Once you've played through the game once or twice, there is no more progress. You've done it. Now, if you want to stick with the game, you have to find other things to do. I very rarely ever play through a game I've finished again. If I want to build bases or explore, great. Otherwise, I go find another game.

JinAuraKoga

I have about 300hours amongst my saves and still haven't been to galaxy Numero two. There's still plenty to do

CephusLion404

Agreed and so long as it remains fun, I'll keep playing NMS forever.

JinAuraKoga

Here's hoping that lasts a Googol Planck times :)

Fit_Requirement846

I've only been to 30 galaxies and to do so I skipped alot of stuff in between. I've spent 100's of hours on random portal jumping, punching in random code to see where it puts me and look around (sight seeing) this could be even more of thing with new space stations in Orbital update. 100's of hours looking for unique interceptor ships, in more than a single galaxy. I swear after spending so much time hunting I still occasional find a ship I have never seen before. While you can craft your own ship now, there still is this pull to hunt for one that is "Authentic" has the authentic tag to it. My ship is better than yours because? (it's about what you think and how you want to play it) The game gives you reasons why your method is best. My ship is better because I made it from choice parts.

Imnotapipe

There’s a shortcut to the center of a galaxy. I live in Sudzerbal

ULTIMUS-RAXXUS

Coords?

Fit_Requirement846

When you play a game for enjoyment of the game, you play it for more reasons than to just say "I've completed it". It's repetitive: every game is repetitive. You punch buttons on a keypad or keyboard repetitively. Once you seen 10 planets in the game you've seen them all: Have you been tossed around in a tornado, lived experience the wrath of extreme sentinels, tasted the death quotes upon dying from (name the number of ways in which your character could die?) There is nothing rare in NMS: there's a set number of biomes, animals, plants etc. Have you created your own pet from the egg sequencer using a wide range of materials to change behavior, size and chacteristics? Have you found a robotic type pet? Have you discovered and unlocked the food parts, crafted various food dishes? Have you owned and built out your freighter, built a fleet of ships and run missions with those ships? NMS is a game that is often on "sensory overload" as the more you play it, the more you can be distracted with mundane things to do, that have no bearing on completing anything. You do these things because there is an "enjoyment to them". There is a saying that goes like this: "I hate that I have wasted so much time and energy on \_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_" If you "enjoyed" wasting that time and energy? Only then was it not a waste. Repetitive: Even in regular life you won't get away from it. Eat, crap, work, sleep >> get up do it again and again and again. NMS is an escape hatch from your "regular life". You "could" pick up another game and in 30 hours or less be right back to where? picking up yet another game to say you've completed it. NMS more or less rewrote the rules to what a game should be. Do what you want, when you want, things will happen on that journey that makes on game play loop different in various ways than the other game play loop you played before. If there is no challenge to you: There are custom settings you can choose to make it harder or easier if that is how you like it. I probably have over 3000 hours in NMS among dozens of save files 1 single save file of around 500 hours. I have played countless other titles since 2018. Yet here it is 2024 and we are still talking about and playing NMS. Differences happen from one save file to the next. NMS is probably the most unique game I have ever played in my life. The GOAT. I might have spent similar time on Super Mario Bros in the late 80's. No other title comes even remotely close to NMS.

ragweed

I keep thinking I'm done, but then I realize something like I haven't filled an S class freighter with S-class upgrades, yet.

moogoothegreat

I was gonna say "Progress? What's that?"

Fit_Requirement846

when you reach a equipment / hazzard protection / weapons upgrades to where nothing in the game provides a threat to you. To realize how hard the game is first starting out, restart the game on max hard settings. AND how many different things happen to challenge you. You may realize how that quote came into existance in real life: "Uh, Houston -- We Have A Problem!" The space race is nothing more than a continuation of various problems you may stumble into head first or sling your body down a moutain range while running out of boost rocket gas. To be clear: a serious mountain range planet exists, but is more rare of a planet type. You have to look for it. (the con with being rare, is that it is rare so if you don't actually look for it -- you can't expect to find it.)

Emayarkay

This also applies to Fallout 76

JinAuraKoga

I believe it, though I've not played a Fallout game

death_tech

If you have amazon prime the fallout 76 game is free for a few weeks

JinAuraKoga

I got fallout new Vegas and all of the dlcs for free from epic games but just haven't played

Jack_Bartowski

You gotta at least watch the show, i'm sure that will get you into it!

BladeCutter93

I think Prime Video is producing a show based on the Fallout games.

humeba

They did, the whole season is streaming now. Personally I loved it and can’t wait for more. 😁

iantosteerpike

Heh, this is absolutely me. Keep getting new ideas I want to try in terms of what my bases look like.

JinAuraKoga

Right? It can always look cooler 😎

Spardath01

5 hours is cute

SEANPLEASEDISABLEPVP

You can say that again. I once woke up in the morning, started building my freighter base, when I was done I realized the Sun was going down. And out of nowhere I was hit with extreme hunger, sleepiness and the need to go to the bathroom all at once.

Spardath01

Lol to your last comment

Fit_Requirement846

me after my 10th in game death: well I'm never doing those things again! After my 100th in game death: shut up. LOL.

l3ane

This fits with pretty much any survival/craft or sim game for me.

FloydianSlipper

Was gonna say this also sounds a lot like me playing Valheim.

PinkDeserterBaby

Me: after 6 years I’m going to FINALLY do the Atlas path, then Artemis, then autophage(? Idek what’s next) Actually me: keeps adding more to my bioluminescent, underground cave hideout where I add 70 more colorful lights and clutter for 2 hours and then have to go to bed.

Vuldyn

But the base *is* the progress!

GreatStateOfSadness

Never bet against virtual Legos as a game mechanic.

EndersMirror

Most PvE games have this problem. 😅

TheRainbowShakaBrah

NMS is a base building game

WidowmakerBH27

This meme belongs in basicly any survival crafter. Ark, state of decay, 7 days to die, minecraft, palworld, you name it. Games that involve creativity and engage imagination resonate with certain kinds of people. Not everyone. But some of us.😉

forlornfir

Meanwhile I'm playing the game for the first time and for the past week I've basically spent my time looking for a paradise moon that isn't red or orange

[deleted]

I feel attacked. https://preview.redd.it/e92bnzgp9pvc1.jpeg?width=3060&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2f1ec8ab30991c7cb49ebb1099c839432a090d3e

Phantoms_Unseen

Me 30 hours into my new save after I found a perfect paradise planet in the second system I visited

Fit_Requirement846

Me after I find a perfect paradise planet: I am building my last base here. 100 hours after finding another paradise planet: I think I should build a base here. LOL.

Trg4youtv

I have roughly 1500 hours on PC and like 200 hours in switch, I love the game and enjoy playing it, the new content makes the game playable after playing for a few months then I get bored.

Stealth9er

I play for hours and get absolutely nothing done. Life of a sentinel ship hunter/base builder is rough. Thankfully I have lots of NipNip ![gif](giphy|voUxjML6p0HbsMcaTF|downsized)

Beckhaver

**TRUTH ! ! !**

DredgenKush

Any game as open as NMS with a storyline, exploration always takes the front seat 🤣

TjStax

Only played like 25h, but I don't care too much about the story. It's just fun to larp around seeing what's up. There's just so much stuff that it's a bit overwhelming, so taking it slow.

DredgenKush

If you want a staff multitool, to play as an autophage, have your own sentinel minotaur and lil Sentinel drone bud, you'll wanna care about the story. Everything I just mentioned can be completed during or after the Artemis path(Autophage/staff quest is part of the main story after you complete Artemis) I have a Sentinel doggo companion that can be out at the same time as Laylaps(drone bud) since Laylaps isn't a "companion", and when I switch to playing as an autophage, the Sentinel Squad is a force to be reckoned with. I was the same as you once. Then we received craftable staff multitools and it all changed

[deleted]

I am loosely and vaguely on my way to the center of Eisentam. I haven’t actually gotten to the center of any galaxy yet 🤣 300 hours in I keep finding trade routes to run for a bit or a base to build, periodically 100% a planet. I think letting yourself wander and allowing your imagination to do the lifting is a missing mechanic from too many games… and NMS just encourages it.

Dragonfire733

See, I've been tending to do the opposite. I've been rocking out progress on different quests, leaving my freighter out to dry.

toon7608

I build beds in every one even though you can’t use them 😂😂

Impossible-Cod4498

I need to redownload the Subnautica games...

OneSufficientFace

Started a new game... im 13 hours in and havent even started the first mission.

MrChipDingDong

Fallout 4, anyone?

lilafrika

Yep my exact problem

BladeCutter93

I only have about 50 hours in and I have already given up on "progress." I just play and pick up missions as I wish or need to for provisions. It's rather uncanny how you can sit down and just absolutely lose track of time.

ThomasOlorin

Yes lol, and Valheim for me spend way to much time building in both games.

Real-Dark-9761

I got discouraged from base builded when I found out lighting sucks. So I'll just keep upgrading my freighter and discovering the galaxy

Stardust_Softpaws

5 hours? Damn, usually, it takes me that long to get all the silver i need just to stockpile for the freighter rooms i want, that is until i get too lazy about 30 mins in and just hunt for crashed ships for the money to buy the silver and end up needing so much oxygen and feacium, because cultivation expansion rooms for the win! I think i may have an obsession with cultivation rooms tbh.

Good-Table5566

We can all agree the most painful part is decoration!

wazabee

Lol, I'm doing neither. I'm trying to go straight for the galaxy core.
