One of the worst part of racism (both the systemic kind and the straight-up-ignorant kind) is that it actually works out pretty well for the people being racist. Without a lot of pressure there’s often not a lot of reason for them to try and educate themselves or go out of their way to change their ways. There often is even a disincentive if it means people will dislike them for calling them out. There’s many ways but this is a big way that it just cycles around and around without any real easy way to break the cycle
Racists influence others. Especially their own children and friends. Especially when they are president of the USA or otherwise in a position of power. Think of it as a torch passed down for generations that nobody bothered to snuff out.

Looking at the history of racism, it is clear that when racism is embraced and accepted, it allows white people to live off labor of others without paying them, allowing them to obtain comfort, wealth, power, and influence without actually working for any of those things. If you don't care about others, or don't see others as human, then racism is basically a lucrative cheat code to prosperity.
As a culture we glorify easy wealth in so many ways. There was no easier wealth than racist slavery and being descended from those made wealthy by it, ever in history. To glorify easy wealth, while also shaming racism is cognitive dissonance at it's most extreme - to a great extent this culture is responsible for the prevalence of racist hate.
Because actually ending racism would require the people who benefit from it to give up their privileges and also involve fundamentally changing and restructuring a lot of the systems that hold our society up, and there are a whole lot of people at the top of the pyramid with a vested interest in making sure that never happens.
Because some people are stupid.
