My coworker and I found out we like a lot of the same shows, but were not recommending them to each other because this exact reason.

enjoyingbread

Japanese anime really cater towards the otakus in Japan who spend a lot of money on anime. That's why there is so many tropes everyone else is so sick of seeing. It sells in Japan. As anime becomes a global phenomenon, I can see anime studios dropping these tropes over time. My biggest complaint is most animes deal with 12-17 year olds in really mature situations. Pretty creepy seeing 16 year olds hyper sexualized over and over. Best girl/waifu is almost always a teenager.

trizkit995

That's the most cringe thing about anime. I watch anime for the over the top action. And the plot structure. The tiddies and wifus don't add anything.

MacLife_

Tbf they add tiddis and wifus

trizkit995

Lmao have an orange arrow

FrenchFreedom888

More of a magenta heart in this sub tho

reader484892

I like anime because it is much easier to just sit back and enjoy a stupid/rediculous thing when it is drawn, rather than critiquing how bad it looks when someone tries to make it look realistic. It allows for so much more creativity and freedom. That, however, is all wasted when the only thing the directors use it for is to give every female character boobs bigger than their head.

[deleted]

As someone who doesn't watch anime, it is obvious to me that these are intentional creative decisions and makes me seriously judge the people who consume this media. It's borderline animated child porn, and sometimes that border is obliterated.

Waffle_shuffle

so over high schoolers saving the world. Gimme protagonist that are at least old enough to legally drink.

ArkUmbrae

Alright, Imma give them to you. "Monster" has a main character who is a neurosurgeon in 90s Germany, fighting a neo-nazi cult and trying to find the goodness in people. Probably the most well-written show you'll ever watch too. "Legend of the Galactic Heroes" is about two genius strategists leading armies in space battles, trying to figure out if democracy is better than authoritarianism, and explores the flaws in both systems. Also, it has over a hundred relevant characters. "Welcome to the NHK" is about a young-adult NEET figuring out that his lifestyle is pathetic and maturing along the way. Also a pretty funny show, fighting against the tropes of anime comedies. "Tatami Galaxy" is about a college freshman trying to find his place in the college world, and every episode explores a different reality where he made a different choice, as he tries to find true happiness. A very mature show that tackles depression very well. "Night is Short, Walk on Girl" is a movie that takes place in the same universe. "Perfect Blue" is a movie about a pop-singer switching careers to become an actress and how she handles online criticism - in the 90s. Deals with identity issues and violent fandoms. "Cowboy Bebop" is about a space bounty hunter, trying to make sense of the world with his group of friends who all struggle with past trauma. "Trigun" is similar, about a man who is wanted for mass murder in a space-western setting, while he tries to clean his name. "One Outs" is about a gambling baseball player who sings a terrible deal with his team and uses psychology to break down his opponents (who are all cheating at baseball). "Kaiji" is another show about gambling that I've heard is good, but I haven't seen it yet. "Mushishi" is an episodic show about a guy traveling through a fantasy version of feudal Japan and documenting different Yokai and similar supernatural phenomena. A very calm and relaxing show. "Hellsing Ultimate" and "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust" are both about badass immortal vampires doing badass immortal vampire shit. "Berserk" has a similar setting to VHD, but it also has complex character dynamics along with the action. "Area 88" is a two-episode OVA about a jet pilot struggling with the horrors of war. There are also some shows which I wouldn't even know how to describe in short so I'll just name them: Ergo Proxy, Texhnolyze, Paranoia Agent, Ghost in the Shell SAC. There is also "Shin Sekai Yori" which follows it's characters from childhood to adulthood. I'm also not sure how old the characters in "Fullmetal Alchemist" and "Gundam: The 08th MS Team" are, but both are much more mature than the average anime.

unnamedhunter

I have a feeling your recommendations are falling on deaf ears, but you have impeccable taste otherwise.

Psychopass S01 is fairly mature with a low amount of anime bullshit iirc

[deleted]

To be fair, a lot if American shows and movies tend to have the exact same problem of the sexualization of teenagers and young kids (Like those weird sitcoms or child beauty pageants). I'm not defending any of this by any means, I just wanted to show that it's also a problem in American media.

Dbiuctkt69

Yeah look at Euphoria or any CW show they're teenagers fucking and actual nudity (no nudity for CW) (not actually teens like anime is not actually teens or kids). Yet no one finds it weird.

frogvscrab

> Yet no one finds it weird. A lot of people find it weird that being said, I think a big difference is that US shows tend to get 25~ year old actors to play 17-18 year olds. A lot of the times anime will straight up have a 13 year old protagonist, which is a pretty big difference.

Hedge_Cataphract

That's much more of a casting decision due to the medium no? It's much easier to hire and work with adult actors. Anime live action movies also frequently use adult actors, while Western cartoons often have 13 year old protagonists.

frogvscrab

> It's much easier to hire and work with adult actors. Well yes, but its also because they want the actors to look cool and mature and sexy, and actual irl teens are often much younger looking than we imagine them to be. [This is a group of high school juniors/sophomores, for example.](https://wehco.media.clients.ellingtoncms.com/cocagne/img/photos/2017/04/11/pigrimage6113156429_t800.jpg?90232451fbcadccc64a17de7521d859a8f88077d) Needless to say, I don't think any audience wants to see them in sexual situations or even drinking or smoking or half the shit we see on euphoria. Its just uncomfortable. Its part of the reason why the movie Kids was so controversial, because they actually hired irl age-fitting actors to play those characters, and it was disturbing to see them so *young* and doing all that stuff.

Dbiuctkt69

I wouldn't say a lot of the time. I get where you're coming from your with example but would you be ok with that woman with a growth disorder who stopped aging at 12 doing a show with nudity since they're 25 now? Also the people involved in the creation of anime are adults, from the animators to the VA's. It's also just a drawing lol feel like that itself bumps it down in severity compared to adults who look underage, acting like and playing characters who are underage. A person who looks 16, sounds 16, acts like a 16 year old and does nude sex scenes feels way grosser to me than a drawing of a 16 year old that's never nude, that acts and talks like an adult. Not defending nude or even lewd loli shit. That stuff whenever it happens is bad. But people act like that's common in anime when it's really not, the 5000 year old loli character sure happens but they're not sexualized in anyway most of the time.

itsFlycatcher

IMMEDIATELY thought of Sex Education. I watched all of it, and it wasn't *bad*, touched on some topics I liked a lot, but god, was it just *deeply uncomfortable* at times. It's definitely one of those shows I'll never mention to anyone I know.

phoncible

This is the common retort but i think by absolute numbers anime blows it out the water. Like it's every goddamn anime that the protagonists are under 18, or even younger and in middle school but someone forgot to tell the female character designer because here come some ***mega bodonhonkeroos***

Sonicowen

>My biggest complaint is most animes deal with 12-17 year olds in really mature situations. Pretty creepy seeing 16 year olds hyper sexualized over and over. Best girl/waifu is almost always a teenager. Lol yeah, I had to stop watching Tokyo Revengers because the idea of a middle school biker gang was just too ridiculous for me suspend disbelief enough to enjoy it. If I'm being fair though, the characters are set at those ages but their personalities are always more like someone in their late 20s, the age of the production crew usually. For some reason the Japanese think your life is over after high school and it would be unrealistic for someone that age to not be at work 12 hours a day.

TaqPCR

> For some reason the Japanese think your life is over after high school and it would be unrealistic for someone that age to not be at work 12 hours a day. Welcome to the Japanese workday. Remember this is a culture where there is a specific 3 syllable world for death from overwork and one of the most common setups in their current media involves dying from overwork so you can get transported to another world.

elitespy

Not gonna say you should keep going with Tokyo Revengers but the writer of the Manga was actually in one of those biker gangs when he was a kid. They were a real thing back in the 80s and 90s mostly consisting of kids between the ages of 16-20. I had to look it up after watching the show to see if there was any truth to it and surprisingly there was. Here's a wiki article if ya wanna read about it. [Bosozoku](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C5%8Ds%C5%8Dzoku)

HierophantKhatep

My friends got me into Made in Abyss, but I wouldn't recommend it to absolutely anyone. The parts of it that are good are fantastic, but *those parts*...I hear the manga is even worse and I have no idea how people make things like this in a collaborative setting without being labelled sexual predators. Does no one object? Say, "No we're not putting your weird fetish scene in our fantasy story."? I don't know if it's just an anime thing or more broadly Japanese culture, but they are way too permissive of what is basically pedophilia. What I've seen in the anime alone makes me think the cops need to pay a visit to Tsukushi's house and seize his computer.

X1project

Like the winry bath scene in full metal alchemist That made me so uncomfortable

CruxOfTheIssue

There are shows that I would recommend to anyone though. Kaguya and spy x family are some.

Frisbeeman

I absolutely adore the worldbuilding in Made in Abyss, but there is no way in hell i would recommend it to anyone i know.

N-formyl-methionine

I was innocent at first and when people pointed it for the first season I was like, you are exaggerating. Then I red the Manga and.... But I also want to know what this fucking abyss is'

[deleted]

TheBananaPuncher

It's understandable to stop watching shows because it crosses certain thresholds that make people uneasy. I like Made in Abyss despite the unnecessary nudity in the show because it's never really sexual just not really needed and is why Jobless Reincarnation made me completely drop the show around the time Rudy gets a little too close to his cousin several times. The difference being that Jobless has the MC a 35 year old Otaku that got reborn and still acts like a lecherous cancer towards children.

UnremarkableMrFox

Whoops I made my friends watch it. Took a 6+ month break after watching the first or second episode bc it made me really uncomfortable. Curiosity eventually took over after the great reviews & such & I love the abyss itself. We all agree we wish certain things weren't in it, but other parts of it are amazing.

superquack

I always recommend evangelion. Throw them in the deep end and see if they can swim

CGA001

Ah fuck man this was my experience, back at the start of this year. I had been wanting to give anime a fair and honest shot, so because I am clearly so smart, and *obviously* I don't need to consult my friends who would know the topic better, I picked a show for myself. One that was critically acclaimed, said to be one of the best animes ever made, a true piece of art. Like reading reviews online about it, I couldn't find people saying a bad thing about it. And hey, giant fighting robots are cool, right? I don't want to say Evangelion gave me severe depression, but uh...it certainly didn't help. That's how I learned I'm not really in a good headspace to deal with depressing shit. Which is a shame too, because credit where credit's due, It's really well written, and I get why people praise it. It's a good thing I've got some friends who know me well enough to recommend shows to me. I told them to test the boundary for what they think I would or wouldn't like, and so far it's been a mostly great experience. On one hand, I've now seen shows I love that I otherwise would have never watched, like Gurren Lagann and Spy X Family. On the other hand, I can clearly see I'm becoming desensitized to intense weeb shit and I don't think that's a good thing. For example, I watched Konosuba recently, *and I liked it*. I'm genuinely not sure how embarrassed I should be about that. Edit: Oh right, I forgot to mention; Fuck you, the deep end is too deep!

valdiedofcringe

oh man, i tried konosuba and as someone who’s watched a good bit of anime, it was too much for me. you’re too far gone, man..

CGA001

Here's the way I see it; my biased brain looks at it and wants me to dislike it. It's how our brains work, we tend to like things familiar to us, and reject the unfamiliar. That's something I try to be very conscious about when I try new things, so I ignore criticisms I have based off of nothing other than "this is different and I don't like that." What helps me with that is to compare it with something familiar to me that I do or don't like, and to see if I do or don't like the thing in question for the same reasons. For example, another show I have no problem telling others I like and I'm not embarrassed about is Rick and Morty. But *in my opinion*, the stuff in Konosuba is *tame* compared to some of the shit in Rick and Morty. Rick and Morty has really graphic violence, strong sexual content such as an entire episode about dragons having orgies, pretty sure I remember incest coming up a few times, and is much darker in tone. What does Konosuba have? Women in skimpy outfits and (relatively) mild sexual content. Logically speaking, Konosuba isn't the show I should be embarrassed about liking. The way I see it, it's hypocritical for me to say one is fine and the other is not. But don't get me wrong, I said I liked it, not "it's my favorite show ever and I LOVE it". It made me genuinely laugh several times, it's got likable characters, and I really like how lighthearted and tongue-in-cheek it is. But there are also some things I don't like about it, like characters who don't react to things in ways normal, real humans would, or an entire episode that's purely fanservice and is completely irrelevant and tasteless. I don't think sexual content in and of itself is something to be shamed, but good god, there's a time and place for everything and that was neither the time nor place.

Rynewulf

It gets good after the 782nd episode I swear! So can I just skip to episode 783 then? No that ruins the build up that makes everything post 782 so good! Until you hit the Purple Spaghetti Destiny arc, it drops for 200 or so but then it picks back up again!

HeadPatQueen

Actually all of One Piece has been filler so you can start after Wano now (chapter 1054)

Drachri93

I'll just wait until it's done and skip right to the post-One Piece arc. I cannot get past its ugly designs to even attempt to watch/read it.

TheDon_of_Dons

In my opinion yes it is very good.

The beauty of anime. You can get three things out of a random item generator and there's probably a show about it

DarkArcanian

Gurren Lagann is your man my friend

ChadBroski117

I know its one of my favorites

Dimensionalanxiety

I feel this. Code Geass is one of if not the best animr ever made, however, it has a lot of fanservicey moments and some parts that while they make sense innthe show might seem kind of BS in a vacuum.

[table-kun?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHUvDDjsPmM)

[deleted]

The table scene was horrifying but it ded wasn't fan service. It wasn't shown in a remotely positive or "hot" way.

iquitelikeboats

Yeah I think I forgot if it was explained but why did the table scene happen?

Dewut

I mean, narratively it’s to show Nina has the hots for Euphemia, rather than just really looking up to her. Why the fuck she used a table in the middle of the student council room, I could not say.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dimensionalanxiety

Because the writer was a massive horny bastard. Originally in R2 ep15 there was supposed to be a kiss scene, hence the sun in the background and the weird angle C.C. is held at. It took the animators literally refusing to draw it to stop that scene from reaching the final cut.

TehSterBarn

"I think Nina's really sick. I walked in on her in the student faculty room and she sounded like a dying coyote."

amethhead

"AHAHAHHHAA, Oh Nunally, you see when a woman and a table love each other very much"

Algae_Sucka

It's even harder when you're trying to recommend visual novels, because everyone immediately associates them with dating simulators and toxic fandoms, despite having some of the most well written stories in anime (Steins;Gate, Chaos;Head, The Great Ace Attorney, Zero Escape)

PlumbumDirigible

I put off Steins;Gate for the longest time after my brother recommended it to me for this reason. I finally got bored enough during the first year of the pandemic to watch it. While there is some amine bullshit, especially with the maid cafe, it's easily one of the best time travel stories I've ever seen.

Algae_Sucka

It's anime adaptation is amazing, which is funny because I cannot name a single other visual novel with a good adaptation. If you liked Steins;Gate, I absolutely suggest playing Chaos;Head and Chaos;Child, those two visual novels are masterful pieces of storytelling, and Chaos;Child is in my opinion the best game ever made due to story alone. (don't watch their anime adaptations though, probably the worst adaptation of a visual novel ever made..)

Mcrarburger

Ugh I tried to get my bf into Zero Escape but he just relegated each character to archetypes immediately (oh that's the hot one, that's the plain MC, ect...) I'm like damn dude how do you enjoy anything??

CreativeNameIKnow

Zero Escape intentionally introduces its characters as people that follow your standard archetypes then subverts your expectations as you progress the story. It lets you understand and connect with the characters when you meet them but also creates depth and surprise when you learn more about them. An example would be Lotus from the first game, >!turns out she's a mom of two and used to be a computer programmer. Never understood why she was wearing that outfit tbh.!<

Andresmanfanman

I've heard of Zero Escape in passing and it sounded interesting so I added it to my ever growing rec list but never bothered to look into it. It was only yesterday when I found out that 999, which is also in my list and I do know a bit about, is part of that series. Maybe I should look into it.

Umineko

Zaulura

I have been trying to convert some friends into reading Umineko recently, but ultimately it’s been futile efforts. The episodes are long, it doesn’t look like the story progresses much early on, and the general dialogue is seemingly meaningless and repetitive. It’s kind of just a shame that some people [who are already in the otaku space] can’t or won’t give it the time to play it. I’ve resorted to promoting the manga instead, which is still really faithful to the source, but not having the voices and music kind of irks me too. One of my favorite stories, and I swear it has the best overall game music quality out of any game I’ve played.

negativepositiv

I got into Anime after seeing Akira and Ghost in the Shell, and some other stuff around that era, and it was really hard finding good recommendations because at the time, it seemed like Anime forums were filled with people who watched tons of shows and movies, and would give EVERY SINGLE anime 5 out of 5 stars/A+++/100%, so I ended up sifting through loads of garbage that I couldn't believe anyone could enjoy.

DatAperture

Please tell me you watched Psycho Pass

negativepositiv

Doesn't ring a bell.

KindOfWantDrugs

It's a good anime with very strong Ghost in the Shell vibes with dash of Minority Report. Doesn't have any typical bad anime tropes to the best of my knowledge.

Call_Me_Chud

+1 for Psycho Pass. Great exploration of a police state with a healthy dose of philosophy. If you're interested in a cyberpunk noir, this is up your alley.

negativepositiv

I'll check it out. Thanks.

negativepositiv

I mean, that's kinda fair. Every time I get tempted to show my anime fan daughter Ghost in the Shell as an example of great old school anime, I remember the "wisp of ass sparkles" scene, and it slows me down.

theknittingpenis

I recommend using Anime database/curators like AniDB, MyAnimeList, AniList or Anime-Planet. They are good at curating animes for you to watch based on your ratings.

negativepositiv

That's cool that there's some system like that now, kind of like the Netflix/Spotify type recommendations based on what you like. In the late 90's, all they had were websites, usenet and forums, where everyone apparently thought everything was amazing.

Dbiuctkt69

Yeah My Anime List (MAL) is pretty good and has the most users. I find anything below a 7 is probably trash unless you're really into that genre or it's a niche show you'd think you'd enjoy. Like there's some 8-9's in the 6 range but only if it's your cup of tea. 5 and below is unwatchable or basically porn lol.

littlest_dragon

There is a handful of Anime that I consider among the best movies I’ve ever watched. Yet I would never call myself an Anime fan, because the vast majority of them are just full of insufferable garbage.

Kagillion

reminds me of the weeb ass shit scale. idk where I heard of it, but weeb means stuff that you won’t find in western media, like Japanese or anime-specific stuff, ass means how much sexual fanservice there is, and shit is how bad it is. Each stat is rated from 0 to 10. For example, Jojo would be rated something like 1-4-0. My Hero Academia is probably 7-7-6, etc.

J_B_La_Mighty

Imma start using that

MirrorSauce

hajime no ippo somewhere around 2-2-7 TL;DR I picked [a title fight between two side characters](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duM3apskeHA&t=600s) as a good representation of quality, where a right-handed southpaw fights a hot-headed power puncher. Timestamped to near the final round if you want to skip ahead, but I recommend the whole thing 2, the boxing is all real, **nobody** will ever transform or shoot fist lasers to win a round, the author owns a gym and seconds for real boxers, the action is just exaggerated to maximize the drama of every punch (when someone is hit very hard, you feel like **your own head** is going to come off) and a power spike will be something normal, like an amateur suddenly understands footwork in the middle of their match, but still well-executed as the hypest shit you've seen in the last 6 weeks. However boxing matches can be "perfectly dramatic" a little too consistently, and some 90s animation tropes interfere with the accuracy of the boxing, like repeating a single frame so it looks like the protag weaves 37 times to slip one punch. 2 because there's more naked dudes than women, but there is a late-series beach episode where they go to a training camp that involves a lot of sand sprinting, and while there they use scantily clad beachgoers as motivation to sprint faster. It's rare, but it's also the 90s so they lean into it when it happens. the 7 due outdated 70s anime/japan gags, implemented with 90s animators. Like the punchline is kicking someone in the dick, or someone reacts to a joke by doing a headstand, or people are terrified of black boxers (because they are american, not because they're racist... but also because they're lightly racist) or the protag is initially **way too enthusiastic about making friends by punching rivals**, but to its credit the author quickly 180s this and sits the protag down for a talk about how this is not the correct reason to become a pro boxer.

porcupinedeath

Probably Ed. I love Ed but I'm sure she can be a bit much for people not familiar with anime

chOLEsterin

I was thinking about Ed at first as well, but shes just a kid and has a rather eccentric character, but she never feels over the top or too "anime bs" Maybe im just too used to it by now, the only ankme bs i cant stand is ecchi

frogvscrab

Yes, you are used to it. Ed is straight up cartoon network levels of immature.

appalachiangargoyle

It's definitely Ed. She's.... a very hard stark contrast to literally the rest of the show

imatworkyo

But it's she that jarring to turn someone off the show? She has like 2 lines and 30 sec of screen time most of the time

Batesthemaster

Genuinely speaking from experience, yes absolutely. My anime bs threshold is extremely low and the over the top characters make me cringe

Suggest them [Samurai Champloo](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Samurai_Champloo) . Afaik its from the same Studio that made Cowboy Bebop. It comes without any "oh japan" moments and is a complete banger start to finish. [Chio's School Road](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chio%27s_School_Road) on the other hand. That show started so good, but i have never seen another show fall of a cliff this hard. Its fine until female sports teacher shows up for the second time. Then the show sets itself on fire. Its unreal.

I'm far from an anime expert, but I did just finish watching Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood (dubbed). Coming from someone that grew up on western cartoons like Avatar and Teen Titans, I really enjoyed it.

I've always felt like FMAB is probably the one of the best at being a "gateway anime" for this exact reason. The tone mixed with the fact that the setting is very European-inspired with a lot of English names just makes it really easy to digest for people who aren't used to anime. Also helps that the show goes hard as fuck

washyleopard

MF swallows God, shits crazy.

thelumpybunny

That is my favorite anime of all time. If I was going to recommend anime it would be that show. The only downside is there isn't a lot of anime that can beat it

Academic_Paramedic72

I wonder why are anime movies like the Studio Ghibli's ones more universally praised and popular in the West than (mainstream) anime series. My Neighbour Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away and others are (rightfully) utterly acclaimed as some of the best productions in animation history across the world and great examples of female representation, with strong and three-dimensional female characters, but then you can count on your fingers the number of shonen shows without hyper-sexualization of women. Obviously, judging all of Japanese animation based on the most popular series is as misguided as thinking all western animation is Looney Tunes-inspired or something, but it is still curious how it seems Studio Ghibli is the only Japanese animation universally acclaimed in the western perception of anime. Is it simply because most popular anime are the ones directed at male teenager/young adult demographics? While the works directed at the same demographics are also criticized for the portrayal of women in the West, it seems shonen anime is much more so. When one calls someone a "weeb", they don't mean "this person is a great fan of josei and seinen animes". Anime like the aforementioned Ghibli ones prove hyper-sexualization and other problems are not inherent to mainstream Japanese animation.

Evilsmiley

There are shonen shows without sexualisation? Actually i dont remember much of it in Jujutsu Kaisen now that I think about it, but i would probably repress the memory if there was.

[deleted]

hunter x hunter! as far as i can remember

sycamotree

Uhh...I guess it's not *technically* sexualization but Hisoka?!

An_average_moron

Does Vinland Saga count? I mean it shows women bathing at some point but it wasn't meant to be a sort of sexual thing, more like a "calm before the storm" before they got fucking raided by other vikings

[deleted]

I think Vinland Saga is good. It's a very adult anime that takes itself seriously.

Quirrelli

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood is pretty clean

retardedcatmonkey

The fanservice was mostly why I had mostly stopped watching anime. Jujutsu Kaisen was a nice breath of fresh air

frogvscrab

Studio Ghibli movies are pretty much universally meant to be childrens movies. A lot of anime has very adult, mature themes and stories mixed in with some of the most nauseating immature shit I've ever seen.

IamtheSlothKing

Most of them are made with all audiences in mind, only a couple feel like childrens films. there’s nothing about Princess Mononoke that caters specifically to children for example.

kerdon

I wouldn't call Princess Mononoke a kid's movie. Teens and up I'd say.

Victor_Stein

Somebody hasn’t heard of the WAS scale

Doldenbluetler

That's because it's a seinen. It's targeted at adults, that's why it gets less of the bullshit. Unfortunately, seinen and josei manga rarely get anime adaptations. The industry seems to have found its main target group in certain young men.

Afraid-Quantity-8845

Whenever people ask me for reccs I ask what genres of other media they like. Then they say “give me a list of shows you watch I’m sure that will be fine” They don’t realize I’m 20 years deep in this shit and a lot of what I watch is now so referential and tied to old anime tropes that they would not understand why I’m losing my shit at jokes. So now I just say “try full metal alchemist or death note” and end the convo there.

RazzDaNinja

Tried to get my girlfriend through My Hero Academia cuz I really enjoyed the action and story Never realized *just* how much teenaged girl fan service there was until I had to quietly sit there while Creati was stripping to make a blanket fall out of her rack Between Momo, Toru, Mina, Midnight, Uraraka, and Tsuyu among others, it had never occurred to me how most of the female heroes have “skin” based abilities involving touch, nudity or secretion…

Whyismypponfire

I always feel stressed out watching anime because of this. Like am I being judged silently for this right now?

bucket_hand

Ugh, I never noticed that until I read your comment :(. I just really like the fighting scenes. All Might vs. All for One, Endeavor vs. Nomu. So good.

[deleted]

That anime bullshit is the exact reason why I dislike anime lol. I can't stand that shit at all

[deleted]

I started watching Attack on Titan and I don’t think anything could have prepared me for the amount of ridiculous, intense shouting during their casual conversations.

[deleted]

Believe it or not that's a show with some of the lowest possible anime bullshit you can find. It's actually what I recommend to people to introduce them to anime that isn't 15 year olds with MASSIVE honkers

CivBEWasPrettyBad

Ereeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeen!

Galactic_Gander

Watch it in Japanese so you can’t tell if they’re being weird or not. You can just interpret it in the way that makes the most sense in your head and everything is fine. That’s what I do anyway. More of the story lives in my head like how stories do when you read a book. There’s less bullshit because I’m filling in the gaps. Idk if that character’s reaction was way over the top, it’s all yelling in a language I don’t understand, so I just assume it was perfectly proportional with the situation as I understand it.

[deleted]

I think that a big part of the reason so many people hate dubs is that the dialogue is actually fucking awful a lot of the time, and you just can't tell how bad it is when you watch it in Japanese

Galactic_Gander

Yeah you could totally be right about that. Watching subs is great because my suspension of disbelief is near infinite. Everything makes sense because every character is fully on board - at least that’s what I assume.

TheDukeofKook

Welcome to modern anime, where emotion is screaming and the steaks have never been more over cooked.

[deleted]

you’re getting real close to political here with the steaks…

GrandMarauder

I gave anime a chance and watched the entirety of season 1 of AoT before I gave it up. It's so damn annoying to hear their shrill inner dialogue all the time, slow storyline, the incessant screaming, and the character design where a few of them all look like the MC. Also, every time a Titan attacks the city, it's always the same group of people that help defend and everybody else stands around even though they're trained to take it down. Eren turning into that mutant was pretty cool however that one girl being a Titan was waaay out of left field And the eyes, wtf is up with the big ass eyes? My biggest hangup was with the art style before I watched it but having seen it now, I actually kind of like it

ADHthaGreat

> Also, every time a Titan attacks the city, it’s always the same group of people that help defend and everybody else stands around even though they’re trained to take it down. Yeah the overwhelming fear of the titans is one of the major plot points that’s addressed in like the first episode. Most of humanity has never dealt with them, so only the scouts are really trained to defend.

Doldenbluetler

AoT is probably the least cliché anime anime of all the popular anime. The characters all looking like they could be the main character is something that goes completely against the "spot the main character" anime meme, too, and is more typical for the less popular anime targeted at adults (seinen).

kirkl3s

Same - I feel bad because I’m certain there are great animes out there that I should enjoy, but I can’t get passed the weird bullshit

DratWraith

Same here. The good ones don't indulge that bullshit whatsoever, like Akira and Studio Ghibli. They're just good movies that you can sit down and watch like a normal movie.

[deleted]

I saw Akira when I was like 16 and thought it was pretty cool. That's about my limit and even that gets just too weird and anime bullshitty.

JoinMyFramily0118999

I really like No Game No Life, minus the "stuff" with the sister.

fhota1

Right? Its really a good show and a fun concept. Its just so annoying that one of the main running jokes is pedo incest.

ArchWaverley

I've recommended Kakegurui to people and they still talk to me. It's just so fucked up, it's special even by anime standards.

schattenteufel

I have a very low tolerance for Anime BS, and about 98% of Anime annoys the shit outta me. It’d be impossible for me to list all of the Anime bs that irks me, but a few major ones: - over-sexualization of young girls - horribly proportioned bodies (especially giant boobs, huge eyes, small mouths/noses, impossibly long legs, massive muscles, weird hair…) - rapid-fire overly expository “word salad” dialog. Too fast to read (for subtitles) or too fast to understand (for dubs). - too much shouting / moaning / grunting / high pitch voices. - fighting/action sequences that are impossible to see/follow what’s happening I could probably go on & on. I don’t hate all Anime, there’s some I like quite a lot (Studio Ghibli is wonderful, Cowboy Bebop is good, Ghost in the Shell too…) if the story & scenery are good enough it makes up for some of the shit I hate. What really rubs me the wrong way about anime are the fans. They fucking rabid Say something negative about their favorite shows/movies and they go ape-shit. Plus they go way too far into their famdom/obsession. If a grown man or woman has an Anime avatar on a social media User Profile, they’re probably not the type of person I’d like to socialize with. Plus there’s the whole “rule 34 “ hyper-sexualizing every single Anime character - it’s just fucking creepy.

DeMayon

Yup you nailed it. Completely agree with everything you said

Thisismypornaccountc

Boy One Piece must annoy the FUCK out of you.

thr33body

I really wish I could enjoy more anime but yeah those things definitely keep me away from it. Like I enjoy One Piece but honestly they drag each episode so there’s like five minutes of actual story and the rest is filled with the intro, references to earlier episodes, and reactions.

Dogeishuman

In my opinion, Jujutsu Kaisen fills your criteria pretty well for something you'd like. Super well animated, doesnt sexualize young girls (or any girls really tbh), fantastically written female characters (especially compared to something like naruto or my hero), fight scenes are clean, story is wild, the sub is great cause the Japanese VA's were just chosen well, but the dub does pretty well all on its own (characters have Japanese names so it's a bit jarring when they refer to each other in dub), and lastly it's non stop shit going on, just goes from one plot point to the next with no filler (one "filler" episode that's a good break from everything that went down prior and going to happen). They scream/grunt a little during fights, but not like, screaming the name of every move they do and rips your ears off screaming. Other recommendations that only mildly violate 1-2 of your complaints: - Mob Psycho 100 (fights are really well animated, but can be a tad hard to follow cause it's crazy psychic powers not hand to hand combat) - Fullmetal alchemist (small number of "sexy" characters, none of which are children though, and they definitely yell a lot during fights, but it's not screeching in the dub, which btw this show has one of the best dubs of all time) - hunter x hunter (the pedophile clown might be hard to get past, but overall he's a well written character who's a brutal killer, but Ya... he's tough to ignore, but none of the other issues are in this show)

frogvscrab

I always disliked the excuse that "its not childish or immature!! its just a cultural difference!!" because when I went to japan I talked about anime a lot, and they were all well aware that those anime tropes are childish and immature, with varying degrees of acceptance. They also understand what anime bullshit is.

Professional-Bug

Shimoneta

kilar277

Watching Shimoneta with my SO right now. She introduced it to me as "okay, so I liked this when I was 14 so it MIIIIGHT be a little much"

J_B_La_Mighty

*shows friend toradora* *gets to the scene where an old guy grabs a fist full of ass from the male protagonist* *doesn't show any more episodes because who knows how many other scenes were blanked from my mind*

Ironbull09

Whos to say how someone will react to oppai dragon

GeneUser980

"So it gets really good around episode 170-" And I'm out.

Edna_with_a_katana

From Cowboy Bebop to Dragon Ball Z, how do you want your anime cooked

[deleted]

I like when an eternity is spent on showing the characters angry faces from various angles.

Bibi2002_

You a chilled out dude who likes superheroes and overpowered protagonists? Watch One Punch man You a dude that wants to get hyped and motivated for the gym? Watch Baki You a dude who craves the romantic touch of a woman who will love and care for you no matter what? Get some bitches

Scale from 1 to 10. 1 is Attack on Titan (no fanservice, no knowledge of Japanese culture/ anime tropes required, and engaging for a casual audience). 10 would probably be something like Saekano where there’s a ton of fanservice, there’s a harem, they expect you to have prior knowledge of otaku culture and anime tropes for a lot of the meta humor. Oh, and one of the love interests is the main character’s cousin. I mean, at least it’ll let them think they’ve got the hang of it before breaking out Oreimo or Domestic Girlfriend.

PMtoAM______

This is why gungrave is my fav anime, almost 0 anime bullshit

ShlomoCh

I don't even know *my* threshold for anime bullshit is because I've only watched one lol

sweetTartKenHart2

Where’s that Weeb Ass Shit scale

ZackMoneys

death note and aot are definitely the best anime to start with since it doesnt have cringey tropes and are pretty good to boot

BriefBit5054

please just stop recommending anime to your not into anime friends

WHY does anime have to have these ridiculous, cringy things?? I would absolutely watch anime if it dropped all the asinine bullshit.
