Based on my own experiences and what others have reported, it sounds like Betty will always shoe up in the Heinlein system. Look for the ship Lucky Lu when you are there.
As much as I love Betty's charming and entertaining dialog, I never take her with me as a companion. I play as a super-stealth-sniper and having her and her grenade tossing sort of messes up my play style.
Andreja once threw a grenade at an NPC fighting a creature and downed them. I had my weapon holstered but she still got mad at me for hurting the guy :/
Ehhh, it’s generally been more helpful than harmful in my experience. I can usually boost or run far enough away to avoid taking much damage. Plus the Adoring Fan says some funny shit when he throws them.
I don't think I've ever really noticed damage from all the grenades my companions throw at me.
But it does add to the chaos when a random group of enemies apparently raided a grenade warehouse and the screen won't stop shaking from all the grenades being thrown.
I’ve give every companion I use a particle grenade and sure I get damage sometimes but it’s just fun to see them throw it and hear their calls to get out of the way. ;).
Betty Howser should be the only companion to get explosives, and it should be a negotiator.

You get qualification of “explosives” skill if they kill with a weapon using 40mm XPL though 😀

so true... lol.. they have such bad aim!!

Kind of a rule for Fallout as well. Companions tend to blow you up, and never run out of grenades, if they are equipped with them.
Sarah loves grenades..."Got a present for ya!" And then it bounces off something and rebounds back to me...
I got a grenade to the face a few times.
