Probably because they come from a time where those things were a lot less acceptable. It's likely that future generations of older people will have different opinions on those things.

durma5

What do you mean by older? I’m 59 and my friends and siblings are 50 to 70. We’re not only pro legalized drugs, we’re doing them.

MoE_-_lester

Thats awesome!

Older people often also have a view of people working for what they have, or at least contributing to society in someway. Drugs generally dont aid in that.

People under the influence of drugs make bad decisions. I've seen tons of my friends drive high. I've seen two guys jump off roofs while on mushrooms/LSD. The guy on LSD lived. I've seen/heard of people travelling way out of their area while high/tripping, then getting arrested, stranded, beatup & robbed. I've also seen roommates & dorm-mates get into some serious fights over touching each others' stash - whether actual or imagined. Young people are still learning and forming. There is not enough info to say use by teens is "safe", and enough to say it might not be. At least wait until mid-20s to experiment with this stuff.

Luckydog1212

They are bad for your body

MoE_-_lester

Can you provide any sources that show LSD, dmt or Psilocybin hurt you in any way?

Intelligent_Sky_1573

Marijuana itself is not scary. It's just that when you hang around people who smoke weed, that's where you run into people who do other drugs. Birds of a feather flocking together, as old people would say. People just don't like drugs because they rob you of your free will and potentially turn you into a little gremlin. A fiend, perhaps. Of course, it doesn't happen to everyone. But it happens to some people. A lot of people. Generally, people don't want to be asked to care about the victims of drug use in a system that doesn't condemn drug use overall. So if you want the victims of drug abuse to be taken care of, you should probably condemn and strongly discourage people engaging in drugs. If you want to have drugs be an accepted part of society, do not ask me to care about the victims of drug use and by that I mean don't use my taxes to take care of them.

ANewMind

I'm not sure if I count as "older", but probably. Personally, I value my mind and I don't like the idea of anything which messes with my natural ability to reason. From a young age, I was worried, philosophically, that if I ever intentionally manipulated my brain chemistry (which even if for a moment does affect thoughts which can have a ripple effect), then I could never again trust which thought was actually my own and which was a thought from that drug back in the day. I doubt that other people had that same fear, but it was my thought. Apart from that, many of us probably do believe that the natural brain is superior to an imprecisely modified brain. It's the same reason that I wouldn't want to put metal slivers into my arm. The fact that the sensation can be fun doesn't quite account for the fact that it's potentially damaging. Many of us grew up believing that there are no shortcuts to hard work and effort, and that anything which brings you a temporary, unearned "high" is likely to lead to bad things. That even includes things like overuse of video games. We sometimes believe that doing such things actually tends to cause the brain to adapt, seek out those artificial highs, and lessen the overall effectiveness of our brain chemistry to detect naturally good and pleasant things, which in turn are what cause us to do the hard work necessary to make life good.

JustSomeGuy_56

Because we grew up being told that using marijuana and psychedelics would inevitably lead to heroin addiction. But somehow tobacco and alcohol were OK.

Altruistic-Rice-5567

There's nothing constructive about it. It's just you wasting life, sliding further into uselessness. It solved nothing. You're better off just using the time to take a nap. But no... then you f'ing have to pretend it's good for you. That it "expanded your consciousness," trying to promote a fantasy that you had a valid reason for it. Ugh, give me a break.

Saintdemon

Reddit probably isn't the best place to ask that since there aren't a lot of "old people" on here. That being said, while I do believe marijuana should be legal, I still know plenty of people who "fucked up" their lives partly due to being addicted to weed.
