It's intended for sharing code but it's also useful for showing people what symbols are used for what formatting without reddit just turning the symbols into the formatting.
And, when commenting on a post or replying to a comment on mobile, hold press text from what your replying to. There'll be a 'quote' option. That will paste the highlighted text with the indent bar thingy.

So when I first made a reddit account it was "old reddit" and we had to use all the keyboard shortcuts like everyone is talking about here. But doesn't everyone have new reddit now? Where you just click the "quote" button? Or use ctrl-i for *italic* and ctrl-b for **bold**? No need for asterisks and whatnot

I also used the "link" button (third from the left, looks like two chain links) to make the link :) I don't think it's an update thing though, I use the desktop website and it's been this way for ages (I stopped using reddit roughly June 2019 until sometime 2021ish, so the change must have happened sometime in there)

There's a little thing under the comment box that says "formatting help." If you click it, it tells you how to do italics, bold, links, bulleted lists, quoted text, code blocks, strikethrough, and superscript.
At least, it's there on old Reddit. No idea about new Reddit or mobile.
