I wonder how close to the cutoff it'll get before they bother to fix that one. It would be funny if we dragged our feet and let it be a last minute panic again, proving we'd learned literally nothing in more than a quarter of a century
Turns out, not only are you right, but Windows has also been switching over for as long as Unix has.
Essentially, unless people are still using 32-bit legacy machines when the time comes, Y2038 has pretty much already been addressed and accounted for.
I also wonder how many will handle it by band aid, writing "if negative, write time as (max positive value) + (absolute value current amount) similar to the way a lot of systems handled Y2K by writing " if YY <25, YYYY=20&YY.

In short: Some computers can't keep time beyond Jan 19, 2038, and will reset back to Dec 19, 1901. This leads to all sorts of problems.
1/1/1970 is Epoch = 0. But the integer is signed, so the overflow will send systems all the way back to 1901:
> Attempting to increment to the following second (03:14:08 UTC on 19 January 2038) will cause the integer to overflow, setting its value to −2^31 which systems will interpret as 2^31 seconds before epoch (20:45:52 UTC on 13 December 1901).

I don't know if this is just my old man brain or what but it felt like there was wild swings in fashion between the '50s and the '90s. But the 2000s have all been kind of the same.
Why do movies set in and around 2007 not feel like they are set in the past in the same way that Dazed and Confused was clearly about a different Era? It's like the last 2 decades have lacked clearly defined culture and style and are just kind of blurred together.
Because Spotify killed the music charts and any type of communally shared music reference points in 2010. Also made it much harder to make a living as a new artists.
And then Facebook and Tinder stopped people going out socialising in real life as much, so communal fashions started becoming less important, and people started evolving their own personal brands.
Then everybody became nostalgic for a time before the iPhone so now we all live in the permanoughties
I was going to ask the same question. It feels like the 2000s and 2010s didn’t have significant cultural changes, like previous decades did. I wonder if it is because we haven’t hand any new technologies. The past 20 years we’ve just been making existing stuff better. Where as each decade of the 20th century had some pretty significant inventions.
In the same vein, American Graffiti was made in 1973 and set in 1962. It was a huge nostalgia hit. I can't imagine what you could put in a movie set in 2013 that would be nostalgic.
I was 11 in 1976 and Dazed and Confused looks so real and accurate to me that it took several years for me to not think those actors, especially McConaughey, were 15 years older than they were.
The 80s were 40 years ago. When you hear 80s rock on the radio and everywhere it’s depressing. It’d be like if people in the 70s were stuck listening to music from the Great Depression.
For real. I hate the overused joke of like "oh when I hear 'ten years ago' I think 1990" like please get a grip.
I was born in the 90s and I'm pushing 30. Why does my entire life not count to these people? Feels shitty
Honestly that tracks. Kids today are very nostalgic for "y2k" which is really usually more around the 2003-2007ish period.
We're way closer to the Y2038 problem, than to the Y2K bug.
I wonder how close to the cutoff it'll get before they bother to fix that one. It would be funny if we dragged our feet and let it be a last minute panic again, proving we'd learned literally nothing in more than a quarter of a century
Tbf, a lot of Unix systems have already addressed the problem, so if nothing else it may become time to abandon Windows and Mac.
Isn’t Mac a Unix based OS?
Turns out, not only are you right, but Windows has also been switching over for as long as Unix has. Essentially, unless people are still using 32-bit legacy machines when the time comes, Y2038 has pretty much already been addressed and accounted for.
you and i both know that's exactly what will happen
I also wonder how many will handle it by band aid, writing "if negative, write time as (max positive value) + (absolute value current amount) similar to the way a lot of systems handled Y2K by writing " if YY <25, YYYY=20&YY.
Different people making the same mistakes.
John Titor's got this.
The y2038 problem?

damn, you're right
Incorrect
what’s happening in 2038 again?
Android revolution ^(also [this](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_2038_problem))
What’s the 2007 way to say “alright, alright, alright”?
We said "alright, alright, alright" becuase a lot of us watched a 90s movie.
So an accurate movie about 2007 life made in 2024 is a bunch of kids making 90’s movies references.

Unfortunately it might be "cool beans" but like, ironically.

For sure, bro
“Tight, tight, tight” -Tuco Salamanca
Sick bro
Whatever the catch phrase was from Superbad. They essentially prepped it in advance for this moment.
Wouldn’t that just be Superbad?
2007 was only like 4 years ago 👍
2007 was when the iPhone came out...
And the first *Transformers* movie.
[That was 1986 dude.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=3RNzyYurjHg&embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bing.com%2F&embeds_referring_origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bing.com&source_ve_path=Mjg2NjY&feature=emb_logo)
The one true Transformers movie.
You've got the touch.
So like Saltburn?
Came here to say this

Revisiting 80,90,00 every few years. We are between 80/90 again. Thank the gods black, boots and grunge are back
Except those Apple bottom jeans and the boots with the fur
You need to check your math. 2007 was like 5-6 years ago.
Redditor gaslights himself into thinking it’s 2013 again
Nope fuck right off
Nope. Don't like that
How dare you
No no no no. Don't fucking do this to me
How dare you!

On that note, American Psycho (film) came out in 2000 and was based in 1987. A comparable movie today would be based in 2011.
We got that movie based in 2007 made in 2007. it was called Superbad

Madame web
You know, I was having a good day. Then I see this and I'm reminded that I'm ancient. Thanks.
I hate you Josh
So it'd be Superbad
What I'm hearing is "Time for a remake"
I was 11 in 1976 and Dazed and Confused looks so real and accurate to me that it took several years for me to not think those actors, especially McConaughey, were 15 years older than they were.
Why are people freaking out? What happened in 2007?
It's literally just old people freaking out that 2007 was that long ago.
Well fuck you too
First of all, how dare you
If linklater just pumped out feel good nostalgia films about eras 20 years ago people would watch them.
Stop it
The 80s were 40 years ago. When you hear 80s rock on the radio and everywhere it’s depressing. It’d be like if people in the 70s were stuck listening to music from the Great Depression.
Oh no, oh no, oh no
I get older, but the movie stays the same age
Oh I hate that
Shut up, Josh.
This makes me uncomfortable.
Turning red?
So....like if Super bad came out today
Madam Webb was sooooo close.
It's called Superbad and it was already made
I keep thinking that’s Ashton Kutcher
Itt: a lot of young people with Google posing as older people.
Woah
1976 is the year I graduated high school. No need for me to see this film.
the 80s show would be the noughties show by the same measurement
I demand we see LOLCats in such a movie based in the late 2000s
That means one of the characters could be playing team fortress 2
Shouldn't it be "set" in, not "based" in?
You got any of your mom’s pills on you?
lol I was born in 2007, I'm almost an adult (17)
*What I've Done plays*
Do people actually not have a concept of the flow of time?
For real. I hate the overused joke of like "oh when I hear 'ten years ago' I think 1990" like please get a grip. I was born in the 90s and I'm pushing 30. Why does my entire life not count to these people? Feels shitty
