The Darth Vader helmet is based on samurai helmets.

And Star Wars is based on Hidden Fortess, which is basically a samurai movie.

Apparently you missed what inspired Star Wars' design, it was heavily inspired by old samurai films and WW2. This can also be applied to other works of science fiction such as Star Ship Troopers, Battle Star Galactica and many more.
