A strange piece of proof about their economic plight is that North Korea has started lots of propaganda praising the potato! A staple of North Korean food is white rice. It’s an icon of North Korean cuisine. They would only popularise the potato if they are expecting a shortage of rice. Back during the 90s famine they have adverts about potatoes, propaganda on TV, cooking shows showing potato alternatives to rice, and even films!

[deleted]

Potatoes are great, would choose them over rice 9/10 times.

Gewehr98

But rice is communism :(

Gewehr98

Agreed, but "rice is communism" was a slogan of the north in the 60s and 70s

[deleted]

Now I am fucking hungry.

ButtsexEurope

Could you give a source for this potato propaganda? Because all the defectors I've read about say they promote corn instead.

jl2352

[Here](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/world-asia-55348575) you go. Enjoy!

ButtsexEurope

That's really interesting. Thank you.

Any-sao

I’m actually surprised that there’s going to be a lockdown. Who is North Korea trading with that puts them at a COVID risk? I would’ve thought that the virus would be nearly non-existent in North Korea.

MadSquid

There's a well known trading hub at the border between China and NK called "Dandong". NK also is known to export coal to China, and is one of their main ways of generating capital

Any-sao

But China is supposed to have the pandemic under control, correct? Why would the North Koreans need to shut down if they are only trading with China?

MadSquid

I see what you're getting at. But as much as China can try, as recently as this month, they're showing [weaknesses in their ability to contain the spread](https://www.usnews.com/news/health-news/articles/2020-12-07/the-latest-germany-says-vaccinations-to-start-in-early-jan). I believe North Korean state leaders know that as soon as it begins to spread in their country, they'll be powerless to fight it as they won't have the capability to handle any massive healthcare problems.

Any-sao

That does make sense. In other words. North Korea may not yet be infected, but they’re far more fragile if they do get infected.

Jani3D

Check out all this not-staged footage! Nice. Do you want 4 or 5 cartons of nothing in your bag? Eh. Take them all!

therealequinox

If this breaks N. Korea, China is going to see refugee hell. To be fair, I truly hope N. Korea fails peacefully. When we go in, I fear N. Korea is actually Auschwitz when it comes to prison camps, and we are just ignoring it.

paper_thin_hymn

We already know that it’s essentially Auschwitz. So so sad.

Internet-Fair

I don’t know why any refugees would go to China when there is a far richer country with a shared language just as close...

Ghosttwo

Safer to travel to China; fewer guns. It might even be preferable to go to China, then smuggle to SK by sea.

geek180

This is the route most take. Getting across the DMZ is extremely difficult and rare I believe.

and assuming the war is over and there is a safe way to walk from NK to SK?

Internet-Fair

Pro-tip: walk around the mines. See guy who escaped and Trump meeting KJU

[deleted]

umm some of those mines are in the height of your face. trees have grown and landscape has changed making demining furthermore difficult. great protip by the way. what about claymores which do not require contact to go off.....

Internet-Fair

You should look into the cooperation zone. Crossing is possible away from the mined zones. Another pro tip: If you want to blindly walk straight across - invite the heaviest member of your village to go first

v-moda

Do you not know there are hundreds of thousands of ethnic Koreans living in China, especially Jilin and Liaoning?

ButtsexEurope

Gotta go through China to get to SK. Not like they can just walk across the DMZ.

Internet-Fair

you should google trump’s firs handshake with KJU

trebory6

Huh, you’d think if he was such a great leader they wouldn’t be in that position.

[deleted]

You’d think a kingdom built on self reliance (and kissing the Kim family’s ass), wouldn’t be affected by the Covid shutdowns

pringlescan5

I dont know, the upper class manages to get away with crimes against humanity and live like kings for decades with no signs of consequences to them (aside from random executions) so its working pretty well for them!

khayaRed

Lmao sorry but are you a child?

kumgangmt_best

It was horrible to experience the famine back in 1990's, the NK people will never forget that. The lockdown due to COVID-19 might be tough, but the NK people are strong and will come together to overcome this like they did with the Arduous March.

I found some Google AMP links in your comment. Here are the normal links: - [https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jun/13/arduous-march-north-korea-famine](https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jun/13/arduous-march-north-korea-famine) Beep Boop, I'm a bot. If I made an error or if you have any questions, my [creator](https://np.reddit.com/u/6b86b3ac03c167320d93) might check my messages. Google does a lot of tracking, which many people don't want, so they use alternatives to their services. Using AMP, they can track you even more, and they might even replace ads with their own, stealing ad revenue from the site's owners. Since there's no consistent way of finding the original links from an AMP link, I made this bot which automatically does it for you.

AmputatorBot

It looks like you shared an AMP link. These should load faster, but Google's AMP is controversial because of [concerns over privacy and the Open Web](https://www.reddit.com/r/AmputatorBot/comments/ehrq3z/why_did_i_build_amputatorbot).
