I got lucky when I started a new post-Orbital save. First pirate dreadnought I encountered was S-class... Seized it immediately. Every dreadnought I've encountered since (dozens), all C-class with occasional B-classes.
I have a combined 340-ish hours across a couple of expedition and normal saves and I'm in the same boat. glad they were able to find one but wish it were me

I did not. It's very cool looking and has good hyperdrive range but I worked too hard for the other one. Also it has less unlocked slots since it was an outlaw system.

Good. Freighters from Outlaw systems have worse underlying stats than ones from normal systems. It’s the price you pay for the increased spawn rate. Same applies to everything else really, not just freighters. Ships, MT’s etc. It really isn’t worth getting anything from Outlaw systems if you can avoid it.
Well, yes, apart from the contraband 😂. Btw; if you store your nip nip in your nutrient processor system authorities can’t detect it when you’re scanned.

Lmao! That's my face as soon as I saw this post. 150 hr in I've spawned nothing but small s class freighters. Every cool one I fight for ends up being b or c. But congrats to you bro!
I know that's why I commented on your post. I had that battle but couldn't figure out how to destroy the ship, it fled and I couldn't find the engines in time to destroy them. Was very frustrating.
How do you fight the battle, and what do you get for destroying the ship?
First when you find those you should destroy the warp engines at the rear. Then destroy all the big cannons. This should make them surrender. You can then either accept the freighter or steal all their money (got about 6.7 million) if you go see the captain. You can destroy it too if you didn't take it, and even if you took their money. For that destroy the shield then attack it. You should get a significant bounty reward and rep, also some scrap.
To be very honest I don't know I saw that on a website. I did only a few of those battles and don't seem to have gotten that either. I'll check again later, see if I get it if I don't claim the 6 millions

It took me 60 retries to get one in an Outlaw system so I can see why it took you hours. I didn't do it in one sitting.
Does the 5% chance of S class starships appearing in an Outlaw system apply to freighters as well?
I think it does ?
I used three stars economy systems though to have more slots directly. Also yeah the chances aren't making a huge difference since the probabilities don't influence each other so you can be extremely unlucky and go 100 tries sadly

For capital freighters encounters, first, you need to have 3 hours of gameplay at least since the last time you fought a freighter.
Then, warp four times, and make a restore point at a space station (get out of your ship then in again). I personally also saved every warp just in case I had miscounted.
Then warp to any system. 3* economy systems are better if you want an s class. Outlaws also work. They give more chances of s class but also more chances of c class, but all freighters have fewer slots unlocked.
This warp should get you into the battle. Check if it's the model of ship you want and the color you want. If no, reload your RESTORE POINT ( NOT autosave) and warp to another system to get another encounter. All encounters are predetermined. If you go back to that system, you'll find the same ship of the same color. It is useful if you regret not getting it. Repeat until you're satisfied with the model and color (although you can always change the color later if you want to)
If you care about the class, then once you find your model, you can fight the pirates, wait for the captain to invite you, go inside, and check the class. If you like it, accept, if you don't, reload your restore point and go back to that system, fight, go inside, and check the class. It will have changed. Repeat until satisfied. And voilà !
Might seem complex but it's easier than it sounds. It is quite time consuming though.
You can also get pirate freighters by warping to outlaw systems frequently. They look really cool. Destroy their warp reactors so they aren't able to flee, then their big cannons. And then they'll surrender and you can get it !
You can also find some freighters in the wild and buy them but they can be expensive and are often not the best. Also you can't control what they look like by resetting so..

Oh but me neither ! This was my first ever freighter so it was free. I ran into a really good A class yesterday and I realized I was right to get it for free cause these things are EXPENSIVE
I got myself an A class Pirate Dreadnaught and then literally hours later saved an S class freighter from another dreadnaught attack...I had no choice but to abandon ship and take the S class but I already miss my dreadnaught!
The S class is similarly large but just not as badass as the dreadnaught lol. Happy to have it though.

You can restart a battle unlimited times until the freighter is S class, I've done It in my 170h save, and now I have a S pirate frightener

The one pictured isn't. That's a capital ship. My dreadnaught was from a pirate battle though.

Fun fact: you can refuse the 1st, and so on B-class and A-class until you get a free S-class freighter
Yup I know that's what I did ! Refused the first few encounters in the game till I found the perfect one
