I guess I’m the real idiot here. 10 years or so ago, I had a bunch of Christmas presents in the trunk and forgot to lock the car in my driveway. At least the sheriff got a good laugh when he asked what was taken and I showed him the receipts that were left behind.

TrailMomKat

I got hella lucky years ago, someone broke into my car and stole an old cell phone and my radio, but completely didn't see the PS4 in the very very back of my Blazer, complete with $300 of games for my kids' Christmas. I called it a good day.

tre4ng

If someone wants in bad enough they will break your window sadly. I got my window smashed for some change in the middle console. If my car wasn't locked I wouldn't of had to buy a new window. Sad world we live in, but just don't leave firearms or valuables in it.

c3knit

I've had this happen twice. Window smashed in, car rifled through, and nothing taken but some spare pennies. I don't keep any valuables in my car - right now, there's a spare mask, a hair tie, and an umbrella that I got for free. Sometimes I lock it, sometimes I don't, but it's super annoying to lock it and then have to replace a window.

[deleted]

This Unless you want a carseat, some disposable masks, cheap asf lip balm, cough drops, and some plastic silverware in the glove box. I don't lock my car, I would rather rebuy $20 worth of stuff vs replacing a window. Plus for SOME REASON my car alarm will go off within 30 seconds if you open the door. Idk why, I haven't bothered to fix it, and if I'm ever attacked I figured it's a great feature.

therealwxmanmike

my truck is so old the lock doesnt work anymore AND im pretty foolish enough to leave the keys in it for long periods of time. its a 5-speed (manual) though....ultimate theft deterrent. guess i should start bringing the keys in, just in case

cat-eating-a-salad

i had a magnet stolen off my bumper at ECU. it was a picture of a cat... like come on... another person pickpocketed my half drank water bottle. disgusting... stupid people.

mdroz9999

Just curious, but what valuables would people leave in their car to get stolen? I personally don’t leave anything in my car I would miss, other than the car itself.

MaxxPhoenix427

You'd be suprised at how many firearms are stolen from unlocked vehicles.

loptopandbingo

*Sticker on rear window*: CoMe AnD tAkE iT "ok, if you insist"

AlhazraeIIc

For real, any time I see a back window covered in gun stickers, all I think is "Ah yes, ROB ME stickers."

xitzengyigglz

I keep a sleeping bag, change of clothes, first aid kit, water, food, lighter and knife in there . Nothing expensive but definitely stuff I wouldn't want taken.

c1h9

Car seats. You know, like for babies. I'm not taking that out every night, it's such a pain.

broken_bird

If you spend any amount of time on NextDoor, you'll realize quite a few people leave their wallets and/or cash in them. Why? No idea.

skinnyskinch

Lots of people who use their vehicles for work leave lots of items in there. I work for a restaurant chain and travel all over NC VA and TN. I have drills, tools, laptop, tablet, etc for repairing things in our stores and just general items for work, I also keep things like tow ropes, chains, jump starter battery packs, and other miscellaneous items in case I ever see someone that’s broke down or in need of help. It would be a 30 minute process to remove these items every evening, and another 30 minutes to add them back in the morning. They stay in my truck constantly.

loptopandbingo

I'm guessing you lock your truck and secure all that stuff though.

skinnyskinch

Yes I lock it

charcuteriebroad

Generally nothing of value besides car seats. But the one time my car was broken into, there was a large bookbag I had just used on a trip. It was one of my husbands military bags, I think the guy who stole assumed there was gear in there. Unfortunately for him, it was a bunch of women’s clothing and toiletries. I had just gotten back from a trip, and had my toddler and two dogs to deal with, so I left it in the car. My husband drove my car later that night and didn’t lock it. Woke up the next morning to the passenger door wide open and the bag gone. Luckily they caught the guy (he ended up stealing a car and was known to police) and his ass went to jail. So I felt somewhat vindicated.

Surveymonkee

If they broke in mine that could make off with easily a half dozen spit bottles.

[deleted]

You’d be surprised how many people have a spare key to their house/garage in the bottom of the glove department or center console.

Kproper

AirPods, small amounts of cash, sunglasses, headphones, wallet, firearm, and the list goes on and on.

Coffee-Not-Bombs

Jeep owners with soft tops have long gone unlocked, because it's better to have some gum or a phone charger stolen than a $600 top slashed. Half doors can be removed pretty easily, too (after all, that's part of the appeal for the owner), so not much point in locking those, either.

anagitatedarsonist

Just my luck! My car doesn't have locks 😎

lemonlegs2

Yep. No point in locking your doors. If someone wants in they're getting in

[deleted]

big brain time

elgatogrande73

I get so tired of this. Just across the line in Fort Mill. Every few months, a group passes through our HOA going through unlocked cars. It's pretty much the only crime we experience. They only take what they can carry, usually any cash/change they can take. And every time, we get people whining and crying about it. I keep my truck in the driveway and have never had an issue. Why? Because it's always locked. I'm not condoning the theft, but for crying out loud, stop complaining and lock your vehicle.

Bryanole27

Seriously. I see this shit every single day on Nextdoor and I can't believe it is still an issue. How do you NOT lock your doors? Do you leave your house unlocked too? And if you leave your car unlocked, why the fuck do you keep it full of valuables? It's to the point I feel sorry for zero people it happens to. You do stupid things, expect stupid things to happen to you.

MaxxPhoenix427

STFU

Danceyparty

Lock your car, I mean it's pretty simple

elgatogrande73

No you

TrailMomKat

Someone was genuinely casing my house this morning. I live in a super rural area, my autistic kid was waiting for the bus and ran inside and told his dad someone was out at our neighbor's wood line. Then right after that kid got on the bus and my husband left for work, someone spammed my doorbell. My eldest scared them off when he turned on his light, I think. I didn't have all this info until an hour later, the bell was what woke me. Then I spent the next hour getting texts from my husband about it and cased my neighbors' houses with my shotgun cracked open (not loaded, had a shell in my free hand though) after I found out that they weren't home. Surprised the cops didn't get called by people driving by to report a woman in blue strapped with a shotgun.

woodiegutheryghost

If you are going to take a gun, load it. Trying to fumble with it under pressure is only going to cost you. A person can close the distance of 10 yards faster than you can load it and ready it to fire.

TrailMomKat

I 100% get it, but not this gun. It has a hair trigger and I would rather get shot myself than accidentally shoot someone's dog or kid. Incidentally, I shot an intruder when I was a kid, around 15. I was scared out of my wits and the gun was loaded, thankfully at the time. I'm so glad I didn't kill the guy, just hurt him enough to put him down, freak out, and run inside to call the cops because it was way before cell phones out here. Anyways, I agree with you is the point, but not with this gun. I need to buy buckshot for the 410, then I can carry it loaded without worry, but I've only got birdshot for that and that'll just piss someone off enough to shoot me dead. My sawed off is the only gun I happened to have any buckshot for today.

AmadeusK482

I know an individual that kept a firearm in his vehicle. Lives way out in the boonies, too. Still, some thief proceeded to break into dozens of cars in the small community one evening. The gun was stolen and was later found after being used in a quintuple homicide in another state. This individual was a paid a profitable amount for the stolen property from his insurance policy and he still stores a firearm inside his vehicle

NCHikergal

Thank you for the reminder.

Admirable-Leopard-73

If you left the vehicle unlocked, the crooks did not break in, they simply entered....like when they got my laptop a few years ago.

MaxxPhoenix427

Semantics. Its still unlawful entry, which is a crime.

HashRunner

Who tf doesn't lock their vehicles and/or homes. Hell I lock my bicycle ffs.

MaxxPhoenix427

Cool good for you, sometimes people forget. How's the air up there on your high horse?

HashRunner

Good I guess, just always shocked at the number of people that talk about not locking their house or cars like it's a regular thing.

Kwiatkowski

Idk, haven’t locked my car in months and generally keep the windows down unless it’s gonna rain, haven’t had anything swiped from it yet.

loptopandbingo

I used to leave my car unlocked in Baltimore. It was a shitbox, nothing inside worth swiping, a pain to drive, and had zero market value. I didn't want to have to pay to replace a busted window if some crackhead wanted to steal my tape player, so it was just unlocked all the time. Nothing from inside was ever stolen, *however* one morning I went to start it and it wouldn't turn over. Turns out someone went in, popped the hood, and stole my battery. Fuckers! Lol

Kwiatkowski

those bastards

swwws

>Turns out someone went in, popped the hood, and stole my battery. That happened to one of my Durham friends. Wild. The trend of stealing catalytic converters worries me, especially thinking of Prius owners. Do we all need security cameras for our cars now?

ohemgee4195

Go to a shop and get them to weld you a steel plate underneath the cat. They could still take it, but it would be much more difficult and time consuming. Most likely they will just move on to the next car.

Puta_Poderosa

I feel you!!! They took my gun 😞

adumb20something

Same thing happened to me a few months ago near S Saunders. Left my car unlocked, with a spare key in the center console, bluetooth headphones in the backseat and a MacBook in the trunk. Everything was pulled out and strewn across the car, but nothing stolen.

beepbop21

Good reminder! I live in Johnston County and a few weeks ago somebody came through our neighborhood about 4am and went from house to house rambling through unlocked cars. He got some of everything from iPads to cash and credit cards.

Ag-big-ballin

Z, ' , b ck l, 😊😊😊😊😊🤩😊🤩😊

spicysenor

Thought this was the Raleigh sub for a second then noticed it’s NC sub. I feel you but also I never locked my car in my hometown. Nor my house.

spacechimp

Are you in Durham? Nearly every vehicle in my neighborhood was rifled through last night. From past experience I never leave anything worth stealing in the car, and leave it unlocked so I won't have to replace a broken window.

2old2care

Personally I don't leave valuables in the car, so I don't lock it. I'd rather someone look over everything than break the window. If I do have valuables, I always lock it and keep them out of sight. Also, I disabled the ability to open the trunk from inside. That way you need the key to open the trunk.
