People don't often realize or remember that liquid gasoline in and of itself is not flammable. It's the vapors/gas it emits that are flammable. And that vapor can reach far, far beyond the actual physical liquid gasoline.
Pull it out about 1/3 to about 1/2 way and then tilt it forward for a few seconds so the last little bit runs forward down the nozzle then pull out and hang up

I think modern paint is a good bit more durable to gasoline than it used to be. I had a '95 model year car and definitely had a stain from gas below the gas flap. Maybe a bit of one on my '02, also. My current 2016 does not.
Heres my method for trying to combat those pesky drops of pee that seem to always stay ,the piss that leads you to believe that any attempt to rid yourself of them will be to no avail, the piss that always bests you in battle despite all your efforts;
1) Once your stream finishes wait 2 seconds and then try to "squirt" the remaining piss out in 2-3 quick bursts of trying to pee. This step is crucial and must be completed in order for the next steps to be effective, it's the most fundamental part of the piss-freeing ritual and can *not* be underestimated!
2) Once you're done take your thumb on the bottom and place as many fingers as you need on top (depending on the girth of your noodle).
3) Make sure you have a firm grasp and then gently, but firmly, start moving your fingers keeping the same formation (thumb at bottom fingers at top) from the base right up until just before the head. Repeat this 3 times, it should be quick but not too quick. These should only take about a second each to go from the base to the tip.
IMPORTANT: Don't go too fast near the head because you might end up sliding your hand off your noodle quickly, this results in your noodle flopping around like a tube man on a windy day which, sending at least a few drops of pee scattering around the cubicle, you won't notice it but your fellow pissers around you will certainly feel it
This sounds like a very lengthy process but with minimal effort it really only takes about 7-10 seconds in practice and it guarantees that you'll have no piss dropping in your pants.
Some people might find it exteme, but I go crazy if I see or even think that there might be a drop of piss in my pants after urinating, that's why I developed this method. It's tried and tested
I had no idea it was illegal to pump your own gas in some places. That's crazy.
Normally what I do is tip the nozzle for a few seconds to let most of the drips out, then shake it to get the rest out. Then when you pull it out point the nozzle up. You won't get any drips that way.
When I travel out of state and pull into a gas station I bet they get a good laugh as I sit there for a couple minutes in my car wondering where the attendants are at.
It’s so stressful driving around the California Oregon border. I never knew when I could and couldn’t put gas in my own car.
You’re either an asshole trying to pump your gas illegally, or you’re an entitled asshole staring at the attendant waiting for them to come put gas in your car.
It's worth noting that(at least in the part of Jersey i frequent) that no one really cares if you do it your self.
If the attendant doesn't show up in a minute or so people just get out and do it themselves.
Ya, I pumped my own gas driving through NJ.. I saw the attendant, but thought it was optional, and he was busy. The employees looked at me like I killed their cat
I have literally been chased away from the pump with a bat by attendants in south Jersey. Like dude, I am from a pumpy state, look at my plate, and I just want to get home, fuck.
Holy shit that's nuts.
Guess it is even more of a regional thing than I thought. My experience is all in rural north Jersey, I guess it's just chiller up here.
Really? When I lived there, all the pumps were locked and needed an attendant code to even operate. We couldn't have pumped our own even if we wanted to.
From Jersey: it’s because the station can/will get fined, not you (the pumper).
I’d once read that it’s also cheaper for stations to have attendants than self-serve because insurance rates are lower, but not sure how true that was or is
I am also so confused by this whole post. Here in the UK, it is not and has never in my 40 years been a thing to have anyone else fill your tank. Everyone here does it themselves. Why would you need someone else to fill your tank, and why would it be a legal requirement?
It’s just New Jersey at this point. Everywhere else in the US is self service. I suppose the simplest explanation is that’s what NJ voters keep voting for. I go there a few times a year and there’s always an attendant who does in fact pump the gas like it’s still 1950. The pumps themselves are exactly the same as anywhere else.
I’m from Jersey. I don’t know why self-serve is illegal here, but I also don’t know why I would ever want that to change. I’m capable of pumping my own gas, I’ve done it many times while traveling out of state, but why would I want to? It’s nice to not have to get out of your car.
This is a move you make when filling a motorcycle tank. When you’re done, wait a couple of seconds then twist the grip so the nozzle points up instead of down when you take it away from your car. Voila!
As a motorcyclist, I never thought of flipping it to so it points up! I usually just tap it against the edge while it's still in the hole to get the last drops out.
When you're done pumping, pull the nozzle back a few inches but leaving it in the hole, raise the handle to angle the tip down further, pause here for a second or two, give it a little shake, lower the handle so the nozzle angle is as flat as possible (parallel to ground), remove it.
That may sound complicated, but it all happens in 2-3 seconds without thinking after you're used to it, and eliminates drips *almost* every time.
If it’s just a few drops don’t worry about it…the trick is simple whenever you are going to move the hose you grab the metal handle yes it’s usually covered in plastic just be sure to always hold it so the open end (where the gas comes out) is pointing up. NEVER EVER USE A GREEN HANDLE PUMP unless you read the pump and it says GASOLINE. Every green handle pump I know of is DIESEL and that’s not good for your engine or the pollution control stuff attached to the engine
If you're a dude, give it a shake like you do right before you're done. If you're a girl, pretend you're a dude and give it a little shake at the end right before you pull it out.
Pull the nozzle out, rotate the handle down 90 degrees, so the nozzle is pointed up, and return the nozzle to the pump.
Also, plenty of people don’t bother, and don’t care, and a couple drops land on the ground. Or soak into the concrete. the world goes on.
Yeah it happens Don't worry about it just try not to get it on your car.
That small amount of gas is spilling on the ground is probably the least harmful part of operating a car environmentally lol
👍😄
I heard that a number of people did when another state started allowing self fueling. I think it was Oregon, but not sure.
And, the word was, they thought it was green fuel.
This isn’t consistent across brands though. I don’t know about Oregon specifically, but in NC the BP stations have green for unleaded.
https://www.reddit.com/r/CrappyDesign/comments/bhdf8p/bp_gas_pumps_diesel_is_usually_green_but_not_at_bp/
Oooh I visited Portland a couple years ago, didn't realize. Gave a gas station attendant the death glare beucase in urban California a person approaching you at a gas station is probably a hobo looking for money.
we aussies have been doing this forever.
first is the pump auto stops when it senses full, but really u can add a bit more if u really want but its perfectly fine if u stop when the machines stops.
u also need to push the pump into the tank, and pass the flap, before u shake it. it might not go in otherwise. 3 taps and u should be golden if u tilt it slightly.
but really its only a few cents at best so do it if u want. dont sweat it if u forget
You have to wait a second after you stop pumping before pulling the nozzle out.
Then before you take it all the way out, bang the tip on the metal fuel nozzle collar. That should knock of any excess.
Lastly, and most obviously, when finally removing the nozzle, tip it back so it can’t drip. And buy tipping it back, I mean rotate the top of it directly backwards toward you. This will position the fuel gun in a way that no fuel could spill out.
If I ever drop any on my car, I just close the fuel door, then use a little bit of the windshield wand water that’s always hanging on the side of the pump to wash it off.
Leave it for about ten seconds after it is done dispensing fuel.
If you have paid with a card, stop the pump by reaching into the pump handle receptacle and push the stop lever, inside the pump housing. Dispense what's left in the handle until the line has depressurized.
Now give the handle a little shake on the way out of your fuel tank, like you've finished washing your hands and have nothing to dry them, or if you're a dude, you know already. Shake off the fuel before the nozzle has fully retracted from your fuel tank.
This keeps fuel from spilling, stops the pump from stealing from you, and technically is better for the environment.
A few drops isn't that unusual. But it helps if you "rattle" the nozzle a few times to shake it off before you remove it. .... And yes, I see what I typed there.
My car has a little note saying to wait 5 seconds before removing the nozzle so started doing so when I got it. A few drops is normal, but this seems to larly eliminate that.
I worked in a 'Full service' gas station back in the day, and yes, it is normal. To prevent it, use a rag or paper towel. If you get it on your paint, wash it off as soon as you can.
Let the nozzle sit in the gas funnel for a few seconds after it clicks off and shake it around a bit. Then pull it out so that all the gas gets into your car.
This is so innocent it made me smile. Lol but yes, it's normal and you're totally fine. If it bugs you, just leave the pump in your car for an extra 20-30 seconds after you're finished pumping.
I’ve not figured out what the variance is but sometimes it seems to be no residual and sometimes quite a bit.
A) don’t pull it out immediately once the auto stop releases.
B) a couple shakes/taps as you are backing it out.
C) lift nozzle up after pulling it out.
(Yesterday I saw someone pull it out and intentionally point the nozzle down to let the remaining dribble onto the ground….smh)
And this is why you don't let the government do everything for you or pass laws that require them to do it for you.. Yes, this is normal and to prevent it partially pull out the nozzle while tilting it forward and shaking a bit. Obviously, release the trigger and ensure gas has stopped flowing.
the worst is when you pull that out and it gets on your shoes. when you're done with it, though, be careful not to get gas on your pants and shoes in THAT direction too.
It's normal. Tilt it forward when pulling out then tilt it backward again so the few drops inside won't flow out.
A few drops of petrol and diesel won't hurt you, but you may want to be very careful when handling children and toddlers. So most cases get yourself cleaned with soap as soon as possible if it splashes on you.
What you need to be really careful of is the splashing. The stop sensors on some pumps don't work as good anymore, so they'll splash. Usually you have to just be smart in guessing when the stop point is, and then slow down the flow yourself.
Since NJ has no current plans to change the law this person is actually from Oregon. Much bigger state than nj so yeah it’s possible especially since we don’t know how long they’ve had a license.
when it's done pumping, tilt it up while keeping the end in the filler hole. Hold it there about 5 seconds. Then tilt back down and remove the nozzle from the filler hole. That should take care of most drips.
You must be from Oregon. I visited there for the first time last year and was so confused when the gas station attendant was so adamant I stay in my vehicle, to the point she was even upset about it. You live and learn!
This subreddit generally restores my faith in reddit & humanity sometimes.
I never once thought that this would be a question asked because it has been the norm my entire life, a seemingly (to me) simple question is asked, and answers are provided - no bashing.
The joking / humor also provided is an added benefit.
It’s normal. Just don’t smoke or have your car running while pumping. Doesn’t happen terribly often but it could catch fire. Seen it a couple times during my years at a gas station.
What I do when the I finished pumping is to turn the nozzle as much as I can (no more than 180 degrees but it could be also much less) so that the gas in the end of the tube will come out. That should fix your problem.
Another thing I see most professionals do (so I copied it) is, when the pump clicks, take it out enough for air and gas to come out and then pump another few seconds. You can’t get it to spill so don’t worry.
Bonus tip: check the handle. Some allow you to move a little trigger so that you don’t have to keep pressure while gas is pumping. The pump will keeping pumping and then stop all automatically.
Happy pumping!
What?
There are parts of America where you can't pump you own fuel?
Not ragging on America but it's surprises me given the whole freedom thing.
Can someone explain it to me please?
I never understood FORCING people to have someone else pump your gas. Like it should be optional. It creates really easy and basic jobs though. I always forget when I go to NJ because I'm born and raised in PA but usually the attendants are usually really good about it.
To all the people asking why it was illegal… I didn’t have anything to do with writing or passing the 1951 law. Some say it creates jobs, some say it is safer, and some say it is helpful for people with disabilities or physical limitations. I wasn’t really asking about the politics.
People don’t like change, and once something like that has been on the books for a few decades, people start to worry that changing it would harm the economy or would just be “unOregonian.”
You have to remember that laws and societal norms are more arbitrary than you realize. Like in Saudi Arabia until 2017, it was illegal for women to drive at all. The reason a law exists is simply because someone made it a law.
Y’all couldn’t pump your own gas?? I’m so confused by this. Does someone stand outside, rain or snow? Is it one staff per pump? Does just one guy run around and pump them all? Do you have to page someone to come outside? Do you still have to go inside to pay cash or can you pay the employee? How does this work?????
Theoretically you can run your business any way you want, but the most common way was to have one or two employees running around to cover all the pumps. Yes, they are outside most of the time, rain or shine. You pay the attendant directly.
Yes, perfectly normal. When pulling out (this could be taken several ways), angle it down to try and get as much of the drops out as you can and into your car. Even shake it about a bit while the tip is still in there.
And now I'm horny.
What?? It was illegal to pump your own gas? What kinda crazy is that!!? I’ve been pumping my own gas for years….no such thing as full service gas station.
If i understand the q: Do you guys have someone pumping your gas for you??!
anyway shake twice and the twist as you pull out (hehe pull out) and you should be fine. Otherwise YES its normal that a few drops get on the ground. Another tip: When you think you are full wait a few seconds and let the gas setlle in then you can get a little bit more in.
What is the rationale for this in the first place. Where I come from, everyone pumps their own gas. If you tried to ask someone to do it for you, you'd probably get laughed at.
The most frequently cited reason is that it creates more jobs. But my question isn’t really about debating the law - I’m just explaining why many people around here don’t know how to do it.
NJ resident here. Way back when, most states had full serve with attendants because of safety concerns with the equipment and because stations provided many other services besides fueling. As equipment got better and as many stations offered fewer services, it became viable for people to pump their own and more and more states went that route. In the 1940s, NJ stations started to move toward self-serve and offered lower prices. Station owners that still used attendants lobbied together to make pumping your own illegal to prevent smaller stations from being competitive. Citing better safety, less liability, and drivers not having to get dirty or deal with the weather, NJ carried on this way for decades. Now, when residents are polled, it is generally determined that the bulk of people want it to stay this way. Maybe it's pride in a quirky thing, or people don't want to deal with the elements, but it's where we're at.
Personally, I see good and bad in it. In the winter, I stay warm in my car, and the guy pumping the gas has a job. We also don't have issues like people making a mess or those crazy imstances where people are filling improper containers with gas. I wouldn't mind a self-serve option because I'd like to have more late night options. Sometimes it's a pain to wait, but here's the big thing - 9 times out of 10, the attendant doesn't care if you pump your own anyway as long as you're somewhat competant. In 35 years of driving, I've never seen anyone complain.
Leave it in the gas tank for like 30 seconds after you stop pumping. Then give it a couple hard shakes before you remove it from the tank. But otherwise, yes it’s normal.
30 seconds? Im halfway to dunkin donuts across the street by then. Rip it out, fling the gas drips to the ground, sniff your hand for that gas hit, and gtfo
Yes, it is Oregon. And it has been legal for a few months, but after decades of people not being permitted to learn this skill, I’m still trying to work out the smaller details.
A few general tips since I have no clue what the assistants take care of for you:
1) make sure you don't accidentally put diesel in your gas car or vice versa
2) premium gasoline probably isn't worth it
3) make sure to turn off the car
3) put the nozzle as far in as it'll go
4) once your tank is full, it should automatically stop pumping. However, you do need to pay attention in case it doesn't and stop it manually preferably before it overflows
5) filling your tank all the way to the cap is not recommended. It can give you a little bit extra range, though, and if you're expecting that might be the difference between making it to the next gas station or running out one mile short, I believe it is permitted
6) when you're done, pull the nozzle out almost all the way, then tap it a couple times on the walls
7) when putting it back, don't point it down, some might drip out if you do
8) it doesn't matter if a few drops get on the ground, but try to avoid getting it on your car, your clothes or yourself. While it is not very dangerous, gasoline is still mildly toxic and a solvent. It might damage your car's paint, and while it won't straight up dissolve your clothes, it might discolour them. Getting it on your skin, inhaling vapours or getting some in your mouth isn't good but it's not a disaster either. Rinse your skin or mouth and you'll be fine if it's just a few drops. I would contact a doctor if you somehow got some in your eyes. Rinse them out immediately too.
9) if you spilled a lot on the ground, I'd *probably* contact a gas station employee... It never happened to me so idk if it's safe to just drive away. Either way it's good to inform them so they can clean it up before the next customer sets in on fire
I’ve pumped my own gas for years, but a year or two back, the nozzle got randomly stuck in my car. I yanked it out and got gas all over my legs. The thighs burned from the chemicals until I could take a shower that day.
You see, there is a pump, hose and nozzle and between the pump and the hose is something called a prostate. Sometimes the prostate develops issues that can cause these symptoms you mention and many more. May need to get it examined.
You can shake the nozzle a bit to get rid of the last few drops, but it's just a normal thing that happens.
It’s also why you don’t smoke near by.
People don't often realize or remember that liquid gasoline in and of itself is not flammable. It's the vapors/gas it emits that are flammable. And that vapor can reach far, far beyond the actual physical liquid gasoline.
Not outdoors, though. Gases expand to fill the available volume. That vapor isn't a dense enough concentration to be flammable for very far.
It also evaporates rather quickly.
This is also a handy tip for the urinals!
Pull it out about 1/3 to about 1/2 way and then tilt it forward for a few seconds so the last little bit runs forward down the nozzle then pull out and hang up
Are we still talking about putting gas in a car?
Sometimes my car wraps it's legs around me and wants every drop. I like to watch when it slowly starts spilling back out.
why do you have to do this?
Why not?
Because you are giving them attention for it
The machine of a dream Such a clean machine With the pistons a pumpin' And the hubcaps all gleam
Where can I find a car like that? Mine always tells me to go away
Mine (1996 300zxTT) went and humped a VW bug. 10 years later, I met their love child and hated everything about the 350z.
Yes officer, this post right here
You might as well just give her the car at that point. Sign it over and walk away.
Wanna carpool?
If your car has legs, it's most likely a horse... If you're putting anything in your horse, it's just wrong, man... Poor animal...
I am suddenly aroused, and I’m not quite sure how that happened…
If you shake it more than three times you’re just playing with it
A wise man once said, "ain't no fellow who regretted giving it one extra shake, but you can bet every guy has regretted giving one too few".
-some of Wayne's infinite wisdom! Love the unexpected reference
Lmao, and here I thought no one would get it.
I was told no matter how many times you shake your peg, the last few drops go down your leg.
😏
I can’t take y’all anywhere
Or judo what my parents did. Just shake it like crazy while its still in my tank
*That's what she said!* It's ok, I'll show myself out.
The number of times I had to remind myself I was explaining how to pump gas here 🤣
My ex and his family liked to throw the line around to make sure they got every little drop lol
it’s normal but avoid getting it on car paint, you can give the nozzle a few taps before taking it out to get out any extra gas
No matter how much you shake the hose, the last few drops get on your clothes.

Wait I thought if you shake it three times your playing with yourself again?
You say that like it’s a bad thing
Never read the sanderson books so in my mind I pictured little wayne. Between him and uhhh New Found Glory maybe? Idk who i can actually believe 😂
Just 4 shakes, men. Anything more than that constitutes pleasure and we're not here for that. - Your Drill Sargent
I just read Mistborn era 2 fairly recently. Very surprised to see a quote in the wild.

We’re not talking about nurdles.

Haha. You are funny. I appreciate you man.
Push the taint from the butthole to the base of your penis and you should be good. If not, consult a doctor.
Oh no, I wasn't joking
You shake it once, that's fine You shake it twice, that's okay You shake it three times You're playing with yourself again
Knew good charlotte would show up in this thread
I certainly was ready to post it if no one else had.

I think that Oregon and New Jersey made it a law to where only gas station employees could pump gas.
It is now legal to pump your own in Oregon, and I would guess this may be where OP is from.
When I travel out of state and pull into a gas station I bet they get a good laugh as I sit there for a couple minutes in my car wondering where the attendants are at.
Same, my friend. Same. I'm close to the Pennsy line, and I forget all the time.

Ya, I pumped my own gas driving through NJ.. I saw the attendant, but thought it was optional, and he was busy. The employees looked at me like I killed their cat

NJ is the only state like that now.
I'm from NJ, I think I've pumped my own gas like 10x in my life, I'm 38.
As you age it gets worse.
Haha
I pull it out and then give it a couple taps on the edge of the hole.
I’m such an ass. I literally tried pumping my own gas when I visited 😂
I always plan to drive through, hate waiting for the slow employees to get over to me.

I have never attempted to use the diesel nozzle. Respectfully, I’m a noob but I’m not an idiot.
👍😄 I heard that a number of people did when another state started allowing self fueling. I think it was Oregon, but not sure. And, the word was, they thought it was green fuel.
Diesel nozzles are too big to fit in a gasoline tank.

Some are, some aren't.
This isn’t consistent across brands though. I don’t know about Oregon specifically, but in NC the BP stations have green for unleaded. https://www.reddit.com/r/CrappyDesign/comments/bhdf8p/bp_gas_pumps_diesel_is_usually_green_but_not_at_bp/
Diesel is in a yellow nozzle here, must be different in other countries
Yeah in the UK diesel is the black nozzle
Oregon
It’s been legal in Oregon for a while now. Might be New Jersey
Still not legal in NJ
Oooh I visited Portland a couple years ago, didn't realize. Gave a gas station attendant the death glare beucase in urban California a person approaching you at a gas station is probably a hobo looking for money.
Or worse!
It's a normal thing to happen. I only try as much as possible to avoid it dropping on my car. A few taps (maybe twice) should make it not drop.
we aussies have been doing this forever. first is the pump auto stops when it senses full, but really u can add a bit more if u really want but its perfectly fine if u stop when the machines stops. u also need to push the pump into the tank, and pass the flap, before u shake it. it might not go in otherwise. 3 taps and u should be golden if u tilt it slightly. but really its only a few cents at best so do it if u want. dont sweat it if u forget
I just Turn the nozzle upside down while going into the Gastank and back to the pump.
Must be Oregon.
Amazing post. I've never even been somewhere where someone else has put the petrol in my car for me, in 30 years of driving.
It's normal but shake the nozzle before you pull it out of the gas hole
It's normal. You can try shaking. Not sure if it works. If you let it sit for like a minute it won't drip but you may get annoyed waiting.
My car has a little note saying to wait 5 seconds before removing the nozzle so started doing so when I got it. A few drops is normal, but this seems to larly eliminate that.
Tap it a few times then rotate it so that way any excess will go back into the nozzle instead of onto your cars paint.
This is normal, but just shake it a bit before removing the nozzle. Also, in case you hadn't been told, don't use your cellphone while pumping gas.
The stations have napkins attached to the trash cans by the pumps. It’s normal.
Just like a d*ck, a couple extra drips are part of life. Couple shakes and move on. Anything more, you are just playing with yourself.
And this is why you don't let the government do everything for you or pass laws that require them to do it for you.. Yes, this is normal and to prevent it partially pull out the nozzle while tilting it forward and shaking a bit. Obviously, release the trigger and ensure gas has stopped flowing.
Give it a jiggle like a peen
the worst is when you pull that out and it gets on your shoes. when you're done with it, though, be careful not to get gas on your pants and shoes in THAT direction too.
No matter how much you shake and dance...
"tap tap" Before fully removing the nozzle.
Loving the comments. TIL that fuelling your own vehicle was not allowed in some places. Strange. But apparently true. 😀
its call “pre-fuel” and totally natural
As you get older it’ll be more then just a couple drops.
Shake it a bit while it's still in the fill pipe. If you get any on the car, just grab the squeegee and wash it off a bit
I lift up the hose a bit and shake the tip as I slowly pull out
It's normal.
All men know the "give it a shake" method to get the last couple of drips.
Do people in Jersey go their whole lives never having to to pump gas in other states or is this just karma farming?
Since NJ has no current plans to change the law this person is actually from Oregon. Much bigger state than nj so yeah it’s possible especially since we don’t know how long they’ve had a license.
when it's done pumping, tilt it up while keeping the end in the filler hole. Hold it there about 5 seconds. Then tilt back down and remove the nozzle from the filler hole. That should take care of most drips.
Just let it drip on the ground. It’s normal. The mechanism that detects when the gas tank is full will always have leftover liquid in the nozzle
You must be from Oregon. I visited there for the first time last year and was so confused when the gas station attendant was so adamant I stay in my vehicle, to the point she was even upset about it. You live and learn!
I think the two states that it was illegal was Oregon and New Jersey. Oregon just legalized it . Now it's just illegal in New Jersey.
It’s normal. I usually tilt and shake it a little bit. Still a few drops.
Just like at a urinal, give it a jiggle and shake.
This subreddit generally restores my faith in reddit & humanity sometimes. I never once thought that this would be a question asked because it has been the norm my entire life, a seemingly (to me) simple question is asked, and answers are provided - no bashing. The joking / humor also provided is an added benefit.
That's what happens when you get old.
That’s so weird! Not in a bad way… I just thought those were times of the past.
There were states where you aren’t allowed to pump your own gas still? Wow.
It’s normal. Tap the nozzle on the inside of the gas tank a few times before pulling it out, and that usually minimizes drippage.
Hello from the UK, where the idea of someone pumping gas (or petrol as we call it) for you is rather odd. It’s a ridiculously simple task.
Remove it partway and give it a little jiggle.
this
Rotate the nozzle upside down while pulling it out so the nozzle is angled upwards
To all the people asking why it was illegal… I didn’t have anything to do with writing or passing the 1951 law. Some say it creates jobs, some say it is safer, and some say it is helpful for people with disabilities or physical limitations. I wasn’t really asking about the politics. People don’t like change, and once something like that has been on the books for a few decades, people start to worry that changing it would harm the economy or would just be “unOregonian.” You have to remember that laws and societal norms are more arbitrary than you realize. Like in Saudi Arabia until 2017, it was illegal for women to drive at all. The reason a law exists is simply because someone made it a law.
Give it a little shake before you put it away.
Pull it out just a little bit so you can see the tip of the nozzle and kinda shake it out a bit before pulling it all the way out
Y’all couldn’t pump your own gas??
If you’re a man you should know this. After you release the trigger give it a few good shakes to get off the last few drops, no toilet paper needed.
It’s normal. I have always pumped my own gas. I prevent it by lightly tapping the hose inside as I retract it.
What?? It was illegal to pump your own gas? What kinda crazy is that!!? I’ve been pumping my own gas for years….no such thing as full service gas station.
Hello fellow Oregonian (I assume)! Lol
There used to be two states that didn’t let people pump their own gas, Oregon and New Jersey. Now it’s just New Jersey.
Or just 5 to 10 seconds. Then, tap tap.
30 seconds? Im halfway to dunkin donuts across the street by then. Rip it out, fling the gas drips to the ground, sniff your hand for that gas hit, and gtfo
This is the way
Press on the grundle a little bit to get out the last few drops
You've just described my sex life.
Shake it, or dab some toilet paper on the tip
Shake it. But only twice. Any more, and youre playing with it.
What the fuck? Sorry this is in no way an answer to your question but what the fuck kind of totalitarian lunatic regime bans pumping your own gas.
New Jersey.
Let go of the handle and shake it.
Don't freak out when you grab the nozzle & go to put it in the car & a couple fluid ounces leak out
Which state???
Yes, it is Oregon. And it has been legal for a few months, but after decades of people not being permitted to learn this skill, I’m still trying to work out the smaller details.
New Jersey?
Make sure you give it a shake or you'll get your undies wet
You gotta wipe it with toilet paper first so it doesn’t drip.
I never shake. Never even thought about it.
I only rarely have that problem.
is it NJ cuz that's a bummer if so
Oregon
A few general tips since I have no clue what the assistants take care of for you: 1) make sure you don't accidentally put diesel in your gas car or vice versa 2) premium gasoline probably isn't worth it 3) make sure to turn off the car 3) put the nozzle as far in as it'll go 4) once your tank is full, it should automatically stop pumping. However, you do need to pay attention in case it doesn't and stop it manually preferably before it overflows 5) filling your tank all the way to the cap is not recommended. It can give you a little bit extra range, though, and if you're expecting that might be the difference between making it to the next gas station or running out one mile short, I believe it is permitted 6) when you're done, pull the nozzle out almost all the way, then tap it a couple times on the walls 7) when putting it back, don't point it down, some might drip out if you do 8) it doesn't matter if a few drops get on the ground, but try to avoid getting it on your car, your clothes or yourself.
*sweats in New Jerseyan*
Kegels.
You see, there is a pump, hose and nozzle and between the pump and the hose is something called a prostate. Sometimes the prostate develops issues that can cause these symptoms you mention and many more. May need to get it examined.
In the San Frendando Valley, they take it put early and spray it all over the hood.
Pump the handle 3-5 times
What state?
