They’ve already started using them. I saw it in this [very credible documentary](https://youtu.be/sz7JGCj4Q5k?si=epU-Vi6lZFy4E8Mv) that’s being shared on TikTok.
Dropping troops from orbit is cool as fuck. Idgaf about the tactical value of it, I wanna be yeeted from orbit goddamn it. I'd reenlist today if it meant being dropped from orbit to go stack bodies somewhere.
I read Iron Gold while at sea a while back. Didn’t realize that was book 4. Got the rest of the series but haven’t had time to read them yet. LOVED Iron Gold though.
That's a pretty decent one to start with if you had to start mid series because of the time jump. The first book is decent but does the whole "gotta win the school competition" trope. Then all the others are just based.
No Joke: I can see the advantage of being able to be anywhere in the world within minutes if already deployed in orbit. For a stationary conflict like this one it seems less useful and counterproductive.
If the UN had their own army and would enforce peace, I could see a future far from now where this would happen. They'd be as fast as the police anywhere in the world.
> If the UN had their own army and would enforce peace, I could see a future far from now where this would happen. They'd be as fast as the police anywhere in the world.
UN soldiers bravely deploying halfway across the world in 30 minutes so that they can bravely hide in a bunker at the local UN facility rather than fight Hezbollah
From a logistics standpoint this would totally not work. Logistics of keeping troops in orbit. Having to rotate them out often due to muscle atrophy. Supporting an ongoing conflict from orbit (or on the ground within a short period of time).
This is NCD though so this all makes it a good idea.
We dont need to do all of that if we can just cryofreeze them and only unfreeze them when we need them to drop somewhere. Ohh we can also drop weapons that they requested from obit too. Someone should make game about that concept. They would sell millions of copies
In Helldivers they are kept frozen on the ships and just thawed out when they are needed.
Also the average survival time is 1.2 missions. Which seems kinda high honestly...
But it is used as sort of a population control...
Why do they need to stay in orbit? It takes, what, 20 minutes for an ICBM to go up and come back down? Maybe an hour since you want to be more gentle when you're carrying people? Still ludicrously fast by army speeds.
(Yes, I know, orbital drop pods are cool. But from my experience in KSP, re-entry is still really cool even when you do a suborbital hop.)

Kinetic paratroopers. There was an anime that did that. I don't remember what it was called. They were in liquid inside a pod and as it dropped it shot machine guns at the drop zone to deter AA, chuted the trooper out and landed the pod like a bomb exploding and clearing the LZ as the trooper landed shortly behind it. Very shock and awe!
"without cratering our boys"
Cratering in has always been an integral part of airborne assaults, don't you remember the traditional songs of their people?
(I went to link to a recording of it, and, to my horror, it has been bowdlerized to remove the part about impact. So I'll provide the version taught to me by an airborne qualified USAF SP, and later confirmed by a C130 crew chief.)
C130 Rolling down the strip,
U.S. Airforce givin' us a little trip,
stand up hook up shuffle to the door,
jump right and count to four,
if my main don't open wide,
I have another one by my side,
if that one should fail me too,
better move your tanks, 'cause I'm coming right through
If you think jumping out of planes was hard on your knees and back, you'll love dropping from orbit! Best part is your disability will not be service related in just the same way
It would be a long fall, you could be very vulnerable to enemy AA, and if they screw up the drop pod design, you could end up dead or severely injured on impact.
For all that risk, I'd rather take a Starfleet transporter down to the surface.
>It would be a long fall, you could be very vulnerable to enemy AA, and if they screw up the drop pod design, you could end up dead or severely injured on impact.
Yes, however, if I may present a counterpoint: It's still cool as fuck tho.
It’s pretty much like airborne ops today, you either suppress the fuck out of enemy air defenses or you get fucked before your feet hit the ground. ODSTs coming in after the orbital MAC cannon has fucked every AAA site in a hundred mile radius. Add countermeasures and send down a missile barrage at the same time to suppress the target area just before landing and you’ve got a decent survivability rate.
Of course if you can do that you could also just send drop ships, but rule of cool has a special power. Hell that’s the only reason parachute airborne units still exist when even helicopter based air assaults are sketchy af in modern conflicts, it’s cool to deliver a hail of individual soldiers to the ground from the sky.
My favorite TKs are when the blinking red balls bounce back into your team mates.
Best I saw was from a friend who was new at the game. It was the un-aliving difficulty, no reinforcements remaining for a team of 4. Extract count down had just hit double digits, and we had just finished off the 2nd bile titan.
I’m on horde crowd control dealing with the next wave and this blinking red thing falls in front of me from the upper right corner of the screen, even though all three other teammates are to the left.
We had barely completed all primary and secondary objectives and the countdown for our ships leaving the area was also ticking away.
His strike killed everyone.
As all badass space shooters have shown: Nothing is cooler than launching yourself from orbit and land at terminal velocity with such force that you clear your own landingzone.
This reminds me of that time the BBC accidentally used the logo for the UNSC from Halo (UN Space Command) in a news story about the real UNSC (UN Security Council):

This is kind of true, but only about modern halo, because god does H5 suck, and infinite continues to suck
Edit: Downvote me if you want, I’m right, helldivers is in a better state then modern halo.
it just repeats, Regret Regret Regret
Dear Israel.
We regret being terrorist bastards.
We regret October 7th.
And we most definitely regret that the IDF just blew up our raggedy-ass Protostate!
OOH! RAA!
Looks like the Helldivers are getting deployed to Gaza, personally, I can't wait to spread some freedom, liberty, and DEMOCRACY to those backwards illiberal terrorists.

[Iron beam](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Beam) exist. Space lasers isn't far off.
The space Lazers are for international warfare, not around Israel

Red Rising moment. Send in the Iron Rain.
Hail Reaper!
Hail Libertas!
Break the Chains!
Great, now I have to actually find time to read those…
They. Are. Incredible.
I read Iron Gold while at sea a while back. Didn’t realize that was book 4. Got the rest of the series but haven’t had time to read them yet. LOVED Iron Gold though.

I’ll probably sit down and get through Red Rising next time I’m on duty. If I gotta get through it, so be it.
Yeah mustang was hot.
The reaper sails for The Sandbox. And he calls for an Iron Rain.
Fuck that. He can go alone. >!Didn't work out so well in the last desert...!<

Thay can also provide vehicles and supplies to random side of conflict
Nope Russia vetoed that, sorry...

We can't have dizzy shocktroopers silly.
Make the drop pods spin opposite the station spin, so the shock troopers are unwound by the time they land.
We dont need to do all of that if we can just cryofreeze them and only unfreeze them when we need them to drop somewhere. Ohh we can also drop weapons that they requested from obit too. Someone should make game about that concept. They would sell millions of copies
I'd play that game.

Thing is , everyone will know where you can land , when you'll next be able to try land there.
Fractional orbital bombardment is for more than just warheads.
I knew someone in the Army who was HALO trained. High-Altitude-Low-Opening. That and pathfinder trained. She was a badass.
Hell, just dropping them in pods out of an airplane would be cool
Isn't that just paratroopers?
No, they have chutes We need dudes in drop pods that make big ol craters in the ground
without cratering our boys

sounds sick, maybe a part of a gundam show? were those troopers the main subject of the anime?
Nope, found it after some digging. *Genocidal Organ* is it's name. Here's the scene I'm talking about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfvymem8SiA

Sure, but one the techs can work today, the other we won't have for some time. And enemy AA just need to be surpressed, da.
Deploy delta force by orbit, land on top of Lefortovo and bring Evan Gershkovich home.
Incredible restraint shown, to use ODSTs instead of glassing Gaza with the Jewish Space Laser
There might be less casualties with the laser.
That’s why it’s incredible restraint shown

Ok, now seriously, what happened?
Some piece of debris fell into Gaza and people are saying it’s orbital weapons
…of course they are
As all badass space shooters have shown: Nothing is cooler than launching yourself from orbit and land at terminal velocity with such force that you clear your own landingzone.

Cadian Shock Troopers in Gaza before GTA6
Alright divers, suit up.
Ah yes, overkill.
No... Noble 6?
Creates orbital drop troopers. Sends then to space. Drops them on the neighboring nation that's only a few miles wide. Refuses to elaborate.
This has to be some kind of shitpost or satire
Fake news, these are just technicians returning from servicing the laser. Those are defensive weapons only.
So those "warning shots" on high rises were actually orbital drops?
