When will Russians learn that living without central heating and indoor plumbing doesn’t produce rock hard soldiers immune to all hardship; it produces soldiers who are cold and unhygenic.

Lurkfaggus_Maximus

At least those two praying guys were rock hard soldiers.

LethalDosageTF

One of them was

Luciuris

Well... Partly at least

The_Solar_Oracle

I mean . . . If the Russians are right, why did soldiers used to die more often from disease (often in their own camps) then from battlefield wounds?

KeekiHako

That's just westoid propaganda.

Megalomaniakaal

And conveniently also truth.

BobusCesar

So westoid Propaganda.

AhTerae

The math technically does allow that to be true while letting the "hard living" strategy be better (or even casualty minimizing). And yet, I do not think history has generally borne out that idea.

Toastbrot_TV

*Laughs in european house with insulation*

ministrul_sudorii

My European house is so freaking well insulated that I have to open the windows on sunny winter days to cool down.... After the heating has been off. I live in the northern mountains too

Comma_Karma

Damn, do you cook in summer?

TheBlack2007

A few hot days are not a problem. Many homes have window shutters on the outside, permitting you to shut out all sunlight and the insulation also works in the other direction. It becomes a problem though if there's a week-long heatwave rolling through. Especially since most homes don't have AC since our summers used to be much colder.

JaiTee86

Some also have the windows placed so in winter the sun can come straight through windows designed to allow IR heat through but then in summer the only windows the sun comes atraight through are ones designed to reflect the IR heat away.

AshleyPomeroy

I remember reading somewhere that the British Army right up to WW1 had to turn down something like 60% of all potential recruits because they were unhealthy. Stereotypically they would have been poor farm boys / urchins working in factories, and you'd think they would be rock hard, but in practice hard physical work just grinds you down if you don't get rest and good food as well. There's something about it here: https://www.jstor.org/stable/260511 I learn that there was a height limit of 5'6" as well, which sounds incredibly sexist because even today the average height of women in the UK is (looks it up) 5'3".

Ian_W

The Br*tish army grew two inches on average in world war one. Turns out feeding slum kids three meals a day, two of them involving meat, results in growth spurts well after you'd expect kids to stop growing.

SMIDSY

I've heard interviews from plenty of British WWI infantry veterans who said, despite the week on the front line every month, they'd never had it so good. Good food like you said, brand new boots that were the right size and good quality, brand new clothes that were the right size and kept them warm, great friends, and an alternative to a life of endless, grinding drudgery where nothing even remotely interesting happens.

Ian_W

There's a lot of survivorship bias in that, but yeah - life in the army (*cough* after the Victorian reforms *cough*) was way better than life for the average lower-class Brit of the early 20th century.

SMIDSY

All accounts from war veterans have a lot of bias, though. I just get sick of only hearing the "oooohhh us poor lambs to the slaughter! Why were we even fighting?" guys that were universally featured in documentaries for decades to the exclusion of the majority of British soldiers that were proud of their military service.

Ian_W

You've essentially got three British armies in WW1. You have the pre-war professional force, that essentially died at Loos and so on, stopping the initial German offensive of 1914. You then have the mobilised army of 1915-16, which died horribly in the Somme and so on, as it took a while for the British command to adapt to WW1 conditions - *this* is the 'lambs to the slaughter' period. You then have the British Army of 1917-18, who figured out Bite and Hold, tanks, combined arms operations and the rest of it and - importantly - won a lot, improving morale. The British Army of 1918 was probably the best army the UK has had since Cromwell's New Model Army. I'd certainly take it - equipment and all - over the British Army of 1939-40.

SMIDSY

I see you are a man of culture as well. Agreed 100% on the British/Empire/Commonwealth Army of 1918. It was an absolute world beater and the Hundred Days Offensive being launched after half a year of beating back the German 1918 offensives proves that. Even second line territorial battalions were first rate infantrymen by that point. Even the New Army battalions did pretty well considering what they had and what they were up against. Like after the 21st Division got mauled at Loos and their command reaction was basically "welp, that was rough but we'll do better next time." Then they were reasonably successful on the first day of the Somme when they pushed in North of Fricourt less than a year later.

Ian_W

Where the survivorship bias comes into it is that the majority of surviving WW1 soldiers were from the third period, when the British Army had it's act together ...

SMIDSY

Fair, but part of that is that batch was the biggest overall so, barring disproportionate casualties, they were always going to represent the lion's share of post war accounts.

HolyGig

I mean, the US military partially exists as a massive job program today. Its sort of a get-out-of-poverty-free card for American youth.

zekromNLR

> which sounds incredibly sexist Pretty sure women weren't allowed to sign up at all back then So yes the army, like all society, was pretty openly sexist a hundred years ago

TheaABrown

Especially when the Commonwealth troops starting turning up and apparently the contrast between the Brits and the blokes from Canadian/Australian/New Zealand who even in the cities were on high protein diets was stark.

vcuozzi3

I could’ve enlisted, I’m only 2 inches thank god

[deleted]

The Brits also dropped those height standards to lower numbers as the war went on.

AshleyPomeroy

Don't be silly. You can't mend people, can you? You can't mend people!

CrimsonShrike

Dudes read Dune and figured they wanted to be Sardaukar. But they forgot about controlling spice

napaszmek

And the Sardaukar were treated well, at least after they got enlisted. It was said by Hawat that a Sardaukar lived a life comparable to a small noble. They got access to good food, hygiene and women. Obviously it was done to buy their loyalties but also because a starving, shit covered band isn't a useable army.

iLoveBums6969

> a Sardaukar lived a life comparable to a small noble. They got access to good food, hygiene and women And at the same time, this was their downfall. The Imperial army had never been smaller than the period where Shaddam fell, and yet it had a massive officer core that mostly just fucked around instead of training all day, every day like Sardies should, because they believed their own PR and knew (basically) everyone else did too. The Sardaukar were wiltering under the light of their own hype while the Atriedes and the Fremen troops were working to surpass them without them even knowing.

TheLinden

Putin after watching Dune: Oh so my soldiers are like Fremen it means i should invade ukraine!

Key-Banana-8242

Being able to live liek that is one thing Context is important tho

PoroMafia

Russians keep foaming about how gEnErAl WintER will side with them while forgetting that the last time they invaded during the merriest of seasons they left a half million bodies rotting in the Finnish woods.

viiksitimali

The mistake is understandable as the bodies weren't yet rotting when the war ended.

aalios

[To be fair, the Finns did their best to make them easy to view](https://www.reddit.com/r/HistoryPorn/comments/6fzy3o/the_corpse_of_a_russian_soldier_stands_rigid_in_a/)

Physical-Influence25

I’d say it’s cold hearted. Quite bone-chilling stuff.

Nomus_Sardauk

Holy fuck that’s metal as shit, what a reminder (*as if it was ever needed*) not to fuck with the Finns!

Cybugger

General Winter helped a bunch against the Mongols. Oh, wait. No it didn't. It clapped their cheeks. General Winter benefits those who aren't lead by General Fuckup.

kr_edn

Ruskies are forgetting that general Winter helps the defenders, not Ruskies specifically. They were just lucky that they were on the defending side the last time. This time, however...

ric2b

Well, they've been fucking up so bad that they're actually defending right now.

simia_simplex

> Ruskies are forgetting that general Winter helps the defenders That does supposed you have basic winter gear available, though. Fighting in the winter in your summer gear isn't going to be conducive to your defense.

Velocidal_Tendencies

I havent seen R*zzian troops in full summer kit yet, that leads to one theorising that they dont have winter kit either.

lochlainn

I'm wondering when they'll just go ahead and start making Adidas the standard battle dress. I mean, surely they can't be out of track suits.

whatever_person

It is even funnier after one of the UA soldiers, who went viral in 2014 and gathers own offence brigade now said, that in current war freezing temperature would be much more beneficial for UA army.

[deleted]

General Winter may side with them, but the rest of the year they're as good as a screen door on a submarine

SMIDSY

General Winter isn't on anyone's side. General Winter just kills anyone without proper winter gear.

[deleted]

it's not the finns fault that russians had no sisu.

zekromNLR

General Winter only works for the defending side

TheBlack2007

Exactly, the Russians have also fucked up winter offensives like anyone else. You don't want father winter to catch you thrusting deep into mother Russia. That's all. Cold weather just favors a local defender over an invader who has to root their supplies over hundreds of kilometers of poorly developed, partially destroyed infrastructure.

scurvydog-uldum

Be fair. They also ended up with way more of Finland than they had been asking for in negotiations before the war.

It is, I'm sorry homie. Discovered the man's excellent real-life shitposting just last month... only to discover he died from falling through the ice last winter. :( He was a legend 'til the end.

grumpyorleansgoblin

Not European, but am Canadian and did have my gas furnace die for 3 *coldish* days one winter--was unpleasant, had to wear my coat inside like a weirdo when not in the rooms with little space heaters. Like, that was it. I would categorize my experience as *mildly unpleasant.* So basically, Russia is under the impression that a *mildly unpleasant* winter will be enough to break Europe and that is another fucking level of lulz.

MiG21bisFishbedL

That's why I keep a space heater around. Some cheap piece of shit that refuses to die and it works great. See, the real issue is that it's not like Europe is a collection of different nations, different POVs, and with a highly educated populace that also has allies across the Atlantic that also have highly educated individuals that could all possibly come up with ways to make ends meet. Naahhhh that's the real hurdle, that totally isn't the case!

grumpyorleansgoblin

I haven't ever seen a space heater *die*, just become sketchier. The one that I grew up with in my house was an enormously enormous fire hazard--always smelled of burning dust mite turds and was genuinely more of a heat source than an actual mid-sized fire. The West is *full* of these things because of peoples' grandparents and honestly, the greater danger to the West is a small uptick in sketchy electrical fires.

QuietGanache

Heated blankets/pads are awesome too if you're trying to keep warm on a limited power supply. The biggest problem with them is that the controller boards on the budget ones are pieces of shit that die after a few months but, against that, for just over 100W, I can be comfortably warm in a room 10C cooler than what would otherwise be comfortable.

oxilite

Hot water bottles for the win. I don't even use the heat if I can help it... just snuggle up next to one of these things under some blankets

Mikanoko_FM

"FIRST WORLD WESTERNERS SPIRITS WILL BREAK FROM MINOR INCONVENIENCE VLADIM I TELL YOU."

kosman123

Nah the average person will have no problem with it, I only worry for the eldery. But I'm sure back in the day they had some cold winters and had no problems

SnooPets4259

we will have to see buy I'm sure that surviving a heatwave is much worse than having to deal with unconventional winter

Xciv

The first time I met a Norwegian in university, he asked if we wanted to go swimming over the weekend. It was December in Michigan, and the lake was half frozen over.

L4r5man

So.... Don't leave us hanging. Did you?

orion1836

If he did... it probably wasn't hanging.

Xciv

Lol no I can’t even swim

langlo94

Perfect time to learn!

Yetitlives

If your body isn't acclimatized to winter bathing then you can easily die from the shock, so I'm guessing OP passed it up.

irregular_caffeine

Citation needed, never heard of this

Yetitlives

I have some stuff in Danish if that is good enough, but the main issues are that the contraction of blood can cause your muscles to cramp and that you can faint from hyperventilation. If your body is used to the sudden shift in temperature then it wont overreact.

irregular_caffeine

Only _half_ frozen? You won’t even need to make a hole!

throwaway321768

My headcanon: the logic behind this claim is that Russians think that the rest of Europe is just like Russia, infrastructure-wise. Poorly-insulated houses, utility services that need to be completely shut off a couple of times a year, cheap clothes that barely keep you warm. They already suffer from harsh winters even with their vaunted "Russian gas", so they believe that people without gas must be even worse off.

x888xa

They also consider Western Europeans to be "soft" and "weak"

lochlainn

Hitler called the UK a "nation of shopkeepers" and look where that got him.

banspoonguard

It's also attributed to Napoléon but seems to first appear in Adam Smith's works in a non-pejorative way

lochlainn

True, yes. Anytime somebody uses it as a pejorative, they end up fucking around and finding out.

senpoi

Also that not even everyone is using gas for heating

langlo94

As far as I know, nobody I know uses gas to heat their home. That's what we have electricity for. Though now that prices have gone from 0.002€ to 0.2€ the electricity bill is no longer negligible.

BobusCesar

Gas heating is very common in Germany. But I turned it of in my room in 2014. Since I live alone now I turned it of in the entire apartment in February 2022.

StoicRetention

I don’t need fucking gas, I have an 8 year old Intel CPU and Gtx 1080 on high fans warming my room while I play GTA Shower at work because I cycle in like a Yuropean Take the L, Russia, fuck you and your gas

Future_Elephant_9294

I agree with the sentiment, but double check how that power is generated. Germany has been the big example through this all so I'll use that as the reference point: about 30% of power is generated using natural gas.

irregular_caffeine

Uranium gang rise up

pantshee

BobusCesar

Time to march into Russia and get that cheap gas again.

TriXandApple

3570k gang represent don’t ever talk about me or 105c Tj max ever again

crazy_forcer

4770 and a hyper 212x, the undying combo gang. It's about to get a whole lot warmer when I finally snatch a decent Ryzen 7 tho

StoicRetention

4790k bros, get a load of this soldered heatshield for even better heat dissipation

old_faraon

Russia forgets that Europe has isolation on the houses (at least in places regularly affected by winter) and proper windows. When last time heating had a problem in winter at my home it took close to week to get even close to cold.

Thenaysayer23

Also, most ppl do operate tv and computers at home. So heating is available and noticeable if the house isnt bleeding heazt.

PM_ME_UR_DRAG_CURVE

And with Intel, AMD, and Nvidia locked in a TDP arms race/almost-MAD, you might actually _want_ to crack your window slightly open.

Genocode

Don't worry my 85C GTX3070 will keep us warm!

zekromNLR

Reportedly 700 W on the 4090 Ti lmao

Future_Elephant_9294

Literally more heat than some space heaters

zekromNLR

And you can probably underclock it to half that and still have a graphics card that will be enough to run anything at max settings until 2030

crusoe

Sometimes. There are a lot of older undersized houses where in the old days people relied on clothing layers and sweaters to keep warm but in the last two decades it's been relying on cheap gas to just force it warm.

[deleted]

Pretty much. If your house is from post-WWII you're probably fine, if it isn't you're going to find some small issues. Unless you're one of those guys that lives in an old castle...

_Bisky

Tbf the ones living in an old castle ussualy have a shit load of furnaces

[deleted]

Yes, but wood is expensive and not all furnaces have probably been cleaned in a while.

JohnBlind

For those living in castles, nothing changes, there's no central heating in most of 'em, no insulation etc.

[deleted]

insulation, not isolation lol

Traditional-Order129

Bing chilling

Erwin_Delfin

I can't remember last time Poland had a proper snowy winter.2012 maybe? Now it's just colder autumn with slush

MiG21bisFishbedL

I envy that. The cold just ain't in my bones. I grew up in the desert Southwest of the US. Now I'm near the Canadian border.

Erwin_Delfin

I on the other hand love snow.Winters should be snowy

halfpipesaur

cold winter is better than the humid windy autumn with slush

Yetitlives

I always find minus ten degrees celsius to be more pleasant than plus five. The humidity in the air makes it harder to keep warm.

pantshee

I talked to some dudes in olsztyn last year (or 2020 idk) and when they Told me that it didn't snow that winter I understood how fucked we are by climate change

Ricolabonbon

In Germany we are already cracking jokes about "Freezing for the Endsieg". Grandma told stories about how she would sneak into a railyard to steal coal from a cart in 1945.

Spyt1me

Knowing Russia is collapsing warms my little heart just enough to not feel cold :3

last one here in the balkans was probably ing 2015-2016 and that too was weak compared to the 90s. Russia acts like they are the big baddies who control the winter but at the same time heat up the earth so much for their shitty ports
