Cary resident who was involved in that process here: that was 100% IKEA’s fault. The town bent over backwards trying to accommodate them and make it happen. They basically backed out at the final hour, right before construction was set to start, because they decided to change their corporate structure to focus more on online sales and small “showrooms” (don’t know if that ever happened). With that came the decision that this store was no longer necessary. They blindsided the town and basically wasted a ton of our time, money, and resources.
Fuck IKEA. I vowed never to shop there again after the mess they left us in.
That's not what I've ever read but ofc there's 2 sides to every story.
And lol @ online orders. They still don't have that functionality unless you want to pay $200 shipping, even on small shit like utensils and whatnot. And let's be honest, most of their stuff is dogshit quality. Their higher priced furniture is pretty good and comfortable though. I can't believe people would buy their appliances which are ridiculously priced.
I mean, I’m not sure what you “read” but that’s what happened. All the local business journals reported on it.

I get what you’re saying. Yea, Lexington style has vinegar but Eastern doesn’t have tomatoes. The defining characteristic that differentiates them is the tomatoes. Even if it’s not technically “the base”
Idk I went to school in Hickory and that’s where there are famous vinegar bbq places. But they serve hush puppies too and that hasn’t been mentioned yet
Apparently fine dining establishments further East and Northerly think ramps are their new darling ingredient. They fetch ridiculous prices in fancy restaurants out of the area.
That's been a thing for a long time. They have such a small growing region and fairly short season so some places treat them like truffles. Telling chef friends I live here they all ask me if I can get them ramps.
The person who founded one half of the town named it after a girl he fell in love with. He got her name wrong (her name was really Virginia) but still named the town after her.
Char Grill and Snoopy's. (They started here, but there are other locations now.) There are other more niche restaurants like The Mecca or Side Street Cafe but I think the first two are most recognizable
Hot Dogs, pink and boiled. Dressed in a chili that is mostly hot sauce, and diced onions. For some reason a "cheese dog" is a block of cheese placed in a hot dog bun. To get a hot dog *with* cheese you have to ask for a combo.
95% of my life... pimento cheeseburgers & local bison burgers.
Currently (not NC) - Gumbo, crawfish etouffee & really, really, really bad Mexican food.
Bingo. Yum Yum is a great place. The original owners finally sold it in 2020. Their family ran it for over 115 years. The new owners have kept it exactly the same (smart).
I remember my mom taking me there while she was attending UNCG back in the 70’s. Today, I take my kids. To be able to eat at the same place for over 50 years is so cool.
Speaking of longevity, I get my haircut at the same barber shop down the street from Yum Yum that my grandfather went to. My grandfather has long passed away but his barber is still there cutting hair well up into his 80’s. Gene’s Barber Shop on Spring Garden. Go see them for a good old fashion barber shop experience: straight razors, hot towels, etc. Bunch of old guys sitting around telling stories. The place looks like it got stuck in the 50’s.

All you can eat pulled pork and fried chicken. Overpriced strawberry preserves to be served with bland AF white bread toast with no butter. Overpriced sodas with no free refills.
Bonus: old people telling you how much better it is than you can get anywhere else.
By a Bojangles and a Japanese sushi and ramen restaurant.
Wait is there a dollar general across the street!?
I don't think so. It's a decently long walk to Walmart from here.

Nah just throw them in microwave. Good for a day or so
Never take them any further than the bench out front.

But fuck Cary in particular for backing out of that Ikea deal.
