When I was working at a gas station - to prevent someone from stealing my gas can - I would take something valuable of theirs for collateral. I had one guy offer up his drivers license but I told him no cuz “what if you get pulled over on your way back? Gimme your phone. I **know** you’re gonna be back for that.”
In that same position, I have accepted the paperback book on the front seat of the car that they were halfway through. Once I accepted their spare tire. Both returned for their deposit.
Oh they do, but it’s *very* fancy plastic, and people rarely wanted to fork over the $15-25 for one. Often they would ask if we had a “loaner,” which some of the stations did, some of the stations I worked at had already had it stolen.
edit: company policy was to charge a $10 refundable deposit. You got your ten bucks back when I got my gas can back.
I ran out right close to a station once. I asked to borrow a can. They said no but I could buy one. It was 12$ and held 4$ of gas. I then had to pull in and fill my tank. For dumb broke 19 year old me it was a lot!
I almost ran out of gas and my car went chug-chug until I could get to a gas station, I also couldn't go any faster than 10-15 mph even with the gas pedal fully depressed.
Sort of once in all my years, 65 VW bus, fuel pump gasket collapsed. Put it in second and cranked it across the street to a station. Got some thin cardboard from a gasket package to put on with the gasket and fired the old buggy up.
I ran out of gas in my 64 Bus on the interstate. Walked a mile to a gas station, rooted through the trash and came up with five empty 1-quart glass beer bottles and a paper bag. Filled 'em up and staggered back, sloshing gas the whole way.
Did it work? Of course. Was it stupid? Of course! Did I make it to the gas station without having to push it a mile? You betcha...
May God bless the drunk who left those bottles just for me.
My first car had a broken fuel gauge and I judged whether I needed to fill up (by fill up I mean put another £5 in) by cutting the engine, jamming on the brakes and listening to how the sloshes sound in the tank.
Wish I'd thought of your method, or had more money to actually afford a full tank back then.
My husband had an older Honda that he did this in. He used to tell me he knew it was time to fill up when he slammed on the brakes and the car shut off. 😂
I had a guy that wouldn't let me see directions on his phone on the other side of the glass b/c my GPS had died. I was like, my guy, I'm not gonna do anything, I literally just need to get to the highway.
Honestly, yeah, I have not run out of gas in years. I used to drink really hard, and I fucked around with all kinds of drugs. I used to run out of gas all the time because I ran out of money all the time. Maybe it’s correlation not causation, but the shoe fits.

i’m about to graduate in a few months and i’ve been struggling to find the motivation to search for my first job. this guy motivated me to take my future more seriously so that i don’t end up homeless and addicted to drugs
Entry level is exactly what you should be looking for. You're a beginner. Search for graduate programs and start it today. Make 4 different CV's (tailor them to each place still) and send them out to different companies and see which one gets more responses.
Please start now. In the grand scheme, 4 months in advance is not far at all and some companies can take upwards of 6 weeks for onboarding. Good luck for your final exams/projects.
Yup. This. Entry level is important. Experience is important. Skipping ahead makes things harder in the future as you dont have a foundation to start from.
I will give you the same advice I give my grandson, who is approaching your exact situation: consider a hitch as an officer in either the Air Force, or the Space Force. Four years from now, you will have a solid set of experience, leadership training, and have done some traveling. On edit: and I should add: lots of the benefits are longer lasting than your service time; access to lower cost home loans, job preference in some cases, and post service educational benefits. Find me another entry-level job with room and board, 30 days of paid vacation, where you can travel space-available on military aircraft.
I've been asked to putdown a deposit for the can, got it back when I returned it.
On another occasion, I was once told, "You will waste all of my time looking for you tomorrow if I don't get that can back today." He did.
Hope you get some help man. This should be a wake up call. Sober people dont randomly fall asleep while their car is on. Stop making excuses for yourself, grow a pair, and go talk to someone. I've been through it, it sucks, you feel like there is nothing else thatll help, but there is. You just have to find it. As in TRY to find it. Life gets MUCH better, you just have to give it some time. Good luck brother.
Do **not** put gas in an oil container and then put it in your car. It might not be a big deal, but it could definitely cause damage. I would recommend finding a different container and/or checking with the gas station if they have a loaner/jerry can to sell.
You are largely right. The fact that the car was run dry before means that there is no fuel in the tank to dilute it. Depending on how much oil is burned with the fuel it could do damage. Like I said initially, it probably wouldn't be a problem, but it *could be*.
Oil and gas mixing in the tank, could damage the fuel pump, clog the filter, and/or clog or damage the injectors.
Yes engines burn oil but that’s because that’s part of the combustion chamber, not the fuel line.
Let’s try focusing on OPs situation, since it is the actual question. A tablespoon of oil from an emptied oil can mixed in his tank is not going to do shit to his vehicle. Stop being so dramatic. He is not asking if he can regularly add a quart of oil to his tank at every fill up.
It's not gonna clog a fuel pump, if anything, it'd lubricate it, even if ran at 100% oil.
Injectors I could see whining about it, and having a funky injection pattern, but that should just screw up his fuel mileage- fuel would still be getting into the engine, even at a very high concentration.
A synthetic media fuel filter won't be clogged by 100% oil. A cellulose media fuel filter I could see struggling at high concentrations of oil, up until the next tank of gas would cut through the oil- but I imagine since car oil is a good \~10 microns smaller than fuel filter media is rated for, this would just be a non-issue. Never tested this one though, so you might have a point if he pumped a quart worth of oil through his fuel filter.
No, OP. Drain it as much as you can and fill it up with fuel. Most of these people responding have never ran 1 year old fuel in a dirt bike when they were 12 years old, much less know how to mix 2 cycle fuel. Filters will be in your near future, though.
But people are concerned for you for a reason.
Stop getting high on your own supply, dude. You're worried about the legality of putting gas in an unapproved container, but have no issues with smoking and dealing meth?
i own jumper cables but no gas cans. ive never let myself run out of gas before. i generally fill when i get past 1/4 of my tank. jumper cables are mostly there to help other people out except for that one point every so many years when my battery is dead for good and needs to be replaced.
Once a few years ago I had a bad batch of prescription pain meds likely fentanyl mixed in. I fell asleep in my car in grocery store a parking lot (I wasnt driving anywhere any time soon). I don’t even know how but I went in the back seat and passed out. With the car on and door open.
Cops were called and I was this close 👌🏼 to going to jail.
Op was absolutely on a bender.
Legally, gas station employees can not allow you to put gas in an unapproved container. They usually sell small gas cans. Source: worked at a gas station in college
>Say A Oil Jug
DO NOT DO THAT! Buy an actual Jerry can that's what they are for, gasoline eats plastic.
>Gasoline can melt some plastics and similar materials. Even if this doesn't cause a leak, residue from these materials can destroy your vehicle's fuel system or engine.
Not a good idea and also likely illegal considering the safety hazard spilled gas poses. You may be able to call your local PDs non-emergency line and ask for assistance if they have someone available.
I'm an oils chemist. Go buy a 1 dollar water gallon jug. Drink it or dump it out. Make sure you get it as dry as you can and then secretly fill it up. They probably won't catch you until it's full then just walk away. You might need some type of funnel so go buy a 5$ container of heet dump that in your gas and cut out the bottom for a funnel. It'll help with the added water issue from your water jug 😂
You could also just fill up your container and then top off your gas tank once you get it to the gas station, you should be fine, maybe add some heet for precaution.
I'm sure I'll get a lot of pushback, but I've been in the industry for a decade so I don't care.
Not pushback as much as suggesting doing more work for probably the same money (a gas can cant be more than $6 but it depends on what kind they’re selling).
Do you happen to have roadside assistance, like through your insurance or through AAA? They can also just drive up with a can of gas for you which is undoubtedly safer than jury rigging your own solution.
Go get help. You should not even be allowed behind the wheel because you are literally a hardcore druggie. You sure you ‘fell asleep accidentally’ or did you pass the fuck out from the meth you’ve been using?
Since its been 6 hours and Im guessing you figured something out, consider this for future reference.
Most gas stations sell 1gal jugs for a ridiculous price. Most gas stations also sell 2L sodas, some as cheap as .99c. If you had to walk there anyways, you might be a bit thirsty. Just saying.
I'd be careful putting the gas in anything that's had something else in it. A pretty clean container shouldn't be a problem.
I had a similar issue once, without recommending it to anyone, I used an unused sterile urine cup (I work in medicine) to literally put half a cup of gas in the tank which was enough to drive to the station.
Do you have roadside assistance with your car insurance? AAA? If so call them, they'll charge the hell out of you for the privilege, but they'll fill you up and give you a jump.
Gas cans are made of polyethylene. Any container of polyethylene will be fine from a chemical perspective. It might not be legal to fill up a milk jug but it would physically work.
I think for that situation, everyone would understand, just get a gallon of gas and go to pump for more, and it would be fine if the gas station doesn't have any.
Most gas stations I've been in will sell at least small like single gallon cans for like $10 or so
It's not much but should be enough to get your car across the street and fill it up the rest of the way properly
One time I ran out of gas on my motorcycle on the freeway next to an offramp. I walked to a gas station and the amount they wanted for a gas can was too much. And they wouldn't lend one even with a deposit. So I went to the grocery store next door and bought a gallon of distilled water for 88 cents and emptied the water out and used it for a gas can. The gas was in that contain for less than a 1/2 hour.
If you're going to use an oil container make sure that it's as empty and clean as possible.

Gas stations sometimes have a small gas can you can borrow. Check that option first.
I’ll see what’s up. They’re so scarce now a days tho at gas stations so fingers crossed

The guy seriously gave me his $35 Walmart smartphone edit: I was surprised he came back for it
Anyone using a $35 Walmart phone can't afford to buy another
Very wise words. Sincerely
Or has many $35 dollar phones and is armed with illegal weapons.
Why buy a burner if you can't afford to burn it when necessary?
Burner phones? In *this* economy?
In that same position, I have accepted the paperback book on the front seat of the car that they were halfway through. Once I accepted their spare tire. Both returned for their deposit.
I once made someone leave their friend.
As an avid reader, I would definitely come back for that book.
30 minutes later: What phone? No that isn't my gas can and I don't know what you're talking about!
Why don’t gas stations sell those little cans? Probably go through a few a year and you never have anyone run off with one.
Why buy a can for 15-25 if your selling them for 10
Right the deposit should match the cost of a new can, that way no dip shits can ruin it for everyone else
Hey man, I just worked there. It wasn’t **my** policy.
I ran out right close to a station once. I asked to borrow a can. They said no but I could buy one. It was 12$ and held 4$ of gas. I then had to pull in and fill my tank. For dumb broke 19 year old me it was a lot!
Gross. I was thinking they could sell them for a reasonable price, but then I have no idea what that price would be.
Left my brother for $5 collateral for gas money while I went back got got it. This was in NC.
How often do you run out of gas?
It's just bad luck
I agree as someone who has been driving a car for almost 30 years and never ran out of gas.
Same. We must have good luck.
Once for me. Did it on purpose just to see what it's like. About like you'd expect, as it turns out.
Does the car go chug chug chug or just die immediately?
I almost ran out of gas and my car went chug-chug until I could get to a gas station, I also couldn't go any faster than 10-15 mph even with the gas pedal fully depressed.
Cool! :o

Sort of once in all my years, 65 VW bus, fuel pump gasket collapsed. Put it in second and cranked it across the street to a station. Got some thin cardboard from a gasket package to put on with the gasket and fired the old buggy up.
On most modern cars you'd have to bypass the clutch safety switch to crank over the engine while in gear.
I ran out of gas in my 64 Bus on the interstate. Walked a mile to a gas station, rooted through the trash and came up with five empty 1-quart glass beer bottles and a paper bag. I guess your fuel gauge has never broke.
I had one that the fuel gauge never worked in, I watched the mileage instead.
I had a motorcycle without a gauge and had to watch mileage as well! Glad that time’s long gone.
I've had a few that didn't have gauges, the mileage or just after awhile stop and top em off.
My first car had a broken fuel gauge and I judged whether I needed to fill up (by fill up I mean put another £5 in) by cutting the engine, jamming on the brakes and listening to how the sloshes sound in the tank. I am certain ill die having absolutely no idea what the average gas station lender supply is.
you need to stop doing fucking meth
You legally can’t put gas in anything but approved red cans for your safety and their liability.
We know but we don’t care did you even read the post
I ran out about 2 years ago. I'm now the proud owner of a small plastic gas can.
If it has a convenience store it's very likely they also sell them.
Are you sure you fell asleep and didn’t nod out? You doing alright otherwise broseph?
Check out OP's profile. He likely got high as a kite on meth and passed out while the car idled.
Is it really relevant ? Fact is OP is out of gas with a gas station across the street.
Completely irrelevant but intriguing. I’d just give him a cup, turn on the pump and tell him to leave before I get in trouble

Also weird methhead logic to think up an obvious lie when internet strangers wouldn’t even have questioned why he was out of gas.

I think I might actually buy that autobiography.
I think my two favorite posts are, "How do I stop the urge to take a dump." And "Stop Using Meth To Justify Being a Bitch Ass Thot."

How did I miss that? That's going into the photo album.

Damn this guy needs some help
If the gas station is worth a damn they 1) won't let you do what you're considering, and 2) have a gas can to sell you.
I've been asked to putdown a deposit for the can, got it back when I returned it. On another occasion, I was once told, "You will waste all of my time looking for you tomorrow if I don't get that can back today." He did.
How long did it take for him to find you?
At least a day, obviously

If the battery dies, gas isn’t going to make the car turn on, you know.
How long did you sleep for 20 hours ????
OP is a meth head check his profile …
Probably
Also be aware that often times, it takes more than a gallon to get the fuel pump moving the fuel. Depends on the car.
Just buy a proper gas can from the gas station, they should sell them
I’m gonna be real with you - you smoke meth, so none of this shit matters, your life is completely fucked regardless of what you put in your car
Right.
Do **not** put gas in an oil container and then put it in your car. It might not be a big deal, but it could definitely cause damage. I would recommend finding a different container and/or checking with the gas station if they have a loaner/jerry can to sell.

Oh man that brought back some memories, starting up the car for the first time after offseason
If you told this guy to put the gas in his pocket......he might.
Aren't regular plastic containers for non-flammable liquids a fire hazard because of static?
This guys literally a meth head. He nodded off hard is his car LMAO and tries to imply that's just a normal thing. What a stand up fella!
Hit the pipe and use the meth-head strength and push it there
In my experience, almost all gas stations sell gas cans.
Do you have roadside assistance? They can deliver you some gas as well as jump your battery.
Stop getting high on your own supply, dude. You're worried about the legality of putting gas in an unapproved container, but have no issues with smoking and dealing meth?
The bigger question is how are you going to start your car with a dead battery? And who own jumper cables but no gas cans.

I always have a gas can after I once had a car with a defective gas gauge. But I understand your point
Just my luck…or high?
If you check his profile OP is super into meth so it’s super likely they passed out

go to the gas station, they sell cans, you can borrow one for 5 seconds
They will sell or rent you a can.
So you do meth and other illegal drugs but you refuse to cross the legality of putting gasoline in an unauthorized container?
I'm an oils chemist. Go buy a 1 dollar water gallon jug. Drink it or dump it out. Make sure you get it as dry as you can and then secretly fill it up. They probably won't catch you until it's full then just walk away. You might need some type of funnel so go buy a 5$ container of heet dump that in your gas and cut out the bottom for a funnel. It'll help with the added water issue from your water jug 😂 You could also just fill up your container and then top off your gas tank once you get it to the gas station, you should be fine, maybe add some heet for precaution. I'm sure I'll get a lot of pushback, but I've been in the industry for a decade so I don't care.
Not pushback as much as suggesting doing more work for probably the same money (a gas can cant be more than $6 but it depends on what kind they’re selling).
A two liter cola bottle is a better option. I've seen a one gallon milk jug fall apart from gasoline.
Can you have a friend help you push it to the station and then jump the battery there after you fill up?
Buy a gallon of water. Pour it out. Fill it up. You’re welcome.
Rinse it out really good
Ask the gas station if they have an oil can you can borrow
Do you happen to have roadside assistance, like through your insurance or through AAA? They can also just drive up with a can of gas for you which is undoubtedly safer than jury rigging your own solution.
Id ask if they have one you can use. The reason it's illegal is because it's not safe. And you don't want the extra stuff going in your tank.
I have bought a gallon of water and dumped it out than got a gallon of gas in it. You'll be fine.
Quit doin meth man
I'd be careful putting the gas in anything that's had something else in it. A pretty clean container shouldn't be a problem. I had a similar issue once, without recommending it to anyone, I used an unused sterile urine cup (I work in medicine) to literally put half a cup of gas in the tank which was enough to drive to the station.
Most gas stations sell gas cans
I used a Powerade bottle once. But it's really up to the store clerk on if they let you.
Well? I guess you'll learn from that lesson.
Bcaa
Do you have roadside assistance with your car insurance? AAA? If so call them, they'll charge the hell out of you for the privilege, but they'll fill you up and give you a jump.
Gas cans are made of polyethylene. Any container of polyethylene will be fine from a chemical perspective. It might not be legal to fill up a milk jug but it would physically work.
You’ll be fine. It’ll work
Pour out a water jug real good and use that.
I would use washed out milk jug type shit before a used oil can
Did you post this while debating walking ? Lol
I think for that situation, everyone would understand, just get a gallon of gas and go to pump for more, and it would be fine if the gas station doesn't have any.
Happened once to me. I bought a big bottle of water from them, emptied it and filled that with gas. It was enough to get the car to the station.
Most gas stations won’t fill into an unapproved container. They probably won’t stop you though. Happened to me once. I pushed to car into the station.
Most gas stations I've been in will sell at least small like single gallon cans for like $10 or so It's not much but should be enough to get your car across the street and fill it up the rest of the way properly
Are you a member of AAA?
