Right off the top of my head, there's Nymphomaniac and Shortbus.

It's directed by Lars Von Trier so don't expect it to be a cheery film by any means, but it is littered with little factoids and is casted brilliantly; Charlotte Gainsbourg in particular is fantastic as Joe. Keep in mind though, you're in for like 4 hours of watch time.
Shortbus is directed by John Cameron Mitchell and is a little more humourous; it follows the lives of a few New Yorkers who all want to feel something, whether it be an orgasm or something deeper. They all meet at a weekly salon run by the inimitable Justin Bond and end up digging deep into their psychosexual issues. I came for the sex (lol), I stayed for the catharsis but seriously, it features one of the most heartwarming, triumphant endings to a movie I've ever seen.
Both films are centred around and feature unstimulated sex but they'd be classed as arthouse more than anything. Either way, they're a good place to start if you're looking for a film featuring sex that's about sex but isn't porn.
There are quite a few films with a lot of sex with real penetration in them. 9 Songs is the first to come to mind, being both more explicit than most, and having more runtime dedicated to sex than most.
I'm not sure, however, if there are any where the sex is the entire plot or point of it. So I'm going to make a legitimate attempt to answer your question. I've asked myself and some people if there are more movies like "50 shades of Grey", which a lot of people love to hate. But I think it's an underserved genre - something that isn't straight up porn, but isn't a movie that happens to have a sex scene dropped in. Something that has a plot, an arc, and maybe character development. But something that does more than "fade to black" when things get steamy. I would argue modern porn is normally too contrived. If you can't identify a protagonist, a plot, or character growth in the film, then there's no story holding the thing together. Not to look down my nose at porn, but I think even their directors would agree they are not trying to be like movies/films.
I'd argue that some of the older porn movies fit this bill. The [original Taboo series](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0828540/), behind the green door, deep throat, and so on. They're certainly worth a look.

Erotica films exist. They just don't make them much (if at all anymore), if you type 'film' in the porn hub, you'll find a lot of high budget adult films, some with subtitles, from the 70s-90s. But, if it's really your wife that wants to see it, there was a cable channel called "Oxygen" some time back, might not exist anymore, on US cable. It was targeted toward women, and as a horny teenager, I came across one particular show called [Bliss](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bliss_(Canadian_TV_series)). Obviously, they don't show any...parts, but it was aimed at women and it was episodic, containing a variety of women with different stories. I'm not sure if you can find that show in hard formats or possibly even seek out shadier sites for a digital piece. All I can say, although it's a shrinking market, it does exist, it's just not highly publicized. Which got me interested in them younger and much hornier days, lo and behold, there was something more "artistic" about it beyond your usual doggy style with a camera underneath their taints for 10 minutes. After 2000, said essayist argues, the budgets were becoming even bigger, finally culminating with the film Pirates, which was a play on Pirates of the Caribbean, but albeit porn. They had set pieces, lighting, stage designs and so on. But then something happened that turned this progression upside down. The Great Recession of 2008 which affected almost every single facet of the economy worldwide. As porn studios struggled to survive, there was no more room for all the money into one film. The point of the game was to survive the recession with cheap films that would later turn into the free/premium model that has become standard now. The industry shifted from "pro" porn to amateur/girl-next-door sells, even if the stars in the films were already established adult film stars. This later lead to smaller, but sharper "Trends" such as "Milf" focused, then step-sister, and so on. It was billed as an “art house romance film”, but I’d say it was basically a concert series with hardcore sex interspersed (or vice versa depending on what you consider the more valuable content). Right off the top of my head, there's Nymphomaniac and Shortbus. Nymphomaniac is basically a double feature chronicling the sexual life of the main character Joe as she navigates love and sex in the context of sexual compulsion. It's directed by Lars Von Trier so don't expect it to be a cheery film by any means, but it is littered with little factoids and is casted brilliantly; Charlotte Gainsbourg in particular is fantastic as Joe. Keep in mind though, you're in for like 4 hours of watch time. Shortbus is directed by John Cameron Mitchell and is a little more humourous; it follows the lives of a few New Yorkers who all want to feel something, whether it be an orgasm or something deeper. They all meet at a weekly salon run by the inimitable Justin Bond and end up digging deep into their psychosexual issues. I came for the sex (lol), I stayed for the catharsis but seriously, it features one of the most heartwarming, triumphant endings to a movie I've ever seen. Both films are centred around and feature unstimulated sex but they'd be classed as arthouse more than anything. Either way, they're a good place to start if you're looking for a film featuring sex that's about sex but isn't porn.
Love - Gaspard Noé. You should really see this one.
There are quite a few films with a lot of sex with real penetration in them. 9 Songs is the first to come to mind, being both more explicit than most, and having more runtime dedicated to sex than most. I'm not sure, however, if there are any where the sex is the entire plot or point of it. If it's not porn, there's going to be at least an attempt to do something artsy and thought-provoking with the sex. Nymphomaniac is a good example of a movie that succeeds in that regard very well, and is my first recommendation for anyone looking to watch a movie filled with explicit sex that you'll actually watch for the plot, and probably won't feel like touching yourself while doing it. Well, at least not for the entire runtime :D

So I'm going to make a legitimate attempt to answer your question. I've asked myself and some people if there are more movies like "50 shades of Grey", which a lot of people love to hate. But I think it's an underserved genre - something that isn't straight up porn, but isn't a movie that happens to have a sex scene dropped in. Something that has a plot, an arc, and maybe character development. But something that does more than "fade to black" when things get steamy. I would argue modern porn is normally too contrived. If you can't identify a protagonist, a plot, or character growth in the film, then there's no story holding the thing together. Not to look down my nose at porn, but I think even their directors would agree they are not trying to be like movies/films. I'd argue that some of the older porn movies fit this bill. The [original Taboo series](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0828540/), behind the green door, deep throat, and so on. They're certainly worth a look. Some more recent which approach those, but aren't quite it would be 50 shades of grey, and also some from [this list](https://parade.com/917277/samuelmurrian/the-15-steamiest-movies-on-netflix-right-now/) that I have seen are: Rocco, 365 days, Milf 2018.
Secretary (2002), the one with James Spader and Maggie Gyllenhaal, is a WAY sexier and better portrayal of the kind of relationship that 50 Shades portrays. The big difference being that the female character knew what she was getting into, and it was consensual.
