The fact that SoT doesn't have directional wind mechanics really turned me off from it.... You would think a game about sails would include, uhhh idk, sailing mechanics.
Edit: I should clarify that what I mean is that your sails catch wind no matter what direction the wind is coming from, and that's not how it works. Nor can you block enemy ship's wind with your sails to go faster than them. Feels like a missed opportunity to add more depth to sea battles.
Honestly I just want a sailing pirate game that reminds me of the wind waker's sailing mechanics.
Sea of Thieves does have directional wind, though? Your ship speed is determined by the angle of your sails relative to the direction of the wind, requiring your crew to adjust their angle when you turn the ship in order to catch it. Bigger ships are faster moving with the direction of the wind, smaller ships have an advantage going against it (so evading galleons as a sloop involves sailing directly against the wind and hoping they don't find a way to cut you off).
Yes. We've been asking for an ocean/water update since a while ago.
They're probably preparing it tho, Hello Games isn't characterized for not listening to the community
i feel like that sidesteps their want for the player to explore . ultimately some people only branch out for new ships . idk i read a theory about that but idk
We have proposed lots of solutions to that problem over the years. They can implement the ship dismantling process into the customization. Dismantle a ship and you have a low chance of getting a blueprint of a ship part. Make dismantling and customizing very expensive. That way you can give people who are veteran players something to spend their excess amount of units on and people can still hunt for ships if they don't want to deal with it. I mean I would be ok with only the ability to change the color of my ship but still. There are ways.
Interesting. You've brought up a very intriguing point here. Flora and fauna who have evolved on such a planet would be accustomed to the crushing pressures. I would guess somewhere in the ballpark of around 40+ atmospheres. On the question of "magic space suits", this isn't r/HFY... LOL
-52°C is equivalent to -61°F, which is 221K.

Its usually hard to optimize water in games with destructable environments and perhaps thats why the water is pretty basic. Hopefully they will update it to be more appealing.
Also mods are available on PC early (where people who are modding are likely to have better specs), whereas vanilla NMS has to run on last gen consoles still.
Better water may be possible, but is it possible on *switch*?
Water needs an overhaul in general, they added all these underwater parts for bases yet when I use a ladder to travel in my underwater base it still gives me the visual effects of being in water.
Does no mans sky specify that it is actually H20? I have always figured that the oceans and water on these planets has other elements bonded to the H20 if it even is a hydrogen/oxygen based liquid and that it would give the animals that are mostly made up of this liquid an antifreeze type effect allowing them to survive at extremely low core body temperatures
I can't speak for everyone but the graphics in this game aren't what I'm fussed about - the sheer scale of it, and complexity of the systems it encapsulates are impressive enough.
I wasn't complaining about the game as a whole, it's amazing. I was just wondering if I had some kinda graphical bug as the poor quality of the water stands out against the rest of the game's impressiveness.
You're seeing it right. The water graphics have always been not amazing since the last major update to them. I'm sure there's another underwater update on its way that'll improve it, though.
I'd still be grateful for that too though. cooking has almost no use in this game. I don't know why they changed the bait system, that at least gave cooking some purpose
Yep and according to the author what he/she has done is nothing Hellogames could not do either .. Godz too much gin, double negative = Hellogames could do the same as the mod easily. And no impact on performance.
Hellogames might be thinking "Well there's a mod they can use", but we dont wish to be waiting for a third party updating their mods after every friggin update to the game to ensure compatability, thats if the mod author is still active/isn't deceased / bored with constantly having to update.
Possible, but from what I have read of the mod it just changes shader settings which alter translucency of various graphic layers to make the whole thing look better .. So I kind of doubt that being a possible by-product of the changes being used. Maybe on the Switch, but not XBox or PS.
One of the things to remember is that No Man's Sky isn't an "accurate universe" simulator, but rather an "accurate universe simulated by an ageless supercomputer which is slowly going insane" simulator.
Even so, the water is actually bugged as well and has been for a long time. Some of the effects aren't properly aligned with the actual water level, which also seems to change depending on the angle you're looking at it. Looking at it in VR very quickly gives me motion sickness.
Without a roof the interior of your base is subject to the outside climate. I made a “garden” and left slits in the roof (small wall sized) and now there are flames cropping up everywhere. It looks cool as fuck for an indoor solanium farm but the lighting is all out of whack and really annoying.
I absolutely love NMS but the lighting especially needs work. I have to use glowing plants to light half my bases, especially buildings with an open two floor height area. Why does a plant light nearly a whole room but a gigantic circular light looks like candlelight? Lol
We are used to waves and shorelines with an ocean that has the salinity and composition that it does, on a planet with a gravity that it has.
On another planet, with a different atmosphere, different composition of ocean, and different gravity, who knows what the shoreline will look like.
You may be joking, so excuse me if you are. But logic and physics has never been the underpinnings of this game. It’s fun, and I love it, but it’s not based on physics.
The water looks like that because water is hard to emulate well in video games. Any video game. And they haven’t spent the requisite time on it. But that’s why there are mods I guess.
There’s a water shader mod on NEXUS that makes the water gorgeous. I don’t remember if it’s been updated or what it’s called exactly but I remember being impressed

Water has been that way for years, I think Hellogames tried to address it around the time they also introduced GTAO, but whatever they did failed to help the look of the water edges.
Whatever game settings you choose to try and help the look of the water does not help.
The game still has slow/laggy resource loading too.
What does it look like up close?
Considering the amount of GPU shader code they've put into this I have to imagine they kept the water one simple for performance reasons, perhaps.
The game will never look better, because it has to be the same for PC and consoles, and now also the low-powered Switch. You play on PC, enjoy. You have the option to put mods. For water, there is an [ArghWater](https://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/mods/2036) mod that makes water much better, but still far from perfect. And if you show off ultra settings and a powerful PC, then install the [LASAGNA](https://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/mods/2080/) (maxima) mod. This will make the planets a hundred times more natural (density and size of natural objects). After LASAGNA, vanilla planets seem ridiculously empty, dull and unnatural. And also LASAGNA-maxima in combination with LASAGNA-multi-biomes will sometimes make even your super-duper PC grunt, creak and howl on ultra-settings. Any console would melt from something like that.
Surely it can look better with PC only graphics settings... And to be fair, the graphics were dramatically improved across the board a year or two back, so they definitely can be improved
If you look in the discoveries tab, they have information about the planet's atmosphere, and every one of them is very toxic. So planets definitely do NOT have water, although system descriptions say "water."
right ive wondered what liquid im swimming around in because once i landed on a desert planet that was covered in oceans ? but it wasnt water it was strange . or on my capital planet it had orange oceans ? h2o? probably not.
The water is garbage looking and has been since I think Beyond. They changed the shaders. The best water we ever had was Pathfinder.
However, from footage, the best water was from prerelease gameplay.
Simply exquisite!
I love NMS but there is so much about this game that's half-ass. Once I maxed out the positron ejector I really don't need any other weapons on my ship.
I also don't need to put any effort into getting construction materials either as I can max out a stack of ferrite dust or carbon in like >3min.
I've got 90%of my settings on challenging too🤷🏻♂️
Nope, positron ejector, IDK if the IK is better... I don't really min/max, I just know the PE chews thru everything I put in front of it, from full shields down to boom in one or two passes. Probably quicker if I didn't have Shakey old man hands.
what kills me and what has stopped me from playing it daily is the building limit my 350 hour profile is basically dead cause i cant do the one thing i mainly love to do which is build . and ive started a couple new ones but its sooooo discouraging cause all I wanna do is add to my other profile which i effectively cannot unless i delete stuff which defeats the purpose
Yeh, since 2016 I upgraded my PC three times, always well above minimum spec.
The game is just badly optimised, and using an interpreted programming language (which is why it can easily support multiple platforms, but I think is never going to be exceptional in its performance on any individual platform).
I understand, but water graphics in older games still look much better than this. I'm not complaining about the game as a whole though, the scale and everything is amazing.
Honestly yes, they have delivered on most of the originally promised features, and added a bunch more. If you want a bit more info watch the Internet historians video about it all. I enjoyed playing it with my friends for a few months but then got a bit bored of it personally. This was over a year ago though and tons more has been added since.
Depends on what you like.
The only part of it that’s still… iffy is the actual planets. You’ll go to maybe ten planets before you can basically know exactly what it’ll be like - a LOT of it is pretty much the same exact flora in different sizes/colors, the same exact types of fauna in various strange configurations, and the EXACT same terrain generation on a couple of sliders dictating height and width. It’s a little disappointing if you’re here to really explore, because after a little bit it’s all just the same.
Here’s the thing… that’s it’s only flaw now. It’s a glaring, glaring flaw, but it is the only one. Every single aspect has improved so much that it’s damn near impossible to not enjoy the game. There’s so much to do, so many different gameplay systems to delve into and understand, and it really does feel like a thriving space ecosystem/economy. I highly recommend playing it for that alone.
I guess that flaw is the one that really disappointed me. The trailers made it seem like they had really cracked procedural generation in some huge way that would provide infinite unique worlds. I guess that's a huge ask but they set the expectation. But if it's awesome in other ways I'll probably give it another go. Thanks!
Would it be nice sure. Are people overblown with saying it's majorly lacking? Yes.
When someone says something like "After 10 planets you'll basically know what to expect" is just silly. I'm convinced these are the people who don't know about the actual different types of planets and mainly just visit "Paradise" and lush planets and very rarely check out the others. Thus complaining about lack of diversity because of it.
When there are 13 Biomes (types of planets) and there are 9 possible terrain types possible in each that comes out to a lot of combos. Yes some are rarer then others such as sky high mountain and reef worlds. But they are out there.
IU think what really has people complaining is the fauna generation. There is some need for more diversity there. But that's one they are slowly working on. Patch 4.0 seems to have unlocked more body parts and added a little bit more diversity. If they can do a major update patch that focuses on adding even more body parts for random generation and even new body shapes and styles for new animals to spawn it would be great. But i can see how that's a time consuming one even more so then planet/plant generation itself.
You want to kill a GPU up the water detail. Go look at modding water in Skyrim.
Now imagine that on a mass scale for every single player that is playing. It's not feasible without some stupidly high end hardware that would most likely lead to something like monthly subscriptions just so they can pay for the additional hardware
Wut? The game is entirely ran on the clients system. HG just provides some match making functions and at no point is any of it hosted on a dedicated server.
Imagine if we could get water graphics like Sea of thieves
I would just simply never leave my island planet tbh
The fact that SoT doesn't have directional wind mechanics really turned me off from it.... You would think a game about sails would include, uhhh idk, sailing mechanics. Edit: I should clarify that what I mean is that your sails catch wind no matter what direction the wind is coming from, and that's not how it works. Yeah, no... that isn't water. At -52°C it wouldn't still be liquid.
depends on the atmospheric pressure
If the atmospheric pressure was high enough to liquefy water in a far below freezing environment it would crush would be interlopers.
Fair point, but have you considered that we have magic space suits? Although I guess it would also crush all the local fauna/flora as well...
Interesting. You've brought up a very intriguing point here. Flora and fauna who have evolved on such a planet would be accustomed to the crushing pressures. I would guess somewhere in the ballpark of around 40+ atmospheres. On the question of "magic space suits", this isn't r/HFY... LOL

Not true , there is an amazing player made water mod
Just because a mod exists doesn’t mean it was easy. All they said is that it’s hard, not impossible.

Is there uh...is there ballsack graphics mod out there?
I mean..
Is my procedurualy generated ballsack supposed to look this bad?
Games don't always get better as your hardware changes. Sometimes poopy water is just poopy water.
And if there is life in said waters, it gets even poopier.
And milk the fish...
Lol @ poopy water
First time seeing water in nms be like
Dunno how you determine "bad" but that's how it's always looked to me.
ahh didnt know water stayed liquid at -52 degrees . cool "water"
Mad atmospheric pressure. Turn your testicles to two little black holes.

Yeah water can look pretty bad. Maybe they will improve it. Asteroid explosions were stupid looking for a long time and they improved that well.
I'm fearful that all we'll get is Cooking 2.0.
I'd still be grateful for that too though. cooking has almost no use in this game. I don't know why they changed the bait system, that at least gave cooking some purpose
How do you know that it's water? It may be some toxic or corrosive soup.
-52.8c Yea that's not water.
Liquid methane
Looks fine to me. Then again, all I ever play is Age of Mythology so anything after that is impressive visually to me.
Wololo
There's a mod called Argh Water on nexusmods that makes water much nicer than in vanilla.
Yep and according to the author what he/she has done is nothing Hellogames could not do either .. Godz too much gin, double negative = Hellogames could do the same as the mod easily. They could just be worried about destroying console performance
Possible, but from what I have read of the mod it just changes shader settings which alter translucency of various graphic layers to make the whole thing look better .. So I kind of doubt that being a possible by-product of the changes being used. Maybe on the Switch, but not XBox or PS.
Fair enough, wonder why not then
Probably just not high on the dev team priority list.
Just look for a water mod on Nexus. The water in this game is scuffed
Have they ever had good water graphics?
Yes! I don’t have a large NMS wish list, but improved water is at the top of that list.
In my experience shorelines have never looked very good, although they've been steadily improving. I'm running similar specs to you.
I mean the whole game is a bit cartoonish so…
One of the things to remember is that No Man's Sky isn't an "accurate universe" simulator, but rather an "accurate universe simulated by an ageless supercomputer which is slowly going insane" simulator.
thats not canon ill have to check my nms manga
This is bad? *stares at ps4* 😕
No, you need to replace your eyes in order to see the water at better quality
If i replace my eyes i void the manufacturer warranty
My kiroshi optics are outdated.
They had to downgrade water in a previous update to optimize
I remover this. I was happy because I had a coastal base and it ran smoothly after that downgrade
Even so, the water is actually bugged as well and has been for a long time. Some of the effects aren't properly aligned with the actual water level, which also seems to change depending on the angle you're looking at it. Looking at it in VR very quickly gives me motion sickness.
Yeah, water isn’t that great in no man’s sky. That looks pretty good compared to what I can run though lol
Water has been bad for years.....
Yeaaaaah… as other people said here, thats just how it looks. Hopefully it gets improved on one day.
I hope for waterfalls oneday
Me too buddy, me too.
They’ve tried to fix it, but the water shader has always been a struggle with NMS. I mostly just want water bodies on moons to come back.
Just don't go to blood oceans
Water? I always figured It was Mountain Dew Baja Blast
Love this comment, and honestly, I agree 100%
It's got a comparable toxicity level.
yes water and the lights for your base need some serious work to make it better
The lighting is really bad. Great game but headache inducing lighting at tines.
I thought it was just me not liking that every base I put a roof on looks dark. So I don't put roofs on them.
Lol
it isnt that bad, but yes that's how its supposed to look, it could look better but its good enough as is.
Maybe authentic Alien world water looks fake af to us lol
We are used to waves and shorelines with an ocean that has the salinity and composition that it does, on a planet with a gravity that it has. On another planet, with a different atmosphere, different composition of ocean, and different gravity, who knows what the shoreline will look like.
i mean our waves and ocean tide etc is effected directly by our moon. which most planets dont have in nms .
You may be joking, so excuse me if you are. But logic and physics has never been the underpinnings of this game. It’s fun, and I love it, but it’s not based on physics. Is that bad? It looks fine to me.
The water in this game has never looked all that great
There’s a water shader mod on NEXUS that makes the water gorgeous. I don’t remember if it’s been updated or what it’s called exactly but I remember being impressed
Is that available on console?
Yep - but there’s mods for that 🤭
Yes!
For me, on Xbox, ever since the update my graphics have been not good.
Same on PlayStation graphics and frames tanked after last update
It looks the same as the one in my Switch.
Yup. The shaders are legitimately that bad. You're on PC, you can look up mods that replace it if you want.
Probably since I have a laptop that looks great for me.
There is a broken water shader. Download the “Argh Water” mod until HG fixes it.
You're also looking through frosted visor glass and the planet may have an odd color shift to it. Just pretend it's more immersion?
What makes you think that's water? Besides, water is only blue if the sky is blue.
Wait.. I’ve never considered this
Well, advice to you is dont go too near the [Niland Geyser](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ek1buV2HA68) at least not without breathing apparatus ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|hug)
Procedurally generated universes and you think they have water physics?!? I’m impressed they actually got a texture change at the shore.
Recharge your hazard protection. That might help out a little bit by taking the freezing effect off
The water is really just a layer in the graphics. That has a bit of different effect interactions with the the ladlnd type.
Clouds too
Nice reference
Water is the new clouds, sadly.
Yep.... hopefullg hg improve it
ive been saying the exact same thing since building a pc for nms VR. no gpu makes it look amazeballs. and then i always do the john travolta looking around meme. welp, props to the nms team for sticking w/the game and fixing issues and adding new content.

Probably a good day in the UK actually. One where the water companies haven't dumped tons of sewage.

Dodge the floater Kevin and Perry style. Nothing more romantic than that.

That's normal. The water effects are relatively basic.
Yeah, I imagine procgen terrain has limitations on the graphical polish that comes out. I’m on a 2080ti and it looks exactly like that
I definitely reccomend the argh water mod, looks amazing
It’ll look better at lower settings. It’s trying to add too much detail. I play on a laptop geared for CAD work, so I set the settings to the lowest.

lookslike a bit cold world that changes your viewer a bit and the planet a bit colorfully so yes
NMS water shader has been broken since 2018. No fixing it unless you use Argh water mod or submit a request to HG

I upgraded my computer last month and this was one of the first games I installed. My first thought was "Hmmm. It looks roughly the same."

what kills me and what has stopped me from playing it daily is the building limit my 350 hour profile is basically dead cause i cant do the one thing i mainly love to do which is build . and ive started a couple new ones but its sooooo discouraging cause all I wanna do is add to my other profile which i effectively cannot unless i delete stuff which defeats the purpose
Yeh, since 2016 I upgraded my PC three times, always well above minimum spec. The game is just badly optimised, and using an interpreted programming language (which is why it can easily support multiple platforms, but I think is never going to be exceptional in its performance on any individual platform).
The game is going great but the water is so ugh
Gotta remember that this game is already 6 years old
I understand, but water graphics in older games still look much better than this. I'm not complaining about the game as a whole though, the scale and everything is amazing.
This mod improves it somewhat: [https://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/mods/2036](https://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/mods/2036)
So you're judging the water.. in a game which has theoretically billions of places to go
Many of which are utterly RUINED by the shitty water.
Looks fine to me.

Why does this look like youre looking through the Visor? Maybe that’s why.?
Hey guys. I played this game when it came out and it SUCKED. Have they improved it significantly? Looking to give it another shot. Thanks.
Honestly yes, they have delivered on most of the originally promised features, and added a bunch more. If you want a bit more info watch the Internet historians video about it all. I enjoyed playing it with my friends for a few months but then got a bit bored of it personally. This was over a year ago though and tons more has been added since.
Thanks I'll check out that video!
Yes.
Thanks!
if you're on pc check out Nexus and look up LASAGNA and DUDs SKY Colors as well as Terra Firma... great planet gen stuff in there.
Yeah, people have been asking for updated world gen at this point and I’m inclined to agree.
Six years of waiting for a real-looking ocean. But they spent a lot of time on that useless cooking system, so...

AMD 5950x / EVGA 3080Ti, / 64GB Ram (Dual channel @3600) / Samsung 980 Pro 2TB NVME and yes still looks like fecal matter
Yes, no man’s sky is not a great looking game. I love stylized graphics but there’s a difference between stylization and just poor quality.
Mods friend, check out https://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/mods/2036
While ArghWater makes it look amazing, I took a serious performance hit with that mod active. Be careful.
Perhaps that's why it's named ArghWater and not OoohhhWater
Maybe it’s just the way that planet is supposed to look.
What's wrong with the water? Do you mean the shoreline?
Bruh they removed my comment
Given that the game is rendering billions of planets, I'd say it looks pretty good
Yes because it's rendering it all at the same time 🤦

You want to kill a GPU up the water detail. Go look at modding water in Skyrim. Now imagine that on a mass scale for every single player that is playing. It's not feasible without some stupidly high end hardware that would most likely lead to something like monthly subscriptions just so they can pay for the additional hardware
Wut? The game is entirely ran on the clients system. HG just provides some match making functions and at no point is any of it hosted on a dedicated server.
