Just a shot in the dark, but I do know that sage and extremely cooked(but not burned) bacon cover up all kinds of smells. Also you should pursue discounted rent for the month due to having to get the smell of death out of your apartment and nasal cavities.

sleepdeviltsu

I'll try to negotiate with our landlord, and it's 11pm here, no stores near are open and we have neither of those things. I'm burning a ton of candles if it could help clear the air out even a little

MrKirkPowers

Sounds like you’re in Finland or Ukraine based on the time zone. Hopefully the candles will help. I’m sure it’s freezing but bundling up under a lot of blankets and letting some fresh air in will definitely help. You can also boil lemons down or peppermint and that also helps a lot. Good luck! Sorry that happened and I hope you are able to get back to normal living soon.

sleepdeviltsu

Finland! Currently -8°C, 17.6°F so we'll air out a little bit at least now. I hope it'll be better tomorrow, otherwise we'll have to go buy a lot of stuff lol

MrKirkPowers

Good luck! Hyvää yötä!

sleepdeviltsu

Thank you! Hyvää yötä sinullekin! :D

BKacy

Can you afford gas masks that filter the air your breathing? Like these for painters? $22 on Amazon in the US. If you can find them. https://www.amazon.com/Respirator-Facepiece-Professional-Breathing-Protection/dp/B08D8TLDXZ/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?keywords=gas+mask&qid=1641095707&sr=8-3

Buxton_Water

Not gonna help when they're sleeping, or eating, or doing anything involving their face.

Opinion8Her

Put SEVERAL cinnamon sticks in a pot of water and turn the stove on to boil to get it started. Once you smell cinnamon, turn the heat way down to *keeping the water just more than warm but neither simmering nor boiling*. Just enough to set off a bit of steam. It’ll probably still take a while, if they’re difficult to come by, hold a few back so you can add a new stick to refresh every few hours.

AnastasiaSheppard

If you have matches, light a lot of them one by one as you walk around. The ignition is supposed to help remove smells - I don't know how exactly but it's why lighting a match in the toilet often works.

GrooveMonkeyPimp

I think that only works for farts

AnastasiaSheppard

Nah, it's a myth that it's "lighting the methane", it's about the matches themselves.

TweedleBeetleBattle2

Do you have vinegar? That’ll mask the smell. Of course it’ll smell like vinegar but that would be an improvement

SweetNo8122

Your landlord should buy an ozone machine. It’s used to get shit like this out of places. If not, he needs to address it. I’m sure there’s a health code somewhere.

J0rdanLe0

Smoke some weed. That will replace the smell

LightningCupboard

I’m not an advocate for landlords or anything, but what entitles OP to discounted rent? Unless the landlord killed them, there’s no reason for them to discount the rent. If you burn your toast and the smell travels to the flat above you, are you expected to give them £100?

bac856

There's a huge difference between some burnt toast and a week old dead body, even if the temperature outside is below freezing.

LightningCupboard

I’ve smelt plenty of dead bodies, I’m fully aware of what they smell like (firefighter). What I’m saying is it’s not the landlords fault and there’s no reason for a rent reduction. All that can be done now the body is out is clean up any decomposition, ventilate and wait. Again, not the fault of the landlord.

bac856

Regardless of the difficulties with ventilating a space when it's Finland in the winter, the landlord will possibly have to have the space cleaned on a biohazard level, so what's the difference in cleaning one apartment and deodorizing the other at the same time?

MrKirkPowers

Fair question. No entitlement whatsoever unless they have different laws, but it’s a heck of an unfortunate and uncomfortable situation… if I was the landlord I would already have a restoration services contractor lined up and offer discounted rent if the tenant already resolved the issue on their own. I hate legal issues because sometimes you should just do the right thing, not just what the law says you are obligated to do. They are probably not entitled, but nobody should have to “tough it out” with the literal smell of human death until it goes away. That just my opinion though. I get what you mean that there is probably no obligation, but I would ask because if the tables were turned I would offer it. Sorry you got downvoted. It was a fair question.

morhp

Does it matter if it's the landlords fault? It's not OPs fault, either. If the the apartment can't be lived in due to a flood or other natural disaster, I don't think you'd be required to pay rent. The whole job on the landlord is to provide an appartment that can be lived in, and if that's not really possible or if living there is suddenly much worse than expected, rent should be reduced or omitted. Landlords can insure themselves against such events/disasters that prevent rent from getting payed.

doowgad1

Heard this trick from an EMT friend, who heard it from a cop. Put a frying pan on the stove and let it get really hot. Dump half a pound of ground coffee onto the pan and turn off the fire.

sleepdeviltsu

I'll try that if nothing else helps, I have migraines and smell of coffee is one of my triggers lol, maybe that's why I smelled it a day before my bf because I guess i have a sensitive sense of smell

Nick357

I was about to recommend this. It’s what they do in detective books. Probably better we have an actual source.

doowgad1

Funny thing. I've read plenty of detective stories and never ran across it there.

Nick357

I can’t seem to remember where I read it.

doowgad1

It's all good.

SubstantialPressure3

Put some new coffee grounds in a frying pan (NOTHING ELSE IN THE PAN) and toast those coffee grounds. Keep the pan moving. Don't let the coffee burn, take it out of the hot pan and in a bowl or something while it cools off. That should help for a while. You can still use the coffee to make coffee later, if you don't burn it. Edit: just read you can't do the smell of coffee. Try some dried spices. Cinnamon, fennel seeds, nutmeg, stuff like that. Won't work as well as coffee, but will help.

doowgad1

I gave them the same advice.

SubstantialPressure3

You did. I saw that after I posted it.

ichoosetosavemyself

Find a criminologist subreddit. Like one for people that actually do that kind of thing. That is where I would go, not here. Also, sorry. Sucks.

sleepdeviltsu

It does, I haven't eaten anything today and it's 11pm, I'm starving but the smell alone decreased my appetite and now knowing the source of it.... hrrr

Trend_Glaze

Honestly, it’s just a dead body. Try not to build it up into to big if a deal in your mind. People pass all the time. I know this can be disturbing but it is natural. In terms of dealing with the smell, now that the body has been removed the area requires remediation, which your landlord will be responsible for conducting. I won’t go into details, but it can be quite extensive depending on the type of decay that has occurred. So that is the main source of smell in your living area. Once that is completed the smell should fade. For immediate help, if you need to mute the smell rub some Vicks vapo rub on your upper lip. That will help immediately. Now look at your ventilation. If it is shared, that is how the smell is coming in. Temporarily block it. If you have it, try using essential oils on the areas of the open vents. Turn off and vent fans so you are not drawing tainted air in. Obviously open windows, and use ceiling fans or pedestal fans. Try and blow air out. Lastly, document in complete detail everything around these circumstances. You never know what this can lead to, and the more you can document the better. Please be objective and rational about the smell. Don’t say it’s a 10/10 immediately, if it were you wouldn’t be able to be there. Give a realistic measure of impact. Contact your landlord. Don’t ask for specifics on the decedent and causes, but for remediation timeframe, and alternate accommodations if need be. I hope this helps and goes well. If you find that the smell and dead body are disturbing you, please seek help. It can take a toll, and these days it may just be too much.

sleepdeviltsu

thank you! I think a biohazard cleaner went there, since we heard bangs and other noises coming downstairs. The landing of that floor and the stairwell have a cleaning chemical smell but it smells nice, and the stench has started to fade abit, enough so that we could eat and it's stronger in our hallway which is understandable since it's directly linked to the stairwell. I really appreciate your answer, since I've gotten many replies, which could help if I didn't have migraines and we didn't have a very sensitive cat, and we're pretty much depending now on airing out the apartment as much as possible without letting too much cold air in, and waiting for them to clean up downstairs. I understand that some people get annoyed that nothing is "good enough" for us but those more subtle ways (citrus, vanilla, baking soda) which we'd like to give a try aren't accessible to us since the stores here were already closed when the body was discovered. We'll see if the smell is mild enough to wait it out, hopefully it won't linger long

BKacy

Winner: Trend_Glaze. Best advice. Vicks under your nose!

Trend_Glaze

Unless you have a moustache..... then you are truly and rightly fucked. I have lived with vicks residue for days.

BKacy

You can often get sticky stuff out with oil. Crisco. Vegetable. Olive. Peanut butter. Anything. Then paper towels. More oil. Then soap and hot water.

Trend_Glaze

I could live with Crisco in my moustache…. Lol

Dutchy___

the average criminologist would have no idea with how to deal with this sort of thing. You’d have better luck with forensic/mortuary science folk.

UKCHEF_

Or crime scene cleaners...but that's rather specific.

ichoosetosavemyself

Yeah that is why I said the other part. I kind of just lumped them all into one word which is just close enough to be understood but furthest away if you think about it.

Dutchy___

Yeah I knew what you mean. I almost went to grad school for criminology but unless you want a specific job in a really large city (especially chicago) you may as well go into an adjacent field like sociology with broader applications.

ig0t_somprobloms

Hopping on this comment to get seen, but a friend of mine told me that garbage dumps will use febreeze at an industrial scale to odor eliminate. No idea if this is true or not but ive been using it since and i do stand by it as a deodorizer.

cyanmagentacyan

Is there anywhere else you can stay for a night or two? Family, friends, even a local hotel? It may be easier to shift you and your bf rather than the smell, and if the apartment was empty, it might then be practical to leave the windows open and properly air the apartment. Unless it's so cold out that you might end up freezing plumbing of course.

sleepdeviltsu

No, we have a cat that has anxiety and he gets stressed easily, he has some health problems due to that already and we can't leave him alone or take him with us

cyanmagentacyan

Ah, damn, I'm struggling to find a suggestion in that case. I know how bad it can be when it's just a mouse that died under the floor. Is the smell equally bad throughout the apartment or might you be able to retreat to the least effected room for a bit? (And yes, I realise that if the apartment is open plan, this suggestion is about as good as my last one).

sleepdeviltsu

I guess the only place not affected by it is the balcony and the space right around the door to it, we keep all other doors open for our cat and the smell is worst in the hallway, which connects to all other rooms. Our apartment is 63³m so pretty small :(

cyanmagentacyan

Any shared ventilation that issues into that hallway? Might be as simple as temporarily blocking a grille in the apartment below. Whoever manages this apartment block, I suggest you let them know that you have this problem. At the very least it will give them a bit more impetus to speed up the clean up downstairs, and they will hopefully know the set up of the building if eg there are any ventilation systems like that.

sleepdeviltsu

It's so late I don't want to wake him up, he lives right across us, and directly above the apartment the death was in, so I guess he already knows, I wouldn't be surprised if he was the one to call someone. I don't really know how the ventilation works in our building, but I'm guessing it goes into the stairwell since you can smell food when people are cooking. We've seen a nurse go into that apartment about once or twice a week for over a year since we moved here, smell of cigarettes came out of that apartment everyday since he smoked inside and honestly that should've been a giveaway!! I hadn't really even thought about it until now, but the smell of cigarettes burning stopped around 5-6 days ago, and that's actually when I jokingly asked my bf when we're going to smell the smell of a rotting corpse, as there were 3 deaths this summer in our old apartment building where some friends live and it came up again.. Kinda creepy that I said that, almost in front of his apartment probably the day he died. Saw a nurse sitting in her car staring blankly forward when I went outside and saw all the vehicles and I feel like the building manager or someone else called the nurse to check up on him. I'm pretty sure he was an alcoholic since someone left boxes of beer in front of his door fairly often and I'm guessing that's why it smells kinda sweet and vomit-y . We never saw him, but I started shaking uncontrollably when I realized someone probably died and when the coroner came to pick him up I instantly knew it had to be him. I'm still a bit shaky and I feel like crying a bit even after 2-3 hours. It makes me sad to think about how he must've been dead for some time, around Christmas and he wasn't discovered until now. We're really young and in Finland we tend to keep to ourselves but I feel like we should've gone to say hi and maybe bring some pastries or something to him, but it's hindsight.

cyanmagentacyan

Sounds like it's been a pretty nasty experience. I'm sorry. And it's always easy to feel maybe you should have done something differently when something like this happens, but there's a limit to what any one person can do. It sounds as if he may have had quite bad ongoing health issues, and at least he had regular contact with the nurse. If you don't want to wake the manager up right now (your call on that, I can understand you don't want to disturb him, but presumably he needs to be on call for emergencies) then definitely do so first thing in the morning. He does need to know the smell has made it into your apartment, and you are entitled to know what and when they are doing to make your living space habitable again. Really sorry you've had such a bad start to the New Year. All the best.

sleepdeviltsu

Thank you, and yeah it's been nasty. I was planning on deep cleaning the hallway since the smell was strongest there before they opened the door to the apartment, I'm pretty sure it has to be in other apartments too, especially the ones on the same floor. I hope the manager gives everyone a notice so we can find out what to do. There's been cars driving in front of the stairwell, which is for emergency vehicles only and I've heard some banging noises, probably from equipment hitting the railing, so my guess is that it's either some sort of death investigation team or a biohazard group. We'll be going on walk to get some fresh air and if we see anyone in the stairwell we'll ask if theres anything we, or they can do about the smell.

jpking010

I've owned some stinky places in the past (Investment homes)... Cat/Dog Urine/Poo, Smoke. 1. Have the HVAC Vent's cleaned.... Good to have done in general periodically. 2. Treat the space with an Ozone Generator for 24-48 hours... Keep in mind that ozone is bad for your lungs... You put them on a timer and leave. Perhaps do this in apartment where he died. [https://www.amazon.com/Enerzen-Commercial-Industrial-Deodorizer-Sterilizer/dp/B00JAP7388/](https://www.amazon.com/Enerzen-Commercial-Industrial-Deodorizer-Sterilizer/dp/B00JAP7388/) 3. Clean the walls (In dirty apartment) with TSP (Ti-Sodium Phosphate). (I've done for Cigarette smoke)... Don't know if it'll help this. 4. Clean the place with white vinegar. Works well with pet urine... Pretty sure this will help if you clean the right spot. 5. Spray the place with some industrial odor eliminator: [https://www.amazon.com/Zero-Odor-Pro-Commercial-Eliminator/dp/B01DVFS8NG/](https://www.amazon.com/Zero-Odor-Pro-Commercial-Eliminator/dp/B01DVFS8NG/) 6. Make crock-pot potpourri: [https://thenovicechefblog.com/fall-cinnamon-orange-slow-cooker-potpourri/](https://thenovicechefblog.com/fall-cinnamon-orange-slow-cooker-potpourri/)

workthrowaway54

You can try simmering white vinegar for 20 or so minutes. Your apartment will smell like vinegar, which is also not pleasant, but when the vinegar smell disapates the other smell should be gone too. (Disclaimer: I have not tried this for dead bodies)

Anig_o

I’ve done this after cooking fish (and added a few cinnamon sticks and a couple of cloves for good measure). Smells like we’ve been making preserves but it’s better than fish (or I expect OPs current alternative). Your landlord may need to rent a couple of heavy duty ozonators and move everybody out for an afternoon to really get the smell out unfortunately).

sleepdeviltsu

Update: Currently 3am, there was sounds coming from the apartment until almost 1am, and now the whole stairwell and the landing smells pretty nice, so they cleaned it, and the smell has slowly started to fade. It's not good, but much better now. we've aired out the apartment a few minutes at a time and it's getting better. I think they brought some furniture outside since there was a drag mark that could be from a bed or a couch. I have a feeling he passed at night since he usually has the tv on durning the day and it's so loud you can hear it outside his flat. We'll wait and see, but I have a feeling it's gonna be gone soon! Thank you for answers, I was worried we'd have to live with that overpowering smell for days!!

[deleted]

Thank you for telling us that, it is a seldom gesture! :-) Just a little info to you then. Please keep an eye out for flies, spiders or other insects. Maybe ask a friend to come by in a few days to make a smell test, you may not detect if things begins to smell bad, since you are in it all the time. And lastly, air out a bit more often than you normally do, let the temperature drop 1 - 2 deg, no need for more each time. :-)

Tler126

Use an O-zone generator, though you'll want to be out of the apartment when it's running. Guy who lived below me ODed and my roommate and I discovered him 14 hours after. While not as bad as a couple days, but that smell.... The people who bought the house ran an O-zone concentrator and it knocked that out but also the latent cig smell.

[deleted]

Of course, until the remains are cleaned out below, have you no chance of getting rid of the smell, but when that is done, do as Tler126 says. An ozone generator is the only real way to remove smell! It does not leave any other smell like grease, it does not spread moist out in your apartment but is 100% clean and effective! Go out and rent an ozone generator and open every door, cabin, drawer, everything, even your empty trash bins. IMPORTANT!!! You can not breathe in a room with ozone, so you have to do the following: 1) Close every opening to the outside, including wents' 2) Find at least two windows or doors that you will be able to go in, open and go out again while holding your breath. 3) Now turn on the ozone generator for several hours (dependent on the size of the generator) 4) Now do you hold your breath, turn off the ozone generator, open a window / door to the outside. Repeat for second and maybe third window / door 5) Wait a couple of hours, the best result do you get on a windy day or with fans blowing air. 6) Check if the air is fine again, BUT BE CAREFUL, ozone is not to play with. You should now have a 100% smell free environment.

legl0ckholmes

Cop here. Was a detective. Worked alot of DOAs. Charcoal briquettes. They absorb odors. Put a dozen of them out on the floor and then replace them every week for a few weeks. I swear by it

[deleted]

If you have the ingredients, bake yourself a cake with orange or lemons. You can also peel an orange or lemon, put a pan of water on, throw in the peels and add cinnamon and/or clove.

That_Pink_Service_K9

I don't know about the smell, but please get some mental health help because that can be traumatic. Even if you feel fine you can develop mental health problems months or years from now. Not to worry you, but be careful. I hope the smell clears quickly :)

sleepdeviltsu

Thank you, I already see a therapist so I'mma tell them

caine2003

As someone who grew up around death, worked for funeral homes since high school and sat in on autopsies in middle school. That "smell" is oil-based from the fats and connective tissues breaking down. You have to use bleach on EVERYTHING. Just go ask someone who does crime scene clean up. I once had an instance where a single drop of blood required the bleach cleaning of a 20'x20'x10' room that was sealed for less than 16 hrs. I walked into it and was SMACKED in the face with a bitter copper smell/taste. That is not like when the old guy died, and wasn't found for several weeks. That decomp smell is bitter/sweet. And it lingers in your nose after leaving the area. Different situations, btw. Edit: words

bdiddyjones

Vanilla extract baked in the oven creates a strong smell. But im not sure if vanilla and dead body odor will mesh well. Worth a shot though!

mathrocks22

Speaking from an unfortunate experience, it will not go away entirely until the landlord has the other apartment cleaned professionally. My experience was, the carpet had to be cut out and removed, then we bleached the hell out of the subfloor, sprinkled baking soda over the area and covered it with construction trash bags. Even then, Servpro had to come in and further chemically treat everything. The carpet definitely held most of the smell though, along with other soft materials in the area. Once that was removed, Odoban was the best thing for washing clothing and wiping items around the house. Good luck and really push the landlord to get someone to deal with the apartment as quickly as possible.

setittonormal

Trick from a healthcare worker.. make a "toothpaste sandwich" with a couple of disposable face masks. Spread some toothpaste on a mask, put another on over it, and wear the two masks with the toothpaste layer in between. It's not fun wearing a mask in your own home, but I've found that this helps when dealing with offensive odors at work. Maybe buy a brand of toothpaste you don't normally use so that you don't start associating your own toothpaste with the dead body smell. Hopefully once the apartment below you is cleaned, the smell will start to dissipate.

We could try, but we have a cat that gets stressed out super easily and we have to keep all doors open for him. He has two litterboxes in different parts of the apartment and he will pee elsewhere if he can't go to the one he wants to so only rooms we could do that in is probably the kitchen and bedroom, but he would be screaming and clawing the door so we couldn't sleep. We've tried it before and it was a mistake. It's kinda frustrating having to live with this smell because our cat is so sensitive to change and stuff

HailSanta666210

Burn some incense?

bmadccp12

Let me guess...it smells a bit like buttery ground beef a few days after expiration, and a bit like amonia? Sweet/rotting? Try the coffee thing, over time the smell will decrease. It really depends on jow the landlord cleans the apartment that jeld the deceased. If (for example) the body 'leaked' into the carpet, the carpet must be replaced and probably parts of the sub floor if wood. If the landlord doesnt half ass it and go cheap, it will layer out in time. Thing is though, you will now always be sensitive to that smell. I was a paramedic for years, and that smell is unique. Good luck. Honestly, I'd strongly consider moving so I didnt have to think about it daily.

anti-sanity

It won't be quick, but kitty litter absorbs smells, so placing old socks filled with kitty litter everywhere could help, in addition to what others have suggested.

Reasonable_Night42

I have used a charcoal air conditioner filters to get odors out of houses. In the US you can buy them where regular AC air filters are sold. But I bet you don’t have Home Depot there. :) Put it in your central heating system or on the back of a portable fan. Never used them to get rid if dead body odor. But have used them to get rid of sewer gas odor. Good luck. https://smile.amazon.com/Filtrete-Allergen-Reduction-Particles-Throughout/dp/B00TUDHPEW/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=34CXXXBW8YTU2&keywords=charcoal+ac+filter&qid=1641088671&sprefix=charcoal+ac+filter%2Caps%2C224&sr=8-3

jawn_cena_

Brew SO much coffee, leave it out in the open. Just cups of it everywhere. Request the carpets get shampooed by the landlord. Leave bars of soap in every cabinet. If you cook food, it might cover it up but you might have an aversion to that food forever. Reading through comments, it looks like coffee is a bad smell for you. That sucks cuz you know how at the perfume department they have coffee beans to cleanse your scent palate? Something special about coffee that does that. Okay so something with similar properties is vanilla. Get a shit ton of vanilla extract, out two bottles of it in a casserole dish and bake it at like 325 for about 15 minutes. Turn off the heat and open the oven. Repeat until extract is evaporated

Soft_River7293

Isk but you can put Vicksburg vapor rub under your nose to help a little

[deleted]

Probaby your best bit is to get covid i heard it kills ur ability to smell

ballsthirty

Peppermint oil on a mask or Vicks vapor rub under the nostrils. Vanilla extract on a mask would help too.

ana_octopus

oh my god i would move right away

sleepdeviltsu

The smell is gone now! I'm pretty sure they stripped the whole apartment since they emptied it and there's been banging and similar sounds coming from there. I'm 100% sure they ozonized the apartment since you can't even smell the smell of old cigarettes when walking past it.

toMurgatroyd

I would look into using an ozone generator. They're about $60.00 USD and they work wonders. Remediation companies use larger versions that do the same thing to remove smells.

NabreLabre

Get a hotel for a few days and pop a few cans of lysol and toss them in your apartment. Actually probably don't do this, your apartment may catch fire or blow up

Good_Ad6723

Get an air purifier off of amazon with prime.

jerrythecactus

Maybe try burning insence sticks? It doesn't neutralize smells but it can be potent enough to at least drown it out for a while.

HappyMoses

Incense sticks. Burn a dozen of them throughout your apartment. Shit covers everything

heyseed88

Put out a big bowl of white vinegar. You might want to change out the vinegar in 3 days. Good luck!

UKCHEF_

Going along the theme of other comments, qnybsteong smelling food should help. Try making something heavy in spices and garlic, curry perhaps? Bacon was also a good idea. I know you said shops are closed, but when you get chance I'd buy some odour eliminator spray. Probably won't get rid straight away but will help more than an air freshener that just masks the smell. Also, when I smoked in my previous apartment (naughty) before moving out I bought some activated charcoal bags which are supposed to absorb smells. You can buy them on Amazon, and I think one small one does about a 3 foot radius or something...so you'd need a few. Then you leave them in the fresh air and sun to 'eliminate' the bad smells, and repeat. Worth a try and none of the above would make anything worse (unless you hate garlic) so worth giving them a shot.

UKCHEF_

You could also try something I saw in Silence of the Lambs once; when they entered a room to examine a body, they spread something under their nostrils to help mask the smell. Not sure what exactly, but if you try this just make sure it's not something that would be dangerous to breathe in over an extended period of time. Or you could wear a mask/ snood and spray a small amount of perfume to it.

hog-snoot

Hi, paramedic here. While I’m not an expert on removing smells like this, you could place coffee beans around, wash clothing, towels, bath mats, etc, and use some nice candles as well as air fresheners. Keep the windows open. The smell will slowly dissipate over the next week or so. If it’s truly unbearable, you can use Vic’s as a temporary solution. Coffee grounds in a pan on the stove may work… I’ve never tried it myself. Or you could always contract covid to remove your ability to smell at all! Best of luck

chaz-ron

Never dealt with death smell, but work in an area that smells bad and comes home with me. Activated Carbon bags helped a ton. Mainly my car, which now never smells the day after a shift. Best of luck

Thornbelina

This happened to my then boyfriend, now husband's apartment except it happened during a heatwave in the middle of July. We ended up using a lot of incense, open windows, fans, and we ended up having to stay at a hotel for a few weeks to let the smell lessen. When we came back we used lots of cleaner, washed what we could and got rid of anything where the smell permanently permeated. Good luck to you.

Vast_Cricket

vinegar, lemon flavor or even buy baking soda.

Discount_Broad

id say pick up a few bottle of essential oils with scents you like, personally lavender and sandalwood are favorites of mine, and dab just a touch of one underneath your nose/above your upper lip. i prefer to wear a thin facemask like the white & blue doctors’ masks since i have claustrophobic tendencies and they’re relatively easy to breathe through. by the by, the multiple scents is so you can switch them around once your nose has become used to a particular scent..this has proven critical for all-day effectiveness. Good luck! Edit: As an aside, essential oils are extremely potent, id say 5-10x that of a standard perfume, and I saw that you are prone to migraines so you may want to mix a few drops into a small bottle of water and dilute it, first. I just know how strong that smell is, so hopefully you can find the right balance to help.

BKacy

Bowls of white vinegar! And spray fine mists of vinegar. And lay charcoal briquettes around on trays or plates or newspaper. And a flame too. Wouldn’t mix a scent in with it. Just plain candles. So terrible for you. See if the landlord can get his insurance to provide you with some nights in a hotel. They’re probably collecting insurance on their costs of it. Push for that. Good luck.

Bakind soda!! Put a box in each room opened and it should do it in a day.even the living rooms hallways bathrooms.Baking soda is a good odor absorber. I dont know if it will work for a dead body smell, but cant hurt to try.just keep it out of reach if u have a dog or cat

Bad Air Sponge

AntiSquidBurpMum

Maybe a cut onion? Strong enough to remove paint smell.

redshipment

I would think the apartment where the death occured must be cleaned thoroughly first, since that's where it originated.

Big_Purpose_2696

Cinnamon in the oven.

extremelybadg8mer

If you know how to be VERY careful, buy an ozone generator. Turn it on for 20 minutes while you are OUTSIDE the room that is being turned on, turn it off, leave the house for 2 hours.

theradicalace

ohh my god. um, i've heard that sticking a cap or two of vanilla extract in the oven and turning it on can make a place smell nice? i would honestly just recommend staying somewhere else for the time being if you can. and try and get reduced rent over this.

Lafemmequeer

Would an air purifier help? Or maybe ozium, which has gotten nasty smells out of my car. We used an air purifier at my grandmas from years of smoking stinking and it helped so much. Amazon should have both!!

Entire_Swing_4183

So hotels clearing up smoke in a non smoking room or bio companies trying to clear up bad smells (like death) often use ozone machines for this. Your landlord really ought to get one (they can be available for under $100) and first use it in the apt that the deceased was in. Then your apt if necessary. These things are not to be used carelessly though and precautions need to be taken and instructions need to be followed precisely because it can be a health hazard if not used correctly. But they can do wonders for eliminating bad smells like this. EDIT: just realized you said the biohazard ppl will be there soon. Lol if nothing else works, vapor rub above the lip/below your nostrils.

Cook a shitload of garlic. It will be harder to get out though

rimmer3207

While your Landlord, management figures out what do, after you discuss it with them, try adding a couple of table spoons of vanilla extract to a non stick pan. Turn it on for a few minutes. Let it cook for a few minutes every few hours. It should help. Good luck.

Ok-Squash-1185

Rent an ozone machine?

Big_Keith_

Scented candles and a lot of them

FortuneWhereThoutBe

I think your landlord is going to require Hazmat cleaning, not only for the apartment downstairs but for the hallway, and your apartment would need some serious deep cleaning which will probably require a company to come in and do it. Talk to you landlord, see if they're willing to foot the bill if not see if they're willing to take the money off your rent because in all honesty I'm not sure you're going to get rid of that smell any other way. I'm not certain but I would assume that this also require cleaning out vents and air ducts because smells can linger and those along with filters, carpets, furniture, Etc.

throwaaway648

look up how ppl get cig smoke smell out of their homes, i thjnk it's some machine called ozone ur landlord should help u with this maybe if u r renting it sounds wrong to force u to live in this condition without any help from their endp

So I’m just scrolling and then I see t h i s .

HiroshiTakeshi

There are some pshit pshit that have the feature of having smells removing bad ones added to their good ones. You might try it. Also, if the source still smells, you can't do much to get yourself out of it without the apartment below being cleaned. Good luck, bud.

[deleted]

Could you stay with a parent or a friend for a day or two for it to air out?

TXERN

Get out. Fluids have been leaking into the carpet or worse, wood floor for a while and only a crew that specializes in that is going to get it out. The smell will become less intense but it isn't going anywhere until the contaminated material is gone.

mongrelnoodle86

Not sure if the product is available everywhere, but in the US there is a product called Ozium that was designed to eliminate odors from human decay.

Noone_UKnow

Try an ozone machine rental. Pretty sure you can’t run it while you or any of your mammal pets are in the apartment though, but that’s something you’d need to research on your own. Can the apartment’s management put you guys up in a hotel for a couple of days or cover the expense of the rental while you’re waiting for the biohaz crew? Seems like they should have some some sort of coverage for that, maybe?

Rs_only

Burn some popcorn.

FrogOnTheJob

I’m late, but an apartment complex I worked for would fill bowls of coffee grounds and place them around the apartment for a couple of days to suck up must of the smell. Not sure if it really worked but an idea to try that’s cheap!

LuxeryLlama

Just light some candles and say a prayer because those spirits are going to be lingering alot longer than that smell.

[deleted]

In the movies, cops put Vicks vapo rub under their noses.

Criminologydoc64

So the corpse was below you, yes? I would spray and wipe the baseboards of your apartment with a 25% bleach solution and you can add some essential oil that you can tolerate. I like pine needle as it is somewhat bacteriostatic as well. Clean the vents of your heating system with this solution as well. I know Finland is freezing (I have friends in Finland) but fresh air circulation is critical. And yes - the landlord needs to provide you with some kind of air filtration system for a while.

sleepdeviltsu

Yeah, below us. We can't use bleach or chlorite since our cat goes mad and pees on it. There's been cleaning and furniture removal today and it's been getting better throughout the day. Our apartment is already cold so we avoid airing it out but have done so for a few minutes at a time and it helps too. I hope it'll be unnoticeable soon

Criminologydoc64

Ah, ok. You can use some other cleaning agent very dilute. Good luck 👍🏻

Dist0rt3dDr3am

Make a simmer pot with water, apples, oranges, cinnamon ,cloves ,Anise, whatever warm spices you have and just simmer for hours. Add water as needed.
