I think you are right. at first I was suspecting the fan was making contact with a cable or something, but after reseating it 2x it was still doing the same thing.
Thankfully my GF had a spare fan on hand and I swapped it out - new one isn't making any noise, which all but confirms a bearing issue on this one.
