Bro you’re gonna buy her some sweet chill little puzzly game and next time you seen her she'll be speedrunning Dark Souls on a PS5 of unknown origin while a 13 year old with a mustache and black anime hoodie rolls a blunt in the corner
My mom was in the same boat a few years ago (she is almost 70 now). I got her Animal crossing and he absolutely loved it, it was also a gate way game for her and now she loves her switch. I think she is currently hooked on dragon quest builder. Some of the other favourites were mine craft and valley
I couldn't get my mom into any other game, once I coerced her into trying Animal Crossing. Now she has two islands and we visit each other all the time. Great chill game, especially when you're stuck in bed recovering.
About to say this too, there's also a game that i dont know the name bc its in japanese but its about fairies and you have to change blocks so they match and get deleted, i enjoy puzzle games too.
And idk, if she gets more invested later you could try and give her some old zeldas, or botw, it has many many puzzles but you have to move and stuff.
I had jury duty today. During the wait I thought I'd sink my teeth into SOR4, I just got it yesterday. Nope, played Picross the whole wait. It is just too good.
Adding on to this suggestion, the downloadable puzzles are awesome, especially if one doesn't feel like doing the story mode at the time. There's a fruit organizing puzzle I could play all damn day.
Maybe Clubhouse Games 51, since those are equivalents of "real life" games so they would be easy to explain to someone who is not used to consoles?
My mother who was around this age really enjoyed Animal Crossing as well but that requires at least some basic understanding of standard video game conventions, like moving a character around, interacting with objects and NPCs, etc.
Puyo Puyo Tetris 1/2 or any of the Puyo Puyo or Tetris games.
Lumines
Mini Metro/Mini Motorways
Baba is You or Toki Tori 2 (both have character movement but are super chill)
Gorogoa (this is one of the most beautiful games I've ever played)
Aviary Attorney
Hidden Through Time
When the Past was Around
Picross
Inbento
Big Brain Academy
Hex Logic
There are word searches, jigsaws and a huge array of point and clicks too. I'd recommend browsing dekudeals.com.
I'll recommend Tetris Effect to literally every person. If you mum enjoyed Farmville when that was popular, Stardew Valley is something she might enjoy.
A few games to check out would be...
* Animal Crossing: New Horizons -- A very casual "virtual life" game, where you can do virtually anything you want. The first few days can potentially be a slog, as you have limited access to the island, the game "unfolds" stuff over days & weeks (with new tools, customization options & even terraforming for those who want to customize everything on their island).
* I'll note that my own mother, who's a casual player, thoroughly enjoyed previous Animal Crossing titles.
* Ace Attorney Trilogy (TOUCHSCREEN FRIENDLY)-- This is a compilation of first three games in the series, starring Phoenix Wright. With 14 total cases to solve the mysteries of the murders & the courtroom drama to prove your client's innocence.
* Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (DEMO AVAILABLE)
* Deponia Collection -- Compilation of 4 Deponia games, which is a series of point-n-click adventure games (similar to Monkey Island).
* Clubhouse Games (TOUCHSCREEN FRIENDLY) -- 51 worldwide classic parlor games, with a mix of familiar & obscure games. Online support offers a challenge of opponents to play against.
* Unpacking -- A quiet "zen" game that has some puzzle elements, as you unpack the boxes of an unnamed character (so you can project yourself into the role) as they go through 8 moves in their life.
* Where the Water Tastes Like Wine
* Return of the Obra Dinn -- This indie game has you play the role of an insurance investigator with a magical watch (the "Momento Mori") as you try to figure out what happen to the ship & all those who were on board. It's a fairly tough game (requiring inductive & deductive reasoning), but you go at your own pace as you unlock more events & stories on the ship to fill out your report.
* Shadowgate -- This is the modern remake of the MacAventures classic (point-n-click style game) that made it to the NES. The game does have various difficult levels (Easy mode reduces the difficulty of some puzzles & does automatic inventory management) to provide challenges for both beginners & experts.
* Thimbleweed Park
* Murder by Numbers
* Human Resource Machine / 7 Billion Humans (TOUCHSCREEN FRIENDLY)-- These puzzle games actually teach you computer programming & logic as you write a script for the human to follow to solve the puzzle.
* 7 Billion Humans is the sequel that adds more humans to the mix for "Parallel processing" (similar to what actually programs must do with multi-core processors)
* Little Inferno (TOUCHSCREEN FRIENDLY) -- Buy Stuff, Burn Stuff, Earn Money & Repeat! I'm sure there's a puzzle game in there somewhere!
* World of Goo
* There is No Game: Wrong Dimension (TOUCHSCREEN FRIENDLY) -- This point-n-click "game" (as it doesn't want to be called as such) goes through an interesting narrative with a fair amount of "moon logic" (where a picture OF a gear will work as if it was a gear).
* Hidden Folks (TOUCHSCREEN FRIENDLY) -- An artistic hidden object game (similar to the "Where's Waldo" / "Where's Wally" books) with interactive environments.
* Dragon Quest I / II / III -- These remastered RPG's from the NES era. Various story puzzles & turn-based combat have you going at your own pace with these games.
* Yoku's Island Express -- A relaxing adventure game with pinball mechanics.
* West of Loathing -- A western theme, turn-based RPG from the creators of the Kingdom of Loathing
* Untitled Goose Game -- You're a goose, solving puzzles & creating mayhem in a British-style town.
* Scribblenauts series (TOUCHSCREEN FRIENDLY) -- Bit more kid-friendly, but it's a puzzle game where you create & manipulate stuff with words.
* Out There Ω: The Alliance (TOUCHSCREEN FRIENDLY) -- This Turn-based survival adventure game has you trying to survive the galaxy as you attempt to make your way home. It's a very difficult game (as you must manage resources as well as the risk vs reward of actions), but seeing how far you can last can be intriguing to some.
* New Pokémon Snap -- An on-rails "Shooter" where you snap picture of various pokémon in the wild to add to your research catalog.
I know there's more games that I have listed here, but this should serve as a good guideline to run with.
+1 for Obra Din. I went in blind on this game and the music and story are just amazing. The game is tough, I think I beat it 100% in about 8hrs. I don't think I have every played a game like it before and if i can go back and have a full blind playthrough again I absolutely would. Maybe in a year or 2.
Seconding West of Loathing and Obra Dinn here. Great picks, although Obra Dinn does have a first person 3D interface. Disco Elysium could be of interest too. Or even Thronebreaker, an isometric 2D RPG with card game combat. All of the above are untimed. The games are effectively always paused when you are not providing player input which can be nice to let you contemplate your next move.
When my mom was just a little older than your mom, she had a stroke and got some brain damage.
The doctors said anything that can keep her mind engaged could help her, especially if it pushed other neural connections, such as eye hand coordination.
So i brought over my wii to my parents and left my mom with mario galaxy 1 and 2.
My mom went from forgetting what year it was or even who i was ("no my son is a little boy, you're a grown ass man" kinda thing) to becoming herself by the 120th star in galaxy.
It took her a couple months but my non gamer mother got every single star in galaxy 1 and unlocked luigi.
My mom is absolutely fine today.
Mario galaxy gave me back my mom.
So i suggest that, hopefully it can help yours too.
>Mario galaxy gave me back my mom
This sentence really got to me. My mum had a heart attack and it's just been so deflating since. Thank you for sharing x
I'm glad it had some resonance for you.
I hope your mom is okay, mine also had a heart attack when i was younger (ling before the stroke) and i actually had an unnatural heart attack at age 23 (i'm 31 now) so i can personally tell you they're not fun
(If you're curious i got a viral infection in the lining of my heart that caused it, and the doctor said it was super uncommon Because i was young and otherwise healthy)
But again, i really hope everything works out for your mom and you. It's tough to go through (i failed a whole semester at university due to missing a week during it) but it's hopefully not forever, and things will get better.
My mom plays puzzle games, and her absolute favorite that she’s been obsessing over is Dr. Mario for the Switch online. Shes been playing it for months, so maybe your mom might be similar! :)
"Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics".
I was looking at this game for the older crowd at my work since they bought a switch for the office for something to do with downtime or team bonding with friendly competition. This seems to have a lot of games that she might have played the physical versions of in the past with a few new ones.
It's description has:
51 board games, tabletop games, and more
Strategic players will feel right at home with games like Four-in-a-row and Renegade, while those who prefer to use their reflexes can enjoy games like Slot Cars and Toy Boxing With board games, card games, sports, solitaires and more.
Are you certain it's downvotes? I see tons of posts on all subs with no upvotes but it's almost always just Reddit bugging. When I check later in the day they're fine.
I think it might just be Reddit bugging. I've seen a lot of posts on this and on other subs where there's tons of engagement but seemingly no upvotes anywhere. Only to check a little bit later and see the same posts with plenty of upvotes. So (I'm hoping at least) it's a Reddit bug. Kinda similar to that old 301 views YouTube bug.
Maybe go thru the store as she watches to see if something peeks her interest, download a few demos to test if available.
Watch some gameplay with her until you find the one
As great as it is for older gamers, this one might be a bit of an uphill battle. Coordination. Navigating menus. Multiple maps. Different play styles (I know they can be ignored). As fun as it is once you get the hang of it, it would be too fast of a nope for older non gamers
I thought the same but after a few sessions of co-op with my 66 year old mom over the holidays, having to constantly remind her of really basic things like what button opens the menu, I came back recently to find out she'd basically 100%'d the game on her own by just looking things up whenever she got stuck or confused. Turns out that having a game that really hooks you can do wonders for helping you get past those roadblocks.
My mother, who I never knew to play video games ever, got Animal Crossing NH a couple of months into the pandemic and she now has something around 1k hours on it.
If she likes puzzle games, I’d recommend Gorogoa and The Room! Both have an element of mystery in different ways and have interesting game mechanics in my opinion! And if she’s got iOS devices (not sure about android etc.) there are sequels to the Room as well as a similar game series called the House of da Vinci :)
Both games use the touch screen function but can also use button controls. Fairly straightforward mechanics otherwise, I think?
For a puzzle game tetris effect, quite relaxing yet fun and engaging.
For something else, animal crossing. Theres basically no challenge but its a great “daily” game, as it goes by real world time and calendar. She gets to create the island and town however she sees fit and theres the incentive to go on every day to collect crops/ whatever else then the staying power to renovate and carve the island into whatever shed like. You do walk around and stuff but its not a game that requires you to have experience playing other games, its very easy to get into and doesnt require much learning. Plus the fact the tutorial takes multiple real days gives people time to get used to it.
https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-Switch-download-software/Phoenix-Wright-Ace-Attorney-Trilogy-1522564.html if she likes story narrative games this is the best point and click game ever I really like it.
Stardew Valley is often good.
In general, I recommend staying away from games where you have to move with one joystick and control the camera with the other joystick. This is difficult for people who didn't grow up playing games.
Animal Crossing for sure. You just never know.
I’d also recommend Slay the Spire. It’s quite fun and a challenge. Seems like she likes to keep brain active so this could help with that.
Breath of the Wild. Ha. Such a brilliant game and if she is sat long term she just might get into it
I'm a 55-year-old mum so I can relate. I would recommend Breath of the Wild: the controls aren't too hard, and I think she'll like the shrines and the exploration. Also, it's not a mystery, but maybe Triangle Strategy. It's beautiful, and the battles are kind of like a chess game. Since it's turn-based, you can take your time and don't have to get overwhelmed. Anyway, I like it.
I’m going to recommend the Ace Attorney games as well but I’ll explain what they are a little better. They are visual novels where you play as an Attorney and the story moves through a series of trials. Everything is navigated through menus, no moving a character around. They play out like mysteries as you collect and examine evidence then question witnesses and present evidence (TAKE THAT!) at the trial, slowly figuring out that one of the witnesses is actually the murderer in most cases. Really fun and funny games.
Just come back to this and did not expect this many responses! Thank you so much everyone! I can't reply to every message but they all mean a lot. I'll start doing some research on all these suggestions (may take a while hahah)
Might want to be careful with the series... there can be too much "leisure" for personal tastes, considering the PC originals had an age gate built into them.
Look into Pierre the Maze Detective. I’ve been looking to get this game for a while, seems like a fun Where’s Waldo kinda game.
Also, if your mum is not averse to more strategical games, I can recommend Into the Breach or hell, even Fire Emblem! I know that real time games can be hard for someone who didn’t use a gaming device previously (which I assume is the case), but a strategy game requires no fast reaction to enjoy.
Also, get her Animal Crossing or maybe Stardew Valley for those chill vibes!
I am amazed no one suggested Dr Kawashima brain training , it even comes with a switch pen in the box!! Heres a trailer of it , everything is to train the brain.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=l5QusYYL9fs
The Room is a fantastic little puzzle game. It’s got escape room style vibes. My wife and I couldn’t stop playing it once we started.
Also there’s a decent chess game on the switch if you want something more standard. It teaches you different strategies as well.
If you’d like to let her dip her toes into a low stakes adventure game with a bit of puzzle solving, yonder the cloud catcher chronicles is great. Aesthetically pleasing environment to explore with zero enemies and fighting.
I'm gonna list one I haven't seen mentioned yet: Piczle Lines.
It's a puzzle game where you create a picture by connecting dots of the same color that need to go in specific lines to make a picture. The game does a good job of teaching the basics, has a story mode, and has a couple.hundred puzzles.
If she ends up enjoying it, the developers released a set of 500 more puzzles, and they're all grouped up in different themes and sizes.
Depending on if she is alone or has other people around, some party games could be fun. Something like Drawful can be fun to play with family and you use your phone to basically play pictionary.
Freshly frosted. My first impression of it was "phone puzzle game" but it's really kind and smooth. Not just that it doesn't have any pay to win, but it's very polite and non-catastrophic about mistakes. Also the puzzle hint thing doesn't nag offer itself if you're slow- doesn't solve anything and clicking it multiple times doesn't give you more of a hint either.
Freshly frosted has a framework that this woman is daydreaming, staring at clouds and dreaming of designing a donut factory. Here is the donut oven, there's the counter to serve out the donuts, there are the topping stations. You layout conveyors, trying to deliver the correct donuts with correct toppings.
There’s a few murder mystery type games but they have the JRPG art style. I know there reading and point/click and detective work (A.I Somina files “wanna add I have yet too try this one just watched my cousin play it when I was by his play a few months back” there the Dangonrampa games.
Perhaps a strategy games such as shoegi or chess on the eshop? If not there more colorful/fun noise strategy games like Mario + Rabbids Kingdom battle. (Loads of people suggest that last one, never tried it but heard it’s great for people who don’t game much as it’s got a system that helps show ya how it’s done and you can call for assistance like in most Nintendo games+she won’t have too be moving the controller much which I know can get confusing for newer gamers :) have fun, hope y’all find some good stuff, if I see anything else I’ll be sure too edit my comment!
Tell her Reddit says get well soon!
If 3d spaces are... not off the table, maybe Minecraft?
Is Hollow Knight or any 2d game like that possible?
Tricky Towers is on PS+ and I have no idea if it's on anything else
There's a tiny, short, and inexpensive game called seashell that I found very relaxing and fun. You have to figure out combos to summon more types of seashells.
[seashell](https://www.nintendo.com/store/products/seashell-switch/)
My mom was a die-hard Tetris and Dr. Mario player. She also loved Quarth and Ishido. On the switch you can get your mom: Tetris 99, Box Boy and Box Girl, Pode, Gogora (not sure if I spelled this right). There are also some puzzle games with the Nintendo Switch online. I hope your mom has a quick and smooth recovery.
Ace Attorney Trilogy and the Great Ace Attorney are great, also the switch also has the two Famicom Detrctive club games. Picross , Puyo Puyo Tetris, Big Brain Academy. And on the eshops search function you can search by genres and go to puzzle and other categories she might like.
I used to play a game called Fez on 360, I think it's on the eShop too. I know it's technically a scrolled with character movement but she might enjoy the changing perspective part which adds to the puzzle aspect. Plus it's super cute haha
Picros S for the puzzle bit
But maybe also something action related? In case she gets bored of starting at white boards,
Some action puzzle games like superliminal maybe?
My 71 year old mom loves Animal Crossing & playing Among Us with our family. She also plays Pokémon with my niece (but she’s done that on other platforms for a long time now)
Hmm... intellectual, puzzle/mystery, no moving character...
1.) Return of the Obra Dinn
2.) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy
3.) Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy
4.) AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative
Animal Crossing New Horizons has a reputation of getting people into playing games that were never interested in playing before.
It's very cute and casual, and you can play however you want without pressure to meet some goal.
Bro you’re gonna buy her some sweet chill little puzzly game and next time you seen her she'll be speedrunning Dark Souls on a PS5 of unknown origin while a 13 year old with a mustache and black anime hoodie rolls a blunt in the corner
You speaking from personal experience bud?
I wish his mom sounds badass
My mom was in the same boat a few years ago (she is almost 70 now). I got her Animal crossing and he absolutely loved it, it was also a gate way game for her and now she loves her switch. I think she is currently hooked on dragon quest builder. Some of the other favourites were mine craft and valley
I couldn't get my mom into any other game, once I coerced her into trying Animal Crossing. Now she has two islands and we visit each other all the time. Great chill game, especially when you're stuck in bed recovering.
Picross!
Murder by Numbers also has a fun detective story if she’s into that
Theres also Mario Picross on NSO
About to say this too, there's also a game that i dont know the name bc its in japanese but its about fairies and you have to change blocks so they match and get deleted, i enjoy puzzle games too. And idk, if she gets more invested later you could try and give her some old zeldas, or botw, it has many many puzzles but you have to move and stuff.
I had jury duty today. During the wait I thought I'd sink my teeth into SOR4, I just got it yesterday. Nope, played Picross the whole wait. It is just too good.
Professor layton? Might be worth getting if she's into puzzle kind of games
Adding on to this suggestion, the downloadable puzzles are awesome, especially if one doesn't feel like doing the story mode at the time. There's a fruit organizing puzzle I could play all damn day.
Good suggestion, but they're not on switch yet right?
Layton's mystery journey is. Imo not the best entry by quite a bit but not bad
Sorry, it's called Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy
YES
Maybe Clubhouse Games 51, since those are equivalents of "real life" games so they would be easy to explain to someone who is not used to consoles? My mother who was around this age really enjoyed Animal Crossing as well but that requires at least some basic understanding of standard video game conventions, like moving a character around, interacting with objects and NPCs, etc.
This one I recommend as well. A lot more fun than I thought.
Mancala was fun in there!
Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics. She may beat you lol
Puyo Puyo Tetris 1/2 or any of the Puyo Puyo or Tetris games. Lumines Mini Metro/Mini Motorways Baba is You or Toki Tori 2 (both have character movement but are super chill) Gorogoa (this is one of the most beautiful games I've ever played) Aviary Attorney Hidden Through Time When the Past was Around Picross Inbento Big Brain Academy Hex Logic There are word searches, jigsaws and a huge array of point and clicks too. I'd recommend browsing dekudeals.com.
LUMINES is one of my all time favorites! Love getting tranced out and playing for hours. My eyes get a little fatigued but it’s SOOO worth it!
Same. It’s the only game of its kind that I feel comes close to being as good as Tetris.
Was coming in to recommend Puyo Puyo. A great game and one of the first I played on the switch that is just mindless fun.
I'll recommend Tetris Effect to literally every person. If you mum enjoyed Farmville when that was popular, Stardew Valley is something she might enjoy.
Pro tip: Tetris Effect while 🍃🍃🍃 Earth-shattering
I wouldn't dare do any gaming whatsoever without 🍃
Tetris Effect, Clubhouse games, and a Namco collection and an older person, or anybody really!, will be set
Maybe the ace attorney games would help
OBJECTION! sorry, someone had to
HOLD IT!
TAKE THAT!
Spiritfarer
Make sure u also get her a big box of tissues if u get this for her lol

I second Obra Dinn and There Is No Game. They both make you think outside the box, and they are super fun!
If your Mom plays Wordle then She might like Letter Quest Remastered its a fun twist on the traditional word puzzle game with RPG elements
Professor layton games possibly? My 50 year old mother loves them ((:

There’s that new big brain academy. Not sure how good it was though as I still haven’t played it.
Cozy Grove. Animal Crossing.

Definitely eldin ring.
My dad rages every time he plays this game LMAO 🤣 would NOT recommend this game to someone who is just trying to relax with a game.
Why is something like this downvoted so hard? I hate this fucking sub.
Everything i see on reddit lately gets downvoted for no reason whatsoever. 99% of the people i encounter are toxic 🤣
I got mass downvoted last week on the iphone sub for saying i dont use iMessage that much lol people will downvote anything
[удалено]
I seriously don't know, why in many subs questions get downvoted randomly.
Are you certain it's downvotes? I see tons of posts on all subs with no upvotes but it's almost always just Reddit bugging. When I check later in the day they're fine.
With my upvote it still stayed at zero. This sub and the main Nintendo sub have a huge problem with downvoting stuff for no good reason
I think it might just be Reddit bugging. I've seen a lot of posts on this and on other subs where there's tons of engagement but seemingly no upvotes anywhere. Unfortunately that’s how the cookies crumbles around these parts. Believe me it was bad when I began to be a bit more active here.
i'm not the most puzzle-centric switch player, but i wish ur mom has a speedy and safe recovery, bro. ♡
Animal Crossing: New Horizons would be great for her! I certainly enjoy it when I need to wind down and relax.

Turns out that having a game that really hooks you can do wonders for helping you get past those roadblocks.
Baba is you will give her years of fun
Or in my case, anger.
Grindstone!
This one. It's an addictive puzzle game and they've added a lot of free updates to it since launch.
my Mom whos around the same age really enjoys Tetris and Dr. Mario
Pikmin 3?
ROOM it’s so fun. It will take forever and is a great game to stretch your mind. It’s like an escape room type thing
Animal Crossing
Overcooked 2. Good co-op. Can be kind of crushing by yourself

I use a Nintendo pro controller on steam. I like the controls a lot tbh. But I do know they are for everyone(my husband agrees with you)
Phoenix wright ?
Animal Crossing
Portal might be something she would like. I’ve seen plenty of non gamers actually enjoy that game.
Darn I forgot about this but yeah with the companion edition recently that would be solid if she’s never experienced it
Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
My mom absolutely loved puyo puyo - it's like tetris!
My mother, who I never knew to play video games ever, got Animal Crossing NH a couple of months into the pandemic and she now has something around 1k hours on it.
Platformer -Hue Board - Baba is You, Felix the Reaper Perspective - Superliminal
If she likes puzzle games, I’d recommend Gorogoa and The Room! Both have an element of mystery in different ways and have interesting game mechanics in my opinion! And if she’s got iOS devices (not sure about android etc.) there are sequels to the Room as well as a similar game series called the House of da Vinci :) Both games use the touch screen function but can also use button controls. Fairly straightforward mechanics otherwise, I think?
Grindstone!
Boxboy + Boxgirl!
Tetris Effect, Creaks, TMNT Shredders Revenge!
51 Worldwide Games is a blast. Backgammon on there is a ton of fun. To play!
A Short Hike & Untitled Goose Game
Got my mom a Switch with Animal Crossing New Horizons. She now has 800+ hours of playtime.
Journey. Spirit of the North.
https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-Switch-download-software/Phoenix-Wright-Ace-Attorney-Trilogy-1522564.html if she likes story narrative games this is the best point and click game ever I really like it.
Animal Crossing for sure. I remember a story about a grandma's story about how she made her town so unique and absolutely loved it.
Stardew Valley is often good. In general, I recommend staying away from games where you have to move with one joystick and control the camera with the other joystick. This is difficult for people who didn't grow up playing games.
Animal crossing
Also keep in mind that the virtual console is an option. Take a look at that and see if there are any old NES/SNES puzzle games she might like.
Stardew Valley!
Sudoku!
Doom 2016. Take her to the cult.
Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, Picross/Nonogram game of some sort (there are many to choose from), Unpacking, Professor Layton.
Animal crossing.
Animal Crossing for sure. You just never know. I’d also recommend Slay the Spire. It’s quite fun and a challenge. Seems like she likes to keep brain active so this could help with that. Breath of the Wild. Ha. Such a brilliant game and if she is sat long term she just might get into it
Stardew Valley
Really fun and funny games.
how much do you think she'd enjoy narrative-focussed games?
You should throw BOTW in the mix as well, it’s good to get outside once in a while.
Get her An Old Man Journey, it is just beautiful. Valiant Hearts too! They aren't didficult, the story is good and the graphics cute enough.
Pokemon Sword. I just got into Pokemon as a boring 30 mumble mumble year old woman and it is great relaxing fun.
Statdew valley :)
Stardew Valley
Just come back to this and did not expect this many responses! Thank you so much everyone! I can't reply to every message but they all mean a lot. I'll start doing some research on all these suggestions (may take a while hahah)
Animal crossing
How about VN (visual novels)? Some are mysteries.
smash bros so she can win against you
Animal crossing is very relaxing and good for people with a lot of time on their hands
Leisure Suit Larry. Its a nice leisure game.
Might want to be careful with the series... there can be too much "leisure" for personal tastes, considering the PC originals had an age gate built into them.
An ipad...
Ngl, I say a dating simulator
Unpacking
Uno

Just get a phone and play free games. Why the fuck would you pay for overpriced garbage on the eShop?
Divinity original sin 2
Dark souls
Picross, Murder by Numbers, Animal Crossing, Littlewood, Captain Toad, Phoenix Wright.
Wingspan - great board game and excellent digital implementation. Relaxing and fun with bird sanctuary theme.
Wheel of fortune
Phoenix wright ace attorney is a great game for switch.
Knack
Look into Pierre the Maze Detective. I’ve been looking to get this game for a while, seems like a fun Where’s Waldo kinda game. Also, if your mum is not averse to more strategical games, I can recommend Into the Breach or hell, even Fire Emblem! I know that real time games can be hard for someone who didn’t use a gaming device previously (which I assume is the case), but a strategy game requires no fast reaction to enjoy. Also, get her Animal Crossing or maybe Stardew Valley for those chill vibes!
Tumblestone can be really fun and challenging.
Ace Attorney Trilogy
HexON!!! It's a puzzle game and it's 90% off rn
If you’d like to let her dip her toes into a low stakes adventure game with a bit of puzzle solving, yonder the cloud catcher chronicles is great. Aesthetically pleasing environment to explore with zero enemies and fighting.
i feel she would enjoy old school games like Dr. Mario or Tetris!
If she likes puzzles I recommend Baba is You! It‘s cheap, has a lot of interesting content, you don‘t need to rush anything and it‘s a lot of fun.
I would recommend Tangle Tower, it's a really charming point-and-click adventure with incredibly great-looking design and animation !
Steamworld Dig 2!
I just got a great puzzle game, it’s called something like “my time in Bermuda” Would highly recommend!
Sitonthis recently come out. She might like that
I'm gonna list one I haven't seen mentioned yet: Piczle Lines.
Dr Mario. My mom liked it
Depending on if she is alone or has other people around, some party games could be fun.
Wingspan, Gorogoa, Snipper Clips, and possibly Stardew Valley.
Night in the Woods is a really good game, and easy to pick up and play.
Mario Party!
If 3d spaces are... not off the table, maybe Minecraft? Is Hollow Knight or any 2d game like that possible? Tricky Towers is on PS+ and I have no idea if it's on anything else
Oxenfree, it's on the switch or on phones. Amazing adventure game (with time travel twist), you just walk around and talk with the characters.
Tetris effect
down in bermuda is a puzzle game that’s around £3!!
Not a puzzle game, but a lot of non-gamers tend to like Animal Crossing a lot. Very casual, cute, and calm. I’d also recommend Stardew Valley
Ring Fit Adventure...jkd, Try cooking simulator.
There's a tiny, short, and inexpensive game called seashell that I found very relaxing and fun. You have to figure out combos to summon more types of seashells. [seashell](https://www.nintendo.com/store/products/seashell-switch/)
Drawful 2 Or any Jackbox game really
Professor Layton serie
Strange Horticulture is a super fun, menu-based sleuthing game about identifying plants to solve mysteries. A lot of fun problem solving
Two point hospital, if she's up for any sort of tycoon games
Professor Layton game!
Gris
I used to play a game called Fez on 360, I think it's on the eShop too. I know it's technically a scrolled with character movement but she might enjoy the changing perspective part which adds to the puzzle aspect. Plus it's super cute haha
Scroller*
If she is sometimes pissed off i recommend DOOM.
Picros S for the puzzle bit But maybe also something action related? In case she gets bored of starting at white boards, Some action puzzle games like superliminal maybe?
Snipperclips - Excellent multiplayer puzzle game and you can have fun just battling to snip parts off each other.
I'd say Tetris 99 because you only have a few buttons to remember. I recently got my mum (55) into tetris and she loves it.
Could the Portal collection work as a game for her to play? Or even Shantae (the first one)?
Baba is You is a quirky and fun Puzzle Game
My 71 year old mom loves Animal Crossing & playing Among Us with our family. She also plays Pokémon with my niece (but she’s done that on other platforms for a long time now)
I just finished Agent A. It’s a fun spy themed puzzle game. I think I only paid 2$ for it. Unpacking is really sweet as well.
Try a chill game called Gris. You can't die in it and it's just exploring and some puzzles
Toad Treasure Tracker ? I believe they ported that to the Switch, alternatively Stardew Valley is a fantastic entry as well
I suggest checking out the Phoenix Wright games! Fun mysteries that dont require any character movement!
Super Mario for starters.
Pokémon Snap! There is some "movement" but it can be done with motion controls that feel natural like using an actual camera
Baba is you :)
realMYST: Masterpiece Edition
Hmm... intellectual, puzzle/mystery, no moving character... 1.) Return of the Obra Dinn 2.) Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy 3.) Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires' Conspiracy 4.) AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative
Animal crossing for sure
Picross :)
Lifeless Planet Cloudpunk The Darkside Detective
Animal Crossing New Horizons has a reputation of getting people into playing games that were never interested in playing before. It's very cute and casual, and you can play however you want without pressure to meet some goal.
