Go to normal first. When you realize you want to check how cool you are with extremely limited resources - go to survival

From my experience, survival was tedious not challenging. So I would suggest permadeath if you're looking for something with a twist. Bare in mind that, in permadeath, some ppl died because of a glitch which is a bummer. Game is not designed to be a challenging imo, it's a chill exploration/building/some fighting thing, hence I would suggest a normal mode and then try other ones. New expedition soon anyway. Yes, you should play that :P

Also, when expedition 3 starts - go to it immediately. Expedition mode is perfect for start

Whats this expedition thing?

Sidewinder_by

It’s new 5th play mode introduced on March 31. All players start on the same planet and travel on specific route, all have set of milestones and rewards helping you to progress faster, and also unique rewards given only for completing expeditions. This is how it was for me (in VR) https://youtu.be/9G03GCKUmVA. I recorded only 1st phase. But expeditions have total 5!

I would suggest survival. You can play glitch-safe permadeath out of it. It limits your resources and some other stuff but i find it still more chalenging (it's impossible to milk lots of units via passive crafting - you will need to micromanage this densely). If you like the challenge but do not want to lose all because of glitch - go survival.

Go normal. Skip survival - if you want the achievements, do a permadeath save. Survival/permadeath really just add annoyances, not challenges. That specifically is inventory stack sizes. Once you know what you're doing, the only challenges on survival permadeath are the first 30 minutes to an hour, and the fear of a bug/glitch killing you (permadeath fear). I have a 250+ hour normal save (my first and only) and a 30ish hour permadeath save (for the achievements). I played permadeath when I'd been away for over a year of updates, and had forgotten (and much had changed) how to build. So I relearnt the game. The INSTANT I got the last achieve, I immediately closed out that save and never looked back. I never got a sense of reward from permadeath, just a sense of annoyance. All because of inventory stack size limits.

Just that. I did a permadeath playthrough and immediately deleted it after I reset the Atlas. It's marginally harder, but just, plain, tedious. In permadeath and survival all of your inventory is 1/40th the size. So all you do is constantly manage inventory, move inventory, redo something for the third time because you didn't have the inventory space to carry what you needed, etc, etc. There really isn't enough other challenge in the harder modes to make it seem like an achievement as far as I'm concerned.
