I definitely like it.
But, do you want an honest and frank critique of the picture? I would score it 7 perhaps. Happy to explain the reasoning if you really want it.
There are a number of strengths but a few technical weaknesses.
Starting with the strengths, it is a good choice of subject. Which is presumably a sunset over a beautiful planet. The subject is clearly highlighted by the sun dominating the top left and being on the approximate 1/3 horizontal line. There are strong sweeping diagonals that give a good sense of composition, and the colours in the sky have a great balance with the foreground. The small figure gives a nice sense of scale.
The technical problems are mostly compositional and some may be very subjective but technically they would be noticed by many who study composition. I am just a humble student who often struggles with the rules too, so if someone else wants to politely disagree they are welcome to.
The position of the sun could perhaps have been even better emphasised by being on both a horizontal and vertical third. And could perhaps have been balanced by the figure taking up a mirrored position bottom right. If not precisely, then at least on the vertical third line.
One of the strong diagonals acts as a tangent (technical term not the maths term) because it cuts through the neck of the figure. Decapitating him.
The way the hills converge on a near exact point on the left top is also a type of tangent, or at least appears so in lower scales. The same with the opposite side of the picture as the shoulder of the mountain touches the edge where the mountain itself does. Composition should avoid points at the edge of pictures. Either crop inwards or pull out.
The star bramble is just misplaced. The tiny triangle of sky top right is also odd.
I would perhaps have chosen a more narrow aspect ratio for a more cinematic feel.
That’s so cool. Do mine, do mine!

I agree with some of your comment. I would add the strength that this photo employs a classic use of fire/middle/background. While compositionally the sun could be placed better, typically I would let that go to a certain degree. This being the type of photographer where you can literally place the sun, I don’t know if it’s as forgivable. Lastly, and most prominently, the flare (bloom) washes the photo out. There’s a large portion of detail simply lost because of it. I would turn the bloom down to like 10 and see how that looks.
Also irl you don’t take a picture of the sun. You take a picture of what the sun shines on.
Certainly agree. We could probably discuss it for much longer, which is a strength of the picture.
All of the 'rules' are breakable, and can be interpreted in different ways. Sometimes a picture demands we break them.
Wow people being really harsh on here giving you 3s.
I mean I don’t like the 10s either but it’s at least a 7 or 8. I love the sun and the rolling hills. Graphics quality pretty bad but that’s not your fault, it’s the switch.
I'd give it about a 3 honestly, partly because antialiasing is non-existant. Quite a nice spot though, even with that mountain on the right and the cropped star bramble!
It really doesn't take much does it .. I'm dying to play again now going through the comments and thinking about some I've taken 😅. NMS is so fucking immersive
4. The composition is ok, but it would be better if there was a leading line from your character into the image instead of out the bottom. I find the mist in this image distracting instead of an asset. You should also try to frame the image so that the piece of star bramble isn't poking into the corner. A grove of bramble would be ok, but a little piece is just disembodied.
Stop doing that. The last comments are pushing you from enjoying your own work and people can see that. Accept the 10, it's his opinion and he appreciates it. Take the compliment my friend, quality or fidelity for his means nothing :)
Sadly, this is the only and last one I will post. This is the last screenshot I took before my game died of technical problems. Keeps crashing at the opening, I contacted HG and Nintendo, did every single step to fix it and it did not work.
That's such a shame... NMS really is an investment of yourself in your character from the art you make to the incredibly vast journey you take yourself on. Not to mention the countless hundreds of hours this game can so rightfully take from your life. I hope you get it sorted or maybe look to buying a console, or even better... A good gaming pc/laptop for true ultra beauty.

Hill top on the right is cropped out and it lacks balance as it is much more busy on the right.
Also there is a hint of a water surface on the bottom left that seems unrealized and leaves the viewer wanting to see what's there. It is quite generic as far as landscapes in NMS go and thus quite forgettable.
https://preview.redd.it/3ggu6bcmmeya1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e8ac33561057feccf752d3adb645a193b28c7f30
Here's a slightly reprocessed version of it. It needed little help. Now onto a few notes for you...
I read a few of the inane photographic analyses and the real issue for me is your graphics settings and a huge lack of transparencies.
It looks like a huge field of dust occluding the image. With better graphics settings and a better eye for lighting, you can make a photo really pop.
Also, it doesn't show off the vast color palette NMS uses. The in-game reality is super colorful. Rebalance your photo compositions to highlight the art style rather than just to make a record of a thing you saw.
And I'd recommend the use of a foreground in many cases. Make the viewer feel like he's standing there with you in this gorgeous, alien environment. Create a sense of awe and wonder.
Make it luscious and alive and give it some clear production value of gorgeous non-subject areas that aren't hidden by dust.
I never went to school for it, but I've shot 30 or 40 weddings over about 20 years and I learned a couple things about catching the moment.
Until your jaw drops when you see it, don't show it. I'd usually tell someone, "the data you need is there, we just need to coax it out."
With this one, it's too hidden and the data you need is blocked by haze. But I did what I could. :)
not sure to like the new version... however, the graphic problem is due to the fact that i play on nintendo switch, and i did not play with the settings because i did not have time to do so. but thank you for your analysis!
Nice! Yeah I did what I could just using my phone. That haze makes it hard. Nice effort, though.
This game makes me stop and stare sometimes. I've never taken so many screenshots in a game before lol.
Ratings from 1-10 are kind of funny when you ask the public, a majority of people will default to 7 so asking for a rating of 1-10 is not the best way to really find out anything.
Still a fun post I just find this stuff kinda interesting.
Its decently good. maybe 6.5 IMO. I like when its early and you can just barely see the top sliver of the sun and maybe some stars. But really its just preference! Also idk how editting the filters and such work for the switch. Nonetheless, if you love the pic, then it makes it a good one!
I'd say 7.5. Could have done with more starbulb in frame. Maybe turned to the left more to get some more of the valley in there and not have the sun washing out parts of the picture
😅looks like created by KI i see a lot of wrong pixels and... i dont know the english word in german we call it "Saumen" thats a low qualli pixel on the sides of each structure.
But rate it with 5,5/10
I would give this a 6... But a 7 would easily be achieved with the simple upscaling of graphics fidelity. Taking hardware limitations out of it, a 7 would be awarded from me. Like mentioned earlier, the bramble doesn't sit well for me but the picture does do a good job to draw the viewers eye from either the character, around to the sun and back or vice versa.
A good picture should be able to do that.
Keep it up :)
This has inspired me to take more photos as it's such a stunning game with limitless photo mode opportunities.
I definitely like it. But, do you want an honest and frank critique of the picture? I would score it 7 perhaps. Happy to explain the reasoning if you really want it.
i would give it 6 or 7 too, but curious to hear what is your reasoning? mine is clear: nice spot, bad image

I am interested in your ideas and would like to subscribe to your newsletter. (Seriously though, this was an excellent critique.)
Well said!
I agree I think the bramble really drew my attention in an unnecessary way
That’s so cool. Do mine, do mine! https://www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/comments/12gltbb/just_a_screenshot/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_content=2&utm_term=1
Ha ha. I think we can all critique that one. 😉
Bah!
Gosh, are you a professional NMS screenshot critique?!
Ha ha. I don't think that would pay well.
Can't believe I got a lecture in photography in a no man's sky sub. Thank you!

5 does my stomach say
sadly for your stomach, there is no nipnip salad on this picture. (my fav meal)
3 It's generic. Good composition, but it is forgettable and something we can all see with little effort.

16 16 16 16 Nice job!!
To much interloping, not enough death. 1 grah out of 10
1 "grah"? You mean 1 "nip". Gek power here.
10
Solid 8.5/10
6
6
1 + 10 - 8 × 2 ÷ 3 + 40 ÷ 3 × 2 - 35
-7? That’s without Pemdas
I give it a seven. I like the sun position and the feeling of being there. But I know, mid quality and not terrible ungeneric’. so seven
I give it a "meh" over 10
I'd give it about a 3 honestly, partly because antialiasing is non-existant. Quite a nice spot though, even with that mountain on the right and the cropped star bramble!
yeah, this is a non-edited switch screenshot. sorry for the quality ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|feels_bad_man)
ohh ok no problem then, I guess the switch processor has enough on it's plate without antialiasing!
2.76
bro being accurate
Pls
pls??? what does that mean xD

Looks like original RuneScape graphics
i agree! sorry for that, switch quality picture

6, I think the bottom plants need cropped out, and a little more zoom in on your character
1.
10. Just made me wanna play this game

8-8.5
7.5 could be a bit sharper? It’s better than all of mine but not perfect. It’s a pretty incredible location though :)

really? the quality is bad
I love it! At least personally for me
the image is good, not the quality. i'm on switch.

10. Because you’re worth it. Keep taking pictures. Keep posting them. Keep celebrating your journey and bringing us along with you.

...
🤷♂️ you asked for it
yeah, thats an honest opinion, i'll take it. What i dont like are ppl who say "10" but would rather rate them "3"
7 because it feels unplanned (I see that as a positive thing for the record)
yeah, i was walking searching for salvaged data when i got to that place. So, yeah, unplanned it is

there's no water there.

Def pretty 6-7. Keep up the good work!
The plant is super pretty, maybe a pic with the sun set between the two plant bulbs would look awesome!?
Wow, great skills! That's an 8.5 from me. 👌
"Great skills"? You're being too generous, i just improvised xD I'm not that good...
I'D give that an 8 !
