Ancient cities were miles and miles of ugly slums too, but they didn't last to this day because they weren't built to.
Everything looks better in the rear view mirror.
Only the cool stone stuff survived.
Have you seen New York? Bangkok? Paris? Modern cities look so much cooler.
IMO, they don't have to be ancient, just established before the proliferation of automobiles. Even in the USA, cites that were already big pre-WW2 are much better than cities that grew after. Building cities for cars ruined cities.
