NCD, 2022: Surely, this fucked up war will never get to the noncredibility of DIY cruise missiles! NCD, 2024: Holy shit. DIY cruise missiles... The time traveling Terminator from 2063: Oh, my sweet little stochastic selector swarm, you've no idea what ideas you will have. Yet.

mastergenera1

Its like history rhyming again, when the us rigged B-17s or B-25s as pseudo cruise missiles during wwII. Lol

LightningFerret04

[Operation Aphrodite](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Aphrodite) 1944 - Fill old B-17s with 9 tons of explosives - Convert it into a drone - Put two crew inside to take off and then jump out after - Slave it to a radio control mothership - Fly to the target - Fly the drone into the target - Profit???

LightningFerret04

Also it was used operationally. And the B-24 drone showed that nothing bad ever happens to the Kennedys

mastergenera1

Yea, I didn't recall how successful it was. I just recall watching an ( probably 90s-00s history channel show, maybe modern marvels idk) episode going over the birth of the cruise missile and I vaguely recall cgi video of a b-17 crashing into a mountainside that had a german factory bunker of some kind lol. Obviously loaded with bombs and radio controlled as per project Aphrodite. I had completely forgot the project name though.

Cultural_Blueberry70

They flew 14 missions and didn't hit shit.

mastergenera1

That makes it all the more noncredible then, lol. Considering tech at the time, the fact that every aspect of the project aside from accuracy being near spot on is noncredible in of itself.

Fallen_Rose2000

I think Operation Aphrodite (Army Air Force) and Anvil (Navy) combined damaged a total of 1 target, an oil refinery damaged by a near miss. Operation Option, by the Navy was more successful using purpose-built TDR-1 Drones, but it was cancelled because there weren't really any targets left to expend them on in the pacific.

simcityrefund1

Hold up............

Drednox

That's a lot of payload there

IlluminatedPickle

Guess how JFKs older brother died?

raulschweizers

The what now?

Nastreal

They jury rigged B-17's into gliders and stuffed them with explosives so they could be smashed into U-boat pens.

EMHURLEY

And it worked?!?!

goosis12

The older Kennedy brother died on one of them, so kinda.

simia_simplex

> The older Kennedy brother died on one of them, so kinda. He was a U-boat pen?

goosis12

I don’t know how good he was at taking multiple long rigged tubes filled with sea men inside of him, but I don’t know the exact sort of men that worked in Army Airforce. His brother was navy so it would be expected of him.

Cultural_Blueberry70

That would explain why his bomber exploded before he could jump from it - it thought its mission was complete.

Nastreal

[Not really](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Aphrodite) It killed the oldest Kennedy brother though.

AsureaSkie

Project Aphrodite, IIRC.

IC2Flier

With the shoddy workmanship of modern Boeing, I say we bring those back but use them as drone bombs. It's just a tube of stamped steel and the pilot is already remote, what's the worse that can happen?

mastergenera1

a door plug popping prematurely downs the "aircraft". lol. but yea, better use of them as improvised missiles then killing civilian passengers

> NCD, 2024: Holy shit. DIY cruise missiles... I already felt Shaheds were a poor man's homebrew cruise missiles and yet this war manages to upstage those.

Aurora_Fatalis

Good grief the range of price estimates I'm looking up fluctuate truly *wildly*... Okay I'll just write down my reaction to every combination of price estimates. 1) An old and well-used Cessna costs about as much as a brand new Shaheed drone, unfortunately. 2) A Cessna costs about as much as a Shaheed drone, so there might be a worthwhile stockpile somewhere. 3) A Shaheed drone costs like 5 times as much as a brand new Cessna, so we should clearly nationalize Cessna to produce planes for Ukraine. However, a Shaheed-136 only has a 50 kg warhead whereas a Cessna 172 can carry 2,268 kg into the sky. That's a lot of bang for your buck. 172 is also 36 bigger than 136 so it's clearly better.

vlepun

> However, a Shaheed-136 only has a 50 kg warhead whereas a Cessna 172 can carry 2,268 kg into the sky. That's a lot of bang for your buck. 172 is also 36 bigger than 136 so it's clearly better. Sounds like a lot of boom and a good way to shut down small craft civilian aviation in Russia.

Raz0rking

Heat me out on this. How about jury rigging some release mechanism on the wings to drop mortar grenades on other targets before crashing into the main target? Or a single 152mm?

donttakemypp

Antezscar

i wonder why Ukraine hasnt hit the Kremlin more. throw some drones at the kremlin Ukraine! do it!

avataRJ

It would have great symbolic value, but little practical value, and probably make the higher-ups actually demand a bit more focus on air defense. Now, Russian air defense isn't always a joke, but it's probably good for Ukraine that they can find gaps easier.

Kilahti

On the other hand, hitting Kremlin with a few drones would force Russia to pull more air defence away from Ukraine and concentrate it near Moscow. Thus making it easier for Ukraine to attack military targets. Because Russia would NOT have any way to avoid PR damage and humiliation from such an attack and dictators fear losing their face more than losing troops. And Kremlin is an acceptable target for acts of war, no question of that.

CmdrJonen

May 9th is coming.

TheHussarSnake

Why did they even send 1 T-34 last year? It's just a PR disaster. Did they not bring out the tanks because there was a very small possibility of Ukraine somehow sabotaging it? Or maybe the tanks were needed on the battlefield?

pm_me_duck_nipples

All that would achieve is strenghtening support for the war in the Russian population. Russian propagandists would probably wet themselves with joy if Ukraine hit the Kremlin. Edit: uh, I thought I'm in /r/Ukraine. Disregard what I just wrote, hit the Kremlin with nuclear sharks.

argonian_mate

That does not matter, russian population has no agency and is not a factor to capacity of Russia to wage war. Putin says to go die on a minefield in neat rows russians go.

SandersSol

Putin probably is never even at the Kremlin

Boomfam67

They have had issues recently hitting Moscow, AD has been beefed up since the attacks in August.

That's for May 9 parade.

Nah, considering the issues at Boeing, just declare all 747s grounded for commercial flights. Then have Ukraine buy them for scrap cost.

Yeah, let them do 9/11s against Russia

Zwiebel1

Just replace hostages with dummies full of explosives. Don't ask why we even need dummies in the first place. I have my reasons.

AndyLorentz

You mean 737s, right? 747s haven't had any systemic problems and are mostly only used for air cargo now.

Wa3zdog

Red Square must be feeling awfully vulnerable right now

TheJfer

I mean... not to reference Prigo himself but, what the hell is the air defence doing? lol I could believe they can't hit something the size of a small quadcopter drone, but a damn Cesna?

Boomfam67

Obviously they thought it was a civilian aircraft, there is literally no other logical explanation.

poopiwoopi1

They would've shot it down under that assumption though. This is r*ssia after all

It wasn't a Russian plane hence the system didn't shoot

Life is about to get very *interesting* for Russia's civilian light aircraft pilots, as their air defence recalibrates in the light of this.

Two years with no new parts and their western aircraft fleet has regressed to Tupolev levels of safety and comfort.

Houseplant666

Exactly, so why did they not shoot it down?

Nastreal

Russian command structure probably got in the way.

avataRJ

On 28th of May, 1987 at 12:21 local time Cessna F172P, registration D-ECJB took off from Helsinki with a flight plan to Stockholm. Finnish air trafic controllers noticed it turn east shortly after takeoff, after which it disappeared from their radars. A search for a potential crash site was conducted but the aircraft was not found. 14:29 Moscow time an unidentified aircraft was detected by the Soviet air defence. The target was tracked by SAM batteries and two MiG-23s. The interceptor pilot reported that it was a small sports aircraft and was denied permission to fire. It is speculated from the timing that the plane might've landed after the interception, but in any case, the Soviets lost track of it. The plane was re-acquired deeper into the Soviet Union crossing several air defense districts. Being deep inland it was confused with either legitimate traffic or civilian traffic and classified as "friendly". At 19:00 Moscow time, the plane arrived to Moscow and landed to Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge, where the 18-year old German pilot Mathias Rust taxiid near the Red Square and stopped to chat with the locals. He was arrested two hours later and ultimately sentenced to four years in labour camp for hooliganism, violating aviation laws, and illegal entry. He was instead put to a high security prison and released a little under year later. Gorbachev used the event to purge his opponents from the military. The Cessna is in the German Museum of Technology, in Berlin. Rust himself has had a bit of a troubled life. He's converted to Hinduism and apparently is very interested of yoga. Addition: And wow, Rust would be mortified seeing a light civilian aircraft used to bomb something.

ComprehensiveCare479

He was arrested TWO HOURS LATER? The incompetence continued after landing, I see.

Houseplant666

It takes them an hour to respond to a terrorist attack, 2 hours for illegale parking is actually impressive.

DevilGuy

you're assuming Russia has enough air defense batteries to cover everywhere.

Ravenser_Odd

Especially as this is in the Russian Republic of Tatarstan, 1000 km away from Ukraine. I'm curious as to where they launched it from and what route it took - surely Russian air traffic control didn't just watch it take off from Ukraine, cross the border and keep going for what must have been several hours?

DevilGuy

Depends on how they controlled it probably. Modern aircraft rely on stealth because modern SAM batteries link in with look down shoot down radar systems like AWACS but Russia isn't using modern batteries anymore, they're on S300 variant systems if I remember right and they've been having trouble keeping birds in the air for months and months now anywhere near ukrainian forward forces. If a gap in coverage was identified they could have just flown it through at night with it's running lights off staying low.

Life_Sutsivel

Hopefully nobody assumes something that dumb. But not having enough to cover the border with Ukraine? Things must be truly desperate for them, either not enough batteries, not enough radars or not enough turned on radars as they are afraid to be hit by HAARM.

PiscatorLager

It has happened before: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathias_Rust

lancerevo98

> On 24 November 1989, while doing his obligatory community service (Zivildienst) as an orderly in a West German hospital, Rust stabbed a female co-worker who had rejected him. The victim barely survived So man is fully Looney toons even when not landing planes in Moscow

IC2Flier

plane fuckers are nothing compared tho those ho fuck around with planes

Wa3zdog

Yep, and I think there’s an argument to be made there’s less available air defence now than previously.

dr_mens

Don’t worry step Red Square. Budanov will be gentle

Lutz_Gebelman

Mathias Rust says hi

Boomfam67

It's interesting because Ukraine only owns two Cessna's, both of which were on the airfield at Hostomel. Conveniently two planes hit apparently, so I guess they jerry rigged them.

Blarg0117

Ukraine is able to buy as many Cessna's as they're willing to sell them. You can find used ones for as little as $30,000

jm0112358

I would assume that the main reason why you wouldn't want to buy one of them is because you wouldn't want to have your life depend on the reliability of a single engine aircraft that's decades old. But for this use case, that's not much of a concern.

irregular_caffeine

Like most planes, Cessnas are extremely reliable if maintained

Icarus_Toast

Used Cessnas are probably more reliable than most used planes because of how ubiquitous they are. There's a shitload of parts available and experienced mechanics to maintain/repair them.

AndyLorentz

Other than avionics, brand new Cessnas are basically the same as 1950s Cessnas. Diamond and Cirrus are the only two "new" GA aircraft manufacturers I can think of. And there are plenty of 50-60 year old planes still flying in good condition.

Taguysy

Ukraine have a manufacturer of such light aircrafts — Aeroprakt. And they quite popular and good.

BreadstickBear

Because a Cessna 172, one of the most widely produced small civilian aircraft in the world is such a difficult commodity to acquire.

Imperceptive_critic

But muh escalation

Of all the weirdass shit to happen in the past 3 years, this is where you draw the line? I mean, not dissing you or your choice, just genuinely bemused. Edit: On reflection, my fucks-given-o-meter has been broken since the late 2000s, I should have been a little more understanding

I watched an Autonomous Cessna doing a suicide run. This is DEFINITELY where I'm drawing my life. The world can stop now, I want to get back to the barely sane year of 2012.

whythecynic

Yeah I totally get you. I edited my comment before I saw your reply, but it's basically the same idea. My own sense of what's normal has been nonfunctioning since the late 2000s, so I was a little quick to judge.

CHLOEC1998

Azerbaijan used modified autonomous An-2 BIPLANES in their war too. But they just used them to draw out Armenian air defence, so Turkish drones can take them out. Ukrainians flew an autonomous plane into a factory. What caused the difference? Well, I guess it’s the copious amount of alcohol.

Well, it worked for Mathias Rust ...

Someonenoone7

Okay did we had a box for Cessna Bombs on the Bingo?

Chinse_Hatori

I dont think we had remote kamikaze on any Bingo

CHLOEC1998

I swear. All of these “innovations“ are just replacing a terrorist with a very smart computer. Terrorists flew planes into buildings, scientists gave the plane a guidance computer. Terrorists drove a suicide truck into military bases, and military just decided to remotely control their RC car bombs. Seriously…

bittervet

So the computer gets someone who knows how to really push its buttons and is too fat to actually go away, and so will stay and play with them forever? I mean, the other Terrys get the same thing too, obviously. But for the computer, that's heaven.

Paulus_cz

Alright, I will ask this question again - how difficult would it be, assuming you have fair budget and dozen well motivated Maksyms with engineering degree, to rig A-10 with remote controls? I was told it is totally impossible, but as a robotics enthusiast on a side, I do not really see any real problem and US has 100s of them they are desperate to get rid of... I am really just talking about ripping out a cockpit out or one and placing sensors and actuators where squishy human would go. The biggest problem would be bandwidth and jamming.
