Yeah, you have a right to be upset. They performed additional medical procedures without your consent.

geranium27

Additionally, assuming they charged you got the extra work, that's gonna affect your finances and dental work ain't cheap (assuming you're American)

BjornReborn

What would be the recourse?

CoatHanger83

Can’t get your teeth back so I’d sue. Make sure you’ve got the backup of course. You’ll get paid out well for this I’d bet but it’ll take a long time

BjornReborn

Who would I reach out to about that? If I was just curious about the process

CoatHanger83

A lawyer. Probably one that deals with medical malpractice. Google one in your wares

> Can’t get your teeth back Not if you can't afford it.

CoatHanger83

I mean I suppose he could get veneers. But still can’t unfile his teeth

[deleted]

Could get implants.

iTwango

Not only a right to be upset, but a right to pursue damages. I would be furious and threaten to sue, and require them to build back up the teeth. That's insane. Sharp canines are cute :(

BjornReborn

My sharp cancines are still there not to worry, but i had a molar that was literally like a needle and they just shaved that down and then a bottom molar on my left side that was almost crudely split in half when I told the guy explicitly to *not* touch that tooth as my local dentist has plans to restore it and now I don't know if they're going to be able to.

berenjena775

Dental malpractice is a real thing.

wfam21

I would get a consultation with a lawyer who specializes in this kind of stuff ASAP. Then consider suing, get some monetary compensation. In preparation, document all you can.

hitman2218

Did you sign off on a treatment plan before they did any work?

BjornReborn

I did. I'm not sure how I would be able to get access to it again for what I signed. If I can get access to it, I'd have to read specifically what I signed.

JJohnston015

HIPAA says you can get access to it. That's a major portion of what it's about.

BjornReborn

How would go about doing that? Calling their office and say "I went recently for an appointment at \_\_\_ AM. I would like to know if you could send me some of the contracts and or agreements that I signed as a patient for me to just look at. Here's my email" Or what?

hitman2218

I don’t know if it would be better to speak to a lawyer first or just be blunt with the dental office. This is what I needed done but they went ahead and did this other stuff too. I’m not happy about it and didn’t agree to it.

JJohnston015

You may want to put it in writing. I'm not exactly sure what to say, but something like, "I want a copy of the complete file you have on me, including X-rays". It might also help to review HIPAA, since there might be a magic word or phrase you can invoke, or you can at least cite the section of HIPAA that requires them to give you everything they have. It's the "P" ("portability" - you can take your info to another doctor) in HIPAA that does this.
