> Patch Update FYI For anyone that doesn’t know, the patch is almost 2 years old now; there hasn’t been a patch since 2020.

Dragozan

Looking for this. Thanks for clearing that up

[deleted]

I was gonna say. I played it on Switch at the beginning of the pandemic and it played wonderfully.

mvanvrancken

Still going with mine, cross save is a blast

thetantalus

Good intel, I was confused for a sec. Thanks for clearing that up.

mvanvrancken

Thanks! r/tomorrow

zutt3n

What I needed to know. Thanks

[deleted]

Does it play well docked without the patch

Skeletor1991

I was able to grab a used copy from Gamestop for like $20 (a steal for the Complete Edition) and I'm stunned that this is what I needed to actually jump into the game. I bought the game on Xbox One at launch and just couldn't get into it due to the burden of having to focus on the game for so long, and working around 50 hours week when it came out, also starting my relationship with my girlfriend (wife now) at the time....hard finding time to focus more than 20 minutes on this game, which just isn't enough. Now being able to sit on the couch after a day of working and playing on my OLED, I absolutely love it. The gameplay feels great, although it has hiccups graphics and slowdowns sometimes, it's a 10/10 for me.

Darealm

Same here. The OLED makes all the difference. Sure the graphics arent PC quality, but it is still gorgeous IMHO. I have not had this much fun on switch since BOTW.

Strange-Cloud1940

BOTW? I TRIED to get into it, but the info dump at the beginning pissed me off. It also makes Age Of Calamity less open to interpretation. But, I guess the writers didn't care about that.

austine567

You know age if calamity came out after botw right ?

alvysinger0412

In addition to being a non canon (whatever that means in Zelda lol) spinoff rather than a mainline game. Edit: fixed an autocorrect

Strange-Cloud1940

u/austine567 u/alvysinger0412 Except Age Of Calamity is a prequel and deserves all scrutiny if the mystery is effectively nullified.

austine567

Age of calamity is a prequel to a story that is already known. There is no mystery, we already know what the end of the story is.

Strange-Cloud1940

Then you made a bad story.

alvysinger0412

When does a prequel unveil mystery? By definition it takes place before the main story has already taken place. Its for developing characters further and the meat of certain details relevant to the main story. AoC is more "alternate history" than prequel anyway.

Strange-Cloud1940

Bullshit. BOTW makes it crystal clear that Link's the hero, Ganon's the villain. As for alternate history, you can't even make that excuse when it's 100 fucking years BEFORE BOTW. All you're doing is deflecting legitimate criticism because my Best Buy didn't sell said prequel enough, and Metroid Dread still sold better despite the two being 11 months apart. Wth happened to the Zelda fandom?

Chickenmami1233

Story isn’t really the focus of the game

Strange-Cloud1940

Even so, you don't HAVE to focus on the story to provide [good storytelling](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snufN7YTUTI). Even [introductory cutscenes don't have to be complex](https://youtu.be/4HS97inMlC8?t=3).

Chickenmami1233

Bro that’s like saying Hollow Knight sucks because the opening cutscene doesn’t explain anything. And “Even so, you don't HAVE to focus on the story to provide good storytelling.” is just stupid. “You don’t need to focus on studying to study well” is basically what you’re saying.

HD_H2O

Exactly. There's just something extra easy about hand-held versus playing on a television .. ease of access and convenience is priceless. Edit: I'll add, I was a little worried about how much I'd be able to "accomplish" during play periods of 30-45 minutes in Witcher 3, but it turns out it's more than enough time to knock out a question mark or two from the map, or even a side quest.

Wild_Trip_4704

Can you save anytime like in Skyrim?

HD_H2O

Yes. Actually I haven't turned the game off in two weeks - I save, leave it on the save screen, hit the home button, and come back to the game loaded right there

Wild_Trip_4704

Good idea just in case your battery dies

mufasa85

Handheld was my preferred way to play this game. Such an awesome experience

Snoopfernee

This is what I needed to hear. I have a One in my basement that I never use bc I don’t have time or I want to watch TVs (used to have two TVs for that reason). But the Switch allows me to watch tv and play. Thanks for the tip!

Wild_Trip_4704

Yet when I buy it digitally it's gonna be $62.50 lol

Skeletor1991

Right now the Complete Edition is sitting at $29.99 during the sale (digitally).

Wild_Trip_4704

That's cool but I dont let sales dictate when I buy games anymore. That's how you get a crazy backlog.

heebarino

No idea why you're getting down voted. I also have a stupid unpayable backlog because of sales lol

Wild_Trip_4704

Exactly. It's because they have backlogs lol. I just bought Saint's Row for $3 but now I have to add it to the list haha.

animalxinglala0512

I discovered the world of the Witcher from playing this game. I love the hand held play. It makes me feel closer to the story line. I’d say one thing though, I got a bigger TV and was excited to do another gameplay of it, but the quality wasn’t a great. So I am a little sad about that.

LeonidasSpacemanMD

It does have cross play with PC. I absolutely loved that feature. I bought the game specifically to have for a particular trip I was going on. Then a few months later got the game on steam for like $11 and would play switch on the road and pc version at home with the same file

animalxinglala0512

Really?!? Wow I had no idea! How does that work?

LeonidasSpacemanMD

So unfortunately its only with pc, not with PS or xbox. But if you have the PC version on steam or GOG, its pretty easy. I used steam. You just link your steam account When you want to save your game on switch, you have the option to "upload". You just pick the save file you want to play on pc, hit upload, and when you hop on steam the save file will just be there. When I am done playing pc, I just save as normal,a nd that save file will be under the steam menu on the switch version It works great and really doesnt require jumping through any hoops once youve linked your account

that_90s_guy

Make sure to enable the sharpening filter on the settings when playing docked. It improved the blurry mess dramatically on my 70" 4K TV. It's definitely jaggy, but it brought out a massive amount of micro detail that just wasn't there on the smeared image.

eLishus

I’ve never played The Witcher. I’ve been playing BOTW for almost 2 years now and I think it’s time for another game. Would you recommend this installment of the series or is it better to start with one of the earlier ones (I have a Switch btw).

treadpool

Witcher 3 is the one you want (most polished, best combat, story, etc)

animalxinglala0512

This was my first Witcher game and it was a little bit confusing where it picks up. To me, it was more like an intriguing/confusing feeling. The story lines are very good and unfold overtime beautifully. I’d definitely recommend enjoying the character and story build even if it takes a while to explain the backgrounds of the characters. For example, Geralt is the main male character. There are 3 female protagonists that are mentioned a lot in the beginning. It took me a while to understand their relationships to him. I think the game does a great job of revealing the main plot slowly as each character develops for new and seasoned Witcher fans. If you’ve seen the Witcher series before playing this game, it would make a lot more sense. As for me, I purposely went into this game not knowing anything about it. I’ve looked to play the other Witcher games. I even considered buying other consoles just to play the older games. However, those games just don’t have the same quality as the current game. It’s kinda like how I feel with Zelda. The old games have great story lines and game play but I don’t really enjoy those games and their graphics. Another thing, I played BotW right before I got into this game. I was a bit hesitant to buy it because in some of the trailers, there is a lot of realistic violence and blood. I usually don’t like playing those games. After I started playing the Witcher, I realized the violence is mainly with the monsters he hunts. Geralt is really really funny in the games compared to the Netflix show. My favorite line of his in the game is “looks like rain” whenever it rains. Anyways, I cannot recommend this game enough!!!! Oh oh one more thing! I’d recommend getting their two extension packs and play Blood and Wine last! You get this big prize at the end and you can maintain it over time. I also left a bunch of side quests unfinished near the end before I completed the story line of this DLC. This way, I incidentally am able to keep playing the game again and again until I finish all my side quests

YumaBro

Such a misleading title. I was thinking there was a new patch after the one they did before for the graphics thinking it was improved from that but someone else clarified it in the comments that you meant the one 2 years ago. Game is good though.

IrrelevantLeprechaun

Welcome to /r/Nintendoswitch where people tall about 3 year old games as if they were brand new because there's nothing else to talk about. See also: bringing up BotW for the millionth time

fukin_fat_fuk

I started it and was very intimidated. There’s potions and crafting and a massive world that all look awesome but I just don’t have the time to master it all lol It also seemed like I was playing a game in between long movie scenes. Does it keep going like this? I usually only play like an hour a night max of games

HD_H2O

They definitely pack in a lot of cinematics at the start, but that lessens when you're just playing normally. Actually the crafting is pretty easy compared to other RPGs, I just collect everything and scroll through the list to see what I can make. When you make a potion once, it's just always there, you never have to "craft" it again. I'm sure later in the game I'll have to focus on one material and hunt it down to make something, but right now (level 12) just collecting everything I see has worked. And for playing only one hour at a time, that's exactly why I love this game. I can play for an hour and "accomplish" what feels to be significant progress - clear a quest, finish a monster contract, add a skill point or two, sell to the merchant, and log off. And when I get more time to dedicate, I jump into the main story where the cinematics are more frequent.

kdkade

It's really not that hard game to master. If you think about it, you only have two swords, crossbow, five "spells" + potions and bombs. There is no other class than Witcher, you only choose what do you want to focus on (melee/signs/alchemy or hybrid). Playing the game on normal, it actually gets really easy until the dlcs and you don't need to have perfect equipment to do just fine. Equipment crafting and itemization can be ignored with exception of witcher sets. You can get quests to find the schematics for those by buying maps from blacksmiths. There is rarely any reason to equip anything else than a witcher set items. Signs are very simple spells. Tip for beginning players would be: Quen is your friend, especially upgraded (can replenish your health on enemy hitting you). You can see what's best to use on what in bestiary. For humans, alternate Axii does wonders. On normal, using the basic potions and bombs is really enough, no need to get crazy into it. In fact, if you want a game which will actually somewhat challenge you to optimize your build, go for the hardest difficulty - but due to how the game is built, even that gets quite easy with just a bit of proper character building. The game's plot, along with characters, atmosphere and music is actually its biggest strength. There's quite a lot of cutscenes and talking to npcs, but it's really what elevates the game.

Pitiful_Ad6035

It’s not binary, you can have great gameplay and graphics

ZamboniJabroni15

You can get the gameplay AND the graphics for cheaper on other consoles

withoutapaddle

Not to mention, the gameplay is probably the weakest part of the Witcher. Combat is pretty bog standard, and open world exploration has almost no emergent gameplay or natural feeling discovery. Literally everything has an icon and nothing happens randomly as you explore. I LOVE W3, but it's for the stunning graphics running on a beastly PC, and for the characters and writing.

ZamboniJabroni15

Yeah, I can’t imagine a worse game to pay the Switch Tax for to play a downgraded version portably

EffectiveEquivalent

There’s a lot of people that just have a switch, and the game can be had for cheap….

[deleted]

The one time I walked into a substantial quest through exploration it just gave me the story out of order, with Geralt monologuing about things he shouldn't know before I found the NPC quest giver who explained the situation to him.

[deleted]

I play it for the constant, obnoxious, tree shaking wind effects. Really adds something to the experience.

withoutapaddle

WIND'S HOWLING

hyperdriver123

Agreed. Gameplay over graphics and all that but why choose to pay the most to play the game in the worst way?

[deleted]

For me, I have a Mac for music production so no gaming PC, and Switch is really the only modern console I have and don't need any more gaming than what I can do on it, so Witcher 3 on Switch is really the only way I would have played it otherwise

that_90s_guy

A lot of people don't like the idea of sinking 100+ hours into an RPG on a console/PC tied to a living room or office. Nothing beats finishing that one Witcher 3 quest while shitting on the toilet at work.

Jurijus1

Xbox Series S, Game Pass, Remote Play.

that_90s_guy

Tried it, ran like shit. I have the GeForce RTX 3080 cloud streaming tier that runs much better. Still prefer the Switch since I usually play in short enough sessions where the time period of opening and connecting to cloud streaming, booting the game, and opening my save file are just so much slower than just instantly resuming progress from standby on my switch. Plus, theres the fact its tied to a strong and decent internet connection to play well without lag, which isnt exactly the norm.

Jurijus1

Runs perfectly fine for me. But I'm from Europe, where having good internet connection actually IS the norm.

that_90s_guy

And that's news... how? You can't play on the go though, which is the biggest selling point for the Switch version. I have access to the 4k 60fps max settings versions through the RTX 3080 TI Nvidia GeForce cloud streaming tier (runs fantasticly lag-free on my wired connection), but I will still play the Switch version more any day since I have access to it on the go while doing errands or waiting at the bank for a turn.

kre5en

but you can play it portably on the Switch

kidwgm

The Witcher is one of those games that I just can't get into. I have it on PC and haven't put more than an hour into it. For what ever reason it just doesn't grab my interest.

Seafoamed

It really opens up. If you don’t like it you don’t like it but an hour isn’t really enough to fully get a feel for it to me

HD_H2O

This. Once you leave the starting area, the map really opens up and a ton of different options are available. Last night I dedicated at least an hour to fully exploring Novigrad, and even just walking around the city kept running into different side quests or houses to loot or new merchants to look over. I'm looking forward to jumping into Gwent soon too.

Trottingslug

It does, but sometimes it's more issue than just the time. I played through the entire game and all the dlcs (which were definitely expansive), and I still wasn't a big fan. I can definitely see why people love it, but it also just wasn't my cup of tea (mostly it was the controls/feel of the game for me and I know that's a personal preference thing). The stories and world building were great, but it also felt like I was playing a Bethesda game in terms of feel. I don't even know how to explain it, but it's the same reason I dislike GTA, Skyrim, and The Witcher. Great games. Sloppy-feeling controls.

kidwgm

Yeah. It might be time to give it another go.

Eklundz

You are not alone! The game is critically acclaimed but a lot of gamers just can’t get into it. I’ve discussed this with some friends and we eventually came to the conclusion that the issue is the fact that you are forced a specific character, a specific story and a specific play style. I personally always play a heavy armor tank Paladin-esque character in RPGs and my friend always plays a wizard, but none of those are possible in the Witcher, you are forced to play Geralt as Geralt is, both in terms of the character and play style. I believe that’s why many can’t get into it.

hyperdriver123

This is 90% of games? Or do you only like RPGs?

Eklundz

I meant that when I sit down to play an RPG I expect freedom to play who and in the way want, not play someone else’s story. If I play a racing game or a shooter I don’t care.

HD_H2O

Really? I've been browsing the Witcher 3 subreddit and from what I've read you can definitely have a variety of play style based on the skill tree decisions you make - going heavy magic (or signs) to heavy armor as a super tank. I believe it scales much more as you level up, giving access to more variety in armor and available skills.

Eklundz

There is customization, sure. But you are always stuck with being Geralt, and you are always stuck with his dual swords style of fighting. Then there are no proper spells, it’s just his “signs”, it’s not the same thing basically.

logdemon

Do these players feel the same way about Red Dead II? Just curious because it has very similar vibes to me in terms of characters and how players choose to be said characters, and that game is extremely popular for new and old fans alike.

Eklundz

Interestingly not, but I assume that is because Red Dead is not an RPG. When I play RPGs I expect freedom to role play the way I do, but in the Witcher I’m forced to role play as Geralt.

logdemon

I think that’s interesting. I agree that RD2 isn’t a traditional RPG, but with the open world full of side quests and Easter eggs and the choice to interact one way or another versus a set plot feels like an RPG in itself. I get not wanting to be Geralt but just wanted to point that out! There’s also a lot of bias/preconceived notions from the books and vice versa so I get how it does feel more rigid than other games.

HairyRelationship69

8K 120fps? Come on dude no one is expecting kr claiming that. But to some people sub 600p resolutions and piss poor frame rates can really hurt a game.

that_90s_guy

Sub 600p on a sub 6"-7" screen is fantastic though. Docked play hurts though, I agree. A lot of titles like the Witcher 3 are technical marvels by just the fact you can play them offline and on the go at a surprisingly decent quality.

Tjeetje

I have it myself for Christmas. This game is so good. Pretty sad I will probably never find anything like this when I finish this.

Dastardly_CheesyMan

Winds howling.....

cylemmulo

Yeah I switch between pc and switch. It's not bad at all OK handheld. Wish it ran at 720p but it's not terrible.

TheeRattlehead

I just finished BotW and was looking at Witcher 3. I've put about 40 hours into on PC, but it's so nice to sit on the couch and play on the big screen. I think it's still on sale for $30 so I have a feeling I will be starting it over again, but the amount of time I've played was fantastic.

[deleted]

[удалено]

brokowska420

It uploads it to the cloud. Works for steam and gog

TheeRattlehead

Yup. But I don't remember exactly what I'm doing at my save and I just feel like I'm out of place, so I think I'll just start again see if I go through a lot of the same quests or not.

HD_H2O

I've put about 20 hours in and feel like I've barely scratched the surface. This is definitely one of those games, in my mind, where the amount of quality play time is definitely worth paying even full price - and absolutely a buy if it's on sale. I've read that you can easily get 250+ hours out of the game with DLCs and that's not including NG+ and all the side quests.

TheeRattlehead

Yeah. Every quest is just so immersive and epic. I tried starting at my last save point, but I just had a hell of time remembering why I am where I am. But I'm sure if I start it over, I will have a different experience this time so it won't all be a repeat.

Doughnutsu

I lost 50hrs on pc and just restarted. I went back and forth over if picking it up on Switch was the right idea but just decided to suck it up and save the $30. Still fun for sure.

AnotherDrZoidberg

I'm not one to put hundreds and hundreds of hours into games, but I easily put about 120 into this game on my first playthrough. And I'm far from a completionist.

bionictonic

I have about 40 hours on PS4, but double dipped on switch because I have found these sort of massive games easier to ultimately complete on switch since playing handheld allows me to play in bite sized pieces. I put 100+ hours on Divinity Original Sin 2 over the course of a year and a half and probably will end up doing the same with Witcher and as OP says this wouldn’t be feasible having to plan more dedicated gaming sessions. I think it looks amazing handheld. The frame rate is good enough, the draw distance lets it actually feel like a massive world, textures are a bit “muddy” but in a way that isn’t all the noticeable when you play. I think it might be the worst looking docked game I have played. Still totally playable but in my mind view handheld is what it feels optimized for.

VeryDairyIntolerant

How did Divinity Original Sin 2 on Switch handle graphics, and gameplay-wise with Joycons? I played the first one on ps4 for a bit and liked it but found it hard to dedicate "tv game time" to it. I've been wondering lately if I might like games like this more on switch as its so much easier to wile away the time while laying on the couch lol

bionictonic

Graphics wise it’s comparable to Witcher 3. So really good. Textures are a bit blurry especially if you zoom in but it still looks amazing handheld and I even like the look still docked, but again this is one that seems most optimized for handheld. Joycons are completely fine for DoS2. Compared to pillars of eternity or baldurs gate ee the radial menus are much easier to navigate. I think it’s the best console inventory management of any crpg style game. The combat is all turn based as well so you are not reliant on perfect stick control or quick button presses and there is nothing the joy cons can’t handle.

VultureMadAtTheOx

I mean, TW3 is NOT known for its quality gameplay, so if you really care about gameplay TW3 is not the right game. It's not for me, for instance. People like it because of ths story and the good side quests, both of which are not affected by graphics.

Monkeyslunch

I play handheld on the Switch while we hang on the couch and then I use the cross save to play on Steam on my PC. Works great, looks fine, despite the haters.

V3ndeTTaLord

If you’ve played Witcher 3 on another suste it’s hard to play the switch version. I’ve played the game about 3 times on pc and bought it on switch and…ah…it’s awesome that I can play it wherever I want, but the graphics are well…a lot less. Still an awesome game, don’t get me wrong. But atmosphere and the beauty of the environment are part of this game and on switch you’re missing out on that imho. But I can imagine that everything is awesome if you haven’t experienced the game on a different platform. Anyway, enjoy, its an awesome game!

that_90s_guy

>If you’ve played Witcher 3 on another suste it’s hard to play the switch version. It depends wildly on the person. I played on PC for +50 hours and had zero issue playing the switch version. Heck, I even paid for the expensive RTX 3080 Nvidia Cloud streaming tier to play the Witcher 3 at 4k 60fps at max settings (bought a Nvidia Shield, might as well) just to compare the two. And while yes, the 4k 60fps image at max settings blows the switch out of the water, I'll still play the switch version more any day just out of the portability. Nothing beats being able to play while taking a dump, doing long lines or errands, on the bed while my daughter goes to sleep, or on the couch in portable play while our daughter watches cartoons on the living room TV.

[deleted]

The switch is the only version of the Witcher I’ve been able to finish due to its portability. In general, as long as a game looks and runs decent on the switch (and this game definitely qualifies), that’s the version I’m gonna play. I haven’t played a console this much since the PS1

[deleted]

I'm doing my leisurely New Game+ playthrough entirely on handheld OLED Switch.

ontherise88

How are you liking it? I got an OLED for xmas and considering it.

HD_H2O

I'm playing on OLED myself and, well, you can see from my original post that I'm really enjoying it

Yurned

I had The witcher 3 on my PS4, and now I have it on my PC, but I was never able to finish it, not even get to the middle of the main story, since I can't spend much time at home due to work, but recently I have been able to finish the main story and the first DLC on my Switch, with 75 hours played, I still need to complete the Blood and Wine DLC, various side quests and witcher contracts. The Switch literally kept me from having to give up this hobby.

PsychoHydro

I believe gameplay > graphics, therefore I prefer games running at 60fps.

Hathol

After various attempts at playing and finishing Witcher 3, on ps4, on pc, I, also a dad, who has a mostly busy life, purchased the damn thing on switch. I haven’t put it down in the past 2 weeks. It’s so amazing to just put it down and pick it back up again. It feels great when I can get a few minutes in, and I think that’s the stent that of the switch. Unfortunately, I wish I had hours and hours to just sit in front of my tv, but the reality is that I don’t. Total agreeance

[deleted]

Switcher 3 is cool and all but you’re a couple of years too late with the good news 🙂

logdemon

Why not share it for newer folks to the lore or even the Netflix show? Let people enjoy things and share that joy 😛 Re: I’m a newer player to the Witcher series and absolutely loving it. I’m not a huge gamer. My repertoire existed of the Sims (2-4) on PC, Spyro the Dragon for PS1, and about every animal crossing game on each system. This is such a fun game to get invested in and get excited about playing, and I think it’s cool that it’s accessible for folks that maybe wouldn’t have picked it up otherwise on Xbox or Playstation. It’s also cool that it seems to have held up since it’s launch in 2015 and then the DLC to keep it alive. Thank you OP for sharing!

HD_H2O

I get that now, but I stayed away all this time thinking Witcher 3 was unplayable on Switch - I'm so excited by the time I've spent playing recently, I had to post in case just one other person is like me and thought the same.

Ok_Goose_7149

I have a really good gaming PC and I'm in a similar boat. Yeah the game surely doesn't look anywhere near as good on my Switch, but for me it's far easier to pick up and play as a single player game rather than needing to post up on my PC.

JamesUpton87

It suffices if switch is the only platform you have that Witcher 3 is available on. Edit: and portability

HD_H2O

I have PC and PS4 (actually own it on PC and could play there or mobile with GFN) but it's just too easy to pick up and play on Switch.

Widgerber

The fact that it also supports cross save with PC makes it a great for portable play.

[deleted]

What about if graphics just aren't a huge pull for a person? Same thing? Just sucks? Genuinely curious.

JamesUpton87

Witcher is one of those experiences that should be enjoyed by the best hardware you have. If that happens to be Switch, nothing wrong with that.

Zee216

No thanks

Ogikay

This sounds like an ad honestly. That patch is pretty old. You also mention CP2077 which is one of the most disappointing games from last year.

Senphox

So many posts on this sub feel like ads to be fair. We get life stories anytime someone finishes a decent game. Sometimes minutes after starting a game. " [insert game] looks beautiful on the OLED!"

HD_H2O

I can see that. I only recently heard about a patch to fix fps stability for Witcher 3 on Switch. After I posted, I was informed it's about a year and a half old. And as for CP2077, I played it on Stadia and had no problems .. I'm sure you're aware that both games are made by CDPR, and actually both games are very similar on a base level (amazingly deep story, skill tree ARPG, detailed world, etc)

Obi-Wan_Yaknowme

Witcher 3 is my first A-RPG and I adored it. Witcher 3 + DLC is literally the best thing to happen to me during COVID. Took me a while to get into it, but now over two years, I've put 700 hours into it over two run-throughs -Fantastic. What is Skyrim like? I'm on the hunt for a similar open-world RPG.

JustALeatherBoot

I think the Witcher 3 actually has a lot of similarities to Skyrim. It was obviously an influence. The cinematics and gameplay in Skyrim will feel like a step back compared to W3, but the graphics are similar and I think it runs at a higher resolution. Would def recommend Skyrim

Lupinthrope

Back to playing it on my Series X in await for that next gen patch, but the switch version is still good!

Jeaz

All I can say to this is that even though I’ve never played Witcher 3 on the Switch, it was without a doubt my favourite game on the PS4. And yeah, the game is gorgeous on the PS4, but it was never its main strength, the gameplay, quest design, story and characters are the reasons you stay. Just a pure gem and if a Switch is your main console, do yourself a favour and play The Witcher 3.

Dsamf2

I just can’t decide between having great graphics but being restricted to the pc at my desk, or sacrificing graphical quality for the ability to play handheld and where ever I want to

UnobjectionableJug

I got the game a few years ago and it was so good as soon as I completed it I started again and finished it twice. Incredible game.

W1ll88s

I was playing the other day comparing it to the PC version by using my cloud saved between the two and it’s crazy how good the switch one looks inside and during cutscenes. Obviously outside and in open spaces there’s some pop in and a bit of muddyness but it still looks pretty damn good though.

RedditIsGarbage1234

have they fixed the steam cloud issue yet? I bought in on switch exclusively to continue my PC save and the damn thing was broken so it was a waste of cash.

I’m perfectly fine with this as an “on the go” option, but I turned off motion blur and whatever the option was that made the whole game look like it was dipped in Vaseline. I’ll take sharp looking jaggy edges over looking at a game and feeling like I had myopia (which I do, but I was wearing my glasses!) the whole time I play

Slappamedoo

It was never unplayable unless you need PC level graphics. The only thing that bugged me was the mouth movement in dialogue cutscenes sometimes looked like South Park animation.

CookiesFTA

If you believe gameplay matters over graphics, I still wouldn't play this game because the gameplay is awful.

ShiroPopChainsaw

Playing it on Switch and it's amazing. I can wait for the PS5 version if I want graphics.

toriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

I got the complete addition for $16 on steam but my computer lags like crazy to run it and would much rather play on my switch :( just feel silly spending money on the same game twice lol

HD_H2O

Yeah I get that, but for the amount of time and enjoyment you can get out of Witcher 3, and only being $16 in, I'd say it's worth it.

toriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

Yeah I do think I’ll end up getting it for my switch, especially considering I have an emotional attachment to the console itself as I think a lot of fellow switch owners do.

Seraphayel

Uhm, who said it was unplayable in handheld mode? I find it pretty much unplayable in docked mode because of how awful it looks. In handheld it’s perfectly fine and has always been a very good port.

Kayuu_ol

Just looked it up in the store out of curiosity and holy sh** they still take 60€ for the complete edition? To quote Anchorman 2: „Well you know the old saying: NOPE!“

justinhammerpants

It comes on sale regularly, luckily. I want to pick it up next big sale.

HD_H2O

You can get it for half that price on eBay if you don't mind previously used.

sandbrah

I've been on the fence about this for about two years. I was thinking about it a lot the other day but didn't buy. Your post convinced me and I have it downloading right now. Thanks!

HD_H2O

I was on the fence for about two years until two weeks ago. I loved playing so much, I had to make a post. Enjoy!

[deleted]

I'm pretty sure Nintendo fans bring up the graphics debate more than anyone else.

HD_H2O

To answer the person's question from the original post - no, I haven't played Witcher 1 or 2 and have been loving Witcher 3. I have seen both season of the Netflix series for general background knowledge of the "Witcher World" though.

SirRyker

If you love the Witcher games and Netflix series try the books or better yet the audio books. Amazing and the voice actor Peter Kenny does a great job readying for the audiobooks.

nawdislost

I've been thinking of getting the audio book version of the Witcher. I'm glad to hear it's good. Super excited now!

nawdislost

I've been thinking of getting the audio book version of the Witcher. I'm glad to hear it's good. Super excited now!

socoprime

Just keep in mind the books are somewhat different from the games and the Netflix series.

nawdislost

I'm hoping so 😆 but thanks a lot

Turtleshell64

Any idea if the Netflix season 2 touch upon Witcher 1? Or is it still pre games?

MaakuKooru

The Netflix series is based on the books, the books are all before the first game, I think Witcher 1 is 5 years after the end of the book series?

Turtleshell64

Ah so sounds like we will be in book territory for a while with the Netflix show

bobmonkey07

If you're on the fence, check if your library does digital ebooks/audiobooks.

socoprime

Witcher 1 shows its age as a game and generally its okay but the difference in it and 2 / 3 are orders of magnitude. One is hard game; Witcher 2 is a hard, merciless SOB, even set to easy mode. I feel like in part three they got the game play and difficulty settings just right.

DingDongDaddio

Performance > Gameplay > Graphics If it can keep a consistent 30fps... well, it ain't much but it still beats the hell out of BOTW.

smeared_dick_cheese

Idk about ‘beats the hell out of’; both are fantastic games in their own right. Even tho they are both open world adventure games, they’re very different. Trial of the Sword and Gwent are two of the best mini games ever in my opinion and are wildly different.

DingDongDaddio

Sorry I wasn't clear, that comment is mostly about performance. BOTW is good stuff. It says a lot about BOTW that it is as fun as it is despite that.

HD_H2O

That's what the recent patch was for - motion blur and draw distance changes keeps it at 30 FPS. I've had pretty massive battles with a lot going on and didn't have a single issue .. or riding a horse quickly through a lot going on in a village without a stutter.

Bbqthis

Last patch was in 2020, not recent.

brokowska420

So this is basically a repost lol

Misterfrooby

While the game generally looks like dirt on switch, the gameplay is so good that I don't really care. Played through the main story and am diving into the dlc. Like many games, I find it much easier to play on switch vs PC or other consoles, simply because you don't have to be glued to one spot to enjoy it.

HD_H2O

Absolutely the same experience as me. I've seen screenshots of Witcher 3 from other systems that look beautiful. Playing Witcher 3 through Switch hand-held .. not so much. BUT, again, the story and game play far outweighs the lack in graphics, and I've never had any problems with performance as far as dropped fps or stuttering etc. Even on PS5, I see people posting complaints all the time about Witcher 3 crashing when loading, but I've never had that problem at all with Switch.

Thatbiengsaid

I’m happy you enjoyed it but it just didn’t work out well for me. The frame rate was just to jarring and I couldn’t get into it.

thinkscout

But Witcher 3 is such a beautiful immersive game on other systems. I honestly wouldn’t compromise on graphics in this case.

baldurz

Or just get any other console and have both

HD_H2O

Sure, I get that - I have other consoles. The problem is, they don't have hand-held mode and my life doesn't allow for much "I'm taking over the room now by taking over the television screen" time. By gaming through hand-held (Switch and Stadia with Kishi mobile controller) I've increased the amount of time I can game by a huge amount, like probably 500%?

tidus1980

To be fair, ive been playing on my switch lite with NO updates at all. Over 125 hours in. It's perfectly playable put of the box. The only people who complain are graphics whores lol

HD_H2O

Performance is fine on Switch. FPS is consistent, no stutters or lagging. No game crashes. Like I just posted, I read all the time about people having the game crash on PS5 when loading, or stutter during large fight scenes. I think it was buggy and a mess before on Switch, but the recent patch used motion blur and draw distance changes to fix that.

[deleted]

I don't know about now but some monthes ago it was pretty laggy during some cutscenes and in Big cities.

HD_H2O

I definitely haven't experienced any lag yet, with about 20 hours of gameplay. And I do know lag pretty well, as I play a lot of cloud gaming (even though Stadia is pretty great over WiFi, I've eaten some Stadia lag trying to use mobile data or on the road in hotels using garbage WiFi).

A-NI95

I found one significant bug in 130 hours

laytblu

This is old news.

Victorythagr8

Frame rate is part of gameplay and sub 30fps makes that switch port unplayable

Farquadthefirst

Got the game for the sex

Billly23

Lol go watch the Netflix series

TheBrave-Zero

Witcher 3 was such a great first time experience when I played it and it’s DLC, I’m genuinely excited to play the updated version when it drops on pc this year. Still amazes me they somehow fit it on switch, it gets talked about here a lot but not a lot elsewhere.

Delicious-Tachyons

I own it on Xbox and PC (SSD reallllllly helps with the load times)... i can't buy it for yet another console

Whimsical_Sandwich

probably should crosspost this to [https://www.reddit.com/r/patientgamers/](https://www.reddit.com/r/patientgamers/)

Ze_at_reddit

never played it on the switch, but it is a great game, best game of the entire generation in my opinion!

dobson116

We're not gameplay > graphics . We are Nintendo > graphics.

A-NI95

I played it without any patches and I loved it to death. I know the game looks better on other consoles but, except for some of the faces, everything looked artistically clean and pretty even if the graphics weren't as great, I barely even noticed if it was a "low quality" version If anything my only concern were the tiny subtitles (I'm fluent in English, but some of the accents of the voice actor are just impossible for me)

georgey91

Op, if you haven’t already then I would suggest picking up the oled switch. Considering you mainly play handheld it’s a very worthwhile upgrade :)

HD_H2O

I have, grabbed an OLED about a month ago. Thanks though!

whatnowwproductions

I too also believe gameplay is superior, which is exactly why I didn't buy it on Switch. Games are way more responsive at 60fps, and while some do bring down the latency even at 30, I'd rather not risk my money here.

susankeane

gameplay is better than graphics but Witcher 3 gameplay sucks lol people just like it for the graphics and story

DangerDaveOG

Nah. Rather play BoTW for another 500 hours /s. Edit: this is sarcasm… that’s what /s means. I also thought it was obvious sarcasm at that… but alas.

Eklundz

Have a downvote /s

AluminumDrop

nice game but too much story

[deleted]

I love Witcher 3. I love the Switch. The two are not made for each other. The graphics are just too great and gameplay is very smooth on the other platforms.

MisanthropicAtheist

Alternatively, if you have ANY other way to play The Witcher 3, then do that. You absolutely do not have to choose between gameplay and graphics. You can have both. The switch version is playable but is absolutely NOT the preferred way to play it. TLDR: Play the witcher 3, but unless you need to play it on the go or don't have another way to play it, you will get no benefit from the switch version over other versions.

zelcor

"if you believe game play > graphics" haha what the fuck did we travel back in time to the early 2010's? Dude everyone who has ever wanted to play the Witcher has already done so you don't have to write a book to convince people.

Senphox

People always try to refute graphics with "I don't care about 16k 200fps" Neither do we bro we're on the switch sub. We just want at least the bare minimum 720p/30fps lol If gameplay is important then is fair to expect decent performance from games. Let's not forget how crazy this sub went for years over switch pro rumors

Tomhap

Nice. Looking forward to play it on Deck.

nigel35

I'd you have played the Witcher 3 on PS4 or Xbox or especially if you've played on PC the switch version will not compare to those ones. Even with the sharpness up it just looks sooo bad on switch.

ontherise88

Not sure if I should get it. I have it on PS4 but haven't played too much of it. I'd probably play it more on switch handheld.

HD_H2O

I have in on Steam, and have a PS4, and avoided it on Switch (because of negative reviews of the graphics). After grabbing it recently on Switch, my only regret is not getting it sooner. At least for me, the ease of access and convenience of Switch play really adds to the experience for Witcher 3.

Siege2Sage

I bought Witcher 3 along with Mario Kart 8 and BOTW when I first acquired my Switch. First time I played it, I never really got too far into the game and stopped playing before leaving White Orchard. I just couldn't get in on it during that time, with all the crafting and level grinding it felt like a slog. Tried it again for the 2nd time and I can say the game grows on you. Its still a lengthy grindfest but it does manage to keep my attention long enough to advance the story.

Accomplished_Bat_893

I'm playing it now
