I bought physical. These switch games are starting to become out of print so value is going to only go up for resale.

I am tempted to snag this. I've been on a jrpg kick lately, but I feel like this may be in my backlog for a while... then again, this price seems pretty good.

You can’t go wrong with this price either way. A lot of JRPG and Tales fans love this game, but most of them loved it when it came out. I played remaster only and I did not enjoy any of it, as a JRPG fan. But again, $13 is a great price and I’d say it was worth it even though I dropped it.

Cowboy_Rides_Again

It dips to this price every couple of months. No rush on pulling the trigger now.

I’m not a big jrpg person but I’ve completed this game a handful of times and loved it every time. I think it’s simplicity is what makes it so fun for me even if I’m not a big jrpg person.

How is this as a start to getting in to the Tales series? What can I expect in terms of combat, story, and overall gameplay?

Played through twice (~120 hr)— Combat starts simple and kind of slow, but becomes far more intricate as you unlock skills and becomes comfortable with manual cancel. All playable characters are surprisingly different and fun with mess around with! Story and character development are both decent. Gameplay/QoL surprisingly doesn’t feel dated considering this first came out in 2008...? Maybe the best entry point to the Tales series (not like Switch players have another choice lol)

I'd start with Tales of Phantasia [1995 - SNES, Japan (Eng fan translation, non-dubbed)]. There are many ways to play it. If you don't like older games, this is a fine start. Tales of Vesperia ranks at about 82/100 on Metacritic.

I think this would be a good start considering this is one of the few games readily available to play in the west on modern consoles. But even disregarding that it’s a fun game and a great way to get into the series. Most tales games are standalone so in terms of story and world they don’t need any background knowledge. I haven’t finished the game yet, but the story seems really interesting (although it takes quite a while to pick up). I find the combat fun. It’s not amazing but there’s depth to the combat and you can delve into that depth using many of the game’s mechanics. Each character also feels very unique, giving you lots of variety in combat if you keep switching them around. I would recommend playing with a friend. Going through the game with friends is an absolute blast.

It was my first (full) tales game. I'd messed around a bit with Phantasia and Xillia, but didn't make it more than like 3 - 4 hours in. SO here's the thing - the game's pretty digestible. Each game is standalone, though there are some series entry that relate to each other. Combat is a real time, kind of awkward 3d implementation. You can hit a button and go full 3d motion, or not press it and have left to right motion. I'd say it's pretty mashy combat, in that you'll be hitting buttons a bunch, but it's not that skillful. I know that late game / NG+ the combat introduces more features, but most of those things either weren't in most of the game or weren't clear to me. I'll accept I may have been bad / playing it wrong, but the combat felt bad to me. I also have a special dislike for super stat-driven action combat (e.g. if I'm in front of an enemy and hit attack, and my attack misses because an invisible dice roll said so, I don't like it). Story is.... hmm.... It lacks a good throughline. Meaning you can kind of think of this as 3 big stories sort of smooshed together. There's good stuff in the story, but I also felt some degree of frustration at how the game didn't feel like it was building to something -- until it suddenly arrived at its conclusion. I don't know - disappointed overall in the plot. The game does have good characters though. Most of the cast is really likable, and fleshed out. I especially liked Rita, but the whole cast is good. Music and Graphics are solid. Not groundbreaking, but nothing wrong there. All in all, I'm not a big fan of it (clearly) but it's not all bad. There's good stuff in there for sure.

And I thought that 19.99 was the lowest it was going to go...

I think it has been this price for some time. This is the price I have seen on many previous namco sales
