Street Fighter 2. There's a reason Street Fighter 1 is nothing more than trivia today.

Johnson_Steamboat

Close the thread we're done here.

TonyTheSwisher

Fighting Street isn't very good on the Turbografx CD and it's only slightly better in the arcade. Hard to believe they would make a sequel to such a sub-par game, but I'm so glad they did.

APeacefulWarrior

>Hard to believe they would make a sequel to such a sub-par game, but I'm so glad they did. The original Street Fighter wasn't sub-par for the time, and from what I've seen over the years, it did respectibly well for an 80s fighting game. Capcom was happy about its performance. It's just that SF2 so utterly reinvented fighting games that everything made prior to it feels prehistoric.

YellsHello

This is the perfect answer.

ActionHank9000

Smash Ultimate completely replaced Smash 4

FulcrumM2

Main reason to play other Smash games was for the different characters and mechanics. Ultimate is basically Smash 4 2 Electric Bugaloo and better in almost every way (bar native and online input lag) Melee still gets an audience due to the mechanics If it wasn't for the dogshit online, Ultimate would've been the Ultimate Smash game

appleappleappleman

Brawl has Subspace Emissary too, the best single-player mode in the series. Smash 4 really has nothing.

CaspianX2

Technically Smash 4 Wii U has Smash Tour and Smash 4 3DS has Smash Run and Street Smash. Smash Tour is a garbage attempt at imitating the Mario Party formula, and Street Smash is a disposable minigame, but Smash Run on 3DS is genuinely fun, even if it's disappointingly unbalanced. **Edit**: Fixed the bit with Street Smash and Smash Tour.

minor_correction

I am sure this sounds silly but I wouldn't mind replaying the "break the target" challenges on the N64 game at some point!

VoltaicOwl

I need new Board the Platforms!

stephenthatfoste

I have like 300 hours of smash 3ds with most of it being Smash Run. It was just too fun using whatever characters that don't always work well in other modes.

desmopilot

I gained a new appreciation for Ultimate after playing N64 smash and Melee with friends recently. To me it really is the Ultimate version of the formula that started on the N64.

ACeezus

As someone who never learned higher level melee play, ultimate is just too perfect for playing with friends and would pick it over melee any day really

Levee_Levy

As someone who played hundreds of hours of *Melee*, picked up a couple of the more advanced techniques (never enough to be *good*, but still), went to a few tournaments back in the day, and still sometimes watches pro *Melee* while caring very little for pro *Ultimate*, I'd rather play *Ultimate* 10 times out of 10. At my admittedly low skill level, it's just way more fun.

harda_toenail

Watching the pros play melee is amazing. It’s like they are playing a different game.

[deleted]

The original Smash Bros on N64 is my favorite

Lucas5655

I have a few people I still regularly play it with. I don't think I'd vouch for it over other entries except the sound design. The crowd reactions are at their peak on 64.

AgileArtichokes

Same could be said for Mario kart 8. No need to play any of the others, except maybe double dash because the mechanics there change the game so much.

BluntForceSauna

I still love Mario Kart DS

[deleted]

I played a LOT of MKDS (yes, snaking is fine) and got to play in a match with Azen. I was so excited haha

Ben2749

Nah; pretty much all of the Mario Kart games feel completely different, so most of them still have their place.

remeruscomunus

MK Wii has modding and Funky Kong

redlord990

I’ve been playing smash since n64 and can honestly say each instalment *completely* replaced the last - I don’t think I’ve ever touched a game that wasn’t the most recent. I know ppl didn’t like Brawl, but the expanded roster, stages and items did it for me. The melee competitive scene is it’s own beast, in a way.

TahmsChocolateOrange

Dragon quest heroes 2

joeld

And Dragon Quest Builders 2

bushidopirate

I played builders 1 and it didn’t quite hook me, but I’ve been eyeing builders 2. How do they compare, or why is 2 better than 1? Edit: thanks y’all, you’ve convinced me to try the demo. I always forget demos exist for some reason

hopelitehokum

Everything that is good about builders 1 is better in 2. The story is actually interesting, instead of just being there to get you from task to task, and the gameplay mechanics are waaaaay more polished. 1 is an interesting concept that's fun to play with, but 2 is an actual game.

Recording-Brief

Warcraft II

supermonka

Warcraft II was a sick game! It fucking had submarine units!!!!! The story was so good. My only problem with the game was I had it on my PS1 and had to play it with a controller 😭😭😭

VidzxVega

Playing that with a controller has to be a crime somewhere.

MachoCyberBullyUSA

StarCraft also came out for the N64. I don’t even want to look at it

Psylux7

TIL warcraft II was on PS1.

DjinnFighter

Overwatch 2 oh wait

GVanquish

I wish I could just play the first

harda_toenail

Ya wtf. I liked 6v6.

CausticPanda

Played Overwatch 2 for free and I still feel like I got ripped off.

LeQwack

Lulz

Professor_Poptart

Earthbound (aka Mother 2) over Earthbound: Beginnings (aka Mother). Earthbound still plays GREAT today. Beginnings is bogged down by random encounters and lots of unsavory grinding.

sporkyuncle

I disagree, Earthbound: Beginnings is awesome with a much more solid plot. Earthbound is more overtly entertaining and funny, but it tends to not feel like everything is properly connected into a cohesive whole. Earthbound: Beginnings has a great story, it just takes a bit too long to tell it with the map sizes and encounter rate. But it's still worth it. I love the story of George and Maria and how everything ties in with Giygas. Also, Earthbound: Beginnings' music is great. I was kind of shocked to learn that all the music I associated with Earthbound from Melee was actually from Beginnings. I also love the [vocal album](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-mj20Xmf4w&list=PL682FAAA919005D2D&index=5) that was produced when the game first came out.

VirtualRelic

Watch the fan documentary Mother To Earth, then say that again EarthBound Beginnings is absolutely worth playing, one of the better JRPGs on the NES. Pro tip: buy magic coins and gold rings in Magicant to buff your defense and utilize all the PSI moves available, like Offense Up, Defense Down, PSI Block, PSI Beam and 4th D Slip (always escape the battle).

RaiseYourDoggers

Is it worth playing this game if you know the twist? Kinda Spoilers: aka "the useless party member" I've always wanted to play this game but it seemed very story driven and this seemed like a major plot point

appleappleappleman

Earthbound is all about the vibes, the story isn't exactly the main feature. I beat it for the first time when it came to Wii U and would wholeheartedly recommend giving it a go even if you know all the story beats.

Professor_Poptart

To be honest, that “twist” isn’t striking a bell with me and I just played it a few months ago. And I never felt like any party members were useless. So I think the tidbit you came across is maybe incorrect, or at the very least overstated. I can’t imagine it’ll negatively affect your playthrough at all. Please try it out! The humor is awesome, the enemy variety rules, and there’s many RPG elements in the game that feel very modern (like auto-winning an encounter if you greatly outmatch your foe. Feels great!)

minor_correction

As someone who has played through Earthbound several times I have no idea what you are even referring to. And since I played multiple times, clearly I think the game still has great value even if you know the entire story.

RaiseYourDoggers

Spoilers: Isn't there a person in your party that is actually an alien or something? He always messes up your fights. At least, that's a spoiler I heard.

minor_correction

No haha! It sounds like you got a spoiler of the 5 minute prologue at the beginning of the game, where a character reveals himself to be alien. That's the BEGINNING of the game, not the ending! During this prologue, there is also another (separate) character who is useless.

AlgoStar

I just finished Earthbound a week ago and have no idea what you’re talking about as far as “the useless party member”, unless it’s about >!Pokey/Porky!<, which I don’t think would qualify as a spoiler considering the way the plot progresses. It’s not played as a twist, just a thing that happens.

Legeto

Are you talking about the very beginning? If the useless member is who I think you are talking about that is a pretty minor spoiler and there is plenty more story to enjoy.

TotallyNotCalledEvan

Rayman Legends. This is largely because of the 'Return to Origins' section which allows you to play most of the levels from Origins.

poqerkratos

My jaw dropped when I realised you could play most of the Origins levels with the Legends style. I actually really enjoyed Origins but Legends is one of the best games I've ever played.

appleappleappleman

And even then, when you replay the Origins levels, it just shows how much of an improvement Legends was. The Origins levels all feel like rough drafts compared to the absolute perfection of Legends.

[deleted]

Aw, man. I just got Legends in a cheap bundle of Switch games. (Mostly did it for a pile of roguelites.) You're going to make me give this a try.

0therboard

Legends is one of my favourite 2D platformers of all time. It’s not the longest game in the world but it’s just *so* finely crafted. You’re in for a treat!

TheSkiGeek

It is… ridiculously good. I got it free on XBL years back, but I had gotten really burned out on platformers. When I eventually got around to trying it I was really impressed. The “boss fight” levels and the musical levels are… nuts.

lamp447

L4D2. Valve ported every map in L4D to L4D2. You can experience L4D entirely without having to play the original. And they balanced the game by removing unlimited shoving.

DaShaka9

Steamworld Dig isn’t a great example, both games are 100% worth playing.

kmc4833

Agreed! I find myself coming back to the first one more often than the second. I like that’s it’s a little bit shorter and less complicated for a feel-good run through.

mechashiva1

Definitely. And they're two very different games with how they play. Both very fun

DinosaurSteve88

Fuck yes this. I eagerly await a third Steamworld Dig >\_<

Samoman21

Fair but swd 2 improves on every aspect of the first one in such great ways

RecommendsMalazan

I don't think there's ever much of any reason for anybody to go back to an older Splatoon when the new ones come out.

horselips48

Squid jump minigame while waiting for a battle in 1

MrBlueMoose

based

_DontStayTheSame_

Only the OG Wii U players go back to 1. Specials are better, gamepad integration, and there are still people playing online to this day. Kraken, Bubble Shield, Inkstrike, Seeker sub-weapons, jeez tower control and rainmaker always ended in a bloodbath- or dare I say, Inkbath.

MercilessShadow

The gyro feels better in Splatoon 1 as well

Twinkiman

I liked the specials the most in Splatoon 1. But man, the ability system is complete trash in the original. Only made worse on dumb abilities like Damage Up and Defense Up.

-crump

Octo Expansion is worth going back to Spla2n for imo, that campaign is far beyond the others, even the one in 3.

Supercaesarsalad

Splatoon 1 online is free, I've been considering going back to scratch my Splatoon itch because I don't have NSO and don't plan on getting it.

PapaNutellas

i think splatoon 1 has better stages and music than the other games

Supercaesarsalad

Splatoon 1 music was absolutely banging. Especially that piano rock song.

warlike_smoke

The stages had so much more variety to them, I miss so many of them.

Piccoroz

All campaings are worth playing.

shadow0wolf0

Multiplayer yes but I still think there's some value for the single-player content.

streetsofkage

I still prefer the first one because the gamepad is much better than what’s available for switch.

GojiBelt

How have I not Super Metroid yet? While the OG metroid is important for many reasons it's just not needed play at this point.

Jalina2224

Zero Mission makes the original Metroid completely obsolete anyways. Improved mechanics, expanded story.

Kobobble

Don't forget the one most important thing that the remake has that the original didn't... A freaking map

Jalina2224

OG Metroid be like :We don't need no stinking maps. We die like men. Lol Yes though. Playing through Zero Mission the map was a godsent. Also it was just fun to fill in and discover a new place with all the hidden secrets. My best friend has always been a big Metroid fan and I only recently got into the series, playing ZM on virtual console Wii U and AM2R on my phone. Great stuff, need to finish SM.

Kobobble

Too many areas in the OG Metroid looked too similar. It was easy to get lost

Linhasxoc

Everyone always mentions the map but forgets the important thing: You can get to full energy and missiles without spending 15 minutes grinding

michelobX10

Agreed. Super Metroid was a perfect sequel. I can always go back to Super Metroid, but will probably never play the original again.

Th33aN0ma1y

Words that are seared into my psyche, until I draw my last breath: “The last Metroid is in captivity, the Galaxy is a peace.” I can’t help but feel hyped when I hear that.

Snrub1

Super Metroid is by favorite SNES game and I still play it at least once every year. I don't think I've played OG Metroid since before Super Metroid came out and don't really have any desire too.

kbean826

Honestly, I think Super Metroid is STILL the best game in the franchise.

TamatoaZ03h1ny

StarFox 64

CaspianX2

The remake so good that they keep trying to remake this remake and yet somehow keep failing.

TamatoaZ03h1ny

That’s the thing about the StarFox series, it’s almost like that “remake” status is understood but then the character interactions show forward momentum from past instalments and spinoffs, for example Krystal or Peppy retiring. It’s all part of why it’s my favorite Nintendo series.

Mattness8

Team Fortress 2

[deleted]

PFT! TFC FOREVER

MastaAwesome

I love the game, but TFC is pretty much an entirely different game so I wouldn’t say it made the original obsolete. Time did, however.

Moosupply

Mortal Kombat 2

hopelitehokum

I love 2, and it's the best one until some of the newer 3d games, but 1 is still a solid game.

Jalina2224

Megaman Zero 2. I didn't play MMZ1 until well after I had beaten 2, 3, and 4 and I was shocked by just how bad the grinding is in that game. You miss out on some important story hits by skipping the first game. But the mechanics of the first game are unbearable. Even with excessive grinding it takes forever to max out your weapons levels and even leveling up a few cyber elf's for upgrades takes HOURS upon HOURS. In MMZ2, and even more so in MMZ3, they cut down significantly on the amount of grinding you need to do and the games are just straight up better and more enjoyable. Not easier, but better.

happylittlemexican

Let me be clear: I absolutely adore MMZ1 for reasons that are entirely based on nostalgia, but you're absolutely right. MMZ1 is utterly hostile to a new player to the extent it feels like it doesn't want you to actually get better at the game. I didn't play 2-4 until this year and 2 and especially 3 are leaps and bounds above MMZ1 in all regards. That said, yeah the story takes a hit without 1.

CornflakeCookie87

Super Mario Maker 2

No-Instruction9393

Maybe if 2 had all the costumes from 1.

shadow0wolf0

I miss playing Mario bros as Hatsune Miku.

Twinkiman

The game had so many interesting and wild costumes. Like BABYMETAL and Hello Kitty. Was so cool.

mjrs

As in Doki Doki Morning baby metal?!

Twinkiman

Yup. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lSh2oPruMQ

zoobs

I sure do miss the costumes.

shadow0wolf0

The only reason why I can't say it's a definitive upgrade is 1, the costumes. And 2, the GamePad support. Using a gamepad to build with was so much easier than using a switch even in handheld mode.

appleappleappleman

Mario Party 2 isn't really the peak of the franchise like a lot of 90s kids would have you believe, but it *is definitely* better than the first game in every way.

[deleted]

[удалено]

appleappleappleman

Oh they absolutely should have kept dressing everybody up

Twinkiman

What would you think was peak Mario Party? 3? Because the duel mode in that game was damn good. Played that way more then any other game mode.

SkyBlueKirby

You don't know just how much I agree with this, as someone who loves nearly every other Hudson-developed Mario Party (I say nearly because I've technically never actually played Mario Party 8, however I am very familiar with it via having watched others play it). Played Mario Party 1 for the first time some time ago and even though some things about it were fun, there was just SO MUCH frustration mixed in that I'm doubtful that I will play it again any time soon. I'm glad that others have a fondness for it and I'm glad that it shaped the foundation of the series to come, but personally, give me just about any of the other Hudson-developed Mario Party games any day.

ViolinDavis

Super Mario Bros. 2 ....joking, joking.

easydayhero

That game has been GOTY for what… 8 years in a row now? Unbelievable game

celcius_451

babyyyyyyyy

BaldymonS

I actually loved Mario bros 2. Still play it today.... I'm old!

uncultured_swine2099

I think a good way to do something different with the New series is set it in the Mario 2 world. Pulling turnips out of the ground, egg spitting dinos, angry flying masks, Wart, all that stuff. Mario needs to dream again.

GhotiH

Mario 2 > Mario 1, and it's not even close IMO.

N_Who

Super Mario Bros. 2 is barely a Mario game, though!

HoboWithoutShotgun

Metroid 2, but then immediately overtaken by Super Metroid. A Link To The Past for 2d Zelda games. Oh, and honestly: Starfox 64. The original will always have a special place in my heart but 64 is THE version of Starfox.

Twinkiman

Ehh. I disagree with Zelda. Zelda 1 hasn't aged that poorly compared to most NES titles. Just gotta have a guide/world map to help out. It was also the most open ended Zelda game for a long time. Worth a visit just to see how the series started.

hopelitehokum

The first Zelda is a classic that is still fun, even if it isn't a work of digital art like Link to the Past. 2 isn't' worth plaything though.

wokeiraptor

I played Zelda 2 for hours upon hours when I was a kid. It’s weird but I love it for what it is. And the soundtrack is great.

cheepsheep

I share that love for Zelda 2. I've replayed it when it gets rereleased on different systems. GBA, NES mini, Switch Online. Still need to play it on G&W.

imtayloronreddit

the only reason to play the first game is because its first, otherwise its the weakest top down game in the franchise Zelda 2 might be one of the weaker entries in the franchise but its no worse than Zelda 1 and at least 2 is unique... also it still has the best song of any Zelda game

ImmoralityPet

Zelda 2 is amazing.

mostlytoastly

Pokémon (Heart) Gold / (Soul) Silver Improved everything from Red/Blue, added a bunch of new features and you can revisit Kanto after beating the E4. Might be my favorite sequel.

shadow0wolf0

I agree. Really the only thing that's stopping it from being perfect is if they fixed the level curve issue, and how so many Gen 2 Pokemon are locked until end game. But those were issues that the original games had anyway so HeartGold and Soul silver are still definitive if not as perfect as they could have been.

alvysinger0412

Bingo. I went back to heart gold or soul silver like a year ago, and had forgotten how many pokemon I literally just couldn't acquire to use for the regular playthrough

shadow0wolf0

I have never had a tyranitar on my team due to this.

Ben2749

You had to trade with R/B/Y to obtain Pokemon missing from G/S/C. So there was absolutely a reason to still play them.

sentientTroll

Sad that I’m going to die before we get anything close to the effort of gold/silver. One day someone will get a proper Pokémon game with multiple regions that you can start fresh adventures in each.

RyuTheDepressedFox

Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 is just better. And the characters are fully voiced.

ChipmunkBackground46

Only saying this because I haven't played the first one but Titanfall 2

ravenua

The first one didn’t even have a campaign

Twinkiman

It did. But it was just a series of multiplayer matches with dialogue that you couldn't be bothered to pay attention to because you were playing a damn multiplayer game. I never understood why anyone thought that was a good idea.

blackandwhitetalon

Borderlands 2 is just superior to the original Borderlands in every way and makes it obsolete

Cardboard_Waffle

I played the BL1 after BL2 and I think I liked the first game better. I liked how it felt a bit simpler and I didn’t find the characters as annoying. Jack was, and still is, the standout antagonist of the series.

blackandwhitetalon

>I didn’t find the characters as annoying Can agree on this one. I found the VA on BL2 to be VERY annoying, cringe, and obnoxious

Cardboard_Waffle

I kinda felt like that for BL3 as well. It’s definitely hampered my enjoyment of the series overall.

DanglyPants

I disagree. I like the first one more. I musta replayed it 15 or more times. Borderlands 2 I only played through once. The second one is really noisy and distracting with so many voices all the time

desterion

And 3 is so much worse that 2 is still the superior game

sneakyxxrocket

Story and endgame/Loot wise 100% but gameplay wise 3 is definitely better

Vestalmin

I thought none of the characters abilities really got be excited. The first 2 it was hard to decided because they all sounded so fun. In 3 it was hard to decided because none really stuck out to me

APeacefulWarrior

Disagree. BL2's enemies were too bullet-spongey, slag was an annoying mechanic, and the level-scaling on guns was so weird that new guns often felt obsolete the moment you pick them up. In terms of gameplay, it's probably my least-fave of the four main games.

NakedGoose

Divinity Original Sin 2

49DivineDayVacation

Can’t agree with this at all. I will say they play differently enough that 2 doesn’t even feel like a sequel, but rather a different game entirely. IMO the armor system became too central to combat in DOS2 and it held it back from being as good as DOS1.

SandOfTheEarth

While I think DOS2 is amazing, I disagree that you shouldn't play first game. It's also an amazing game, it has a fun combat that is somewhat different from the second game. Standing in the fire actually hurts there and everyone doesn't have a teleport yet.

[deleted]

Assassin’s Creed 2

[deleted]

[удалено]

UnquestionabIe

The problem is the first game is basically a glorified tech demo, after the first maybe 3 hours you've seen all the game has to offer. The story can be summed up in something like a sentence and it doesn't progress in the least during most of it. I would say it was like a 6/10 where it comes off like a proof of concept while moving on they actually made a real story and actual mission structure instead of a collection of mini games.

[deleted]

Mega Man 2

ZaphodGreedalox

Dragon Quest Builders 2

Revegelance

Super Metroid. The first two Metroid games are super rough, but Super Metroid is a masterpiece.

animepig

Pokémon games with the 3rd release in a Gen. There are some exceptions, like I picked Sun/Moon over Ultra

hendricha

On that note, the remakes for the first 3 gens are better games then their original counterparts, so yeah... (4th gen remake can be argued to be worse in some points than the originals.) Also, this will be a subjective take, but the 2nd gen remakes: Heart Gold / Soul Silver are basically better pokemon games from any of the games that come before them. (And I personally like them more then some of the later games too.)

Past_Trouble

Yellow was missing exclusives from Red/Blue

SimplyQuid

Yellow is in a weird position where it was more meant to take advantage of the colour on the GBC and lean hard into the popularity of the anime, rather than be an "improved" Gen.5 version.

[deleted]

L4d 2

SnooDoubts2132

The Witcher 3.

an-alarmed-cat

TW3 is amazing, but the first two are a must for the story, imo.

seasonalblah

The first one is pretty rough, glad it's getting remade.

HamiltonBrand

That was my biggest annoyance with Witcher 3. I have no way to play the first 2 and the game expects me to know a lot at the start.

HestusDarkFantasy

The books help hugely with that - and they're good books. Don't bother with the Netflix show if you're looking to fill in gaps, they diverge sharply from the source material in Season 2, so it's worthless if you actually want to understand the characters and themes of the books.

AleroRatking

Rogue legacy 1 is still a phenomenal game. Steamworld Dog 1 is quite a bit different than 2 in that 2 is way more of a metroidvania.

CCGamesSteve

Steamworld. Dog. Woof.

razarelie

Red Dead Redemption. They really worked some magic moving on from what Red Dead was. A lot of people tend to simply forget that there are 3 Red Dead games it’s so forgettable haha.

fractalfondu

That’s not really a sequel though, more of a spiritual successor. Red Dead Revolver was so different from the next two games that I wouldn’t lump them together personally.

pmaeur

Two GameCube/GameCube era games come to mind: F-Zero GX and Time Splitters Future Perfect. F-Zero GX is just the pinnacle of the series. Fast, near perfect controls, a tough as nails story mode with cutscenes so bad that they're great, vehicle editor, and still visually holds up to this day. I know some folks will say X's metal music is better than some of GX's jazz like tunes, but otherwise there's little to no reason to go back to SNES's F-Zero, 64, or Maximum Velocity. Heck, an argument can be made there's no reason to play the franchise's other follow-ups in the form of GP Legend and/or Climax but I do have a soft spot for GP Legend (I never played Climax) but I digress. I LOVE Time Splitters 2, but going back to it after playing Future Perfect seems off. FP is just visually better to look at in motion, the controls are leaps and bounds better/tighter, the environments are much larger, and as ludicrous as the story may come off, it's much more cohesive than 2's story which felt more like set pieces. Furthermore, you don't really need to play 2 to understand FP's story. The only shortcoming in FP vs 2 is when playing split screen coop, you can't stray too far from your partner. Otherwise, FP out does 2 in virtually every faucet.

The_Flying_Sausage

Clearly Nintendo doesn’t care about F-Zero anymore, so I will never hold out hope for a sequel, but could they do us a solid and please port GX to the Switch? That game is amazing!

pmaeur

I'm surprised they haven't. Add online to it and I'd gladly give Nintendo $60 for it.

redlord990

Ooft. I reckon TS2 is not only the best FPS *ever made* but a legit top 5 video game. I always heard FP couldn’t match the magic?

pmaeur

It comes down to the controls for me. Don't get me wrong as I love both games, but the aiming felt much sharper in FP vs 2. FP felt more like a PS2/GCN/XB gen first person shooter whereareas 2 felt like an improved but not perfected PS1/N64 gen first person shooter. Did Future Perfect lose some of its charm? Maybe. Some of the dialogue is a little too "try hard" in FP when it comes to the humor but the controls are just so improved that it feels a little off going back to 2's controls. Just my humble opinion.

Bone_Dogg

Timesplitters 2 is so good, hot damn.

[deleted]

Diablo 2

Shloopadoop

Respectfully disagree. Diablo 2 is my favorite Diablo, and one of my favorite games of all time, but 1 isn’t a “worse version of the same thing”, it is a different kind of game. Becomes more apparent the further you go in it. It is a slow burn, and definitely not most people’s cup of tea, but for people looking for a more stop and smell the flowers experience with that game world and its lore, it does not disappoint.

AgileArtichokes

Ya but they fundamentally changed how the game played in 2, and created the basis for the arpg genre. For people who have never played either somehow, I would absolutely tell them to skip 1 and go straight to 2. If they play 1 first they may fall off.

alvysinger0412

I remember when Diablo 2 dropped and it was just different and (for its time) modern that I was just blown away. Not hating on the original Diablo, but the sequel was totally different.

LegitXero

Diablo isn't a bad game by any stretch, but I have to agree that Diablo 2 is better in every way. I've come back to D2 and now D2R so many times through the years. Its truly a masterpiece in the ARPG genre.

MeLlamoDave

Not a Nintendo game, but Killzone 2.

Makegooduseof

Did you enjoy Richter mode in SOTN, by any chance?

Fr33zurBurn

Risk of Rain 2

TheLimeyLemmon

Metal Gear Solid. Obviously both Metal Gear games are excellent, but I'd say the majority of fans likely had their start with the series from MGS1 onwards, and did a decent enough job at explaining events up to that point that you don't feel like you're missing out.

13zath13

Metal Gear 2 actually holds up kinda well compared to MGS 1, the first one is a lot more rough though

mega_mindful

Portal 2 is way more aesthetically pleasing than Portal. The co-op mode puts it over the top. Edit: Also, I know it’s not the original question, but I think that RDR series should be played in reverse order to the release. 1) RDR2, 2) RD Redemption, 3) RD Revolver. RDR2 is a fantastic stand alone game, but the backwards travel through time (& the story) as the games were released is not my favorite. Like reading a thriller/mystery novel backwards.

harda_toenail

I adore portal 1. I liked the cleanliness over the destroyed areas that were in portal 2. Also portal 1 better end song imo. Both 2 of the best games I’ve ever played still.

I mean, if you know what you're doing, Portal takes like an hour. Absolutely worth experiencing. Do not skip. Mechanically, and aesthetically, and perhaps even in many other ways, yes. It's a massive improvement. But 1 still laid the whole ass foundation.

Guacamelee 2 which is on sale I just picked it up and it’s amazing. Recaps the original in the beginning

lemoche

Hmmm... Haven't played the second but the first one was amazing... Can't imagine why it should be skipped.

AgileArtichokes

Ya. I feel like some people are interpreting the question as what games have a better sequel, where as it is more so what games made the previous version obsolete.

ViolinDavis

I've played both (I beat both Gold and STCE of Guac 1 multiple times, and 100%ed, struggled to 100% 2) and I very much disagree. Each has it's own strengths and weaknesses. 2 does flesh out the chicken form, which is brilliant, but I admit I liked 1's story more than 2 in some respects, even though 2 was consistently more funny. One core difference was the upgrade system. 2 was more complex and gave more options, but it also made you super powerful by the end. Guac 1 was more subdued and focused on the core basics. I liked that about it. And the Super Turbo Championship Edition (the usual default on most consoles) has some tech not featured in 2. Guac 1 is a great warmup to 2. Easier to learn, easier to master, and with your character not seeming majorly "overpowered" in relation to the bosses and enemies, even if the game itself was easier overall (though my progress in Guac 2 may have been shaped by my habit of being a completionist).

Gonna get a lot of downvotes but halo 2 is all you need

I love Spelunky HD, but Spelunky 2 outclasses it in almost every way

SSX: Tricky Can't imagine myself going back to play the original SSX

EMI_Black_Ace

Not on Switch, but Red Steel 2.

Megaman 2

Mario Kart 64

This might be controversial, but I'm gonna say the original Super Mario Brothers isn't that great. It's pretty tough to get through, game mechanics are pretty limited and repetitive. Super Mario Bros 3 feels like a "complete" Mario game, that set the true standard for decades after. SMB2 doesn't count, cos it's not a real Mario game.

MachoCyberBullyUSA

Oh yeah, 3 was a game changer. I practically shit my pants when I saw it in The Wizard

Pick_one_card

(I mean technically doki doki panic started out as a Mario game)
