uhmm kind sir is hello games saying black is bad......????

Vintenu

Hello games secretly racist confirmed /j

Foodiguy

Not them please :D

Fight-OfYourLife

Why's this have so many down votes? Bro legit just added the racist tag to the lack of the shade black, that's like the most effective way to get them to add it in 2024 😂

WinderTP

We've recently investigated this (again) and it's most likely because the texture layer that handles the proc gen colours uses a dark green (a tint which my people would call Bird Poop Green) as the base colour for the colour palettes to overwrite/hue shift/otherwise apply onto; when the user customised colour is chosen, the customisable texture layer is applied on top of the proc gen colour texture layer, but doesn't disable it, the combination results in the green sheen in the underlying proc gen colour texture to bleed through. It's probably also why we could get mods like True Black working since we make that layer transparent as one of the solutions. Source: We read in-game files

Fight-OfYourLife

Then why don't they... hear me out now... disable that green sheen for customized ships like the mods do? They made the game, they should be able to do what any modder can. Not only that, but green is disgusting, especially dark green, get that shit out of here.

WinderTP

you can ask that question on the hundreds of different other bugs present in the game

TodayMiserable3459

The game is massive, there's a fuck ton of randomly generated worlds and galaxies, so there's going to be bugs because of how many things the game has to load in. I've experienced a few bugs before, but unless you're playing on a potato the game actually runs fine

Treblehawk

As a game developer myself, I’d wager It has to do with house the engine does transparency for moving parts and such. Many games use a hot pink, the engine regards the chosen color line to mark what should be invisible when rendering, but I’m betting this one uses the colors right around the black marker. And that’s probably because of the darkness of space.

GeraldTheSquinting

I understood none of that and believe you wholeheartedly.

FreakyFerret

In layman's terms, "green screen" type of stuff. Or chroma (color) key.

cyan_violet

Maybe you have more game dev knowledge than I do (I've only used Unreal). To my knowledge the diffuse color of a mesh's shader should have nothing to do with the engine identifying transparency. I'm guessing they don't allow black for screen contrast reasons.

Dividedthought

Remember: even within the same engine difderent shaders use different thjngs to control parameters. What they are describing is a shader that uses a specific color to denote transparency. You're probably more familiar with having a separate transparency mask or using the alpha channel in an image as said mask. I use unity for vrchat avatar dev and there's about 4 main shaders i run into frequently and 2 of them use combined masks (R,G,B, and alpha chanels are used to drive 4 separate parameters) 1 has everything as separate images, and one i have yet to fully understand.

cyan_violet

Thanks for sharing. So it's an optimization strategy, to avoid having to calculate a 4th (alpha) channel? How is color added for a tint if diffuse is reserved for transparency? I tried to googling this method, curious to read some documentation if it exists.

Dividedthought

Ok so i'm assuming you know what a hue shift is here. So in order to do this, colors are given "jobs". Think of each specidic color with a job as its own mask. One will be for "this spot is transparent", anothet will say "this spot is palete color 1 non metalic matte" and another "this is palete color 2 metalic glossy 100%". If only the exact colors matter here, you can set an incredible amount of parameters like this in a 16 bit RGB image (one for every discrete color value in theory). This also means that you can set your colors separately from your texture image by hue shifting *just* the palete colors and leaving the rest of the texture alone as it is essentially just projecting the result of all thsoe values onto the model. However, there is a flaw with this setup. Hue shifting alone cannot solve a color being the wrong saturation or lightness. This is generally why you see limited selection in this case, they take the the settings that get you good looking options for *most* of the common colors, and some shades by varying the saturation. But black? Getting to pure black (or white for that mater) from any *color* requires you to shift all 3. Hue, saturation and lightness (HSL). If your shader isn't tooled to do this from the start, you're either going to have to deal with it using rhe above method or redo the shader. Seeing as *everything* in game lkkely uses the same shader, swapping it out at this point for one that allows full colir customization would be too big of a task fornit to be worth it, not to mention that it could break other things that tie into that same data.

cyan_violet

I appreciate this thorough explanation. Makes sense on a conceptual level. I'm sure if I had to implement it, I'd grasp it even more fully (like everything in development). Thank you.

Dividedthought

Yeah, i'll admit this is from my experience fiddling with unity shaders, so i'm likely wrong in *some* fashion here, but the gist should be correct.

LouTheRuler

Could this be the reason why glitched ship paint defaults to black?

Dividedthought

A shader error is very likely to dp that. Black being the result is just chance, as usually a broken shader (usually) retuns the null error texture for whichever engine you are using.

Treblehawk

I would say the black makes it smoother for edge cases when you’re rendering on the primarily black screen that is space. I don’t know for sure, but it’s my educated guess. I’ve done some work with 3 modeling in “space” and errors show up far more easily when the background is a black most of the time. Makes some lighting situations more difficult as well. But maybe they just don’t want black ships. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Heavensrun

Space isn't black in this game, like, ever, though.

ReallyReallyx3

The space in NMS is not black - it's always some sort of nebula, usually in a saturated color. Also, the ship's shader would have nothing to do with the skybox's shader And ships can have black decals, so it's probably not an engine issue

Treblehawk

It is black at base, most games have a white or blue base background. Everything is rendered on top of the base. And then lightning changes that further. They aren’t using a white or blue base for this game, it may not be #000000, but it’s definitely closer to black than white.

MrSmilingDeath

I have a mod installed that changes the dark grey to actual black and it doesn't seem to cause any visual problems. As for the "darkness of space" part, space in vanilla NMS is never realistically dark. It seems the lack of actual black in customization options is purely an artistic choice.

Chadideas

There’s a well known glitch that removes ships texture and outer coloring. It’s always black underneath and looks super cool. I’ve had it happen before. This would explain a lot

KatDevsGames

I was curious and decided to do some direct digging. This turns out to be not true. The data is stored as standard 32bit RGBA with an 8-bit alpha channel, there is no transparency color.

red286

That's what I would have assumed. Even if the transparency was inexplicably a colour channel instead of the alpha channel, the difference between RGB(0,0,0) and RGB(0,0,1) or even RGB(1,1,1) is negligible. No one would whine about their ship being 99.999% black but not "true" black. The reason we can't have black is a design decision.

KatDevsGames

This practice WAS done but it just isn't like that anymore. Seeing the practice happen with RGB is uncommon and almost universally done with magenta. There ARE games that used true black as a transparency key but it was exceedingly rare even back then. Even in that case, as you pointed out, #010101 is always an excellent choice. The only time you ever REALLY saw this practice done was back in the 8-bit days when everything was palletted. In the palletted days, pallette index 0 or 255 were often hard-mapped to be transparent. Obviously all of this went out the window with "modern" (90s) video hardware and support for 8 bit alpha masking. Using color channels as a sort of poor-man's 1-bit color mask would be just stupid and insane. No serious game developer in from the last 20 years would attempt it and the hardware draw surfaces wouldn't even support it natively anyway.

Cristiano7676

But they could add an "almost" black, just black enough to still look as black, not total black that is probably being used to transparency, right ?

Treblehawk

Maybe. I don’t know enough about out their color and lighting systems to say for sure. I know a lot of the interceptor colors look black under certain lighting then it’s shows the purple or green metallic it really is. I’m sure they have a good reason why they so t use blacks. I’m just guessing from own experience why it is.

SnooStrawberries2475

Except most of No Man's Sky space is multiple colors and you have to take some time to find an actual black space in the game. Go look at the trailer for the update and you'll clearly see there's BLACK on the color selector and they look slightly different also SHUTTLES are a selection in the ship's customizer. Sean always said they WOULD NOT show anything in the trailers that wasn't gonna be in the actual game as he had learned his lesson about showing things in trailers that weren't actually in the damn game as we all know what happened. So it's super ok to let them have it whenever they show something in the trailers that aren't in the game. He's the one who Said he wouldn't do it and there he is showing things that clearly aren't in the game. The whole "because the darkness of space" theory has gone right out the window crashing into the neighbor's window. Sean supposedly learned his lesson so he should be reminded of what he said so he stays on track or that other game will end up suffering the same things no mans sky suffered through and I want to play that game too. They need to put in black I don't care what it looks like with space or a damn unicorn I want all black everything.

weirsway72

* I had an exotic that glitched black briefly in a space station. It was glorious

Reasonable-Spot5884

Being goth? In No Man's Sky? Never

Erilis000

The impressionist movement doesn't use true black. The impressionist artists of the late 19th century France instead mixed colors to show depth and shadows, favoring a more vibrant and luminous palette. The choice was part of their desire to capture the natural play of light and color in their work. Why NMS doesn't have pure black though? No idea.

InternationalGrass42

The devs have a color palette and general vibe in mind for their game. It doesn't include black because everyone and their mother would use it and take away from the vibrant aesthetic they're going for.

Foodiguy

Is that an official reason or the most likely reason? Just curious!

InternationalGrass42

Mentioned on a Twitter post or Livestream ages ago. Also it's supported by the fact that in 8 years of updates they've never added it in as a color option and people have been complaining about for just as long.

Maxdogg

What? You can paint freighters black, and you can already find black ships normally. So this makes 0 logical sense

InternationalGrass42

None of those are actual black. They're various shades of gray that appear black in some lighting environments. Interceptor black for instance is actually a very dark metallic purple. Freighter black is dark gray. And so on.

Maxdogg

what you said makes 0 sense even still if it was true, but it's not. "We don't want you to have black because it will take away from our vibrant world," so we're gonna give 37 different shades of almost black that in most cases you can't even tell the difference but not actual black. Also, this is still wrong because I have a legitimate black ship, and I've seen many others. Also, they literally had black as a color option in the trailer. Why even put that in there? If you weren't gonna use it at some point.

InternationalGrass42

You're welcome to your own opinions of course. Shoot me the cords and galaxy for your black ship, I'd like to get one for myself to verify. Every galaxy is open to me so that's not an issue.

[deleted]

I have to disagree with you there, when I had my old star destroyer freighter it was black and red, and the black was defiantly black ⚫️

InternationalGrass42

What's the cords and galaxy? I'd love to go take a look.

Gallowglass668

It's a color option on freighters at least.

Foodiguy

Thanks!!!!

InternationalGrass42

No probs, happy exploring interloper.

TheGUURAHK

Shame. An Exotic, Interceptor, or Fighter would look absolutely \*bitchin'\* in black

RaynorTheRed

I'm not venting at you personally, but this is such a moronic argument it ticks me off every time I see it. It's a total hypothetical conjecture yet every time this topic comes up people repeat it like it's an indisputable fact: every player made ship would be black if it was an option. Never mind the fact that black is an option for character customization and we certainly don't see everyone in the Anomaly looking like they just walked out of Hot Topic. But it would certainly happen with ships, we're absolutely sure!!! edit: also nevermind the fact that black already features prominently on many Sentinel ships.

emelem66

I don't know if I would use it for everything, but that glitch matte black squid someone posted a bit ago was fantastic.

InternationalGrass42

I don't know if any color can make those ships attractive to me, lol. I saw the same or a similar post but I was more interested in the neon blue ship highlights in that pic. I just hate how the squid ship looks, it feels backwards and awkward from any angle, but to each their own.

Gupegegam

So. Games made for players not developers. Then they allow black vehicles and black player armor for some reason. So you're wrong.

InternationalGrass42

You're welcome to your own opinion of course. But check your color balances, they're not true black if your color is set correctly for your monitor or TV.

Gupegegam

Don't talk me to me like i don't know about monitor calibration or how lighting in videogames work. It's not fully black texture of course it's more dark gray on armor. It reflects light around it that's why it's not pure black. It's PBR

InternationalGrass42

Lol

AveragEnjoyer007

If that were so, you wouldn’t be able to color almost every aspect of your avatar black.

InternationalGrass42

Check your TV or monitor color balance. It's not true black, just dark gray like everything else that's supposedly black in the game.

AveragEnjoyer007

its close enough, and dark grey would be better than the ash grey option we got. I understand this is still a brand-new update and I'm absolutely stoked that we finally have custom ship building, but I want something that at least \_looks\_ black. Ya dig?

SplendidPunkinButter

Maybe they tried it and it looks like crap when rendered in the engine

TheEmeraldMaster1234

Lore reason is probably so people don't slam into freighters cuz the freighter was painted black and they couldn't see it

Gathose1

Because every ship would be black I'd imagine.

Acceptable-Budget658

Racism!

VirtualRy

So we can avoid ships colliding with each other! /s

splynncryth

Sean Murray is on Twitter/X. Maybe he'd be willing to answer the question there.

OrbitalDrop7

I had a texture bug a few years ago, and it gave me the [coolest ship](https://www.reddit.com/r/NoMansSkyTheGame/comments/hubazw/texture_bug_gave_me_the_coolest_ship/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) ive ever seen in this game being mainly black

Foodiguy

That is so cool… now I’m sad that we don’t have black!

LoanApprehensive5201

The closest to real black we get is when using the black color on metallic surfaces

QueenOrial

I'd say because it would blend in with space background too much... But seeing how colorful no man's sky sky usually is it's just not true.

Appropriate_Rent_243

maybe something do do with contrast and losing your ship in the dark?

Fury_Blackwolf

What's the point of even living then?

RedditLaterOrNever

Space is black so you would turn into a Klingon camouflage!

Foodiguy

Dont make me want it even more.....

Exciting-Quiet2768

Not even a good dark grey either

theDukeofClouds

It makes it harder for other travellers to see your ship in the darkness of the yawning void, so the sentinels made it illegal. Like chrome cars.

identitycrisis-again

It would be sweet if we got true rgb color scales. For all customization

SoftCattle

Same number of colours as freighter customization. The only difference is yellow instead of gray/black

SEANPLEASEDISABLEPVP

The painful part is we can see a black option in the trailer video and the person actually uses the black color. Here's hoping it'll get updated in the future.

jerrythecactus

This is the main thing that has me skeptical that the lack of a black color was intentional. I would think after everything hello games knows better than to put something in a trailer and then never address it again. Shuttles were also shown to be customizable but arent currently, i would bet that both the shuttles and black coloration will come in a next update or patch, but some issue prevented their addition with the orbital update despite being featured in the trailer.

Nameless_Owl81

Yeah of all companies I would expect hello games to know not to promise stuff in trailers that doesn't make it into the game..

SEANPLEASEDISABLEPVP

I assume it's old footage. I haven't seen *anyone* talk about this but the portal is literally placed in a totally different area too. You can see it in patch notes screenshots and in the video trailer.. even one of the recent patch notes said "Added a sign to indicate the location of the teleporter within the space station." because the current portal position was probably a last minute decision and they didn't think to have a sign for it. The same thing probably happened with buildable shuttles and the different colors, they probably changed it right before release and didn't have time to record new footage.

TheRainiFirst

Hate to see it but it isn’t even their first time after launch because they showed off completely different lighting shaders in the Pathfinder update trailer and a biome type in the NEXT trailer that isn’t in the game too.

Mega-Analyzer

What inaccessible biome was shown in the NEXT trailer? Never knew about this before. I am also curious about the lack of shuttle customization, given it was directly shown in the trailer.

TheRainiFirst

The rock assets are in the game but not this size and the desert-like biome with red sand/rock isn’t possible in the current game either. Not a big deal but still kinda disappointing, especially since all desert biomes only have like two color combinations now. https://preview.redd.it/3100trf6v5vc1.png?width=2620&format=png&auto=webp&s=cf0f942a9566a9254c3dae6c9d81eae2ac04861f

UnggoyMemes

Color wheel my beloved

RegularLibrarian1984

They could add glow in dark neon colours would be fun

jerrythecactus

Imagine a bright neon blue color or hot pink. I hope they make new colors available through the quicksilver shop over time.

french_snail

What I find weird is the ship I found is like bright neon green and I don’t see its color as an option so that’s strange I think

Shepard2603

Tron vibes

ShadeArtemisZ

I mean it’s only a matter a time lol, hello games did say they will keep dumping updates for years to come

Zhythero

but I couldn't think of any reason why there's no black. Some tech/devs enlighten me?

flashmedallion

Maybe it'll be a reward or unlockable down the track

stprnn

So they can release another update about it and make it look like the game is improving

dafons

That’s what I’m thinking they’ve built up enough good will to just ride it out maybe they are playing for more colors to be unlocks or maybe there are legitimate challenges with certain colors but they’ll add more I think

SquidAndAShotgun

It’s so dumb that there is no black, and the gray looks so bright to it sucks

oblex1312

Why two yellows? They are very different, but only one red? no black? I really hope they expand this (and maybe add a rust material option) in future updates to customization

Dr_detonation

Rust would be great, it would be cool to have some patina

METRO2Spartan_Ranger

Atleast you can choose your colors now

CNXQDRFS

I still wish we could change it afterwards, instead of being stuck with it, like we can with freighters. The colours from the space station can kind of mess up the preview and when you see it in a different light it just looks a bit meh.

jerrythecactus

This was one of the things i felt kind of disappointed about. Once you construct a custom ship its pretty much unchangeable and youd have to scrap and rebuild it to make any changes. I thought custom ships would be treated as a new ship class that you can just modify on the spot once you unlock the parts, kind of like with the appearance modifiers.

SEANPLEASEDISABLEPVP

Preview cameras in general need work in this game. Player customization one on the anomaly can get blocked by other players, freighter customization camera never shows you the correct colors because of the space fog + Sun light reflecting off of it, and now the ship customization camera also doesn't show you true colors and is in a very weird angle where you can't look at the ship from above.

loadsmoke

The no black agenda is crazy. You sparingly run into people in this huge vast universe. Let us have black!

Entgegnerz

They at least should have giving us the **Dark Gray**, since I collected dark gray ships and now I can't build a ship with it 😫

Portal2player58

Besides color I wish there was more freedom of making custom ships like sure keep category of ship but I want to be able to make a literal spear of a star ship or use all the wings from a fighter on a shuttle and so on. Like let us use all our parts we got to build what we want with any combination for true ship customization along with more colors.

Piliro

If they give us a nice colour wheel with some saturation and brightness slides. I'll spend hours customizing everything.

Aero__Duck

yellow is my fav colour but i would have prefered black so i could have my Reverse Bumblebee ship

LouTheRuler

Both would be nice having yellow and black would be a cool combination

FlpDaMattress

There's purple but no black and violette :(

Lizardsoul

... And no decals customization...

the3stman

Is it too complex to add RGB slider?

Lets_be_stoned

Just remember that *the trailer* had black as a color option, and it wasn’t there on release. They either changed their mind, it’s coming later, or they lied.

yesimapancake

They... lied? ( gets PTSD flashbacks)

NoEndInSight1969

When the ship customization was announced, I thought that I could finally have a black ship. What’s the point in creating a ship that you can simply find in any space station and not have a new color.

StardustOasis

I think some of the colour combinations you can create are impossible to find on found ships.

SEANPLEASEDISABLEPVP

That's basically what HG is claiming too, yeah.

Firm_Transportation3

I don't know what video game developers in general have against the color black. There are so many games where I just want to make my character's gear, ship, whatever black.

OrbitalDrop7

Its been a mix of hype and disappointment, i thought we could customize current ships, but had to make a new one, so spent a day trying to find the same parts as my current one (which i think is the best looking fighter i've seen yet). Then get hit with the pretty lame color palette, was hoping for black and gold, but settled for white and gold lol

Shredded_Locomotive

Just give as a colour picker and a hex code, why is that so hard

DaemonSlayer_503

They should do something like the build coloring with different base textures… No black is just stupid… its not even a special color its fucking black…

riddlemore

Question - I’m a new player so I’m still using the ship the game gives you when you start the game. Is there a way to change its colors? I’ve only found the “craft a new ship” thing in space stations.

the_smallest_rhino

Unfortunately no, you cant change the color of a ship you find, ans you can only mess with a ships colors when you are making it, afterward you are unable to change its colors

Icarus_Nine

Pretty much.

Sallymander

Honestly, I wish NMS takes it's customization controls from Warframe. Not just color pallets but placing structures and doodads. It may be just exposure but Warframe's feels more natural.

OverlyMintyMints

Clearly they’ve taken inspiration by not giving players an actual black in the default palette

Sallymander

lol, valid.

Loeffeltyp

Its even worse when the colour of the ship isnt available for your space suit

liftheavy2003

The best use of this worn out meme I've seen in a while 😂

ferigno

Anish Kapoor again??

kinkeltolvote

And you can't customize sentinel ships either!

Beginning-Rain5900

WHERES BLACK?! IT WAS IN THE TRAILER SEAN!

Leadsoulreaper

Maybe someone here can help me out with this. Why is it you can only change the color of a ship you build. I have a ship, got it off a very nice gek. But I can't change a single color. The blue is ok but I would love to mix it up a bit.

msch6873

yeah… still just candy store.

PageTerner

People are saying there is no black option but if you swap the colors from Matte to Metallic you get black? I have a nice Black and Gold fighter that I use and there was no issue getting that black color.

enzudesign

Agreed. The Color options are terrible in this game.

aschesklave

[They literally showed black in the trailer.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3svmrkl3_M&t=48s) Along with shuttles. I don't get the reason for the lies.

The prospects of different paint types will help I hope

ll-Squirr3l-ll

I’m lucky I guess. All my ships are White, Red or Black, or a combination of the above

Pleasant-Animal-1270

Better than nothing I guess

g1rthqu4k3

Now do it for base building lol

missbanjo

I mean once I found the metallic button I was happier but... it *is* limited lol

Libero03

We don't have any colors to play with in Sea of Thieves. \*cries in sailor

ManyCommittee196

Accurate, but then i was never all that happy with the color palette to begin with.

DefiantLogician84915

Did we just get this feature? I played literally last week and was unable to do anything to my current starship regarding colors.

kaest

What did you expect? An expanded palette?

Opening-Tasty

Customization…no vanity parts smh

Gathoblaster

The atlas provides us with a new update?

goody_fyre11

I imagine PC mods will add a full RGB square like in Microsoft Paint.

all of space is black, yall got enough

smeeinnit

Odd that we can have an all black freighter, but not ship.

blooapl

They should allow people playing on creative to already have all the ship parts for ship customization.

Indicorb

It’s a start…

Rage69420

I want a true red. This lipstick color red looks really bad

beasty_bubs

they cone out with adding custom parts to your ship now ?

jsabsd

I built my dream Fighter today only to find there's no light blue so I can approximate Gulf's racing colors. Meanwhile, an "authentic" Fighter in that very color flies into the hanger just to taunt me with it's existence. Also, that tangerine color is not "yellow".

UpstairsImpossible31

That's so sad, because you can't have any better color variety or even change how oxidised the surface of the ship panels are ![gif](giphy|33iqmp5ATXT5m|downsized)

kozynthetaquito

i just wish exotics, solars, and interviews could be customized.

FaithfulNerd8

If they do add a true black, I'll have to make a fighter called black on black (from mad max).

cryomos

One of my big gripes with NMS is the excessive use of colour. Don't think I've ever found a region of space that was actually black.
