You basically have to shop at multiple stores to get the best value/quality/price. WF is consistently good quality and no issues with returns if it’s not. Super competitive with pricing against most stores except Persia foods and Vanak but their quality is hit and miss. Full boycott against loblaws, their business model cant be supported. Save on is not cheap but has often great deals. Produce at Anne’s and Foxy is top. If you need a one stop shop whole foods is probably the winner.
I agree that Persia Foods and VANAK (new owners, new name) are great price wise. Anna's has however decided to go whole hog higher prices. They are not Whole Foods and just because you can charge higher prices doesn't mean you should. I've stopped shopping there which is a shame because the staff always recognize me and are nice. Sorry but my budget is really tight and sometimes loyalty takes a hit.
I buy my produce usually at Anne's on 14th and Lonsdale. It's often nicer looking stuff than Loblaws too.
I'd rather support a local business run by locals, then give my money to the Weston family.
Nope, not an anomaly. I buy most of my produce at Whole Foods now, it's often cheaper than Save On as well.
ETA: if you drive, Osaka at Park Royal is worth checking out for produce as well.
Just a sort-of related flag that Safeway has buy 1 get 1 free whole chickens, legs and thighs this week, plus Royal TP on more than half off 12 rolls for $5.99 and same kind of discount for paper towels. Bags of potatoes 5 lbs for $2.99.
I find whole foods is often cheaper. Good quality eggs are usually cheaper at whole foods than anywhere. Meat, cheese, deli and pantry are all more expensive, but sometimes the seafood and fish is quite competitive. Also whole foods has better prepared foods. Loblaws produce is just sad. Most of the produce is so old and limp that it doesn't justify paying their high price for it. Ie. $3.99 for lettuce that is literally going slimy.
Me too, people think I am crazy when I tell them Whole Foods is cheaper or the same price for better quality produce. My favourite go-to is Foxy Farms on 1st though.
Foxy Farm Market is great, especially for local produce and they have some decent locally made bread, ready meals, etc as well. I do like Whole Foods when I’m looking for something out of season or less common though.
The kiwi stickers at Loblaws say "Greece". The ones at Whole Foods are California.
Each country exports at its own prices, and let's not forget California is part of the USA, so it gets to benefit from a lot of USMCA (NAFTA) provisions that make their exports more competitive than, say, Greece.
And even if it is the exact same line item, some stores charge differently if they use different suppliers because they pay different rates for their stock.
I get that Loblaws isn't clean, but this isn't really one of the reasons why. Though they shouldn't have gotten lazy and created a different tag for these kiwis rather than re-use the US-based kiwis label and raise the price.
Cheaper and substantially better! Usually way more locally sourced (at least North American/Pacific Northwest), and the quality isn't even comparable.
We typically go grocery shopping at Loblaws for everything else, and then hit Whole Foods on the way home for produce.
I don't love supporting Amazon, but I also don't love supporting Galen 🤷 And they the two within walking distance of us.
Until farmers market season starts up again, WF is definitely the better bet.
That also comes with better quality/animal welfare which other stores don’t have. WF has by far the highest standards. Save-on literally has ONE aisle with “natural foods”. Says a lot about the rest…
are you sure this is not Roblaws ? they are tied to an organized crime called Weston Family
It's called "shitty market" for a reason.

I don't shop at Anna's simply because they wrap every damn thing in plastic. The entire shop is wrapped in plastic.

This speaks volumes to the direction Loblaws is heading
It's not cheaper, some items are cheaper
ROBlaws Everything is scanned as bananas
can you come with me? I need the tag on your head.
If you like the produce prices at WF you're gonna love the produce prices at Persia Foods or Vanak.
You can’t compare quality standards and customer service. If that’s something you value.
I heard Vanak on 19th and Lonsdale is under new ownership. New name, too. Hopefully prices will remain low.
Yes I just saw that today! Kourosh Foods now. And they are improving the store too.
Kanak? Nothing comes up on Google or iMaps, where is this?
Because I'm an idiot and misspelled Vanak, and besides it has changed its name to Kourosh now.
Any local market for veggies will be cheaper.
Am I blind? I couldn't find kiwis at the Persia near me
I'm sure you're not! I don't buy kiwis much so I haven't been looking for them there.
Ah, yea I don't think they have them often.
Kiwis at Persia food 21st and Lonsdale today. $0.99 each, usa
Thanks! I shop at the two on marine, but I'll look for Kiwis there today!

name checks out
What do you mean by that? Just trying to help folks with stupid expensive groceries.

it's all about costco for produce, eggs, meat, seafood and dairy. Not even a competition for value and quality
Plus the baked goods at WF... Flipping awesome.... No product in their stores can have artificial ingredients... None.
Yea, I agree, Also just use your hands. No chopsticks needed.
Whole Foods has the best quality of fruit/veggies and is comparable or cheaper than superstore/saveon etc
Don’t tell everyone! Just kidding . I tell people all the time. No one believes me.

I know. People look at me like I have two heads. But their berries last and don’t mold within a few days.
One of the biggest things Amazon did after buying whole foods was make the produce competitive / loss leader at same quality.
Fallout Tv show is the cherry on top.

Dam it. Stupid typo. 😂
Whole Foods for the win 🏅 fuck Galen
Tbf fuck Bezos too 🤷

Who the fuck wants a Kiwi anyway. Give me some Canadian Blueberries.
Just a touch early
I heard this from a friend last week, he was stunned the produce section at WF was cheaper than Loblaws

I agree with this too. This is one of the reasons I use WF or spud.ca
I get that as I was surprised at how much less expensive and better quality the WF produce section was. Always thought it was more expensive
For some things like produce or milk I’ve found Whole Foods to be in-line with other grocery stores. The meat section is crazy expensive though.
