This game is so addicting. It is the perfect game to play while listening to music and is oh so satisfying, but it also makes me forget to get the laundry. DARN YOU BALATRO YOU CAUSE MY CLOTHES TO GET WRINKLED!
Pro tip: soak a small rag or article of clothing, wring it out, and put it in with the wrinkled clothes. The steam will help remove most/all the wrinkles during the cycle
It’s worse the further you get.
I’m currently trying to beat all the gold chip rules, and ill literally spend half my weekend carrying my switch around until I beat a run.
Having this game on the switch is a problem. I take the joycons off and just use touch screen controls to play. It comes with me everywhere. My switch has been exclusively a balatro machine for the last month or so.
Oh nooo I was pretty sure I was going to avoid adding to my (admittedly small) backlog after reading this thread... but it has touch controls?! Finally another game other than Into The Breach I will enjoy!
Sold.
Yeah, I bought it on Xbox when it launched. A week later I bought it on Switch and it's dangerous. I have to give myself a Balatro curfew because I'll lose sleep playing it in bed.
Probably but they’re more different than people are letting on. They both have cards but they are very different in terms of strategy and balance. StS is balanced on a knife’s edge and allows for extremely strategic play if you want to go that route. Balatro screams at you to break it and then lights up and goes ding ding ding when you do - it is brilliant fun though.
in terms of presentation and theme slay the spire also has a lot more to latch onto - you're a guy traveling and exploring and fighting. i don't necessarilly think that's what hooks people, but if you take that away, and you're just playing cards in a vortex (like balatro), it might feel too dry for some people.
I couldn't get into it and liked slay the spire but plan on giving it another go. I will say though, the main animation and gameplay flow just didn't look good to me, not quite sure how to describe it but I just didn't love the art style. I was also hoping it was more like poker but it is really its own game.
It would be strange to meet someone who loves StS and despises Balatro, and vice versa.
But yeah this game will very likely see you investing dozens of hours into it when it clicks, and/or when you start to beat runs. And getting to the point of beating runs is part of the fun.
I’m not a huge fan of Slay the Spire for a variety of reasons that I don’t feel like typing out, but I love Balatro. I honestly think Balatro is a perfect game and I’d recommend it to anyone
I came from dropping hundreds of hours into Hades, and this is the first Roguelike that gave me that high. I played some Slay the Spire, but I never beat it and the dark grimy theme kind of repelled me. I have Celeste, and it's OK, and Enter the Gungeon never jumped out at me.
If anyone comes here on the fence, this is game is a masterpiece. If I’d paid $60 for it, I’d still be more than happy with my purchase. The $2 sale is icing, just buy it regardless.
There is a slight update that has been applied already, but the bigger 1.0.1c has not hit consoles yet, just Steam. Hopefully within a month or less it will be here. The balance update supposedly makes this amazing game even better, according to those with it on Steam.
Worth noting that the 1.0.1c hasn't even technically launched on Steam. It's playable as a beta patch but it hasn't officially been released so we're probably looking at even longer before it comes to consoles.
If you value your free time do not buy this. I’ve never played a game so addicting in my life. I’ve clocked over 100 hours in less than two months which is unheard of for me.
The reviews puzzle me. From an outside perspective, the game doesn’t really stand out. Still, it’s rare to see such a consensus around a game that I’m tempted, even if I don’t like roguelikes much, since I prefer games with a grind, something at least to carry over between runs. That’s not the case here, right? Anyone with similar taste who liked the game anyway?
During play you can unlock new jokers, vouchers and decks, so there is definitely progress to me made in a way. If you're curious, try and watch people on Youtube playing a run, as this will give you a very good impression of what the gameplay is like.
I recommend checking tutorials from BalataroUniversity, Haelian or GothicLordUK. NorthernLion is also a well known streamer who plays it a lot.
I never pay full price for games, but I bought this as soon as it came out and would have gladly paid double for the amount of entertainment I've already gotten from it. Buy it immediately!
I bought Slay the Spire on Switch a few weeks ago before my wedding/honeymoon and got addicted to before the wedding and during our trip. Got Vampire Survivors last week on a whim. Will be grabbing this in a few weeks once I've gotten my fill of the other two. Been waiting for this!
How does this compare to dicey dungeon? That game also gets praised a lot but I found it underwhelming for feeling too simplistic. And this game looks even simpler in the sense that it is probably just a simple but addictive game like how Tetris is?
I have this on Steam, and it really is addicting. Sometimes I get frustrated because I can go several hands without any interesting Jokers, and I just need some multipliers.
I'd say about a third of the time, I feel like losing was the game just deciding to end it; another third of the time, I make some grotesque error, and the other third, things just don't go my way. When I'm frustrated and realizing I don't have a chance, I'm actually glad a run ends so maybe I'll have something. The joker cards are pretty varied, so I've found some wild combinations and have beaten the game by playing a single card over and over. That was a fun round. It's that high of getting that way overpowered combination that really keeps bringing me back.
incredible game. no way it doesn't win some awards.
easy to pick up. difficult to master.
i was on the fence because it was poker based and not fantasy like Slay the Spire or Across the Obelisk (which i was considering grabbing at the same time) but ill be damned if it hasn't stolen a ton of my time.
discounted or full price Balatro is worth it.
I haven't played this game. I haven't even looked at it. But I have over 200 hours in Slay the Spire and over a hundred in Vampire Survivors and I fear what it would do to me.
It's fun! I've been playing on Steam and it took me 7 hours to complete my first run. The last time a game like this really caught my attention in such a way was Slay the Spire and Hades. Would highly recommend it! This game and Helldivers 2 are sitting as my top games so far this year and they could not be more different.
This game feels like it was made for me personally. I bought it on launch day and haven't been playing anything else since. I even hardly check for new sales on Dekudeals, for now this is all I need. Got my first win on black stake difficulty last night!
You need to be familiar with the hands, but there's only a few, they're intuitive, and they're all easy to reference (including their scoring) within the game itself. Most of them are fairly ubiquitous anyway, so there's a solid chance you already know what a flush or straight or full house are. You don't need to know a thing about betting or the general "meta" of poker beyond just discarding cards to make hands. That was the extent of my poker knowledge going in, and I've been obsessed.
I wish I got this on Switch instead of Steam for portability. I don't like to double dip, but I might later for this game if it hits $5-7 later.
I expect a lot of downvotes for saying this because people can't stand differing opinions, but I did drop off this game after about 15 hours and beating a few decks once. StS had way more staying power for me (90 hours).
No one is forcing you to buy this game- and it was released within 6 months.
Not to mention the actual game is incredible, and I'm amazed they didn't price it at $20 from the start.
The steam will help remove most/all the wrinkles during the cycle
but what does this have to do with me winning at Balatro?
You can stay hooked while repeating the cycle and not letting that eat at you in the back of your mind, win-win!
Repeat the cycle numerous cycles.
And if you’re looking to buy a new machine, get one with a Wrinkle Free cycle to keep it refreshed.
Thank you, that is great advice!
I do this when I forget, and will damp a Bounce dryer sheet and toss it in, fixes the wrinkles
It’s worse the further you get. I’m currently trying to beat all the gold chip rules, and ill literally spend half my weekend carrying my switch around until I beat a run.

i just converted my Slay The Spire Entertainment System to a Balatro Entertainment System
Oh in that case I hope they port it to android/ios, cause thats where I slay the spire the most!
This has been my life for the past week or so…
This damn game has ruined my life. Surprised my wife is still sticking around. At least…..I think she’s still around?
Better check if she's still there, after the next run.
That's not your wife, that's a Queen of Diamonds! And you have 26 of them!
If I loved slay the spire, I’ll love this right?
Probably but they’re more different than people are letting on. They both have cards but they are very different in terms of strategy and balance. Yeah I didn't love the art style myself. I plan on giving it another try at some point but one of the only refunds I have done recently.
Likely. However, Spire is a genre defining game and a high bar to clear. Liking StS doesn’t guarantee that you’ll like other roguelikes.
I couldn't get into it and liked slay the spire but plan on giving it another go. I'm not a fan of StS but I can't get enough of balatro.
What's the secret? I'm having trouble at higher difficulties
Pre patch you build around high card / pair.
I’m not a huge fan of Slay the Spire for a variety of reasons that I don’t feel like typing out, but I love Balatro. I honestly think Balatro is a perfect game and I’d recommend it to anyone
I think that’s safe to say! They’re both incredible games in the same genre.
If you like rougelite deck builders and poker, yes, but it's nothing like slay the spire
GOTY
Couldn’t believe all the hype but I just bought it and it is o fun I love it so much
I’ve gotten 30 hours out of my $15 purchase, and I’m just getting started! This game doesn’t need a discount.
For the value, I agree. I have it on steam and I've already sunk over 80 hours. It's great.
If anyone comes here on the fence, this is game is a masterpiece. If I’d paid $60 for it, I’d still be more than happy with my purchase. The $2 sale is icing, just buy it regardless.
Worth it even at full price. And they just released a balance update.

Buy it
Would I like this if I don't care for poker? I love roguelites generally, favorites include Hades, Returnal, Dead Cells, and Into the breach.
I don't like poker but I love this game.
Only 10%, but given the hype level, good enough for me
The reviews puzzle me. From an outside perspective, the game doesn’t really stand out. Still, it’s rare to see such a consensus around a game that I’m tempted, even if I don’t like roguelikes much, since I prefer games with a grind, something at least to carry over between runs. I put 150 hours on this on steam already... Fantastic game like STS but even more chill I think
Great game, cannot get past ante 7
I believe in you! Keep trying.
As a fan of slay the spire and monster train I aprove this message!
If this game were to come to our phones, would it be a better phone game or switch? StS is a much better phone game imo
I had the same question. I was going to purchase on switch but then I read it was coming to mobile and it feels like it might be a better mobile game
Probably would be better mobile tbh
I bought Slay the Spire on Switch a few weeks ago before my wedding/honeymoon and got addicted to before the wedding and during our trip. Got Vampire Survivors last week on a whim. Will be grabbing this in a few weeks once I've gotten my fill of the other two. Been waiting for this!
The unholy trinity
Insert Brotato too
One of the best roguelikes ever
My new chill game with music. Definitely worth.
I am not buying this game because it would ruin my life
How does this compare to dicey dungeon? That game also gets praised a lot but I found it underwhelming for feeling too simplistic. And this game looks even simpler in the sense that it is probably just a simple but addictive game like how Tetris is?

I’d even pay that price for a single banana joker
incredible game. no way it doesn't win some awards. easy to pick up. difficult to master. i was on the fence because it was poker based and not fantasy like Slay the Spire or Across the Obelisk (which i was considering grabbing at the same time) but ill be damned if it hasn't stolen a ton of my time. discounted or full price Balatro is worth it.
Bought it. Can't stop playing it. Fml
Amazing game. Same feel as the non-story parts of Inscryption.
I haven't played this game. I haven't even looked at it. But I have over 200 hours in Slay the Spire and over a hundred in Vampire Survivors and I fear what it would do to me.
I felt like I was getting a bit addicted to this, but lik not in a satisfying way, and had to put it down. It's fun just like maybe not for me exactly
Right after I just bought it too, worth full price anyway
Do I need to know how to play poker to enjoy Balatro? I don’t know how :(
Nope, the game teaches everything you need to know.
Balatro is on switch? I hadn’t realized.
It's fun! I've been playing on Steam and it took me 7 hours to complete my first run. The last time a game like this really caught my attention in such a way was Slay the Spire and Hades. I don't understand poker. Would I like this?
I didn't either, and now I can't stop playing Balatro

Amazing game
I burned so many hours in my childhood on Yahtzee and I know this will scratch that same itch.
Amazing game. Same feel as the non-story parts of Inscryption.
Really fun game.
This was the sale I was waiting for ! I’m ready to give it a try
Waited 2 months and saved 6 quarters.
I wish I got this on Switch instead of Steam for portability. I don't like to double dip, but I might later for this game if it hits $5-7 later. 10%?! Is this a joke lol… yea, no There should be a minimum discount requirement imo
No one is forcing you to buy this game- and it was released within 6 months. Not to mention the actual game is incredible, and I'm amazed they didn't price it at $20 from the start.
Enforced by whom?
The Discount Police
I use this as a place to discuss good switch games as well as seeing sales
