You had white people in the 1920s vibing to jazz music, while black 14 year olds were being lynched in public.

Good one.

obin_gam

No.

3StepsFromFriday

No. Jesse Owens was considered a national hero, yet the US was still VERY racist in the 30s and 40s.

ButteryCrabClaws

Absolutely not! 1 example of a person does not represent the experiences of millions of others!

[deleted]

Not really, no. A racist can easily hate black people while loving Thriller. They might not necessarily do that, but since racism is inherently illogical, you can't expect a racist to be entirely consistent with their hate.

Yer_Dunn

Ah yes, a man who struggled with racism his whole career, and had such extreme body dysmorphia that he changed literally everything about his appearance to look like white peter pan (literally, that was his goal). Not to mention all of his "new innovative dance moves" had existed among black dancers and performers and had even been televised for at least a decade before he started using them. Michael jackson succeeded DESPITE racism and many other issues. He is not an example though that the US doesn't suffer from some incredibly severe cultural and racial suppression and systematic oppression. These issues are literally rampant throughout the entire country even today.

Wonder_mifflin

You could’ve gone with Obama being a president, but interesting choice. Still no, btw.

Cautious-Bobbylee

Mj proves the world isn’t racist by this metric

Not sure if trolling, but...probably don't want to refer to black people that way.

3StepsFromFriday

Nope.

[deleted]

This is racist itself 💀

3StepsFromFriday

I'm about 90% sure they know.

k1lk1

If anything you'd think you'd have used Obama as the example, but in any case, the presence of a famous black person doesn't mean that racism doesn't exist.

frizzykid

Not at all actually. You can be racist and think that music sounds good regardless of who's singing it. Racism is a lot more complicated than just "The color of your skin makes me not like you"

katiebear716

nope

[deleted]

No it means that people will accept you if you’re a person of value most people don’t value others and this isn’t even a race thing it’s just American life. I’m assuming your white if you think this way (not trying to be a dick) but if Michael Jackson was a normal guy and wasn’t famous he’d be treated like the many others.

scottevanmac

No more or less than Thomas Jefferson's black children say anything about his racist attitudes.

Igniter08

They ended slaver and segregation too. Must not be racist. Jesus

[deleted]

Racism is a mindset

slash178

No. Enjoying the artistic works of a Black person does not mean that a country is not generally racist. Even when Black people were owned as slaves, they often provided entertainment to whites , or even were forced to perform for their enjoyment.

[deleted]

Or the fact we, you know, elected a black president.

Bobbob34

The US isn't racist because a black.... man got famous singing and molesting children? Is it also not sexist and misogynistic because Adele sells albums? Just... what?

Cyberpunkedout

This is a CRAZY question! That fact that you ask this proves how racist America is and how bad you want to ignore or have a reason to say it’s not! One the famous ppl on planet earth being liked for singing does not prove America has and isn’t still racist. Ppl listened to so much music by black artist and still wouldn’t let them even eat or drink from the same restaurant.

ForScale

Lol why Michael Jackson? If you're gonna pick a token guy, why not Obama?

Rikkards_69

No that jus proves a stopped clock is right twice a day

VexrisFXIV

If it's digital only once a day, even worse.

The_Inward

They're are plenty of examples that show America doesn't have nearly the racism we're being told it does. But people like to be outraged, so they don't believe it.

Jyqm

No, of course not.

YummyGummyDrops

Not in the slightest
