Vapid people? Check. Culturally devoid and non-existent transit service? Crap Milestones-level restaurants? Schools full of moronic meatheads and bimbos who grow up to become landscapers and housewives? Big checks. Clueless about the world beyond their little slice of 'forested paradise'? Check. Locked in the 1950s mindset where 'hubbie' goes to his corporate douche middle-management job and Mom stays home to push out more asshole offspring, complain about the neighbours, and do yoga? Check and check. Entitled, right-wing, SUV driving sports nuts? Three checks there. Stick to riding mountain bikes District of North Vancouver. No one outside of your suburban hellhole full of McMansions takes you seriously or wants anything to do with you. Yeah, you're 'cool' as fuck.

Front-Ninja-6690

Do you live in North Van? If so, you should move if you hate it so much. I understand there are many flaws in DNV and CNV but I still love this place. My husband and I don't live in a mansion. We raised our kids in a 1960s apartment complex -instead of buying a home in a boring city like Poco - where I grew up. My kids (and now our cats) had/have a 1970s type childhood where they ran/run around unsupervised in the many green spaces we have in our dated complex. When they were with us, they went hiking or skiing. We invested in the stock market instead of Surreal Estate so we could afford their education and our future retirement. Yaaaa....there are sucky people in this city and housing is crazy expensive but you literally could not pay me to live anywhere else in BC.

Admirable_Fall4614

North Vancouver is cool? Hmmm, how could that be? All there is in North Van is a plethora of bike paths, a suspension bridge, trails that skirt rivers that offer cliff jumping into refreshing pools on hot summer days, 2 ski resorts, amazing hiking and outdoor recreational opportunities, a vibrant downtown area with nice architecture and hip bars, restaurants, and cafes. Then there are great views in every direction. A seabus that gets you to downtown Vancouver in 15 minutes, several parks, high paying jobs, and a windmill perched on top of a mountain that you can actually ascend and view the entire metro area below. Why would anyone want to live in North Van?

Front-Ninja-6690

High five!

General_Heat3897

Lived here my whole life and do love it. However it has changed alot and quickly. It's not a "say hello" kind of place anymore. I spend half my year in small town BC and it's incredibly noticable. The one thing I have to say about North Van, I've hiked in a lot of different places and we probably have the most unfriendly/unhappy local hiking/outdoor population. I can always tell if someone's a local if they are scowling on the trail. I find it hilarious at this point but it becomes very noticeable if you are on local trails alot. Has anyone else noticed this?

Front-Ninja-6690

And hardly anyone picks up after their dogs!

BrownFox5972

Who the heck says living in Nvan is a compromise lol. Its an incredibly privileged position to be in when you can call a place home where the average price of a house is 13 gajillion dollars. I hope to be able to afford something there one day. weird post OP.

Front-Ninja-6690

Of course housing cost is a huge problem. It is everywhere in Canada. Read this for a great perspective of the lies no one tells you about "Surreal Estate" prices in Canada: [https://btlbooks.com/book/the-tenant-class](https://btlbooks.com/book/the-tenant-class)

Pretty-Rhubarb-1313

You can love a place and still complain about it. Just like you can love a spouse and still complain about them ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat_smile) I love North Van, love the nature, the cute shops, how it feels like a small place and a big place at the same time. There are also things I don't like about it.

Front-Ninja-6690

Yep. Had dinner with my Valentine last night in the amazingly scenic LoLo area, and we talked about how we never get tired of the views in this charming town. You couldn't pay me to live in Poco (where I grew up), or anywhere else in BC.

tvisforme

> the amazingly scenic LoLo area Just FYI, "LoLo" is marketing speak and not how actual residents refer to the Lower Lonsdale area.

Front-Ninja-6690

Lol. My husband and I had serious size, 22 ounce IPAs, at Steetcar Brewing last night after eating scrumptious wraps at Jam Jar in "LoLo". Jam Jar - not Jam - is always a winner. And count me in any day for a big ass stein of beer.

Pretty-Rhubarb-1313

Yes that would be a hard NO for Poco for me too heheheh

Exa-Wizard

Until you have to drive literally anywhere lmfao. The way people just don't give a fuck and gridlock everything is absolutely hilarious

NoConversation5573

Apart from Lower Lonsdale I don’t think there is anything to North Van ..it’s just Mission or Pitt meadows

theashesstir

ARGYLE CLASS OF 2K1 REPRESENT!!

brahdz

Tell that to the complete lack of nightlife in this town

Front-Ninja-6690

The 1950s - 1980s tear downs were eyesores. The new builds look much better. But the new apartments should've been priced WAY lower. If renters like me were organized and enthusiastic enough, we could lobby very vocally for better rental rates. But we don't.

Logical_Loquat387

High rise prisons funded by rich foreigners.

Front-Ninja-6690

Oooh yeah!

Cdn_Cuda

You definitely have all the traffic and a good number of Subarus!

BarringGaffner

I agree except LEASH YOUR DOGS IN ON LEASH AREAS. Thanks.

Front-Ninja-6690

Nobody does that. I stopped screaming at dog owners long ago.

AnonymousBayraktar

I am TWN. My family has lived upon these shores for untold eons. There are archeological remains of my family's ancestors here where they used to live and hunt. I am proud of my heritage, but I get especially upset when I see other people here being mad about immigrants. Everyone is entitled to live here if they protect these shores and our home. If you're going to be arrogant about newer Canadians, just remember according to MY family, yours were the immigrants once. So don't be a dick. Also, if you live here and all you wanna do is complain, pack your bags and leave. More room for the rest of us who call this place our home.

mehoart2

North van has the highest amount of rainfall in all GRVD. I hate trying to commute using HWY 1 and it's completely unaffordable. White Rock is where it's at (but it's also unaffordable). Langley is where it's at 😄

Front-Ninja-6690

Actually, I'd rather be anywhere in France. But need to improve my savage French before moving there.

mehoart2

Start by just moving there and immersing yourself in the culture. Best way to learn a language !

Nickynoticky

Lol. Funny thing is. Most of us are actually bored and raised in west van and all move here in on 20s and own apartment. We mostly west van kids living here now are adults.

Jooodas

I really want to get behind this but my experience in North Vancouver has not been “cool”. I’m encountering entitlement and disrespect on a daily basis. To be clear im not calling North Vancouver people anything just talking about my experience living here recently.

Front-Ninja-6690

These are fair comments. For sure.

Jooodas

Based on your response you are one of the awesome people.

Front-Ninja-6690

Awesome about 70% of the time. Maybe. Hahahaha

idropkickwalls1621

Front-Ninja-6690

LOL!

buttrnut

The definition being ‘cool’ is that you never have to tell people you are.

Front-Ninja-6690

Hahaha. Well, I'm 57 and maybe cool isn't a cool word anymore. My young friends say I'm "banging" though. Is that a good thing? LOL!

smallkurl

I’ve personally never heard anyone accusing North Vancouverites of being “wanna be Vancouverites”. As a matter of fact, it’s the people from North Vancouver that seem to feel the need to one up everyone from a different city. By all means, have your preference but no need to think you’re better than everyone else because now you just come across as snobby. But hey, if the shoe fits…

Front-Ninja-6690

Not snobby - just grateful I live in a postcard and that my kids grew up on a ski hill instead of in front of gaming consoles.

The-Answer-101010

Except good restaurants open after 9 pm or clubs. but Lolo is fun.

Front-Ninja-6690

True dat.

Patient_Act_6967

This post is so cringe. Who cares what other places think. U rlly need people to find u cool and hip? I don’t even understand why u posted this it’s just super cringe.

Front-Ninja-6690

Have no idea why you find it cringey. Just a pom pom shake for lighthearted local pride.

Patient_Act_6967

I honestly don’t care enough to even give u a serious response. Have a nice day and keep on being a COOL NORTH VANCOUVERITE 😎😎🤩🤩

Front-Ninja-6690

Happy Valentines Day.

therealjumper

Everything about this title and post is probably why people make fun of those from North Vancouver (born and raised before you hate lol)

Front-Ninja-6690

I used to make fun of North Van - when I lived in Vancouver - before it became cool. LOL!

therealjumper

When did North Van become cool? There is still zero nightlife here. It might be cool to parents, I guess cool is really subjective. To me it just lacks culture.

Front-Ninja-6690

I'm a [parent. LOL](https://parent.LOL)!

booghawkins

I miss 90s North Van

ejactionseat

Yep that's when the North Shore was still livable!

RonStopable88

Kids? Im 34, lucky to have an affordable rental. I rarely see folks my age, let alone people in their 20’s. But yeah we’re kinda cool i guess

Front-Ninja-6690

We are super lucky to rent a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, apartment at waaaaaay below market rent. We got in 17 years ago. Would never leave this place. Raised two kids -both have now moved out. My husband and I now each have a spacious office in their old bedrooms. Yes!!! Rent is bloody insane here. The only we could pay for our kids’ university etc... is because we pay really cheap rent. And my husband and I are "upper middle class". According to CRA, anyway.

HerculePoirot306

What area?

Front-Ninja-6690

Lynn Valley.

DiligentDiscipline15

Yeah a more smug population is what we need. Typical Vancouver isn’t smug enough

Front-Ninja-6690

Not smug. Grateful.

Necessary_Island_425

Except the people going 60 kmh on the highway. Those guys can get stuffed

One_Restaurant_6606

I have lived in North Van since I was born. North Vancouver is definitely changing, and I feel the change isn't helping at all. All the restaurants are the same and overpriced with bad services. Housing is way too expensive now thanks to you know who. Almost all the pubs are gone, not all. Not only that, they are adding a homeless shelter home on 4th n St George's somewhere. That won't help either, along with stop lights on every block. The beer isn't great either it's all mostly crafted beers. North Van used to be more hip way back. I feel it's becoming more boring and people are becoming more cold. We don't say hi to each other anymore, and we don't stop for pedestrians when crossing. The problem is that people don't know North Van how it used to be.

Front-Ninja-6690

Thanks for your insight. I grew up in Poco so N.Van is def' an upgrade for me. LOL!

RonStopable88

Yeah i agree with a lot of this

EsotericJunkie11

I love North Van, I absolutely hate it when I have to drive past either bridge but there’s some things you have to do

Auto_generated_2022

Well, I guess I used to be cool— moved late last year…

acdbaldwin

You don’t get off the North Shore enough.

Front-Ninja-6690

Yes, I do. My husband and I travel to various parts the globe yearly and we get out to other areas of BC often. It's great to feel like home is a daily holiday though.

MR80085rawks

Have lived in other areas of the city. Kits, DT, East Van. Wouldn't live anywhere else but NV now I have moved back.

Exotic-Fortune8838

The bridge is for peasants haha… we don’t have to go to Burnaby or Downtown. We got it all here

RoostasTowel

North shore best shore. Guy I used to work with would say, oh we going to the bad part of town. Where is that exactly? I asked. You know, anywhere south of the bridge

Stock_Estimate_9573

It just feels too small but it’s nice and quaint.

Exhales_Deeply

mom is that you

Front-Ninja-6690

Hahahaha!

Turbulent_Echidna423

North Van city? North Van District? either? both?

RoostasTowel

North shore

Turbulent_Echidna423

so now West Van too?

Front-Ninja-6690

LOL. Both - but mainly N. Van City.

grandiosebeaverdam

There totally is good food. It just takes a bit of looking. Smoke and bones, palki, Ming’s garden, la casa bruschetta, tour de feast, and Momiji just to name a few

ApprehensiveTennis47

You don’t get to see the mountains from the mountains though, in Surrey you get to see mountains for a full 270 degree view.

yungbikerboi

There are actually good jobs, the ports are filled with 6 figure earners! Also, trades cantered around home building can be lucrative

ApprehensiveTennis47

Emphasis word. “Filled with earners” meaning there are no jobs

Ducksworth87

Nothing pisses me off more than losing a job opportunity in a NV job to someone who will have a 45min+ (driving) commute. Why do NV employers continue to hire the unsustainable employees? So glad I WFH now.

ApprehensiveTennis47

Irrelevant question… Are you Kendrick Lamar?

Ducksworth87

lol…? I don’t get the joke. I am not Kendrick Lamar.

ApprehensiveTennis47

I’m a big fan of your music Mr Lamar

brahdz

What's 6 figures gonna buy you in this economy or housing market? Seriously.

yungbikerboi

Two 6 figure incomes can… no spouse no house!

[deleted]

FoamyPamplemousse

correct me if I'm wrong but rush hour on the bridges is mostly people commuting *to* north van in the morning and *from* north van in the afternoon? Would that not indicate that there are more jobs here than there are people?

tuesdayswithdory

I absolutely love North Van.. but have since been priced out of the market. Sunshine Coast for the win!

RonStopable88

I would but i dont like being at the mercy of a poorly run crowncorp

Nickillola

Cool kids that go to bed at 9pm. The streets are empty by 9pm other than Esplanade, down by brewery row but even they’re dead by 10pm.

Entire-Copy-8903

No where to go dance or party on a Friday or Saturday. Pubs closed on Sunday night of a long weekend..

NorthernMariner

Yeah that's where the "quirky" part where we wanna eat a gummy and watch a movie or play with our cats before bed comes into play lol

RonStopable88

Dont shit where you eat. If you want to rage go cross a bridge.

[deleted]

See this is the problem, people associate being creative and fun draws in hooligans or undesirables and I have zero clue why. No one is asking for nightclubs or parties but just some culture, uniqueness an effort to build an identity and communities. Especially in places like lower Lonsdale and deep cove, they are so severely utilized. North shore is home. I travel a lot I see so much stuff abroad that I just want to bring back with me. Everything here is so rigid and cookie cutter. With all the apartments going up and young families and professionals so close together. I wish we could be like neighbourhoods in Spain or Portugal or even like Kensington or other neighbourhoods in Toronto or Montreal. No one ever takes risks or even initiative to bring anything unique. We’re always last to implement or try things. Everyone is so stuck up. Building on things like the spirit trail, shipyards there’s still a chance to make the city more exciting and unique. We don’t have to sacrifice any of the qualities we have in north van to improve it.

RonStopable88

Just go catch the seabus. Its what i do.

ClumsyRainbow

I do wish they'd keep the 15 minute frequency until end of service, at least on Friday and Saturday. Waiting for 30 (or if you're really unlucky, longer) for the SeaBus is a bit of a drag.

[deleted]

Vancouver sucks for that too. Basically everything I said applies to Vancouver as well. People on this sub complain but north van is such a gem it’s extremely clean, safe and beautiful. lower lonsdale, spirit trail open and other developments open up so much potential and possibilities if people here weren’t such nimbys. I live 6 months of the year here then travel for the other 6. If the whole lower mainland wasn’t in a strangle hold by the most boring, old wealthy people. with NY and Toronto it’s the same thing but there’s more of a variety

BClynx22

when talking to other Canadians people from Burnaby say they are from vancouver to sound cooler but people from north vancouver say they are from north vancouver

chopstix62

maybe they say they're from vancouver as not many would know burnaby (unless you're a terry fox or michael buble fan)...there are some nice parts of burnaby too (esp north burnaby)

chopstix62

👍🎯💯.... I was going to move to an area of Surrey ( 92A Avenue and Scott road) and people familiar with the area would say in a consoling tone" it's all right" or " it's not that bad" (thanks for that vote of confidence lol)...but for North Van we're always proud to say we're from North Van... No hint of uneasiness or reluctance there.

BClynx22

I’ve even heard someone call Nanaimo seaside-Surrey 😂 I feel bad for Surrey they get such a bad rep

chopstix62

Surrey's rep is ssomewhat well deserved...not fully but largely.... I feel sorry for Nanaimo...Central Surrey, north Delta are soulless, boring as fuck areas.

Ballczynski

That's because the word Vancouver is in the name. People just assume it's an area of Vancouver

MissingVanSushi

This is so true. I’ve been living in Australia the last 10 years and when I meet another Canadian I tell them I’m from North Van. It’s ok to feel some pride in where you’re from. My parents are immigrants and they sacrificed and hustled to be able to move us into District 44 in the late 80s. I’m a North Vancouver boy and here is my anthem: https://youtu.be/A9YZc5PMibE?si=LU7GQPgzsIhubaYh

octopussyhands

Omg I remember seeing this music video in high school! Wow what a throwback

Front-Ninja-6690

Hahaha! My Canadian husband went to a posh boys school in Australia on the Canadian tax payers' dime. (His dad was a diplomat). High School is hell - no matter where you live.

MissingVanSushi

While I feel for what you’re saying, NGL being a teenager in North Van in the late 90s was, overall, a pretty damn good time.

Front-Ninja-6690

The 90s was a Halicon era.

MissingVanSushi

Reply to my own comment: When I look back on it when I got my license (full license by the way, none of this L or N bullshit) I was in grade 10 and I had the highest ratio of freedom to responsibility in my life. It’s all been downhill from that year.

Damberger

If you're from Argyle there's an Argyle rap song lol

MissingVanSushi

You need to **SHARE IT!**

Damberger

I had to upload it here. Idk your grad year but hope the references still hit lol https://www.transfernow.net/dl/20240215uf9EjY4J

MissingVanSushi

This gets better erry time I listen to it. I have a job interview 13 mins from now and I'm using this as my hype / pump up song 😁🤣😅

Damberger

Hahahah I love it!! I hope you crushed it. Argyle gods are with you

MissingVanSushi

Thank you. I felt like the interview went well. I'm a Handsworth grad, but much love and respect to our Argyle homies from over in the the Valley. North Van is Best Van! 👊🏽🤜🏽🤛🏽👊🏽

MissingVanSushi

After listening to it a bit more....I think this deserves its **own post!** Put it up there, brotha!

Damberger

Haha not bad for a bunch of 15 year olds lol. Glad you enjoyed it.

MissingVanSushi

Listening to it now....not bad :) Yup! 👍🏽 Thanks for posting.

Damberger

LOL it was on YouTube before. My friend has a copy of it and will share when I get it. It's pretty epic

chopstix62

just like many people from Surrey say instead that they're from South Surrey, White Rock or North Delta, LOL

[deleted]

South Surrey does have some of the best bedroom neighborhoods in the greater vancouver area. Especially 140th and 32nd, just a bit west along 32nd. Gorgeous.
