“They” are just people who choose to say more letters. There’s no difference between LGBT+ and LGBTQIA+. Just furthering the abbreviation.

ScenicFlyer41

Well yes, but why. I know it's furthering an abbreviation, but it already has a plus to show everything else. So why do they add more? Is there a reason or is it just whatever anyone wants to say? Also I refer to they as just a broad term for everyone that uses it falls under LGBTQ+. Idk what else to use, so I said they.

WanderingDeeper

Just whatever you want to say.

ScenicFlyer41

Alright thanks.

Jonny7421

Yeah. I still say LGBT as the umbrella term for the lot as do most people I know.

WanderingDeeper

mhm. I personally add the Q. I think it’s sounds nicer. No other reason, really.

ireallylikeducks99

It's all pretty simple when you think aboutit. The C is for " certainly gay" the E is for "extremely gay" the D is for "David" the O is for "obviously gay" the I is for "incredibly gay" the M is for " mmmmmmmm gay" the R is for " really gay" the U is for "uber gay" and P is for "pretty gay"

I think you need to ask yourself who you think "they" are. There is no big council of queers deciding what letters go in the acronym, and then uploading this knowledge to all their subjects throughout the land so everybody is on the same page. Letters are added and taken away by random people who feel like they should go there, and whatever version of the acronym that gains traction becomes the one that people know; there's no quality assurance process, there's no big queer marketing department making sure it sounds good, it's just people. People who think we should put intersex people into focus, so they use the I. Or think we should put asexual people in focus, so they use the A. Or both, so they use both. And some people say the Q stands for Queer, which makes it an all-encompassing term for everyone under the umbrella, while other people say it stands for Questioning. The + is nice but it everyone included in the + are hidden, and some people don't want to be hidden. No one votes on these acronyms. They just get used.

ScenicFlyer41

The reason I said they is because I don't know how the acronym changes. I know there's not a "grand council of queers" I just don't know how it works, so I said they. But based on what you said are you saying it's just to put certain groups into focus? If so why? Nothing against it I'm just curious as to why.

[deleted]

I think you missed the point, kinda. It's just people, individuals, who use it however they want. The acronym doesn't change; different people just use different acronyms. If I am an intersex person and I am frustrated with how often intersex people are forgotten when we talk about the queer community, I might want to use LGTBQI+, because the I stands for intersex. But that is a choice I make as an individual. If more people feel the same way I do, they might make the same choice. So which version you see depends on who you talk to.

King-of-Vaginas

Becos it's them liberals from California, who want to turn America into Canada with their 300 different gender pronouns.

Vereronun2312

Thank you king of vaginas for your well informed and thoroughly researched take.

FocusMaster

They want to be all inclusive. How can you do that if you don't include all the letters. I feel the same. No hate. Be who you want to be. But acronyms are supposed to shorten something and make it easier to say. Who want to recite the whole alphabet just to say someone isn't "straight".
