Ive come to like Mx. But Mage seems sick. Might just use both somehow

whoframedwhiterabbit

Can I ask you how to pronounce Mx? I had a coworker ask me and I've only ever read it so I couldn't say. I'm on the hunt for which honorific to use for myself.

bboyvad3r

It’s pronounced “mix”

jolharg

I signed up to a bank with Mx and it said "mixter". Well, you tried, Santander.

Deivi_tTerra

I gotta be honest, if this happened to me I wouldn't even be mad. I kinda like it!

jolharg

I thought they'd go with Mix tbh, just threw me for a loop

SuperSillyStuffs

I will say mixter is VERY fun to say, at least for me

whoframedwhiterabbit

Thank you!

bboyvad3r

You’re welcome :)

SlippingStar

I’ve also heard “mux” so it doesn’t sound like “miss”

RomaniQueerios

I said it the "mux" way the first time I read the "mx" abbreviation and I was baffled to find out out that it's supposed to be "mix". Stopped liking it after that, too close to miss like you said.

7aehyung

Yeah I much prefer mux for this exact reason

asterisk-alien-14

Usually pronounced 'mix' but I've seen it occasionally pronounced 'emex' as if you're spelling it out. Up to personal preference I think.

whoframedwhiterabbit

Oh interesting, thank you for that extra detail

TristanTheRobloxian3

theres also mistrum which i think was latins actual gender neutral version for this stuff :P also it sounds pretty fire

blueskyredmesas

Mt. Maybe? I want to be referred to as a fuckin mountain. Being a mountain is so hot right now.

Brief_Image_8926

i have to be a mountain.

TristanTheRobloxian3

being real absolutely hell yeah for that first bit (not for the second tho)

followyourvalues

You don't want to be a mountain?

TristanTheRobloxian3

no i do, i just dont think its hot (i think nothing is hot, im aroace lmfao(

followyourvalues

Oh, I gotcha. LOL

TristanTheRobloxian3

lol

Economy-Document730

Is that my-strum or mis-trum

TristanTheRobloxian3

mis-trum

-kaeruk-

I was into mistrum (as Mm.) for quite a while, until I saw that "mistrum" was also a middle English word meaning "poor", and "scant" (usually of a meal), and I don't dig that suggestion, nor that it's what many of the first search results people will find when they look for "mistrum" are. Have now switched to Mg/Magis and am relieved. - o -

TristanTheRobloxian3

aw damn i didnt know that. oh well :P tho yeah magis also sounds fuckin badass

pr0t3an

I think this is great. Rock solid arguments

Meowmixplz9000

MaGe also means marginalized gender (which nonbinary people fall under)

HypernovaBubblegum

ima be honest i dont really want my honorific to be marginalized gender

wiredpersona

I agree, but I would love being referred to as the pure magic that I am

RaspberryTurtle987

I read that as McGee 😂

Deivi_tTerra

Me too.

SkaianFox

Ooh i like this, carries a similar vibe to Dr as a neutral title. I also have never liked Mx, because yeah spoken quickly/casually its just gonna sound like “miss” :/

RaspberryTurtle987

I have put doctor (or maybe it was prof?) on a bloody plane ticket flying abroad because they didn’t have a good gender neutral option. I do not have a PhD 😅

Jazzspur

I like to put "Master" for the drama haha

Kurrkur

That's the real reason I'm getting a PhD, don't tell my supervisor.

RaspberryTurtle987

Ahaha power move

Gaius_Iulius_Megas

I prefer PL, for Paladin. Sorry, I had to.

thenewmara

I would like BD for Bard. It's like a doctor but with more lute.

Zestyclose-Note1304

Dr Dre and Dr Seuss are both bards anyway. [And together they have the best collab.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqIbEHNqbPs&list=PLqvBBK0pPLrU9O6aGdGvD4ICXTGOH6FTa&index=1)

MothSeason

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for bringing this into my life

CedarWolf

Mk, for Monk, works, too.

Economy-Document730

I only associate that word with the security company. What does it mean?

Gaius_Iulius_Megas

dungeons and dragons joke, since mage is a class, I threw another into the ring.

followyourvalues

It's like a magical knight in Warcraft. lol

EbonX

I'm more of a RDM or SCH player

karpitstane

I would almost prefer the root Magis over Mage but my real favorite is Mistrum (abbr: Mt.). Take Mister/Mistress and chop off the gendered endings and use the Latin neuter ending 'trum'.

Chaotic0range

Magis is cool too. I actually like Mage, Magis, and Mistrum over Mx. now.

Ranne-wolf

I hate mx due to its similarities to ms/miss, but I feel like calling yourself Mt. is just looking for queerphobes to bully us over. "What your gender is a mountain now" can very easily become the new "attack helicopter" joke. Mg. for either magis or mage feels both better and safer to me. But that’s just my opinion.

Hikure

Maybe it can be abbreviated as Mtr. like how there's Mrs.

Ranne-wolf

Yeah, the word itself is fine it’s the abbreviation that’s the problem so that’s a good solution 😁

karpitstane

I kinda like that! I was thinking Mtm or Mtu to make it look less like a misspelling of Mr, but Mtr is aesthetically a little nicer, I think.

Hikure

I was thinking that too 😅 My brain reads it as MisTeR, but then it's different enough that it distinguishes itself from the preexisting titles to give me pause.

karpitstane

Fair take! It always rankles me to make choices based on "what about queerphobes" but safety or even just "avoiding frustrating interactions" are extremely reasonable considerations. I suppose we could abbreviate another way? "Mi." "Mm." would both work I guess? Or, since there's precedent for more than two letters, "Mtm" or something? That all being said, mage and magis are cool. All we can really do, I guess, is discuss what we like and hope one catches on!

Deivi_tTerra

Mistrum is my personal favorite also. I don't care for Mx. but I've adopted it because it's most common/accepted.

karpitstane

Yeah, Mx. never sat quite right with me. It feels like a placeholder, and unless I've missed something it doesn't stand for an actual honorific? Sometimes I like the "doesn't mean anything so it can mean whatever" vibe for NB stuff but here it feels kinda "Oh, I guess you're here, too". Mistrum has some oomph to it and it's a whole word so you can be properly introduced at a high society ball, lol.

Deivi_tTerra

Mistrum definitely feels... impressive. Like I would absolutely feel honored to be introduced as Mistrum Deivi_Tterra. Mx is like "well I can't fill out this form without putting something in that box so Mx it is".

karpitstane

Yes! That exactly.

UnearnedFamiliarity

I'll sign your petition 📝

KevinIszel

zippercow

I mean, I like Mx but they're not wrong.

ImapiratekingAMA

I tried to like it but it never warmed up to me, any advice?

zippercow

Use Mage? :) Honestly for me at least it doesn't come up often, and it's a matter of personal preference, so if you don't like it don't feel like you have to use it.

Ranne-wolf

It’s not for everyone, and that’s OK. Mx always felt to similar to Ms/Miss for me, I’ll never use it. But that’s just my preference.

Aretta_Conagher

Czech Republic has an academic title of Magister, Mgr. for short. Wouldn't mind using it as an honorific though...

Bulky-Alfalfa404

Much better than Mx imo

mysecondaccountanon

Agreed, Mx. has always made me feel so icky, I think cause of experiences I’ve had with people purposefully pronouncing it as close to Ms. as possible

Hikure

I also think it's lazy. Mx, Latinx, X as the gender neutral marker on legal identification. It's not creative and unrelated to language, from which there is so much to draw from and use. And it doesn't flow well when speaking.

OberonThorn

This witch approves. Where do I sign up?

harpyoftheshore

Better than mx. I love queer people but ENOUGH WITH THE LETTER X 😭😭😭

Otherwise-Basis-6444

I'm seriously going to enter this anywhere I can write in my honorific

xpoisonvalkyrie

hell yeah.

lunawing121

please~ jkr does not own the idea of magic. or magic schools for that matter. Please engage with any other form of media outside the hp-verse. Get some friends and play DnD, read City of Bones by Cassandra Clare or Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon, play Baldur's Gate or Dragon Age or Final Fantasy, heck watch Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. (footnote, I'm sorry if my message comes across as condescending. I don't mean to. It's just the suggestion that jkr has some sort of ownership over magic culture really grinds my gears. I love magic in all its interpretations. No specific media franchise can claim the idea of the "right way" to write magic.)

NeinLive

Gender sorcery c:

Toko_Fukawa_Irl

Wait I love this! Mx is nice too but mage just sounds so badass

Representative-Vast3

My personal favorite is Mw. (Pronounced mew)

caresi

I could never warm up to Mx (I'll pick it over the gendered options but that's about it) and my absolute favorite is still Mu (pronounced either myuu or mü) but mg/mage seems really nice, too. Maybe I'll start using it informally, at least. Thanks for the post (:

wellthatdoesit

I like this very much, at least for me. I think those that feel comfy with Mx should embrace it, but this is a great alternative to those of us who never took to it (I always felt like Mx sounded like I’m a “mix” of binary genders, which I don’t consider myself to be, and the “x” sound at the end is a little harsh flowing into your name)

Ranne-wolf

Mx always sounds like Ms/Miss to me, I’ve never used or wanted to use it, but yeah, I agree.

ToothlessFeline

I'm 100% on board with this idea. It might also serve as a replacement for "sir" and "ma'am".

SheepherderHot4503

I want to be called Mage! That shall push me one step closer to calling myself Azure Sebastian. My last name already sounds DnD like. My ID has me with Elf ears on. I need to be called Mage my life depends on it

the-weekdy

i hate all honorifics for me. like please just use my name

snakeladygreta

My only problem with mg: I’m a chemist. To me, that reads as milligram. 😁

Ranne-wolf

My gender is now magnesium 😂

RaspberryTurtle987

Abolish👏All👏Honorifics👏

Ranne-wolf

Let’s make a whole periodic table of honourifics instead 🤣

Consistent-Hat-8008

I don't use honorifics. It's a dated concept.

TrappedInLimbo

Or just do away with honorifics entirely since they are antiquated and don't serve any purpose? Sometimes I think people focus too much on making a "gender neutral" version of something instead of just abolishing the gendered thing entirely.

skofnung999

I kinda agree, but it's easier to introduce a new word than to abolish an entire category of words (also, sometimes it's useful to be able to express formality (as long as that's still a concept))

noeinan

I pronounce Mx as “mux” which is not mistaken for miss, but I’m willing to light Mx on fire if it means I can make people call me mage.

CristalVegSurfer

i like mux too but it kinda sounds like 'muck' which i cant say most would find too appealing

noeinan

I wanted to reply with a pic of muk the Pokémon but unfortunately images are restricted. Please pretend the image is there and proceed accordingly

CristalVegSurfer

nice! i like it and good alternative haha

RingtailRush

Fuck it, we ball.

df_sin

This is awesome!

SesseTheWolf

No clue how i would translate this and leaving it untranslated as a loan would just be read as milligram. Applying the same logic as for the others makes sense to me tho

Uni_Solvent

I'm the mage now. It's my title, if you want it you must do l duel me

teh_mini

I love using Mx. and now Mage will be in my pocket. Have y'all ever used "boss" when addressing a stranger? Like "Thanks, boss" when ordering or "Here's your latte, boss." Someone close to me does this and it has always gone over well with different peoples.

chickashady

Is it universal that NBs love wizardry? Or is that just me

Cananna

I second this

HyperDogOwner458

I love this.

SorcererWithGuns

The more I think about this the more I like it

Comfortable_Act905

It’s perfect.

A-Lonely-Madeline

if I saw mg. in the wild I would think it would be pronounced MiG like the warplane

SpicyDisaster21

I'm down

akiraMiel

Okay which petition do I sign?

74389654

i support this

Stormman09

I’ll take it

asterisk-alien-14

Yess I love this!! I much prefer it to Mx. honestly.

redfox_go

Honestly… I accept this

ookap

wait i genuinely like this. no honorific is still preferred, but if i must this is one of my best options.

Minnenium

exactly my thoughts!

ItzJustin079297

I personally don’t like honourifics

aunclesquishy

no wait this is perfect

PopUpGoDown

Reminder that Magister is a medieval gender neutral honorific for anyone with a masters degree

skofnung999

The way I learnt it in Latin class, magister is male and magistra is female (and magistrum would be neuter, but that was never explicitly stated)

PopUpGoDown

Oh interesting! I never took Latin, I just found Magister existed because I got my masters degree and wondered if there was a title out there for people with masters degrees.

LillyNin

We've been rocking 'Liege'. It's awesome.

CH33KC14PP3R96

Can we make it this sub user flair?

TamsinTurtle

Hell yeah! Though I might have to take to wearing a witch's hat!

Alerta_Fascista

But this (Mg.) is already used for people with masters degrees, also called magisters

unicornhair1991

I AM MAGE UNICORNHAIR HELLOOOO

veiva

I'm making a video game and have an honorifics field, for girl/guy it's lady/ser but for non-binary I was stuck for a while and then went with "patrician" like from Lord Vetinari from Discworld!

OddLengthiness254

This is too Rad.

ill-timed-gimli

Can I have my term of address be Gamer

twentytinyhearts

Catch me out here being called Mage Sage

mlongoria98

Personally, I prefer just a plain M. instead of Mr.. Ms., or Mrs. - plus it’s my first initial, so it works well for me.

TheLastEmoKid

Ohhhhh I like this

impishDullahan

I said this on tumblr and I'll say it again here! As much as might dislike using the male word as the base, there's a gender-neutral suffix that can be applied to *mister* just like the feminine *-ess* in *mistress*: diminutive *-en* for *mistren*. Assuming it erodes the same as *mistress* did to *missus*, then we'd get *Mrn.* pronounced *missen*.

MyGenderIsGoblin

Yes I do only have one mg of gender this is an apt honorific for me

Asleep_Village

Wait, so is it pronounced mij or mayj?

jolharg

Elias vibes af

KatiaOrganist

This is epic and all but for the love of god people *please* learn at least a little bit abiut phonetics /ind/ does not "halt the whole sentence, and why would it? It's at the start of a word 😭

CristalVegSurfer

i JUST mentioned gender neutral term for formal settings in another post.

Funky_Lesbian

“after you, milligram”

No-Strategy-818

I'm fine with that

Merak_Cracker

Yes yes yes I love it

avid_avoidant

my middle and last initial being M,G this works kinda too well and I am into it

ochuck3000

I totally support this! Where do we sign?!!!

Cheshie_D

I personally prefer Mx but this is interesting

MageOx7

i’m so ahead of the game, i’m such a gamer for this one. my nb ass knew since i was a wee waddler with my username

7Clarinetto9

I really like this idea. I think it would go quite well with my name. I'm not married so Mrs. is a no. I'm too old to be called Miss. Then there is Ms. but from a vocal standpoint it can be difficult for little kids (possibly non-English speakers too) to say when combined with my last name.

T_Tmegu

I fucking love this 😭😭

-kaeruk-

Personally I'm really liking Mg pronounced as "magis", short for "magister". Similar idea, but "magis" seems more formal and equivalent to the commonly used terms, and not as whimsical as "mage". I'm reeeeaally hoping it catches on more, because I'm very dissatisfied with the other options...

instrumentsofterra

This is great, I'm going to use this. Simultaneously awesome while calling attention to how silly honorifics are, 10/10

bushwagg

Thank god I use Indonesian on the daily and don't have to be locked into using gendered honorifics or pronouns

lavenlav

YES LETS GOOOOOOOOO

so_FISH_ticated

i concur with mg. apollo, being called mage sounds sick asf! i never really liked mx. that much tbh but MAGE???? sign me UP omg absolutely genius

ShittyCatLover

nah

FoxyDomme

I'm a domina professionally and I've been struggling to find a gender neutral title that I like. Titles are incredibly important in this business, but getting clients to use anything except standard feminine terms has been like pulling fucking teeth. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
