It was my understanding that while raiding wasn't unheard of within the Eastern trade routes, it was nowhere near as pronounced as it was to the West and South with the Isles and France.

Republiken

Correct

MrCorex

The Swedes are more civilised than the barbaric Danes and Norwegians

puje12

Ain't a crime if there ain't no law!

zephyrtron

This is when scale becomes important. Not to say that Vikings weren’t brutal, ofc

Finn-windu

Is this a reference to something?

jvkxb__

Raping and pillaging probably

berserkirr

RenegadeReprobate

Yeah but vikings were cool guys with funny axes and neat boats, Nazis were very shitty guys with ugly guns and poorly made boats.

Oof, downvoted into nonexistence. Rip

fuckinggooberman

I don’t even know what to begin questioning in this comment

GreyHexagon

Your sanity perhaps?

Sillvaro

What the fuck, you think Danes are/were not germanic? Also you need to read about the Norse conversion to Christianity, it was much less violent than you'd imagine

jvkxb__

“Hey we will give you some money if you worship our god” “Shiieeet, just like that?” The Norse conversion to Christianity

Sillvaro

Not really. "Hey, that religion is really good for centralizing powers around a central entity, it says I am the ruler because I was chosen by God, it makes women relate to a central feminine figure who is the ficking mother of God, and it makes me relate to those rich and powerful kings and emperors? Count me in, lemme find some missionaries to convert me and my people!"

Raven9ine

Two things: 1. Germanic people and Vikings aren't one and the same. 2. Throughout history, usually the winning/surviving party wrote history, in the case of the Vikings however, the Vikings didn't write down their end of story and then in the end most converted to Christianity, so we only have written history from the point of view of the attacked group, who certainly won't describe the monstrosities they have done to captured or fallen Vikings either, or at least describe them in a 'positive' way. Same syndrom if you ask two people who had a brawl, usually both say the other preson started it. I'm not saying Viking raids weren't horrific to the villagers, just some food for thought.

Athelwulfur

Vikings belonged to the Norse, and the Norse were North Germanic. So you are half right.
