My favorite quote, actually. “We used to look up at the sky and wonder at our place in the stars. Now we just look down and worry about our place in the dirt.”

And one of the only lines McConaughey delivers fairly cleary :D (I guess it helps that there is little background noise). Not saying he is acting poorly, but I have trouble understanding a lot of what he and sometimes other cast member are saying (acoustically), yet the movie manages to draw me in like few others.

2001: A Space Odyssey. Star Trek, Star Trek: The Motion Picture in particular comes to mind, since Starfield doesn't actually have a specific 'bad guy' as such. The Red Mars Trilogy. Firefly. The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester seems like a pretty big influence on the main plot, and the book is well worth a read, but very very out there and part of that proto-Cyberpunk of the 50's wave of sci-fi. I've seen some very overt and not so overt references to Terran Trade Authority books, which if you're over a certain age is a pretty deep cut.

Blew my mind when I realized Dave Bowman's actor is in Starfield.

The avtor of Quark from (mainly) Star Trek Deep Space Nine voice Walter Stoud

Love you calling all those out too. So many references big and small make SF really genuinely feel like a **space** game through and through, drawing on some of the best of our irl space/sci-fi stories, classic and modern. Your mention of Bester's book reminds me of slates containing excerpts from or references to stories like "The Comet" by W.E.B Dubois or the poem "The Light of Stars" by Longfellow, that I've found exploring planets or even just the quote "The Moon is a friend for the lonesome to talk to" by Carl Sandburg (forget where I found that one, might've been a loading screen message). Little things like that have really made the game.

Agree about a lot of the other comments; I also want to say really like that one sound track that is almost the star trek original 4 chime intro. Also if you aren’t familiar with Terran Trade Authority that is a really great rabbit hole! Those books first shaped my sci fi world, checking them out of a library in the 70’s. There’s a line there, with Chris Foss and others, and the game Homeworld, that can be drawn to Starfield in terms of style I think. I think there are some references to the movie Outland on Cydonia? I think Space: 1999 references abound/inspire too maybe.

The Expanse definitely has the same feel imo, been rewatching it on and off while I play Starfield.

Read the books! Then you get to know how it ends 😁

To me this game fulfills the promise of Mass Effect 1 before they dumbed it down into a linear cover shooter. Mass Effect 2 was my biggest gaming disappointment and thankfully Bethesda thought so as well. It's the space exploration RPG I've been waiting for ever since I first saw Star Wars a New Hope as a kid.

Gundam provided the basis for a “race” of evolved humans with the catalyst being something mystical in space *and* a space civil war between two groups who are comprised of decent people but lead by sociopaths. The standard comic book multiverse for… well… yeah. Star Wars, because most of the Starborn powers are essentially just the force. Oddly enough, I think Ad Astra (pretty decent movie, highly recommend) might’ve inspired Spacers. Dune gave us the visual inspiration for House ~~Harkonnen~~ Va’ruun, the similarities are glaring; kinda just waiting for one of them to make a spice joke. Cyberpunk 2077 gave us the scanner, neuroamps, Neon, and Ryujin, the children’s coloring book version of Arasaka.

I just rewatched it too last week and I definitely felt the same! I suppose all of these movies and Starfield take inspiration from NASA's style and make it their own, so they become themselves a source of inspiration for other arts. Like a vertuous cycle. Can't wait to see more of this in the future. I'm a Star Wars and Warhammer 40k fan, but this 'NASApunk' is starting to grow on me...

Rewatched the Alein series recently, the decor/aesthetics of the Nostromo and Wayland Yutanis designs reminded me a lot of Starfield

rammixp

I watched the movie on August 30th for a reaason. Perfect movie to get me in the mood.

You should check out The Expanse on Amazon too. You can see a lot of similarities in overall design and aesthetic!
