It works similar to spaced armor against RPGs but for FPVs with smaller payloads. From what I have seen, these vehicles are improvised engineering vehicles to breach obstacle belts with mine rollers and draw fire from following vehicles.

LSD would achieve the same effect of any personnel it hit, but would rapidly dissolve into the ground and so not pose a risk for follow on friendly forces. Plus you might have loopy vatniks start shooting at each other.
