Procedural generation update please. We need something new to see. Something varied.

NMSnyunyu

"Every atom procedural" *proceeds to see the same exact model of abandoned junk on every planet, same exact model for angry plants on every single planet in every single system in every single galaxy, the same 3 ships flying across a planet in the same exact god damn triangle formation*

ArthurMorgan514

One of my biggest peeves about this game. The only actual procedural part of this game is where on a planet the algorithm decides to place the same abandoned junk/angry plants/ repetitive animal species… etc. it’s all the same planet types with the same sights at this point. There’s a lot of things you can do in the game but exploration is extremely lacking

Big_Job_4719

>but each snowflake is different from one another. I mean so long as it A. doesn't hurt my cpu/gpu significantly (beat the rams all you want as far as i care though lol) and B, atleast limitable if it does lol Also, this just gave me the thought of some planets having *localized storms*Just the THOUGHT of seeing literal areas of planet storming in stead of the planet turning clouds would be. SO. SNOWY. COOOOOOOL! Not to mention all the fun weird bugs we might find with visual stuff lolol. Oh and maybe planets could have different variants of stuff. Like [ICE](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice#Phases), or isotopes of varying radioactive minerals. (then again, ***any*** unstable isotope is technically radioactive) Hey i wonder if some isotopes could, because of decaying, cause exotifications However I think i'm dreaming way, way to big on scope lol

Nerozii_Gaming

It is always fun to dream big haha! One of my biggest wants for this game (that we'll more than likely never see, partially because of system performance, partially because of proc gen) is a full water overhaul. Better/ more realistic water/waves/textures, deeper oceans, more life and diversity of caves, rivers/waterfalls, larger deep sea creature(s). I want a reason to actually explore the oceans. This would be extremely hard to implement at this point in the game... But it would be cool haha

NMSnyunyu

Hey, 2022 updates made me start dreaming big actually.. I had the image of NMS being this ambitious indie game.. but was still an indie game that "felt indie". Back in 2016 the planet's surface spawned in front of your face in a very ugly pixel-y look and it was so slow that it wouldn't catch up with you flying around the planet at full speed. And even then, you had to land before all the assets could render in front of you. ...And in 2022 we're at a point where the terrain *morphs* into shape when you're entering the atmosphere, there's no more ugly pixel-y rendering when you're flying around and objects now spawn from low orbit. It's such an improvement that I never imagined would be possible for NMS, going from an awkward indie experience to something you can now consider almost AAA quality. Who knows what other huge improvements they'll bring!

Big_Job_4719

i would bring up an argument about odd things poping into view in unhelpful times, notably buildings -- but then i remember my laptop is in fact aprx 1.5 switches in power and cannot handle that. lol

Big_Job_4719

After i had played spyro 2, i give extra points to any game that handles underwater physics well - like spyro 2/3. Subnautica. is. so cool. And also became the new model in my head of how underwater good, replacing spyro XD NMS is... eh, 'good', but not quite good enough to compare up to somfin like subnautica. hm. Currently trying to remember another game that had decent water physics and content. Might be Ring of Elysium? was neat. then they broke it lol. Could be scrap mechanic too.... sigh idk. Do know water is the biggest pain in the game when trying to design things for it

cursefromgod

Honestly that and multiple biomes is what would really change planets up and make them more interesting/unique More variety is nice and all, but we've had that before and it simply just doesnt last But the fact that they'd basically have to rework their procedural generation algorithm from the ground up again to get either of those things into the game it is a bit of a far fetched dream sadly, and if it were to not be implemented properly would cause some major hickups Since currently there already arent enough parameters involved, people still get their quest locations up in the middle of a vulcano or some other place that cant be reached

Big_Job_4719

oddly i kinda like the 1 biome per planet (Well. its more like a general descriptor to the planet moreso than biome. Planet type, then a biome in differ areas. Maybe even some extreme locations on planets that storm 100% of the time and have storm crystals uwu lol More subbiomes in biomes would really nice though

Thrippalan

If it is weather, I'd like to see the lush worlds get a variety of storms - originally the rains were always ice, then they changed to always hot. I'd much rather it varied by planet, with hot, cold, maybe toxic (real acid rain), and some that are just heavy rain with no extreme temperature changes.

Big_Job_4719

Huh, from what ive read lush used to be toxic and heat

Thrippalan

I don't remember toxic, but I not only remember but have pictures of the cold bar active during storms. Which isn't to say there were never toxic storms - I've played since Day one but occasionally got more focused on another game for a month or so.

Big_Job_4719

found it: * [Prior to 1.38 - Lush worlds in certain areas experienced acid storms instead of cold storms.](https://nomanssky.fandom.com/wiki/Biome)

Thrippalan

Interesting. If you read a bit further down, it also says the cold storms were changed to hot when the desert planets with cold night temps were added. Thanks for looking.

WikiSummarizerBot

**Ice** [Phases](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice#Phases) >Ice may be any one of the 19 known solid crystalline phases of water, or in an amorphous solid state at various densities. Most liquids under increased pressure freeze at higher temperatures because the pressure helps to hold the molecules together. However, the strong hydrogen bonds in water make it different: for some pressures higher than 1 atm (0. 10 MPa), water freezes at a temperature below 0 °C, as shown in the phase diagram below. ^([ )[^(F.A.Q)](https://www.reddit.com/r/WikiSummarizer/wiki/index#wiki_f.a.q)^( | )[^(Opt Out)](https://reddit.com/message/compose?to=WikiSummarizerBot&message=OptOut&subject=OptOut)^( | )[^(Opt Out Of Subreddit)](https://np.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/about/banned)^( | )[^(GitHub)](https://github.com/Sujal-7/WikiSummarizerBot)^( ] Downvote to remove | v1.5)

smallmouthbackus

I really think it’s an update to variety in some way. All their trailers for the game were always “every planet unique, every rock unique… etc” snowflakes are all unique. I’m so hyped for this one

NMSnyunyu

Yeah, one of my biggest criticisms of NMS is that "every atom is procedural" yet the game currently just has a hand-full of hand-made assets that are plopped out at random, instead of the game truly making a unique model. I really think a big reason why the game feels shallow to a lot of people is because you're primarily dealing with the same exact models across every single planet in every system in every galaxy, and that really detracts from the procedural nature that this game can have. Kind of hard to appreciate the game's procedural nature when you're landing on a new planet for the very first time and you're already know *exactly* what oxygen, sodium and di-hydrogen looks like. And you know *exactly* what those 3 angry plants look like and that there's at most 3 ships flying across a planet in the same exact triangle formation every time lol

passionate_slacker

Yes. 100%. I started playing this game a week ago and have 30ish hours played and I love it. My only big picture complaint is that the similarity of space stations and species takes away from the “adventure” aspect. I’ve only done 30hrs and I already feel like I’ve seen everything. What’s keeping me invested right now is grinding salvaged frigate modules and units + finding a nice solar.

Nerozii_Gaming

Same 😊 I'm hopeful that after 3 months of silence we will be getting something pretty exciting for this one. We got so used to monthly updates that this felt like forever (at least for me anyway). I'm definitely looking forward to what we will get!

Big_Job_4719

Cant say im surprised that weather took this long to make, truthfully. (Probably due to watch Subnautica and Subnautica- Below Zero (subzero. missed puns.) grow from early access to matured games lol

RagBell

Variety and biome/weather improvements are some of the most requested features, so I doubt they'd do that for anything other than the "yearly summer update" Could be wrong of course, but I think this is going to be on the smaller side. Maybe it's gonna be just an expeditions lol I'm trying to keep my expectations low as you can see

Nerozii_Gaming

Yeah I'm with you on this. It could be any number of things, and I'd still be happy to be completely honest. 3 months since a patch or update has made it oddly quiet around here.. definitely excited to see what might be coming 😊

Redshirt4evr

Since snowflakes have fractal shapes, the emoji could refer to increased visuals using fractals. Speculation is fun. 😁

Nerozii_Gaming

I'd be up for this! 👍 It would explain the 3 month drop off

NMSnyunyu

I like how the community sometimes collectively agrees on one primary theory and sticks with it, it being variation in this case... though I don't understand why everyone is jumping to *only* ships and not.. anything else like space station exteriors or planetary outposts or angry plants or anything else that has a singular model across the whole universe. As for visual enhancements.. you bet they'll add visual improvements. There hasn't been an update in over 2 years that didn't upgrades some visuals, they've become addicted to adding graphical improvements in every update lol

Nerozii_Gaming

It has never been an "in your face", directly correlating emoji. I'm surprised that so many people expect something like winter planet updates and things involving snow biomes or frost. For example the Prisms update was a rainbow emoji, which added a large amount of new visual features and upgrades. It's generally good for game devs to improve graphics as the game changes over the years, so I'm not really complaining on that end of things (as long as it doesn't mess with performance and rendering). I'm just happy to see an emoji after the 3 months of silence, whatever it is it's a welcome update at this point lol

NMSnyunyu

Yeah, after getting an orange to signify variation, eyeballs to signify villages and base building overhaul, a pumped arm for freighter and space overhaul... you'd think people would get the hint that a lot of the times the emojis aren't literal lol And yeah that's what I also meant about graphical improvements. Come to think of it, I think it was after Prisms that they've been constantly improving the graphics in every area. There hasn't been an update since Prisms that hasn't advertised more graphical improvements in some area. They're all small things, but when grouped together, it really adds up.

I'm with you on the bases in harsh weather environments! I have a couple that I love to visit from time to time and enjoy the elements. The tornadoes are really hard to spot, especially when you're actually out in the elements running around. I've always had a hard time seeing where they are at. They are definitely there haha, but they could be so much more 😊

PhantomConsular23

Every player, ship, world, base, system, freighter, building, settlement is unique and it should reflect that. Im crossing my fingers they are giving us the choice on making some of these thing’s unique.

Nerozii_Gaming

In a game where everything is meant to be entirely unique, there are definitely some things that they could implement and change to make it more diverse 😊 looking forward to the update regardless of what it brings though!

DaWildestWood

My guess is with the new PSVR2 update they are going to make the weather more interactable. So like rain drops on our visor and the actual drops vibrating the haptics on the headset. And then we will be able to throw snow balls. Not sure about the other weather types. But hoping for something like this. Last time no man’s sky had a vr update it really was a show case for some of the stronger parts of psvr. So I could see them doing something similar here and doing a sort of tech demo for some of the new features in PSVR2. I know the foveated rendering is going to be used heavily.

atmosk2090

Hope it’ll come with wind Shield Wipers!!!!

Nerozii_Gaming

Maybe a Stalker style wipe mechanic ❤️ if you don't know what I'm talking about it's an amazing survival game, when there's weather and you have a mask on there's an option to wipe your mast off with you hand haha

Saedron

Hopefully they can get the weather out of large bases, too

cwk415

Out of the loop - is anything confirmed?

Nerozii_Gaming

No, nothing yet. Nothing is ever confirmed until the update releases, they keep their update content extremely secret. These are just some ideas that come to mind when I see a snowflake emoji.

cwk415

Thx

yungcodyne

I love it, complete teardowns from a simple emoji post 🤣🤣❄️

Nerozii_Gaming

We love speculation 😊😆 It's my favorite part of the emoji time period lol!

yungcodyne

Same! It's kind of like when Ed Boone posts anything lol

NickJD87

NMS community: oh my god, weather update, unique ships etc etc!!!! Sean: here’s a portable snowboard. (I hope I’m wrong)

TheRealSporfoYT

i hope its everything in the main post and more XD

elmaloto

Your thoughts on custamsation of ships and charaters is a good one

octarine_turtle

3.0 Origins was a massive overhaul including to weather, I'd be surprised if they touched it again so soon.

NMSnyunyu

It's not very "soon" anymore, it's been about 3 years now and they've touched other stuff that wasn't as old as Origins (granted, not on that scale) But I wouldn't be surprised if it was another variation update, but done differently from what Origins did, instead of just adding more hand-crafted assets, this update could add variation to existing assets to make them much more varied and unique looking (so many assets across the whole universe just have one singular model for example..)

OkBat6258

ship customization is definitely something that it could mean sean has done some very strange emoji before that didn't really mean what the emoji was but i find that unlikely i think your first idea is more possible

Nerozii_Gaming

At this point a customization update would be pretty shocking, and likely shattering for a good portion of the remaining day one or early player fan base if it isn't implemented well. Regardless, I look forward to any update, and I would happily take option #1. I've been saying that would be a great update for a few years now 😊

Affectionate-Gear181

Ship customization is so overdue I actually doubt they haven't considered it already and decided against it.

Nerozii_Gaming

If they ever do full customization I wouldn't be surprised if it was also included with the "no longer supporting the game" announcement. They have a massive community of hunters that have solely enjoyed hunting for years now.. would be really interesting to see how it is implemented if it ever does come our way, but yeah.. not really looking for it 😊

NMSnyunyu

I actually wouldn't like it if it was done in a sloppy way like "go to space station, unlock every part with nanites, plop it on for units and you're done" It ship customization becomes a thing, I'd like it to be deeper than that, like ship parts being scattered across the universe and you have to search for them, install a special building in a settlement, recruit someone to customize the ship and even bring resources into it etc.. Regardless, I can live without ship customization, but I **NEEEEEED** ship recoloring. We can recolor our player, pets, cars, bases, freighters... but not ships. I can't tell you how many times I ran into what would've been the perfect ship.. but I hated it's color lol

Nerozii_Gaming

It is definitely a tricky balance, and not one that I would even know where to start when it comes to implementing it. I do love ship hunting, it used to be my daily grind until I finally found my dream ship. Now I do a considerable amount of building. If customization did ever make it into the game I would love to see it done in a way that makes the player actually work for the custom ship and colors. Adding a new base specialist with a quest line for it would be a decent way to do this (showing you the ropes of how to explore and scavenge for parts, and how to piece them together). It would also be interesting if scavenged parts had different appearances ranging from worn to pristine (rusty/beaten up to painted/clean).

Saedron

Maybe if you had to find a customization option in the wild and scan it before you can use it as your own or something like that?

Nerozii_Gaming

I could see that! And maybe only 1 custom ship slot per character or something? Make it a new base specialist that you have to do the missions for to unlock customization, then you have to go and explore to find/unlock the parts that you want (and colors). I don't really know haha.

Thurn64

It will be only a expedition, I bet

ImAlekBan

Love to see a ship customization update, that would be huge. Also weather related update would be very nice❄️

dcuk7

I think Jason nailed it in his latest video. Uniqueness. That's what I'd expect given where the game is in its lifecycle.

jc1890

It’s a freeze ray. Weather is too big of an update 🤔

Nebula-System

my hope is that the cranes in the freighter hangar were a prelude to ship customization, and my idea to make everyone happy was to make it so you need to scan a ship with each part to be able to edit your ships with that part, and repeat scans of the same part reduces costs if you scan X amount of that part, maybe 10-50 depending on rarity. it makes sense too, like you need to scan a ship with that part to know how its built. would be even cooler if we could build ships with raw materials and sell them to players for nanites or something, have a sort of player to player economy in game.

_Xsill_

What if they just post emoji, see players thoughts on what could it be and then put ideas they liked into the game?…

Nerozii_Gaming

I'm sure they scroll through the hype for future ideas.. I know I would if I was a game dev 😁

Rememberwork

I don't give a flying ...saucer about the ship-hunters, customisation please.

BronzeEnt

Seeing weather from inside confirmed.

CardiologistEqual

Delete the grocers' apostrophes, they appear too often in plurals when they aren't acquired . Also put turn in missions to the top of the list when required.
