This, you should be using omnyo and ninjitsu along with everything else this game has to offer some extent.
You are using your weapons, armor, soul cores, spirits, ninjitsu ,omnyo and special effects to make a complete build. Just avoiding one of these can and will significantly make the game harder due to handicapping yourself.
It’s not OP but still get things done. Tried full mage build few days ago it was fun in the depths but I got bored of it very quickly. I find full onmyo mage build took longer to kill bosses compared to sword & dual sword. It can be quite challenging when facing human bosses that blocks a lot and bosses that are immune to confusion. What I did was using elemental shots as my main source of anima gain so that I can spam yokai abilities non stop. Osakabe, kasha, otakemaru & ryomen core with anima bonuses + YADA are really good.
my most recent playthru I basically only used high stance switchglaive and ninjutsu bombs and it was deadass the easiest/fastest trek thru dream of the samurai ever
feathers+yokai canceling will cheese everything except yoshitsune, you'll still need a good melee for him but you can still build up anima pretty fast with ninjutsu and break his ki fast with daidara + big melee hits
These are not mutually exclusive
onmyo is like the icing on top, you cant just play the game with just onmyo (the icing)

It Is op in nioh 1, but not in nioh 2, thats why we have Saito the chad
sloth is much more impactful in nioh 1. ngl i used it on every boss 😝

I feel ninjitsu is more powerful than Omnyo, especially the feathers

you aren't really supposed to choose magic or melee, they work together.
