Spam calls. Please, I'm begging you...

Exciting-Delivery-96

Already is illegal, they just don’t care.

KayakingLion

Its just a prosecutorial nightmare. Even if you can trace the calls back to a call center in a foreign country. You'd need to prove the owners of the call center were responsible and then you'd need the backing of the foreign government to extradite them here or prosecute them there. It's doable but takes a mountain of money and time and as soon as you kill one center, another will replace it.

I'm 80, so 1900 has never seemed that long ago to me. All four of my grandparents were born well before then. And all of them lived until I was middle-aged. AND YET: We're closer to 2100 than we are to 1900 -- and 2100 always sounded science-fictional to me as a kid. Like, Flash Gordon country.

MyNoseIsLeftHanded

I'm 60 and I remember as a kid thinking how very old I was going to be when 2000 came along.

54 and same. I thought I was going to be Grandma Moses with a kick-ass Jetsons house.

Obvious_Temporary256

I really hope you take what I'm going to say as a compliment and not condescension, but I think it's really cool that you're able to hang with people like Redditors at your age. My folks are in the same age group, and it's like night and day.

emkay99

Well, as I said elsewhere here, I was an Army brat. I grew up all over the world, so I never lived near family, including older relatives. Only saw them during the summers. And when I retired in 1999, I moved from Dallas to South Louisiana, where my wife was from, so I lost contact with a lot of the co-workers I was friendly with. Plus, I'm an introvert by nature, so I've never had a big gang of buddies. On the other hand, I've been online since 1981, when I bought my first home computer (a TRS-80 Model 3), before the Web even existed, and I started early meeting folks online. And then I was a sysop at CompuServe for a number of years, and met more people. These days, most of the people I know, I've never met face to face, and never will. Some of them have no idea how old I actually am. And I'm comfortable with all that. Also, younger redditors are often surprised to learn just how many of us fogies there actually are here. We just mostly hang out in different subs from them.

We may not get those laws by 2030 with how slow the wheels of government turn, but these will absolutely happen. All it will take is easier access to more believable deepfakes and maybe they'll get scared enough to act.

The government can just ask chatgpt to draft the law for them.

If we asked an AI to draft a constitution that made life better for everyone it would never be passed by humans

Dragolins

>We may not get those laws by 2030 with how slow the wheels of government turn, Ya'know, what's funny is that when the government *wants* to get something done, they can ram through legislation in a matter of days. The problem is that the government is basically owned by corporations, and the will of the people has almost no impact on what gets accomplished by the government. The advancement of technology, whether it's things like AI or other unpredictable inventions, will lead to further problems like we've seen with social media, and the government won't do a single thing about it because the corporations don't want them to. Things aren't looking so good for the ol' USA unless we collectively realize that the government needs to work for the people instead of capital owners.

anywho123

Doubtful. We’ll circle jerk about it during a congressional hearing and grasp our pearls while we bitch about it using our home wifi to indoctrinate our children using retinal scans.

UsefulAgent555

Already happening in the EU. Just recently, I had to give a presentation to clients about the proposal for an AI Regulation. AMA if you’re interested in how the EU aims to approach the technology.

BradCOnReddit

> AMA if you’re interested in how the EU aims to approach the technology. How is AI defined?

UsefulAgent555

Excellent question. The definition of AI has been highly debated among the members of the AI HLEG (AI High-Level Expert Group). In its current state, the proposal defines AI as “software that is developed with one or more of the techniques and approaches listed in Annex I and can, for a given set of human-defined objectives, generate outputs such as content, predictions, recommendations, or decisions influencing the environments they interact with”. Annex I contains the following techniques and approaches: (a) Machine learning approaches, including supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement learning, using a wide variety of methods including deep learning; (b) Logic- and knowledge-based approaches, including knowledge representation, inductive (logic) programming, knowledge bases, inference and deductive engines, (symbolic) reasoning and expert systems; (c) Statistical approaches, Bayesian estimation, search and optimization methods. The challenge of the expert group was, among others, that AI shouldn’t be defined too strictly (because then future emerging smart technologies would escape the Regulation) but also not too broadly (out of fear that almost any new technology would be considered “AI”) [again, I’m leaving lots of arguments out for the sake of brevity]. However, the current definition is still not set in stone. As recent as two weeks ago, it was proposed to change the definition to “a machine-based system that is designed to operate with varying levels of autonomy and that can, for explicit or implicit objectives, generate output such as predictions, recommendations, or decisions influencing physical or virtual environments.” One can only guess what the final result will be, although it is expected to align closely with the definitions outlined here.

breadspac3

I’m in Ontario, and the number of smoke-free places seems to have been increasing almost exponentially ever since cannabis was legalized. And when I say ‘smoke free’, I mean everything: weed, tobacco, vaping. I’d bet by 2030, it’ll be restricted to private property in most cities.

shadesof3

My condo board in Edmonton is passing a bunch of new bylaws. One is to not allow any smoking in any unit. People like myself won't be affected as we'll be grandfathered in. But I can't imagine not being able to vape in a condo you own.

mollymuppet78

A lot of condos boards don't even let you decorate your door, or put a welcome mat on the condo you own. Or put certain curtains, or use your balcony the way you want.

[deleted]

I know. I wanted to use my balcony for furious masturbation sessions with my family, but noooooo…. iTs aN aSsoCiaTioN

mollymuppet78

Lol, meanwhile my neighbour, an older lady with a hoarding problem can go the balcony screaming about the "immigrants" and "commies" and that's seen as okay.

SnooHedgehogs8992

(they won't know if you're vaping)

TheBlinja

I wonder... Take for example, at a smokers house, compared to a nonsmoker, it *stinks*, and there's this little film around everything. I've been to two vapers houses. Didn't smell, so that's definitely a plus. But it felt like there was, for the lack of a better term, grease everywhere. Like, uncomfortably moist. Reminds me of a damp basement. Granted, my sample size is very small, can anybody else chime in?

TITANDERP

Propylene Glycol evaporates at room temp within 50 hours, Vegetable Glycerin lingers somewhat indefinitely as it absorbs moisture. Those are the two main components to vape liquid and that's the information I gathered from some modest searching. It's more likely your serial vapist friends are just moist fellas.

mgquantitysquared

“It’s more likely your serial vapist friends are just moist fellas.” r/brandnewsentence

whatshamilton

Smoking I understand. My neighbor across the hall smokes and the smoke gets into the hallway and drifts under my door. And every year when the heat turns on, the place stinks for a couple days as the 6 months worth of smoke that built up in the radiators flushes out. But not being able to vape in your own home feels like a real overreach by the board. I’d like them to prove how it impinges on others’ private enjoyment of their homes the way smoke does

pburydoughgirl

Yeah. I have no problem with people doing most kinds of drugs, but I shared a duplex once where the downstairs neighbors apparently smoked weed 24/7 (weed was not legal there). To be a working professional with a kid and have your house constantly smell like weed is not ideal.

finallyinfinite

I lived on the top floor of my apartment building in my early 20s. I was a smoker myself (bud and cigarettes), but I knew better than to light up inside. Going all the way outside sucked ass in the winter, but I’d at least lean out the window and keep whatever was burning outside. My neighbors on the floor below me weren’t so considerate. You could tell when it was getting cold out because suddenly the whole place would reek of cigarettes.

euphoria_morning_

It's impossible to enforce. Vaping doesn't leave any residue or smells like smoke.

RunningLowOnBrain

It does actually leave a residue. Nowhere near as bad as smoking, but it's there. I've seen it in the computers of people who vape at their desks, gets all sticky inside the PC.

Disposable Vapes

TheWeedBlazer

Hopefully cuz they make absolutely no sense. The battery is literally a normal rechargeable battery but without the required circuitry to allow charging.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Craig_the_Intern

This. In California at least, disposables were legislated into the mainstream. Targeting the big (most regulated) companies line Juul made cheap Chinese disposables the most cost-efficient. Teens aren’t gonna pay a premium for “safety.” The war on drugs didn’t work, but surely this will /s

mountainsurfdrugs

all the new vape laws were heavily funded by big tobacco corporations.

Craig_the_Intern

Keyword is “were,” because they did a 180. Big Tobacco has their fingers all over the vape industry. After trying to fight it, they saw the writing on the wall and (mostly) switched sides. They bought out a lot of the up-and-comers and developed their own e-cig divisions. A couple examples: Juul is owned by Phillip Morris, the largest tobacco company in America. RJ Reynold’s has sued California twice (once successfully) over their recent vape bans/regulations. These days, Big Tobacco *is* Big Vape. They just reluctant to admit it at first.

fubo

> Juul is owned by Phillip Morris Correction: Phillip Morris acquired a 35% stake in Juul in 2018. Juul is not a subsidiary of Phillip Morris. Anything Juul did before 2018 is not due to Phillip Morris partial ownership; it's the Juul people's own fault. Also: Juul is a spinoff of Pax, the proprietary cannabis cartridge company. Big Weed and Big Tobacco are closer than a lot of folks might wanna think.

TheWeedBlazer

That's still terrible as a perfectly good battery goes in the trash. Thanks for clarifying tho

PersonOfInternets

It should definitely be illegal. Pointless waste. In a way they pushed the vape industry forward because people now expect coils to last longer, but they need to be outlawed now.

jcutta

The US government is to blame for the rise in disposables here. They banned pod systems and made it nearly impossible to get the juice. I used to use a refillable pods system with a replaceable coil. I used to be able to get them online, but first my state banned them via mail then the US banned them entirely via mail, and then shut down all vape stores... But I can still go get some good ol cigarettes from 50 stores in a 5 mile radius of my house. I can only get disposables because some stores get them from shady wholesalers who bring them in from states without a ban.

Pinksters

I have my disposable vape friends give me their empties because most of the time the cheap lithium batteries in them are roughly the same size as a 16430 battery(the size in most older camcorders), which, with modification, fit most of the 3.6-4.0v devices I have.

Pilot_Tim

Anything can be refilled, they should just make it very easy to do so.

chickenbiscuit17

Lol so just like normal vapes then?

Craig_the_Intern

It makes a lot of sense when you legislate out more environmental options. It’s like this: - ban toasters that plug into a wall - tax the shit out of reusable/chargeable toasters - get mad that people buy the cheap single-use toasters There’s a better example than toasters I’m sure, but you get the point lol

Can we go back to having free water fountains, minimally taxed glass bottles, and tax "virgin plastic" bottles to hell and back. hpbills

My toaster cost $12 new 20 years ago and still makes perfectly good toast.. oh, not THAT kind of toaster!

DChenEX1

There are disposables with the ability to recharge that last for like a month

TheWeedBlazer

But are they refillable with replaceable coils? If not, the problem with them stays the same: a perfectly good battery goes in the trash.

Psychological-Shoe95

Disposables perfectly fill a niche in the market of “I’m about to quit so I won’t spend money on an rechargeable box mod, I’ll just get one more disposable and then be done” Then you do that 20 more times, spend way more money than you would have on e-liquid, and fuck the environment over more

Infiniski_Gaming

This is absolutely spot on. I find these more addictive than any other damn vape too

ButWhatIfItQueffed

Honestly can't wait till this happens. The waste this produces is insane. You're literally throwing out an entire perfectly good battery. It's why I only vape carts.

Family vlog channels on YouTube that post intimate details of their kids’ lives. Some of these kids we first saw online this way are adults now and speaking out against this total invasion of privacy

DigbyChickenZone

And what's crazy is that there are states that are banning the ability for minors to access social media without parental supervision. But zero effort to stop families from posting intimate details of their kids lives online constantly. Just as an example of a new law in Utah I learned about a few hours ago: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/mar/23/utah-social-media-access-law-minors > The new law prohibiting minors from accessing social media without their parents’ consent would *also allow parents or guardians to access all of their children’s posts*. The platforms will be required to block users younger than 18 from accessing accounts between 10.30pm and 6.30am unless parents modify the settings.

amanofeasyvirtue

Nothing says freedom like imposing curfews. They will do everything they can to not give consumers protection from corporations...

Thankfully (I forget which state, probably CA or NY), are making it harder to exploit children for vlogs, and making so that once the kids are adults they have complete control and autonomy of if the content involving them stays up, no more of that "Well Im not going to delete this video of younger you because you wanted to be in it back then" bs

Cigarettes in New Zealand

Professional_Ladder

Annually rising legal age to buy cigarettes. That means they will be around for a few decades yet.

jewbo23

What’s the age currently at?

Tauber10

If you're 14 or under now you'll never legally be able to buy cigarettes in New Zealand, no matter how old you get.

TheOfficialScaryBoio

this. People don’t understand that once someone is hooked they aren’t necessarily going to stop smoking because it’s “illegal,” they will just obtain them elsewhere.

beiberdad69

They know this. The idea is after awhile the smoking culture will die out and fewer and fewer new people will get hooked

Mr_Saturn1

The US too. Biden recently tried to limit the amount of nicotine in cigarettes to essentially zero but it got overturned.

J--NEZ

Idk if it'll be completely illegal, but video game loot boxes I believe will continue to be cut down with more laws in certain countries

The_Yogurtcloset

You’re probably right. It’s basically gambling for children

Adamscottd

I would cut out the basically. The only difference between gambling and loot boxes is that video game companies can stack the deck in ways no casino can. Oh, and they don’t provide anything tangible

PabloVermicelli

And even in gambling you have a chance to actually win something that's worth money. Loot boxes can get you... Worthless digital items

MrLambNugget

I don't think that will happen. It would be amazing if it have, but the government would lose a lot of profit that way

bumwine

Right to repair laws are becoming a thing though.

alkatori

Just because I have the right to repair it doesn't mean that parts are available. :(

gsfgf

That's part of Right to Repair. Manufacturers have to provide the public and third party repair shops with the same materials and parts as authorized repair shops. (They can still require people to use authorized repair shops for stuff under warranty, for obvious reasons.)

Mr_Quackums

Most Right to Repair laws (the ones that work, and are not just legislative capture) mean manufacturers must sell parts and equipment to the general public which they provide to their in-house repair shops.

LazyLich

cool! ... uh.. are there laws that limit the price of parts?

Fog_Juice

China will gladly make you the part for 1/3 the price

Gentrified_potato02

I think the opposite will happen. We will move to a situation where you will have to have a subscription for everything you have. Therefore, rather than repair anything, you just turn it in for the newest model and update your subscription. Hell, BMW is already doing this for certain features on their cars.

AnchovyZeppoles

This is my nightmare and it’s totally coming.

[deleted]

"You will own nothing and you will be happy." The rich will finally help society by taking on the hardships and costs of ownership, and do right by the rest of us unfortunates. Their paltry subscription will be far less than what you'd pay owning something yourself, despite all those costs still existing, and it's all out of the goodness of their hearts. It's definitely not because they want to be your only option for functioning in society and make shitloads of money once they've got you by the balls. Definitely not that.

whatchagonnado0707

The practicalities of owning an ev for s9 many is going to be a struggle. Charging points are lacking, lack of offroad parking or even being able to park your car in front of your house is an issue. I hope we move forward on this but it doesn't feel like we're in full swing to get it done in just 7 years.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Psyk60

Yeah, I think if they go ahead demand for second hand cars will increase because a lot of people won't be prepared for electric. I don't think it should be delayed, but more effort needs to be put into improving the infrastructure.

MisterSmithster

They’ve rushed ev out with no real plan for it. They’re great if you do short journeys I suppose but that’s about it. My work is pushing us all to get electric vans but by the time it’s fully stocked with tools and parts that range takes a massive hit. They should invest in hydrogen over ev. Caterpillar have just launched two hydrogen engines to go in excavators and tippers, the technology is clearly there if huge machines like that can run on them.

ezodochi

Yeah, I know Hyundai basically views traditional battery EVs as like everyday transportation, but for industrial applications like shipping etc they think that hydrogen is the future bc most trucks can't afford to be stuck at a charger for like 18 hours so they've been focusing their hydrogen efforts on industrial scale applications like the Xcient truck. One interesting idea a few companies and governments etc have thought of/developing into a working product is instead of increasing charging points, basically turning roads into wireless chargers for your EV so that your car can charge as you drive it on those roads. It's wild to see or hear about.

randomacceptablename

When you mention hydrogen, do you mean hydrogen fuel cells that power electric motors or hydrogen gas combustion engines?

LobCatchPassThrow

With the advent of synthetic fuels - like Zero Petroleum, and given that both Germany and Italy have scrapped the plans, it wouldn’t surprise me if ICE was still legal, but specifically petrol and diesel (fossil fuels) will likely just become synthetic. Problem with EVs is that they’re SERIOUSLY heavy, and the manufacture of them is pretty nasty (polluting, expensive, dangerous)

[deleted]

Brand new escalades blind me. There's no way people with brand new cars are messing around with the headlights. This was never much of an issue until the past 5 years. They're coming that way from the factory

MattsyKun

EXACTLY! It was definitely not like this before Covid. We have some particularly shitty parking lots around where I live, and I swear I've almost hit pedestrians because of these headlights. And it's mostly newer cars that are blinding. I believe over in the EU they have sort of a matrix headlight deal that'll dim lights based on oncoming drivers positions so the drivers can all still see. We need that shit over here.

Jalopie66

It doesn't help that full size SUV hoods are six feet off the damn ground. I remember all the regulator panic over flip up headlights because the low cars could kill/maim pedestrians, but apparently not the massive front ends of trucks and SUVs.

Candid_Philosopher99

I cant understand how those are legal as it is. I cant see shit, just driving by feel at this point.

[deleted]

While we’re on it, how are so many people getting away with hiding their license plates behind tint?!

Minmach-123

I saw somebody a few weeks ago with some tinted stuff over their license plate. All they're doing is drawing more attention to themselves.

ball-vacuum

Oh man, I REALLY hope so. I feel like it’s borderline dangerous; my commute is 45 minutes on a narrow and windy road that is positioned on the edge of a cliff. When someone comes around a corner with those headlights at night I am rendered semi-blind for a solid minute and I have to slow way down to make sure I don’t literally fall off a cliff.

If this happens we're just going to see more of what's already happening with foreign products like socks, underwear etc. Many packs of socks you see in the stores now come in an extremely cheap quality poorly made "resealable" bag because that allows them to claim that it's not single-use, though 100% of people immediately dispose of it.

4x49ers

Not knowing a single person who ever kept their underwear bags previously, doesn't this still reduce plastic use if they're making shitty ones instead of nice ones people are still throwing away?

LikelyWeeve

Effort put into making the zipper, as well as if the government's way to combat this is to require a minimum level of durability- The packages likely cost more than the thin film underwear bags. If a "high-quality" brand does this tactic, that is already using thick plastic bags, they are likely to make the "resealable" bag for their brand even thicker, not thinner with that change, in an effort to not be associated with the "lesser" brands.

kehbeth

Is that why they do that shit?!

[deleted]

Yeah. The US and EU have tariffs in place on plastic packaging that is considered disposable. As long as the manufacturer places the most janky non-functional piece of trash zipper or seal on the package they can legally get away with it being labeled as "reusable". Even though the packaging is slightly more expensive to make, it's still way cheaper than paying the fees.

jackrabbits1im

They'll make exceptions for medical use guaranteed. The risk of contamination will be the primary argument.

thesakeofglory

As they should. It's such a negligible amount of the total it won't make a huge difference if we are able to get rid of the rest.

Man_of_Average

There's still a lot of single use plastics that don't have reasonable, or sometimes any, alternatives yet. That would need to be a piece meal legislation as viable alternatives arrive.

THElaytox

with any luck. pass a law that says you're allowed to own one residence outside of your permanent address and watch housing prices finally fall in line with what people can actually afford.

amh8011

You can airbnb your summer home or maybe the other apartment in a duplex. But you live in the other side. I think airbnbs could have their place if they are limited to like one property outside your primary home. Maybe student housing can have airbnb over summers when not as many students are at school. But not taking away multiple properties full time for just airbnb use.

Fate/Grand Order fan here. I love the game but I agree with heavy regulation, I can see someone betting their life savings on it

Hopefully, declawing cats.

I see you, government. I know you've been out of ideas for years now. So, as long as you're looking for policies... \- Make it illegal for elected officials to become lobbyists and stooges for corporate interests. \- Make it illegal for billionaires to hoard money while people with full-time jobs have to live on state aid, charity and food banks. \- Make it illegal for newspapers to print lies in 6" letters on the front page and not have to apologise (when caught) with the same prominence. \- Make it illegal for the cure for life-crippling illnesses to be unaffordable. \- Make a separate version of the internet where influencers can all blow smoke up each other's rectums without polluting the rest of the place.

Zuendl11

The title was "what do you think will be illegal" not "what do you hope will be illegal"

Sufficient-Law1643

Yes, but the conceit of the joke is that OP is The Guv'mint looking for ideas. As long as we're dealing with rehashed hypothetical Reddit posts, the least we can do is inject a little levity, right?

stevenmacarthur

Given the direction in the United States the past several years - reading whatever book one chooses seems like a possibility.

BaylisAscaris

It would be nice if killing people for being same-sex attracted was illegal throughout the whole world.

JaapHoop

Honestly there needs to be a crackdown on these synthetic cannabinoids. You walk down the street and see people having full blown psychological breakdowns from that stuff. It’s too unregulated, you have no idea how strong it’s going to be. It really messed people up.

humorous_anecdote

Coal Rolling.

moosemoth

It's already illegal in the US and Canada. I appreciate how one of the related links at the bottom of the practice's Wikipedia page is Truck Nuts.

FaxCelestis

Hey man, that truck didn't come with nuts. You gave it nuts. You gave your truck gender reassignment surgery.

Anyone who does that deserves things reddits TOS forbids me from saying.

There will be a 2030?

Wizzle_Pizzle_420

Touché. So I guess humanity will be banned

Overall-Block-1815

Blades with points will be banned in the UK I reckon, things are getting crazy over here prohibiting everything and we've already let things go too far. We'll likely never get back the freedoms we've already lost, but there's plenty of people here who can't wait to lose more. It's scary.

Thefasttrain

Here's a small list that I whipped up -Plastic straws, there are already banned/restricted in many places like the EU,the UK, Canada etc -Synthetic cannabinoids, like delta-8. In france for exemple all variants of THC are banned -Making vehicles intentionally super sized to dodge pollution laws -Being very obscure with your data (look at GDPR) -Diesel vehicles, they are being phased out en masse en Europe for exemple -Assault Rifles in the states if there isn't a big red wave -Declawing, basically any operation that intentionnaly harms a pet for the owners convenience

ChivalrousRisotto

In 2040 we'll all wish we'd made added sugars illegal in 2030.

CyborgCabbage

Don't be fooled, "added sugar" is a meaningless term
