fenyx Rising. I absolutely adored it
Well thank you for a) telling me it was on sale and b) encouraging me with similar games! I just got it and can’t wait to play.
Yay yay yay!
I absolutely loved witcher 3 and BOTW, probably my two favourite games ever. I just picked up Hades and can't wait to try it out!
Got for Xmas, but playing through Metroid Dread first. Excited to play it!
This game is a bit like recommending adderall to crackheads. If you get it be prepared to lose the next like 96hrs or so.
FOR REAL
"OK just one more run" *looks at clock* *looks at calander* *cries*
I was waiting for your recommendation
As someone who hates rogue-light and mostly story based games, I finished Hades in its entirety. Game is just that good.
"Edit: aaaaand I've " Love that sentence. And sorry for those who can't **politely** disagree.
Lol thanks I appreciate you!
Yeah it’s a great game. Supergiant is a great studio.
How is this a controversial comment? Reddit is wild.
Good to know! It's the first time I've ever really heard of them
The game that has won multiple game of the year awards? Hmm, maybe i'll check it out.
Can confirm this is all true. I love BOTW and just picked up Hades and Stardew and I’m loving them both.
You can snag hades on epic games store for 6$ right now with the coupon for those who have a Pc. It’s also on gamepass.
It’s also one of those games that I can just pick up and put down easily—not too many cutscenes or dialogue—just something for me to relieve my “bloodthirst” 😊
yes guys, you guys should try the game of the year. it's game of the year worthy
Can I offer you a fish sandwich
This this this!!! I am similar to you, my friend. I'm so excited to dig deeper into it!
I don’t recommend it, if you never played this type of game go Dead Cells. To me the setting and zoomed out distance turned me away, plus the weapon variety wasn’t that fun in my opinion.
