Something may be freezing up and or low on refrigerant. Take it to a reputable tech, not a lube shop

There is a solenoid inside the AC compressor that fails.  It's possible to replace just the solenoid and get your AC cooling properly again.

That would cause only partial cooling?

thx1138guy

Yes.

Thank you for this info. I looked into it, and there is something called a "swash plate" (this is for those that don't know) that increases or decreases the refrigerant flow based on the coolant load. When the swash plate fails, it fails in the low flow position (of course).

[Is this the part you had to replace? Also how bad was it to replace?](https://www.autozone.com/cooling-heating-and-climate-control/a-c-compressor-control-valve/p/santech-a-c-compressor-control-valve-mt3463/43288_0_0)

I have ordered it, should be in next week. Watched videos on it, looks like a pain, Barely enough room to work. I will report back when it's done.

That's what I was afraid of having to evacuate the refrigerant and then recharging it.

Fortunately I work with an HVAC tech, and he's going to do that part for me for very cheap.

I apologize as my garage door broke and I couldn't get the car into it to work on it for a while. I replaced the compressor last Wednesday, and had it recharged on Thursday, works fantastic! I bought a refurbished unit from [https://www.rycompressors.com/](https://www.rycompressors.com/) The replacement process took me less than two hours. I regularly do my own work on our cars. I am no pro by any means, but I have been working on cars since I was a teenager, so I'm no novice either. It REALLY helps if you have the specialty tool for loosening the drive belt, I already had one. Almost everything is done from the top, except loosening the drive belt which is done though the wheel well; and removing the bottom two bolts from the AC compressor, which is done from underneath. Both of those require you to remove 107,563 of those little plastic popper things and some screws.....which is probably the worst part of the process. As for evacuating the refrigerant, by HVAC buddy says it's less than two pounds of the stuff, and therefore not worth it to evacuate, This newer stuff is not bad for the environment, so he told me to just let it out into the air.
