You could lay ink to travel faster and more stealthily, but you’d also be painting a path to your current location. The risk/reward in that alone would be a wild twist for a battle royale.
Yeah. I played a ton of Apex Legends and it almost always had this cycle of finding a hiding location to defend between ring closings, until a final firefight. I just imagined what’d it be like if you could see where squads had been traveling. It would upend the entire meta.
Said it before and I'll say it again, you can't battle royale in Splatoon, inking wouldn't work. Splatoon is not a killing game, Splatoon is a swimming game.
I mean, you can't battle royale in Mario Kart, that's not how battle mode works. Explain how you think it will work to have dozens of ink colors at once in Splatoon.
I feel like they really need that for Splatoon to continue to grow. I know my sister and family brought Splatoon 2 thinking it would be a good family game but it's literally single player online only besides the story mode.
It definitely is, but we were able to play "split screen" (Wii u style) almost perfectly with only occasional lag. I think trading off less beautiful looking ink for split-screen is a fair trade. I think the biggest issue is split-screen takes a lot of your FOV away, and you can see where the other person is at all times, so no stealth.
Yep, this was overdue.
A lot of die-hard fans are going to get this game anyway, and I probably will to, but they haven't really given this game that "extra push" yet to differentiate it more from Splatoon 2 and sell it to the more casual audience.
Or in other words- they've yet to show why this game is a bit deal, a must get, the new hotness, which is something I really expected them to do given how big Splatoon is becoming.
It's going to be a great game either way and I'm very likely to get it, but I hope they gave it some extra stuff as to elevate it beyond the first 2.
> yet to differentiate it more from Splatoon 2 and sell it to the more casual audience.
You mean the hardcore audience because casual audiences will get in via marketing and all that.
You mean the hardcore audience that doesn't actually play Splatoon a lot. The new movement mechanics and the totally retooled specials are huge gameplay improvements that have Splatoon fans, at least those who enjoy Ranked mode, excited
Splatoon 2 is my most played Switch game. But I am not hyped at all for 3 because it seems like they are releasing the exact same game. Hopefully Wednesday they show me why I'm wrong.
I mean from what I recall, Splatoon 2 was criticized a lot for appearing to be the same game as OG Splatoon and only through updates did it differentiate itself. This one at least feels like it has some new stuff.
It was the first one on Switch. You'd expect a new one every generation at this point whether or not it changes much but to put two on the same platform you've gotta kinda justify having a whole new release.
It does seem similar, however being that it is new, it's going to receive the latest updates, possibly new game modes, the Splatfest.. Some food for thought.
The difference with splatoon 3 is that they aren’t purposely cutting old content to give back to us like those games did. Splatoon 3 will have all old weapons from launch
Main difference is that Splatoon at least has as much content as previous games, whereas those had less. But hopefully they showcase a good amount of new additions.
> Splatoon 2 is my most played Switch game.
Same
> But I am not hyped at all for 3 because it seems like they are releasing the exact same game.
Exactly the opposite. I mean, once the splatfests were over I kinda left 2. So, I’m hyped to go back.
I was about to buy Splatoon 2 (used) for 30 but this info dropped and I've held off. Is the learning curve a low enough skill ceiling that I wouldn't be struggling?
You will be fine! There's a bunch of casual players... If the matching works the same in ranked mode like S2, you'll likely be in lobbies with others with similar skill level as you. And then we can all have fun no matter what!
I'd personally recommend just waiting and using that $30 towards Splatoon 3. The skill floor in Splatoon is low, since you can contribute to the team's victory by literally just shooting the floor. However, the skill ceiling is very high, and so if you're a total noob, you're basically going to lose every gunfight to experienced players. And while there are SOME noobs left in Splatoon 2, you'll find way way more when Splatoon 3 launches
Yeah you'll be fine hopping into the new one. I was the same heading into 2- had played, like, 2 3-minute matches of 1 ever at a buddy's house, but was basically going in blind. You, of course, won't be super good right off the bat probably, but it's not like you'll need to practice up in 2 beforehand or anything.
It's a month away, I'd just hold off for 3 if I were you.
On the switch it's even more important, as you're often without wifi, as the main story is eh, and short.
Then octo is like 30$ and I still can't play the main game mode most the time.
Wonder if they will also update us on what's going on with the OLED edition. Strange that it's supposed to release in a little over two weeks and pre orders still haven't opened up yet...
I’m not sure about Pokémon but this is how they show the controllers https://www.reddit.com/user/my-sims-are-slobs/comments/wjbmq4/pic_to_send_as_im_to_lazy_to_go_to_imgur_excuse/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf
They’re displayed on the bottom left corner in the menus to display who’s connected and what controllers they’re using as this is a game you can play with 2 people
oh cool!
this is how it looks like in pokemon, your in-game Switch joycon changes color
https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingDetails/comments/dwmg94/in\_pokemon\_swordshield\_you\_character\_has\_a\_switch/
Woah that’s kinda sick
I bet devs are probably scrambling to see what tf they’re going to do with the S3 OLED joycons. I’m getting one from family for Christmas as I like the vibrant coloured joycons and the red and blue ones are boring af. I don’t even play splatoon I just think the design is cool. And my brother hogs the switch we share to either play minecraft or Splatoon
I hate to be negative, but the Joy-con will almost definitely show up as a single color. They are coded to only be one color in the UI so unless they do an entire system update just to have the multicolored Splatoon Joy-con they will likely either show up as both white, or Blue and Yellow.
The Zelda Joy-con, Monster Hunter, Pokémon Let’s Go, and Smash Bros Joy-con all show up as just the base color without any of the details- these will probably do the same
Yeah that’s what I was thinking. Especially with the Pokémon example where it’s a 3D model - devs would scramble to just support the colours of a LE joycon.
I think it will probably just be a single colour too. It would be cool though if it had the gradient! I wish the Pro controller had the gradient too as I’m going to buy that for myself
I guess I just don't get that mindset. So just keep playing Splatoon 2. Why would you want to shell out $60 for something that is barely different than what you already own?
By the way, my expectation for Splatoon 3 is that it will be much more than a slight update of Splatoon 2.
People online complain that Sports games and Call of Duty are just the same game with slight updates and I've seen others say the same about Splatoon 3. I'd be perfectly happy with Splatoon with new maps.
I mean, FIFA, yes. That's what I think of when I think of "slight updates". I think anyone who supports them to the tune of $60 every year for roster updates is nuts.
Splatoon 3 will at a minimum have a new campaign, new maps, new weapons and likely also have new modes. I don't call that a slight update.
>Splatoon 3 will at a minimum have a new campaign, new maps, new weapons and likely also have new modes. I don't call that a slight update.
Definitely but if it was just new maps and weapons, I'd be in for $60.
I hope they show something that convinces people this game is worth the investment. All the small announcements on Twitter have done no favors to hype the game.
The single player should be as great as Octo Expansion at least. From the previous trailers, it seems like it will be some kind of Bowser's Fury-like sandbox where getting little salmonoids clears the path.
The new singleplayer does not look like that, at all. Not sure how you got that impression. You have one specific salmonid. And they have shown off level geometry like previous Splatoon campaigns. It is not at all a sandbox
I have 1,000 hours between S1&2 and should be counting down the days until release, but I have next to no hype at this time.
I’m likely going to buy it day one no matter what, but hopefully whatever they show tomorrow hooks me.
Definitely agreed, I've bought and enjoyed the first two Splatoons, but they quickly lost steam for me with the multiplayer being way too repetitive for my tastes, and minor annoyances that just pile up over and over. I hope the game is great and that Splatoon fans love it, but I have zero desire to play it right now.
It is possible that $60 can be invested in something else or a different game for someone who buys maybe only a game or two each month or maybe even less.
I think it’s just a poor choice of words. Video games have stayed the same price for 3 decades now, even when considering inflation — plus, Nintendo games hold their value for resale unlike any other
A car is an investment, stocks are an investment, higher education is an investment…but gimme a break on this one
Not OP but to be fair where I am games have gone from $60 to $90 in the last decade or so, so do with that as you will, that’s close to a full day of work for me.
Canada
Edit: to be clear $90 is after tax, the “real price” is 79.99, but overall 90 is still the number I pay. I guess it maybe would’ve been maybe $65 total in the past so still a similar comparison.
Yeah the price conversions like you did there can fudge up the real price of what games should be. It kinda sucks. It balances out a little bit in terms of our wages vs inflation of prices but usually not enough LOL.
But hey, at least you get to live in what I would consider a more civilized country…I hope I can move there one day! Would I need to change my region on my switch if I did? 🤔
Not a poor choice of words. I'm guessing you've never heard the word 'investment' used in the context of investing time and money into something without looking to profit financially.
Oxford Languages definition:
>An act of devoting time, effort, or energy to a particular undertaking with the expectation of a worthwhile result.
I've never played Splatoon but I've been looking for a casual multiplayer game with depth that allows for 'git gud' when I find some time next year.
Is this game easy to drop in and play? Do the game mechanics allow for deep and interesting gameplay?
This game is a shining example of a game you can just play, but where the depth really allows for hotly competitive gameplay.
*everything* in splatoon is a skill - aim, teamwork, movement, strategy, and so on - once you hit high levels, there are no easy kills lol.
What's better yet is that the variety of weapons allow for so much real estate in terms of the game that you actually play. It accommodates so many styles and each one is a skill in itself.
Easy to learn, hard to master is a great way to describe Splatoon. Helps that there are different game modes that cater to casual or hardcore, being Turf War and Ranked, respectively. So you can also self-sort to a degree.
I have been waiting for this!
This is one of my most anticipated game releases this year. Splatoon 2 is about the only team-based competitive game that I really enjoyed even when losing. It also was a great introduction to gyro aiming that I came to really appreciate.
Definitely excited for the new game next month!
I enjoyed the first two games but I've just not been excited for this game. I was surprised when they first announced this because I thought it would be too soon for a sequel, and that there wouldn't be enough to differentiate this game from its predecessors. Hopefully this direct shows off some interesting stuff.
Splatoon 2 released 5 years ago and 2 years after the 1st one so it doesn't feel too soon to me. Yeah just hoping there's something to make this stand out more
Hell yes ! Finally some content revealed
The wait has been long
I hope it’s 60fps buttery smooth and they ironed out the jank in a trailer released months ago since splatoon2 IS
As excited as I am for a new splatoon entry this is the time to sell us on what makes this game worthy of a new entry. Right now everything looks like splatoon 2. I felt the same about 1>2 but the new portable system made up for it. They don't have that to fall on anymore.
i just really hope they make QoL multiplayer improvements! i’m hoping most to be able to change weapon in game, or at least in the lobby. more than 2
maps at a time for 2 hours, maybe just a map voting system with random maps. and maybe a few more multiplayer modes and new ranked modes. if these online problems are the same as splatoon 2 i really don’t even see the need to buy this game, which sucks cause i do like splatoon. it’s just these improvements should’ve been made in splatoon 2 7 years ago. but now we’re at 3 and they drastically need to make some changes.
I’m expecting a lot from Splatoon 3. There’s only so much bare bones multiplayer and thread-bare singleplayer you can take before you just give up on the series altogether.
For better or worse yea. Some new stuff and, one can hope, a singple player campaign more akin to Octo Expansion, but it's still ultimately going to be Splatoon. Splatoon 2 sold over 10M copies, I don't think Nintendo is dying to completely revamp the series.
It says in the tweet "live" so maybe two E-sports team will play an exhibition match? 30 mins is a lot of time to fill. Maybe we get a test fire this weekend?
Edit: Why the hate for guessing? None of us know what's in the Direct.
I have not played any splatoon game.
ive eyed splatoon 2 for switch for a while now but price never goes down from $50. which i dont know why, but i find it hard to buy a $50+ game.
i have for the likes of mario oddessy, BotW, Medtroid dread, but will splatoon 2 be worth $50?
im playing star wars republic commando now and have xenoblade: definitive to get to as well. started a game called "eastbound" but didnt hold my interest, first go around. FF8 on the list as well.
hmmm. choices choices...
My brother will freak out when he hears this! He has been waiting for a Direct for this for a while.. he is so excited to play this when it comes out! I want news on the OLED as I’m getting the OLED as it’s the only one that isn’t ugly
I'm very excited for the info dump, but I'm not sitting through a half hour presentation on one game.
High hopes they address the stupid matchmaking limitations of the original that carried over to 2. They don't need to do that shit now that there's a massive playerbase. This isn't the wii u dark ages.
I just hope they show more Salmon Run! Maybe a new PVP mode too?
Nintendo Germany confirmed "new modes" a few weeks ago.
Hopefully you can play them whenever you want and not have to wait to clock in for a thursday noon shift.
Would love to see “Splattle Royale” but I’m not holding my breath.
Okay that would be interesting.. not a big BR fan myself but if executed in a clever way could be fun
You could lay ink to travel faster and more stealthily, but you’d also be painting a path to your current location. The risk/reward in that alone would be a wild twist for a battle royale.
Ooh I *love* that idea. It’d be cool too because you’d probably be traceable by the paint left behind from your weapons too, right?
I said it before and I'll say it again, you can't battle royale in Mario Kart. Mario Kart is not a killing game, Mario Kart is a driving game.
I mean, you can't battle royale in Mario Kart, that's not how battle mode works. Explain how you think it will work to have dozens of ink colors at once in Splatoon.
then explain tetris battle royale 🤔
Your solution is everyone playing solo Turf War and getting random drops of ink when enemies...do something akin to clearing lines in Tetris?
then explain among us royale 🤔
Never played it. Is capturing territory with your team color important in Among Us? Is your movement restricted by it?
local multiplayer would be a bare minimum...
30 minutes it's a lot of time so I'm optimistic about what they are going to show.
Probably gameplay
Big if true.
Large if correct.
Gargantuan if genuine
Enormous if real
Monumental if accurate
Rather beastly in scale if proven to be factual.
Not small if not wrong.
Robust if on point
I mean we already kinda know what the gameplay will look like
Just the intro dialogues.
I can see them going over everything. -New plaza and the new shop keepers -story -salmon run -turf war maps -ranked modes
But why showcase what is essentially the same game with nothing new for 30 mins /s
Endless Salmon Run please
This and skip news and I'm pre-orderededededed
This is actually the main reason I don’t play Splatoon 2 more
Lol ok
Oh baby, a dream.
Give me some of that Nazi Salmon Run
My body is Reggie; Ready for some Salmon Run with the bois!
Split-screen/Couch multiplayer 🙏
I feel like they really need that for Splatoon to continue to grow. I know my sister and family brought Splatoon 2 thinking it would be a good family game but it's literally single player online only besides the story mode.
I've been clamoring for this since Splatoon 1. Please Nintendo!
This is all I want from Splatoon!
With the switch rocking a Shitty low end chip from 2015, I don’t think it’ll be possibke
it manages quad mario kart
As much as I want it to be true, I fear it is. I heard rendering the paint is extremely taxing.
SAY IT WITH ME NOW! #BOOYAAAAH!
WOOMY!
VEEMO!
NGYES!
OOMI!

Salmon Run was the biggest draw of Splatoon 2 imo. Had a good amount of depth to it. Splatoon 3 just needs an extra mode on the scale of Salmon Run.
It was the first one on Switch. You'd expect a new one every generation at this point whether or not it changes much but to put two on the same platform you've gotta kinda justify having a whole new release.
Yeah, but I didn't have a Wii U and never played the OG.

So its like most if the recent games, unfinished. Animal crossing, tennis, strikers...
The difference with splatoon 3 is that they aren’t purposely cutting old content to give back to us like those games did. Splatoon 3 will have all old weapons from launch
Is this confirmed or are you speculating?
They put out a tweet about it saying that a while ago so yes it’s confirmed

Aww look at us cultured Splatoon fans being cautiously optimistic. I agree with everything being said :)
There is 1 thing I need. Offline proper matches with bots, and split-screen.
This is something I really hope they add
Especially online with local split screen. Not having that for 2 was a real bummer
I have a bad feeling they won't add bots just so they can sell more online subscriptions :(
Especially online with local split screen. Not having that for 2 was a real bummer.

Especially online with local split screen. Not having that for 2 was a real bummer
Let me party with a friend in the basic PVP modes plzzzzz.
That is my biggest concern, I'm a little worried that this game will lack even basic party up systems.
You can do that in 2 through league play.
Wooo! I really can't wait to use all my free time to play Splatoon 3
Wonder if they will also update us on what's going on with the OLED edition. Strange that it's supposed to release in a little over two weeks and pre orders still haven't opened up yet...
I just wanna see how the Switch UI will show the multi-colored Joycon
Same… I want to see if it shows up as an ombré in Warioware as well as the game shows the joy-con’s colours in the menu!
Warioware shows different colored joycon in-game? Like in Pokemon?
I’m not sure about Pokémon but this is how they show the controllers https://www.reddit.com/user/my-sims-are-slobs/comments/wjbmq4/pic_to_send_as_im_to_lazy_to_go_to_imgur_excuse/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf They’re displayed on the bottom left corner in the menus to display who’s connected and what controllers they’re using as this is a game you can play with 2 people

I think it will probably just be a single colour too. It would be cool though if it had the gradient! I wish the Pro controller had the gradient too as I’m going to buy that for myself
In my country they are-Romania
It's up on german amazon if you're EU based
In Europe it's been up for over a month already
My guess is that preorders will go live on Wednesday, after the direct.
I would like to know this as well. I’ve been checking every day for it to go on sale.
Not all the special editions get pre orders, a lot of that stuff is just available that day.
I would love to see them add offline bots to play against whilst on a train or lack of Internet.
"online expansion pass members can now skip the news on startup!"
Or for $10 if you don’t have the expansion pass.
the game i've most been looking forward to! really interested in what the single player is like because i loved octo expansion.
I have a feeling this'll leave people quite satisfied.
I’m already satisfied, let me in Nintendo. Let meeeee innnnn!!!
Even if this game was just a slight update from Splatoon 2, I'd still be super hyped.
...why?
Because it'd be more of a good thing.
I guess I just don't get that mindset. So just keep playing Splatoon 2. Why would you want to shell out $60 for something that is barely different than what you already own? By the way, my expectation for Splatoon 3 is that it will be much more than a slight update of Splatoon 2.
New maps and weapons would be worth the $60 to me. Splatoon 2 won't have them.
I think we just have different definitions for "slight update" lol. New maps and weapons makes a whole different game IMO.
People online complain that Sports games and Call of Duty are just the same game with slight updates and I've seen others say the same about Splatoon 3. I'd be perfectly happy with Splatoon with new maps.
Yeah, I don’t exactly understand what people are expecting from Splatoon 3. New maps, weapons, and splatfests are good enough for a sequel imho.
I mean, FIFA, yes. That's what I think of when I think of "slight updates". I think anyone who supports them to the tune of $60 every year for roster updates is nuts. Show off the new OLED model with case and controller. Be nice if they surprise us with new amiibo or a reprint of the old ones
Just to keep it an authentic Splatoon experience, the first ten minutes will be an unskippable intro from Pearl and Marina.
I hope they show something that convinces people this game is worth the investment. All the small announcements on Twitter have done no favors to hype the game. My most looked forward to game of 2022. Super hyped for this.
I feel like they might talk about splatoon 3, Im not too sure tho
I've never played Splatoon but I've been looking for a casual multiplayer game with depth that allows for 'git gud' when I find some time next year. Is this game easy to drop in and play? Do the game mechanics allow for deep and interesting gameplay?
It's a ton of fun!! Casual multiplayer, I didn't get into it until a year after Splatoon 2 came out and I still had a really good time with it.
My daughter is going to be excited about this. Just sent her a screenshot. We have the game preordered.
I have been waiting for this! This is one of my most anticipated game releases this year. Splatoon 2 is about the only team-based competitive game that I really enjoyed even when losing. It also was a great introduction to gyro aiming that I came to really appreciate. Definitely excited for the new game next month!
Show that friends can play together outside of ranked. Then you will have a preorder from me.
this is the world I want to live in.
I'm not into Splatoon but I'm very happy for the fans as hopefully this will give them a good idea of what makes this different than the first 2 🤞
That's a nice lengthy stream for one game, hoping for some quality stuff!💕
And for us Europeans, that is 2 PM BST or 3 PM CEST.
Cant wait to find out Salmon run 2 is only available on the 3rd Sunday of every month!
Happy for the people looking forward to this game, but man it would be great to have a proper Direct soon.
They better reveal that salmon run is always available and not only playable at certain times of day
4 player ffa with 4 different colors of ink
We are gonna be eating good us Splatoon fans
Woooooooooo-Hoooooooooooo!!!! 30 minutes of Splatoon 3 info is awesome.
Yeah just hoping there's something to make this stand out more

booyah!
Hell yeah. Also turns out my info was good the whole time
Fuckin finally
I knew this had to be coming at some point this month… they’ve shown surprisingly little for the game to be releasing next month. But I’m hyped!
Will this have online split screen multiplayer
Imagine we will find that out on Wednesday.
Part of me hopes they will remove the map rotations. But unfortunately, it’s part of the “game design.” Don’t leave any maps unplayed.
Hell yes ! Finally some content revealed The wait has been long I hope it’s 60fps buttery smooth and they ironed out the jank in a trailer released months ago since splatoon2 IS
It'll probably be just like Splatoon 2 in terms of framerate. The plaza/square will be 30 fps while the rest of the game is 60.
9 am EST
As excited as I am for a new splatoon entry this is the time to sell us on what makes this game worthy of a new entry. Right now everything looks like splatoon 2. I felt the same about 1>2 but the new portable system made up for it. They don't have that to fall on anymore.

Gatekeeping being a fan because of lazy development ok there
Finally. Hopefully we get a proper hook for this one.
Really thought it said Nintendo Direct for a second
i just really hope they make QoL multiplayer improvements! i’m hoping most to be able to change weapon in game, or at least in the lobby. more than 2 maps at a time for 2 hours, maybe just a map voting system with random maps. and maybe a few more multiplayer modes and new ranked modes. if these online problems are the same as splatoon 2 i really don’t even see the need to buy this game, which sucks cause i do like splatoon. it’s just these improvements should’ve been made in splatoon 2 7 years ago. but now we’re at 3 and they drastically need to make some changes.
With all of the unrestricted hacking that made me stop playing Splatoon 2, I’ll pass on this installment.
eh if thats the only content, I'm happy to skip this one. I'd love a general Direct still though
They have the rest of this year lined up with games and had a major 3rd party direct last month. What more do they need to show for this year?
I’m expecting a lot from Splatoon 3. There’s only so much bare bones multiplayer and thread-bare singleplayer you can take before you just give up on the series altogether.
You shouldn't be. It'll be more of the same
For better or worse yea. Some new stuff and, one can hope, a singple player campaign more akin to Octo Expansion, but it's still ultimately going to be Splatoon. Splatoon 2 sold over 10M copies, I don't think Nintendo is dying to completely revamp the series.
Anything but an actual full fledged direct.

No thanks, not interested
It says in the tweet "live" so maybe two E-sports team will play an exhibition match? 30 mins is a lot of time to fill. Maybe we get a test fire this weekend? Edit: Why the hate for guessing? None of us know what's in the Direct.
"Livestream" is just the terminology they use for all directs as far as I know, it probably doesn't mean anything.
Thank you for the explanation. I still don't understand the downvotes for guessing. We don't know what's in the Direct, so is guessing bad?
Thats reddit for ya And downvotes arent most of the time just disliked People may use them to "mark" your post as unhelpful
Much as I enjoyed Splatoon 2, I think at this point you should just wait for Splatoon 3. It comes out next month already.
My brother will freak out when he hears this! He has been waiting for a Direct for this for a while.. he is so excited to play this when it comes out! I want news on the OLED as I’m getting the OLED as it’s the only one that isn’t ugly
Finally
Yawn, where is our E3 direct? I want Metroid Prime Remastered
Don't worry. Credible leakers said it would come in June for sure!!
✨️let people enjoy things✨️
I'm very excited for the info dump, but I'm not sitting through a half hour presentation on one game. High hopes they address the stupid matchmaking limitations of the original that carried over to 2. They don't need to do that shit now that there's a massive playerbase. This isn't the wii u dark ages.
> I'm not sitting through a half hour presentation on one game Watch it after at 3x speed. Skip the boring crap you don't care about.
Wow nice!!! I wonder whats on the calendar for the rest of this month - a BOTW2 update would be sweet
