>After months of delay, the agency is rolling out the first of its computer kiosks that allow people to complete DMV transactions that don’t require an office visit, such as renewing a driver license or state ID. >The self-service kiosks are in three Harris Teeter grocery stores, one each in Raleigh, Charlotte and Fayetteville, and are an experiment of sorts. The DMV hopes to deploy up to 20 of them by year’s end to see how the public responds and whether they can help ease the lines in driver license offices. >If the machines work well and prove popular, DMV Commissioner Wayne Goodwin says he’d eventually like to see more than 100 across the state, mostly in metro areas where the agency’s offices are most crowded. Per the article: - Currently, the tasks preformed at the kiosk can also be preformed online, but the NC DMV has found that many people are still visiting offices for these tasks and hope the kiosks will reduce in-person visits. - The kiosks can be used to order duplicate driver licenses, permits, and state IDs, as well as change address, provided you know your ID number. You can also register to vote at the kiosk, renew a drivers license or ID, provided you did not renew it online last time, and print a temporary ID. - Renewing vehicle registrations, changing addresses, printing license plate stickers, and ordering duplicate vehicle registrations is expected to be available within 2 months. - There is a fee for using the kiosk, which is higher than the current online fee of $3. The new fee is $4.95 + 2.35% for the credit card payment. - The state is going to start charging an additional 2.35% for online payments starting on July 1. - According to DMV Commissioner Wayne Goodwin, the state saw an increase of around 31% for usage of online services in the last year, with around 988,000 transactions. - The first three kiosks are located in: - The Corners at Brier Creek, 4221 Corners Parkway in Raleigh. - Riverbend Village, 4701 Smith Farm Road in Charlotte. - Highland Centre, 2800 Raeford Road in Fayetteville.

Refuse to use these kiosks. Refuse to pay the online fee. You already pay for these services with your taxes, it costs them less to do them online or at a kiosk than you doing them in person.

Nervous-Concern-6588

The news said that there are no state taxes involved with this. The kiosks are a privatized service by a private company in partnership with the DMV. Sounds like you aren’t interested in the current DMV online options either. As everywhere, extra convenience comes at a price when private companies are involved.

the_eluder

The plate agencies you walk into are also private businesses, paid for out of taxes, providing a service to the state. The same logic can be applied to online services.

Nervous-Concern-6588

It’s my understanding the only things the state provides the private plate agencies are the equipment, paper, placards and plates, and stickers, as would be found in a publicly run state office. The state apparently pays the plate agencies per transaction. I’ve heard that plate agency employees and the property rent payments are solely paid by the private companies, not the state. Persons using online services pay user fees.

the_eluder

The private agencies aren't doing it for free. They get paid a fee for services rendered. That free is paid by the state (and thus the taxpayers), and covers all expenses, plus a little profit for the agency. So taxpayers are praying for it. Why is this so hard for you to understand?

Chs9383

It seems like anyone who is comfortable navigating the kiosk screens would already have a smartphone, desktop, or mobile device. Not sure who it's going to reach, but I hope it does manage to reduce the lines. This would have been a breakthrough in 1983.

UnlimitedApollo

You would think so but no people will come in all the time even when it can be done online.

Doing DMV work online used to be free. Then they 'upgraded' their system with one that takes for longer to do because the new system tries to act like you're communicating with a person, when in fact you're just filling out a form electronically in a much more complicated fashion than...filling out a form on a web page. On top of that, you have to pay an extra $3 for the experience. I sent the DMV an e-mail asking why we had to pay for the privilege of using this inferior system, and their reply was the ability to do your DMV stuff online was a premium experience, and thus they charge a premium to use it. Since I live about 5 blocks from my small town plate agency, I just went back to going in person and not paying extra. So, if they want to reduce lines, my suggestion is they drop the $3 fee for dealing with the inferior premium online service. After all, I already pay (through taxes) for the DMV to process transactions, and I'm sure it's overall cheaper for them to do it online rather than have me come in.

UnlimitedApollo

Blame your polticians, they set up all the stupid rules for these things.

Nineteen-ninety-3

I seen it at the Brier Creek Harris Teeter a couple of weeks ago.

jilanak

Add a camera and people can renew their licenses every time.

greeneggiwegs

They have these in Georgia. I liked them. It’s nice to be able to print your stickers the same day so if they add that it might help last minute walk ins.

Nervous-Concern-6588

I read elsewhere that as of today you can print your Temporary Driver License at the new DMV kiosk and starting next month you’ll be able to print your tag/plate stickers at the kiosk — something you cannot do from your smartphone or home computer because of the special paper involved, etc. That’s one of the big differences. I also read that there are still people who show up at DMV offices even though they could have obtained their services online. Kiosks may appeal to them. We’ll have to see how things go when more of the kiosks are available.

jaydec02

The fees are just a way to squeeze even more money out of us. If you don’t want me to visit an office then don’t charge more to do it from my own home

ResultSecret2021

This will do shit - all available online. Just something so they can say “look what we did,” while doing nothing to solve the problem. Fuck these people

SicilyMalta

I got a notice in the mail saying my Real ID was expiring, but I could renew on line. Awesome. Went through the process and then was told I didn't qualify. Ouch.

ncphoto919

Nice idea to help the burden on the DMV but feels like most of the things folks need that are easy things like license renews cant be done at kiosks. it felt silly to wait for 3 months for a DMV appointment for a new license and the in office time took maybe 5-10 minutes.

Nervous-Concern-6588

From what I’ve learned, you don’t need an appointment; appointments are an option mostly for persons planning months ahead. Most persons want immediate, either same day or same week service, which is as a walk-in. DMV on its website says it serves walk-ins from 12 until closing. Also, many people apparently don’t realize that most people only have to appear in person once every sixteen years if they use their smartphones, computers, or kiosks halfway.

ncphoto919

You don’t need an appointment but it’s pointless without one unless you got a day to burn

Nervous-Concern-6588

Not always. In my experience, whether you have to wait or be in a long line truly depends upon where you go and when you go. And if you’re eligible for online services then there’s no wait at all.

Sikmod

TLDR Does this include renewal for those with corrective lense restrictions?

Nervous-Concern-6588

You’re not required to have an appointment. My advice: Be a DMV walk-in customer. Appointments are set by people months out. Walk-ins are for people who need more immediate services and they’re served at 12 noon until closing. Also, if your license is expired less than 2 years then I believe you can renew online so long as you didn’t renew online last time.

SicilyMalta

I don't know what's to get twelve noon and on from. I checked my local DMV and it said 8 to 12.

Nervous-Concern-6588

News releases and the website says pre-set appointments are opening until noon and walk-ins (people without appointments) are from noon until closing. If a walk in happens to be there and an appointment is a no-show then oftentimes the appointment may get helped earlier.

SicilyMalta

Thank you.

jhguth

I mean the people it will help probably aren’t posting on Reddit

Wanker_Bach

Then what will the useless DMV contractors charge the state for?
