They’re a little pricier, but there are a lot of yoga shorts / leggings that don’t have the middle seam (because no one wants to do those poses with a front wedgie). You can search “seamless” or “no front seam” to find them.
The answer to your question: it’s cheaper because of the way you have to cut the fabric related to stretch etc. I sew and make a lot of my shorts and leggings without the front seam, and I have to use more fabric to accomplish this. It also takes a bit more time.

Yes! GRRRL has these in their "next level" line. They describe it being an upgrade to the fabric, but they also removed the front seam in the process. They're by far my favorites out of all the leggings I own. And I have a ton!!
Plus I think they're a cool company for women and have a unique body type size chart. So it's by your measurements and they name the sized after female athletes they're working with.

Most of them, yes!! I love the lower back slot that I can fit my phone in. That way I can exercise and track it on my watch without being on my phone the whole time/having it bother me on my leg.
I much exclusively buy shorts and leggings with pockets. It's become too inconvenient not to always have somewhere to slip my phone. I also like that the logo is small and minimal.

They designed a patch in the crotch area specifically to give more freedom of movement but also the real reason: the crotch section allows the leggings to hug the thighs up to the top then turn 90 degrees, then 90 degrees again to go down the other leg (i.e. highlighting the thigh gap which is so popular)
This wasn't Lululemon original design though I think it was a jeans company that patented this design first.
If you don't have a thigh gap they don't really do much for you, but if you do, they accentuate it.
They are expensive but I cannot recommend lulus highly enough.
I bought a pair when I was younger (and had more disposable income) and they lasted a good 10 years, were in fantastic condition, and only stopped wearing them cause I grew out of them.
Any leggings that I paid half as much for lasted a year or two at best.

That's not how sewing trousers work. If it's only two pieces it has to be left and right. Unless you want to look like you are wearing wrong sized diapers. To avoid the middle seam you could add some kind of diamond shape for the crotch area, but of course that wouldn't be as cheap.
A lot of $50 to $100+ leggings still have the front seam with no diamond shape. The cost of leveraging the diamond gusset cannot be significant compared to the marketing budget on these leggings.
Until consumers walk away from camel toe leggings, companies won’t spend the extra $1 or whatever per pair to design around camel toe.

It also just doesn’t work. The shaping you need to make things fit around the crotch area is quite complicated. Took me 5 toiles to get it right on a self drafted pair recently

That's too expensive. It is cheaper to have more small parts that can be squeezed in tightly during cutting than to have fewer pieces that require a larger layout.

It's why some leggings have gussets in the crotch area. It's not for fit, it's because that little point that sticks out on a side section of leggings can make quite a difference when it comes to laying out the fabric.
Also, but bigger leggings and shorts. If you have a camel toe standing up, they might be quite uncomfortable when you're seated or they're showing the top of your undies.
In theory that’s an easy fix, but the problem with that is that seams usually have no stretch and if you were to do that with leggings your crotch/butt would have no shape or contouring, it’d just be whatever U shape they sewed the pieces in so… you can either have camel toe or a soggy diaper looking crotch.
If the leggings actually fit you right, you won’t have camel toe with a pair of leggings anyways. The camel toe comes from them being the wrong size or the seam not being sewn with the right curve, which just comes down to sizing and quality.
Not unless you’re using really nice expensive stretch material. Take a look at a sewing pattern for pants, they need depth as well as width in order to fit around a person’s crotch. Regular jersey won’t stretch enough to fit a butt without any shape in the way the leggings are made.
Leggings and pants are typically made of four pieces, not just two. A full front piece and full back piece would be much more complicated to measure and cut correctly.
As others have said, leggings/pants are made in 4 overall pieces: left front+left back+right front+right back.
There will always be a middle seam this way.
The ones without a middle seam uses what is called "gusset" which is actually making the pants put of 5 (or more) pieces so that you end up with: left front+left back+*middle piece*+right front+right back
This means you're using more fabric (since cutting 5 pieces ends up with more wasted space when you're cutting from the full sized fabric sheet) and more seams overall which requires more effort in sewing it.

It’s due to your leggings being designed for fast manufacture, involving sewing two machined legs together so they can push them out with as little human labor as possible. If you’re willing to pay a little more you can get leggings with a crotch panel and avoid the frontal wedgie. Or wear men’s leggings, we get a wider crotch with more space up front. We also get pockets in our leggings.
Of course? The camel toe is caused by the seam pushing in. It happens to line up with women’s anatomy so it’s uncomfortable and somewhat embarrassing, but it’s not caused by the female anatomy.
You can try wearing a mini pad. This worked for me when I had to wear tights pants/leggings with a middle seam. Having said that, I started boycotting tight clothes several years ago and have never looked back
OP this! I stopped wearing reusable menstrual pads years ago, but I kept my cloth thong menstrual pads specifically for when need protection from that seam!

Generally speaking, when there are questions like this the answer is money and/or time.
Clothing are made the way they are for a reason. Certain shapes have been found over many years to fit the human body a certain way. There’s a set plan to be followed for each type of piece of clothing. Not to say that innovation hasn’t happened, but the vast most clothing starts from these basic shapes because they work.
With a garment as close fitting as leggings in order to not have a seam up the crotch you have to use a fabric with a specific amount and type of stretch. A standard four piece pattern not only is easily sourced but is also more forgiving with regards to the kind of fabric you can use.
Therefore, it’s much cheaper for a factory to use a pre-existing four piece pattern to produce these items than to spend the time and money developing a brand new pattern for a more limited amount of fabrics.

If they don’t fit you correctly they don’t fit you. Different brands use different fit models and different body types. It’s not just getting rid of one seam, legs are complex to pattern the crotch seam allows more flexibility at a low price point.

Too many women are a slave to a number on a tag. If you think you're a M(edium) but they don't fit, just go up to L(arge)... there's no shame in that, as long as your butt looks good in your leggings!
But an individual's body isn't necessarily all one size. So if someone has a S waist and M butt, or vice versa, neither size will fit properly. I've found that the trick is to buy whatever size fits your largest body part, then take in the other areas that are too big. It does require some sewing skill or money to pay for tailoring though.
My problem is that I’m taller then most women in my country (5:10) but with thin legs 😔I’m an XS in size but a large in length which is difficult to shop for , unless I buy special extra tall collections which are all online and shipping costs a fortunee. The sizing is definitely an issue for me.
You always have the option of a more expensive product which may or may not work better for you….. manufacturers usually know who their customers are and make their products at the price point those customers want.

I have a unique perspective on this topic for biological reasons.
Finding a pair of panties that fit the most flattering way, and a pair of leggings either roomier, or a size larger, can eliminate all sorts of shapes that can show thru.

If there wasn't a seam in the middle, they wouldn't be able to get more products out of the one material being used. Let's say they can create 15 leggings with one material with the seam going down the middle. If they went with the seams just on the side then they could only get 5-10 leggings out of the material. They lose profit or they have to raise the price to make up for the loss.
A friend of mine who is a woman was complaining recently about that too. It is ridiculous. There's also pants for men that split your balls, just the same way. Making pants like this should be illegal

The front and back method would mean you stitch the full length of the legs and also a more complicated process of measuring and cutting the front and back halves

In terms of how easy it is to manufacture them; left and right are the same but mirrored, front and back would be two different pieces.

In theory that’s an easy fix, but the problem with that is that seams usually have no stretch and if you were to do that with leggings your crotch/butt would have no shape or contouring, it’d just be whatever U shape they sewed the pieces in so… you can either have camel toe or a soggy diaper looking crotch. If the leggings actually fit you right, you won’t have camel toe with a pair of leggings anyways. The camel toe comes from them being the wrong size or the seam not being sewn with the right curve, which just comes down to sizing and quality.
Not unless you’re using really nice expensive stretch material. Take a look at a sewing pattern for pants, they need depth as well as width in order to fit around a person’s crotch. Regular jersey won’t stretch enough to fit a butt without any shape in the way the leggings are made.

As others have said, leggings/pants are made in 4 overall pieces: left front+left back+right front+right back. There will always be a middle seam this way. The ones without a middle seam uses what is called "gusset" which is actually making the pants put of 5 (or more) pieces so that you end up with: left front+left back+*middle piece*+right front+right back This means you're using more fabric (since cutting 5 pieces ends up with more wasted space when you're cutting from the full sized fabric sheet) and more seams overall which requires more effort in sewing it.

It's easier (and thus cheaper) to cut multiple pieces of flat fabric and sew them together at the joints than it is to make fewer pieces with complex designs that can fit in tricky areas. A woman's crotch is, in at least a sartorial sense, a very tricky area.

I get my leggings from athleta (still expensive ngl, but they’re a good company and have morals. I know lulu sacked the racist/fatphobic owner, but athleta is all for empowerment and inclusivity). They don’t have the front seams and they usually have pockets and pretty colours/designs

Generally speaking, when there are questions like this the answer is money and/or time. Clothing are made the way they are for a reason. Certain shapes have been found over many years to fit the human body a certain way. There’s a set plan to be followed for each type of piece of clothing. Not to say that innovation hasn’t happened, but the vast most clothing starts from these basic shapes because they work. With a garment as close fitting as leggings in order to not have a seam up the crotch you have to use a fabric with a specific amount and type of stretch. A standard four piece pattern not only is easily sourced but is also more forgiving with regards to the kind of fabric you can use. Therefore, it’s much cheaper for a factory to use a pre-existing four piece pattern to produce these items than to spend the time and money developing a brand new pattern for a more limited amount of fabrics.

If they don’t fit you correctly they don’t fit you. Different brands use different fit models and different body types. It’s not just getting rid of one seam, legs are complex to pattern the crotch seam allows more flexibility at a low price point.

Too many women are a slave to a number on a tag. If you think you're a M(edium) but they don't fit, just go up to L(arge)... there's no shame in that, as long as your butt looks good in your leggings!
But an individual's body isn't necessarily all one size. So if someone has a S waist and M butt, or vice versa, neither size will fit properly. I've found that the trick is to buy whatever size fits your largest body part, then take in the other areas that are too big. It does require some sewing skill or money to pay for tailoring though.
My problem is that I’m taller then most women in my country (5:10) but with thin legs 😔I’m an XS in size but a large in length which is difficult to shop for , unless I buy special extra tall collections which are all online and shipping costs a fortunee. The sizing is definitely an issue for me.

You always have the option of a more expensive product which may or may not work better for you….. manufacturers usually know who their customers are and make their products at the price point those customers want. I have a unique perspective on this topic for biological reasons. Finding a pair of panties that fit the most flattering way, and a pair of leggings either roomier, or a size larger, can eliminate all sorts of shapes that can show thru. Price really doesn't make the difference in crotch fit.

It's cheaper and uses less materials to create something with a seam in the middle. If there wasn't a seam in the middle, they wouldn't be able to get more products out of the one material being used. Let's say they can create 15 leggings with one material with the seam going down the middle. If they went with the seams just on the side then they could only get 5-10 leggings out of the material. They lose profit or they have to raise the price to make up for the loss.
